John Bell (1764-1836) of Lincoln's Inn, English barrister:
John Bell of Lincoln's Inn. Part of document giving his legal opinion in a cause written out by a clerk and signed and dated by him.
Lincoln's Inn. 14 March 1828. Bell's entry in the Oxford DNB records that 'In conversation with the prince regent later George IV Lord Chancellor Eldon was said to have described Bell as the best lawyer then at the equity bar though he could "neither read write walk nor talk": Bell was lame spoke with a broad Westmorland accent the effect of which was heightened by a confirmed stammer and wrote in a hand never more than barely legible. He was accustomed to say that he wrote in three hands - one which he himself could read one which his clerk could read and one which neither he nor his clerk could read.' The present document consists of the lower part of a 4to leaf torn away to make a piece of 16 x 20 cm paper with the legal opinion in a far neater hand than Bell's on both sides. In fair condition on aged and worn paper. The first page of the legal opinion in which no particulars are revealed is pretty much a fair copy while the second page is more untidy with several corrections and interpolations. The first page begins: '<.> then living he will be absolutely entitled to the £3000 and the accumulations and the question will not arise. But if the 21 years expires before he is forty or if he is living when it expires it is uncertain who shall ultimately be entitled to the money and the directions in the will that the produce shall go to those would have been entitled .'. The last page concludes by citing other cases. The last sentence reads: 'But as the Trustees made no benefit of it themselves by Keeping it in their own hands perhaps the Court might charge them 4 Per Cent only and compound Interest.' Bell signs and dates the document at the end of the verso: 'John Bell Lins. Inn March 14. 1828'. Lincoln's Inn. 14 March 1828. unknown

Portraits : John Berger on Artists
Hardcover, 512 pages, ENG, 240 x 160 x 50 mm, as new, in perfect condition ! illustrations in b/w. ISBN 9781784781767. One of the world's most celebrated art writers, John Berger takes us through centuries of art in this distinctive history that will enlighten and inspire. In Portraits, Berger connects art and history in revolutionary ways, from the prehistoric paintings of the Chauvet caves to Cy Twombly's radical work. In his penetrating and singular prose, Berger presents entirely new ways of thinking about art history, and artists both canonized and obscure, from Rembrandt, to Henry Moore, Jackson Pollock to Picasso. Throughout, Berger maintains the essential connection between politics, art and the wider study of culture. A beautifully illustrated walk through many centuries of visual culture from one of the contemporary world's most incisive critical voices.

John Edwin Cussans (1837-1899), English antiquary and historian of Hertfordshire [ Edward Walford (1823-1907), magazine editor ]
John Edwin Cussans antiquary. Autograph Letter Signed 'J. E. Cussans' to Edward Walford regarding his 'new Magazine' the Antiquarian Magazine and Bibliographer and the sending of a New Year's card.
On embossed letterhead of 4 Wyndham Crescent Junction Road London . 28 December 1881. See both men's entries in the Oxford DNB. 2pp. 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition lightly aged and worn. The present letter was written as Walford – having resigned the editorship of the Antiquary in acrimonious circumstances – was preparing to launch the Antiquarian Magazine and Bibliographer renamed Walford's Antiquarian Magazine and Bibliographical Review in 1885. It would cease publication in 1886. In the letter after thanking Walford for his 'very kindly review' Cussans writes: 'If the first number of your new Magazine be a fair specimen of those to follow its success is certain. Every one of the contributors whose names you announce is a good man and in future I shall look forward to the first of the ensuing month with anticipation of pleasure.' As it is 'too late to send you a Xmas card' he is enclosing one for the new year: 'It is somewhat antiquated but that is no dismerit. It may perhaps find a place among the other “Crosby Papers†I sent you. This playbill is the one I looked for in my desk in the City but could not find.' On embossed letterhead of 4 Wyndham Crescent, Junction Road [ London ]. 28 December 1881. unknown
