Joseph Ashby-Sterry (c1835-1917), English novelist, poet and artist, contributor to 'The Graphic' under the name 'Bystander': c.
Autograph Letter Signed 'J. Ashby-Sterry' to 'my dear Worth'.
18 July 1872; 3 Plowden Buildings Temple. 16mo 1 p. Bifolium. Eight lines. Text clear and complete. On stained aged paper. An uncommon autograph written in a distinctive stylised hand in purple ink. Reluctantly announcing his inability to go on 'the Barge trip' which he had looked upon 'as the pleasantest excursion of the year & alas & alas not that a lass has any thing to do with my engagement I shall be unable to be with you'. According to his obituary in The Times Ashby-Sterry 'knew the Thames as intimately as he knew London and his favourite recreations were rowing and sailing and detailed explorations of old and new London'. 18 July 1872; 3 Plowden Buildings, Temple. unknown

Joseph Ashby-Sterry (1836-1917), English novelist, poet, journalist and painter ['Mary H. Tennyson', ie. Mary H. Folkard]: i. e.
Joseph Ashby-Sterry Autograph Letter Signed 'J. Ashby-Sterry' to 'Mary H. Tennyson' pseudonym of Mary H. Folkard 6 Saint George's Square Regent's Park N.W.
17 June 1904; on letterhead 8 Saint Martin's Place Trafalgar Square W.C. London. Two pages 16mo. Very good. Twenty-two lines attractively written in purple ink beneath a letterhead printed in bright red. With postmarked envelope addressed in autograph and carrying a penny stamp. He thanks her for sending him a copy of her book 'The Luck of John Seaton'. 'It reached me down in the country where strange to say I was already half way through it. I bought it at the railway station & had not arrived at the name of the author when I received your letter. They ought to always put the name on the cover.' He enjoyed the story 'from beginning to end'. 'It is full of power & strikingly original.' Discusses the 'character-drawing'. 'If I can do anything for it - or urge others to do so - I shall be indeed happy'. Sends regards to Miss Folkard. Has been 'fortunate enough to acquire a small version of "Five o'clock in the Morning' which he imagines 'might be the sketch for the large picture'. In the light of this letter the British Library Catalogue's dating of 'John Seaton' to 1905 should be ammended to the previous year. 17 June 1904; on letterhead 8 Saint Martin's Place, Trafalgar Square, W.C. [London]. unknown

Saint Martin's Chambers Trafalgar Square London; 26 June 1894. One page 12 x 9 cms. Rust stain from paperclip and strip of offset discolouration. In purple ink. A recent letter to Harmsworth was sent to the wrong address. He has 'another letter of Yates's Edmund Yates 1831-1894 journalist and writer better than the one of which you had a copy'. Wonders whether Harmsworth wishes 'to make use of it'. Would also like to know whether 'shares in "Answers" Harmsworth's magazine 'Answers to Correspondents'' can 'be got through a broker in the ordinary way'. Saint Martin's Chambers, Trafalgar Square [London]; 26 June 1894. unknown

Joseph Ashby-Sterry (c1836-1917), English painter and author [Punch, or the London Charivari]: c. 18
Joseph Ashby-Sterry Two Autograph Letters Signed and two Autograph Notes Signed all four 'J. Ashby-Sterry' to Edward Draper.
1871 1872 1873 and 1880; the first three from 3 Plowden Buildings Temple and the last from 4 Marine Parade Dover. ITEM ONE note one page 12mo 3 December 1871 remains of grey paper mount adhering to verso of blank second leaf of bifolium: Apologises for sending a undated note: 'I daresay you can manage to fix at about what period it was written'. ITEM TWO note one page 8vo 12 December 1872 on creased aged paper: Declining a dinner invitation. ITEM THREE letter one page 8vo 21 November 1873 on aged paper heavily chipped at head and foot: He has just described Draper's paper to Blanchard who 'thinks it just the very thing they want. They like to have dates. If you have the original bill I would think that might go in.' Blanchard wants Draper to send it 'to Edward Leigh Era Office as soon as you can'. 'He is not quite sure whether they are full or not. But I think it would be worth trying. It is much too good a <> to be thrown away.' ITEM FOUR letter one page 8vo 13 October 1880 good in purple ink on lightly aged paper docketed second leaf of bifolium a little grubby and with traces of previous mount adhering: It is good of Draper to say he will send the 'Mathematical Song': 'It is one of the very best comic songs I know of.' He 'will take good care no one has a copy'. Draper's letter 'with regard to bookbinding brought many replies'. 'The "monsters" came in shoals & I shall probably have some difficulty in making a selection.' He was amused to hear about Ledbury 'and will get the paper'. Says he has 'been doing the "Lays of a Lazy Minstrel" in Punch lately. "Le Sportsman" in the current number is mine.' On his return hopes to have 'a smoke & a chat' with Draper at his 'place'. Assumes that Draper knows about the states of Hogarth's plates. Addresses of three recommended London bookbinders in Ashby-Sterry's hand on second leaf together with directions to Carter Draper's Hampshire home in Drapers hand. 1871, 1872, 1873 and 1880; the first three from 3 Plowden Buildings, Temple, and the last from 4 Marine Parade, Dover. unknown

Joseph Simpson (1879-1939), English artist, engraver and cartoonist [George Bernard Shaw; Maxim Gorky; Gabriele D'Annunzio; Thom
Joseph Simpson English artist and cartoonist. Signed proofs of six prints caricaturing George Bernard Shaw; Maxim Gorky; Hall Caine; Thomas Hardy; Algernon Charles Swinburne and J. Pierpont Morgan' 'London Opinion' and 'Lions'.
First published in the weekly magazine 'London Opinion'. Reprinted in the book 'Lions' published in New York and San Francisco by Morgan Shepard Co. 1906. Simpson was a native of Carlisle in Cumbria and came to London in the early years of the twentieth century where he was encouraged by Frank Brangwyn to take up etching. In 1918 he was made official artist with the new Royal Air Force. The National Portrait Gallery has eight of Simpson's works but none of the present six which are all in the style of the artist's portrait 'ink irregular' of the Earl of Halsbury present in the Gallery's collection. Each of the six caricatures is printed in black within a 17 x 12 cm border. Each has Simpson's original pencil signature three in grey and three in orange outside the border in the bottom right-hand corner. All six are printed on thin paper ranging in size from 18 x 13cm to 19.5 x 13cm and each is backed on a piece of card from 19 x 13.5cm to 21 x 16cm. All six in good condition on aged paper with minimal spotting with the card mounts showing evidence of previous framing. These six caricatures are uncommon: they are not among the eight Simpson items held by the National Portrait Gallery. Originally produced for the 'London Opinion' weekly magazine they were among the fourteen which featured in the 1906 book 'Lions' New York and San Francisco: Morgan Shepard Co. The book itself is scarce: it was only published in America and there are no copies in English libraries listed on COPAC or among the twelve on OCLC WorldCat. In the introduction to 'Lions' C. Haldane Macfall 1860-1928 ranks Simpson with Max Beerbohm F. Carruthers Gould and E. T. Reed as one of the leading English caricaturists adding that there is 'no living caricaturist who can approach Joseph Simpson in decorative sense in massing and arrangement or for beauty of artistry'. Macfall regards Simpson's portrait of Gorky as 'the finest portrait of the Russian upon which I have so far set eyes' and commends 'the aggressiveness of SHAW . the solemn earnestness of HALL CAINE . the poetic absorption of his SWINBURNE'.
