‎On letterhead of the Privy Council Office. 19 September 1872. 6pp. 12mo. In very good condition adhering to leaves removed from an album. Helps begins: 'My dear Martin This is one of the things you excel in - the giving in a comparatively short memoir the real aim and end of a life: so that after reading your "In memoriam" one does not care to hear any more details.' Helps 'really cannot find any fault' in Martin's piece. 'Her. Majesty i.e. Queen Victoria must I think be exceedingly pleased with the book - I mean your work. Then the whole subject of the relation of Stockmar to the occupants of the English throne is most judiciously handled; and there is great skill shown in what is omitted to be said.' He gives 'One single criticism' before complaining that he is 'troubled with cattle plague affairs' and so cannot write at more length. Martin best-known work his biography of Prince Albert 1874-1880 would be similarly praised for its tact and skill see his entry in the Oxford DNB. Helps had edited a volume of the Prince's speeches in 1862. On letterhead of the Privy Council Office. 19 September 1872. unknown‎

‎‘Too serious an affair for the taste of the ordinary playgoer’: Sir Arthur Wing Pinero English playwright. Autograph Letter Signed to ‘Mrs. Hughes’ regarding matters including his play ‘The Thunderbolt’.‎

‎12 May 1908. On letterhead of 14 Hanover Square W. London. See his entry in the Oxford DNB. 2pp 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition lightly aged. Folded once. The valediction reads ‘Yours alway faithfully / Arthur W. Pinero’ and it is written with quite a flourish: the ‘y’ of ‘faithfully’ hooks downwards in a long squiggle exrending downwards past the right of the termination of Pinero’s signature which rises upwards being dotted above and below the signature’s underlining. He feels that her ‘kind letter is all the more welcome inasmuch as it gives signs’ that she is recovering from her recent illness. ‘We have indeed been greatly concerned at the bad news we have heard of you. I hope that the present fine weather will set you up completely.’ He thanks her for what she says about his play ‘The Thunderbolt’: ‘I fear it is rather too serious an affair for the taste of the ordinary playgoer; but we shall see.’ He ends with ‘repeated acknowledgments’. 12 May 1908. ‎Sir Charles A Elton [Sir Charles Abraham Elton; Sir C A Elton] (1778-1853), English army officer, author and translator [John Ta‎

‎Autograph Letter Signed 'Charles A. Elton' from Sir Charles Abraham Elton to John Taylor editor of the 'London Magazine' submitting a contribution on 'Homer's Battle of the Frogs and Mice' and discussing his own and other contributions.‎

‎'Clifton Bristol. August 16th.' 1821. 2pp. 4to. Bifolium. Good on lightly-aged paper. Addressed by Elton on reverse of second leaf to 'John Taylor Esq.' Taylor had assumed the editorship of the London Magazine on the death by duel of John Scott in February 1821. Elton begins by informing Taylor that he has 'not been able yet to manage the Batrachomyomachia to my mind'. Elton's translation of 'The Battle of the Frogs and Mice' would appear anonymously in the issue of October 1821 as the second of a series named 'Leisure Hours'. He has instead 'sent some chit-chat to serve as an introduction'. 'On Homer's Battle of the Frogs and Mice' appeared in September 1821 as the first of the series. He intends this as 'the first of occasional desultory papers of criticism poetry or the like: a specimen or two of the Battle of Frogs may form the second of the series'. Changing the subject he now declines two books Taylor has sent him to review: he feels that too much has already been said about Madame de Stael and he has 'already administered the ferula to her somewhat roughly'. He is 'equally diffident about Bonaparte's literary character' and asks whether 'Mr Hazlitt or Leigh Hunt' are not 'the fittest men to undertake it'. He feels that to 'enter fully' into Taylor's 'plan relative to the Monthly Literature seems to require the interchange of sentiments in conversation' and that this is 'one of the disadvantages of a periodical contributor residing in the country'. He suspects that 'a London domicile' is 'necessary for the convenient and ready arrangement and execution of this sort of monthly summary'. He has been 'thinking of some regular supply of poetry translated or original independent of the incidental passages in the Leisure Hours' but has not yet 'ascertained either my plan or my powers'. In the first part of a postscript he asks 'What is Knickerbocker Washington Irving & is he worth reviewing' This appears to be a reference to a footnote to the 'Epistle to Elia' by 'OLEN' published in the August 1821 issue of the London Magazine; the footnote also discusses two readings of that poem thanks Taylor 'for the Magazine' and ends 'It is a pity the writer who so ably reviewed Crabbe does not continue his "Series of Living Poets." 'Clifton [Bristol]. [August?] 16th.' [1821]. unknown‎

‎Sir Charles Oman [Sir Charles William Chadwick Oman] (1860-1946), English military historian and Librarian of All Souls College,‎

‎Sir Charles Oman military historian. Three Autograph Letters Signed all ‘C. W. C. Oman’ as Librarian of All Souls College to ‘Mr Harlow’ of Rhodes House Library regarding his proposal about ‘the long series of Cape Parliamentary proceedings’.‎

‎2 7 and 21 June 1937. All three on the letterhead of the Library of All Souls College Oxford. See Oman’s entry in the Oxford DNB. Each letter 1p 12mo. Each folded once. All three in good condition lightly aged. The correspondence concerns Harlow’s proposal according to the letter of 2 June 1937 ‘that All Souls College should present to the Rhodes House Library the comparatively few yearly numbers of the Cape Parliamentary proceedings 1875-1910 which are not already in either the Bodleian or the Rhodes House shelves - keeping for the College the residuence a broken set of about 200 volumes’. In the first letter Oman states that he will place the suggestion before the library committee adding ‘I must confess that it seems to me rather a crime from the point of view of a library to break a complete set. We shall perhaps be able to find some institution in London which would like the entire file’. He nevertheless sympathizes with Harlow’s ‘plea that a duplicate or almost duplicate set in your shelves would be a burden’. In the second letter he writes that he does ‘see the point’ of Harlow’s proposal: ‘avoidance of duplication’. In the last of the three letters which Oman signs ‘C. W. C. Oman / Librarian A. S. C.’ he informs Harlow that the library committee have voted ‘that it was prepared to present to the Rhodes House Library the volumes 1875-79 of the Cape Parliamentary reports and the odd numbers of Appendix 1 2. 3 and n7 of 1883 and 1 of Appendix II of the same year. The Committee intends to keep and dispense of the other volumes of the long set’. Harlow is invited to send for the Rhodes House volumes. 2, 7 and 21 June 1937. All three on the letterhead of the Library of All Souls College, Oxford. unknown‎
