Robert George Cecil Fane (1796-1864), English Judge, as Commissioner of the Court of Bankruptcy [Court of Chancery]:
Autograph Letter Signed 'C Fane' to G. Joy discussing the reform of the Court of Chancery.
19 August 1844; Court of Bankruptcy. 12mo 3 pp. Thirty-three lines. Text clear and complete. Fair on lightly-aged paper with traces of mount on reverse of second leaf which is docketed 'C. Fane to G. Joy 19 Augt. 1844'. A significant and interesting letter on a topic later tackled by Dickens in 'Bleak House' by a judge who was an active member of the Law Amendment Society and whose decisions according to his entry in the Oxford DNB 'were frequently the subject of comment' although 'very few of his judgments were reversed on appeal'. Fane sympathises with Joy's 'misfortunes' as he does 'with the case of every man who has the misfortune to be involved in a Chancery suit'. There is however nothing that he could proposer 'relating to Insolvency or Bankruptcy' that could 'redress the wrongs to wh. the delays of Chancery have subjected you'. The main cause of these delays is the 'tossing of the suitor from the Judge to the Master & from the Master to the Judge till the subjt. in dispute is wasted in expense'. The only remedy is for the judge to be compelled 'to carry out his own desires without references to Masters' or to 'so raise the station power & responsibilities of Masters as that they shall become independent judges'. Small contemporary cutting laid down at head of first page reading 'SUBDIVISION COURT WEST SIDE. Commissioners. Sir Charles Frederick Williams kt. Josh. Evans esq. hon. Robert G. Cecil Fane.' 19 August 1844; Court of Bankruptcy. unknown

ROBERT LOUIS STEVENSON, (1850-1894).
[FIRST TURKISH EDITION OF "NEW ARABIAN NIGHTS"] Intihar Kulübü ve Sraçenin elmasi. Translated by Salime Servet Seyfi, (1868-1944). [i.e. The Suicide Club and the Rajah's diamond].
Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Contemporary 1/4 black leather bdg. raised four bands to spine. Occasionally minor stains and foxing on pages extremities, restored spine, and re-backed boards. Otherwise a good copy. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). In Ottoman script (Turkish with Arabic letters). 246 p. Exceedingly rare first edition of this first translation of Stevenson in any Turkish / Turkic language, of 'New Arabian Nights' including the short stories Stevenson's 'The Suicide Club' and 'The Rajah's Diamond'. Translated by Salime Servet Seyfi (1868-1944), who was a female author and translator who wrote books during the period of the Constitutional Monarchy (after 1908) and National Struggle for Independence (1919-1922). Having published two books, poetry and a novel, her place among the women author is notable. She among the rare women authors to contribute to war literature. She mainly wrote didactic prose and poems. Her works attract attention for they inspire readers about national conscience. Salime Servet, who wrote mainly during the years of the Balkan Wars (1911-1912), played an active role in Müdafaa-i Milliye Cemiyeti [i.e. National Resistance Community]. Furthermore, she contributed to the literature with her journal of Seyyale [i.e. Fluid]. She translated Stevenson's short stories shortly after the Balkan Wars (1911-1912). She used a gorgeous but simple language in Ottoman Turkish including Persian and Arabic words carefully selected by her in her translation. "New Arabian Nights" by Robert Louis Stevenson, first published in 1882, is a collection of short stories previously published in magazines between 1877 and 1880. The Suicide Club is a collection of three 19th century detective fiction short stories by Robert Louis Stevenson that combine to form a single narrative. First published in the London Magazine in 1878, they were collected and republished in the first volume of the New Arabian Nights. The Rajah's Diamond is a cycle of four short stories by Robert Louis Stevenson. First published in 1878 in a serial periodical London Magazine, they were republished in the first volume of New Arabian Nights. The stories are: "Story of the Bandbox", "Story of the Young Man in Holy Orders", "Story of the House with the Green Blinds", "The Adventure of Prince Florizel and a Detective". First Edition. Özege 9271.; OCLC 780204146.

ROBERT SPENCE, ENGLISH QUAKER
1808 HANDWRITTEN AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED TO ROBERT FOSTER FUTURE FATHER IN LAW
North Shields England 1808. Extremely rare handwritten letter of great interest to collectors or researchers of ENGLISH QUAKER LIFE. ROBERT SPENCE Quaker banker ALS North Shields dated 1808. Three pages 4to. plus integral address leaf. To his future wife's father Robert Foster Hebblethwaite Hall near Ledberge Kendal. This letter is the nexus of a correspondence that will last nearly five decades between these two English Quakers - bound by blood religion and soon matrimony - Spence begs to be allowed to visit Hebblethwaite now that Foster has learned of his attachment to Mary. Very sensitively written and in many ways a proposal of marriage but much more than the simple face value of the words may be read between the lines as Spence appears very defensive for not having spoken to Foster first. Simply sensational English Quaker historical autographed letter. VG. Autograph. Manuscript. Very Good. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Paperback

Roberts, W. H. (William Hayward).
A POETICAL ESSAY, ON THE ATTRIBUTES OF GOD. Part II. Second Edition.
28 p. + Numerous blanks in binding. Margins slightly browned. 4to. 255 mm. Old leather backed marbled boards binding, worn and broken at joints. XLib. ** Autograph of "M. Tyson C.C.C." This is undoubtedly the ownership Michael Tyson (1740-1780), English antiquary and artist (the C.C.C. after his name refers to his attendance and ranking at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge). His library, which was sold by Leigh & Sotheby in 1781, was rich in rare works. He is probably most famous for his many engravings, etchings, and miniatures (mostly made for private circulation). The author of this interesting poetic essay was William Hayward Roberts (1734-91), Scholar and Fellow of Eton and King's. He was appointed Provost of Eton in 1781. Issued separately from Part I, which was entitled 'Poetical Essay, on the Existence of God.' W144
