Greville Poke [Greville John Poke] (1912-2000), editor of 'Everybody's' magazine, arts administrator with the English Stage Comp
Greville Poke arts administrator with the English Stage Company at the Royal Court Theatre. Two Typed Letters one Signed as editor of ‘Everybody’s’ magazine to W. Macqueen-Pope one discussing an article on music hall with carbons of 3 replies
Poke’s two letters: 12 March and 27 May 1951; both on letterhead of ‘Everybody’s’ magazine 114 Fleet Street London. Carbons of the three letters to Poke from Maqueen-Pope: 27 March and 16 and 23 May 1951. From the Macqueen-Pope papers. See the two men’s entries in the Oxford DNB. Poke’s two letters are in good condition lightly aged the second with slight rust spotting from paperclip; the carbons of MP’s letters to Poke on aged worn and discoloured cartridge paper. ONE: Poke to MP 12 March 1951. 3pp small 4to. Begins: ‘My dear Popie / I was rather out of depth on this article - “It was top of the Bill†- so I sent it over to my Father Fleet Street magazine owner Frederick Robert Poke who has been devoted to Music Halls from very early days; and the following are some notes which he sent me which I think I would like to pass on to you fr in the light of what he says you can probably do some revisions on your article.’ A transcription of F. R. Poke’s notes follows. He finds MP’s proposed article ‘rather heavy going. It would be a big wad of stuff to publish but I feel that you should accept it.’ He proceeds with specific points with reference to the Brothers Horne ‘it was a very amusing boxing match’ R. G. Knowles Kate Carney Fred Russell and especially Charlie Whittle ‘When he took London by storm I remember his topping the bill over Marie Lloyd and doing four halls a night.’. Also: ‘I was one of the few people who ever saw Dan Leno dance - he had to give up dancing because of his health.’ The elder Poke continues by stating that he wantd to be a comedian himself. ‘Fred Burnell of the Gee family taught me ho to manipulate a drum-major’s wand. I will show you one day how to do it. And I also learned from some of these people trick-cycling. I could and can I think stand still on a bicycle and ride it backwards - both ways - and do a few other tricks on it.’ He concludes with practical suggests about cutting the article. TWO: Poke to MP 22 May 1951. 1p 4to. Proposing to discuss his ‘suggestions about HAMPTON COURT and the others’. Signed in his absence. ‘I am dictating this from home for unfortunately I’ve got what the Doctor tells me is a form of dysentery - most uncomfortable.’ THREE to FIVE: Unsigned carbons of letters to Poke from MP each 1p 4to. In the first he describes revisions he has made to the music hall article in the second he proposes an article on ‘The Pageantry of Hampton Court’ and others on ‘Earls Court The White City and such exhibits of theh past’ in the third he condoles with Poke over his indisposition ‘I am not too well myself and very harrassed.’. Poke’s two letters: 12 March and 27 May 1951; both on letterhead of ‘Everybody’s’ magazine, 114 Fleet Street, London. Ca unknown

GREY, Edward, 1st Viscount Grey of Fallodon (1862-1933, English Liberal politician)
An autograph letter signed 'E. Grey' to 'My dear Holland' Henry Thurstan Holland later 1st Viscount Knutsford
Very Good. Small octavo 3 pages a bifolium last page blank; 'Fallodon Chathill Northumberland' letterhead 2 January 1904. Folded once for posting; in excellent condition. 'My dear Holland I should like very much to help in your Candidature but I have foresworn all further promises & engagements till I have got rid of those which I now have & which will take all of my spare time till Easter. And it is only some six weeks since I spoke under the walls has it any walls of Birmingham viz at West Bromwich. I don't think the first will dissolve in the summer: Joseph Chamberlain wants a dissolution when the pinch of bad trade is being most felt. We might have a dissolution in February but more likely in the autumn of 1904 or in February 1905'. Grey 'was a Liberal MP 1885-1916 and Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs in Gladstone's last administration 1892-95 when the Grey declaration warned the French off the Sudan. He was Foreign Secretary 1905-16 in the Liberal administration of Campbell-Bannerman and Asquith' 'Dictionary of World Biography'.
Provenance: Collection of The Hon Barry Jones AC. unknown

Grey, Henry, 3rd Earl Grey (1802-1894). English Statesman who served as Secretary of War from 1835 to 1839.
A 4-PAGE AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED by HENRY GREY REGARDING THE 1871 NEWCASTLE LABOR STRIKE FOR NINE HOUR DAYS.
Northumberland August 5 1871. 1871. Good. - Octavo 7-1/8 inches high by 4-3/8 inches wide. Over 300 words penned on all four sides of a folded sheet of creamy white paper with the address embossed in blind at the top of the cover sheet. Replying to a request for his assistance in working out a solution to the strike by engineers in Newcastle seeking that limits be placed on the hours they are required to work each day: "I also yesterday received a letter on the same subject from Mr Lowthian Bell - In answer to his letter I told Mr. Bell that I would be very glad to do anything in my power to assist in bringing the unfortunate strike at Newcastle to a close but that I fear that nothing that I would do would be likely to promote that object & might even tend rather to increase than to diminish the existing irritation between the employers & the employed." Earl Grey asks if the recipient might have some "arrangement to propose for the settlement." which might help him decide if he should get involved in the negotiations. He mentions in closing that he will be traveling over the next several days culminating with his being "compelled to go to London to vote against the ballot bill". Signed "Grey". Folded twice horizontally the letter was once mounted or tipped-in to a book with remnants of paper adhering to the top edge of the last page not affecting the text. There is also a tiny piece of dark paper near the lower center of the last page which does not touch on the text.
The "Nine Hours Strike" began in August of 1871 when engineers in Newcastle upon Tyne and adjoining areas requested that working hours be limited to nine hours a day. The bitter strike was prolonged when employers refused to talk and brought in foreign workers in an attempt to break the strike. Though there were a few incidents of violence many of the foreign workers soon realized that they were being used to support a system of industrial slavery and would lose their jobs anyway once the strike was resolved. The strike went on for 14 weeks before employers finally compromised and granted the strikers' request.
The Ballot Bill to which Earl Grey refers proposed that parliamentary and local elections in the UK take place by secret ballot. The Bill was passed in 1872.
Also known as Viscount Howick the English statesman Henry George Grey 3rd Earl Grey 1802-1894 entered parliament in 1826. His father became Prime Minister when the Whigs came to power in 1830 and Earl Grey then Viscount Howick was made Under-Secretary of State for War and the Colonies. Aligned with colonial reformers he resigned in 1834 when the emancipation of slaves was made to take place gradually instead of immediately. He became Secretary of War when he entered Lord Melbourne's cabinet in 1835 and made significant administrative reforms. He again resigned in dissatisfaction in 1839 and gained a reputation for crotchetiness. He supported free trade and as colonial secretary a post to which he was appointed in 1846 was the first minister to proclaim that the colonies should be governed for their own benefit and not for that of Great Britain & Ireland. As much as possible he accorded them self-governance. He was however soon embroiled in the turmoil and discontent brewing in Ceylon the West Indies and New Zealand. He authored several works on political subjects and policy including an 1888 work on the state of Ireland and one on the United States tariff. Northumberland, August 5, 1871. unknown
