‎Autograph Letter Signed 'T. Mitchell' from the classical scholar Thomas Mitchell to an unnamed editor 'My dear friend' discussing his work translating Demosthenes.‎

‎Ramsdon sic. 24 January 1822. 2pp. 12mo. In a windowpane mount on a leaf removed from an album. The letter itself very good on aged paper; the mount worn at extremities. He begins by informing the recipient that his 'last Letter has made ample atonement for the provocation of the preceding' and he has 'ever been the foremost both in word & deed to keep my wings in motion. I speak this seriously: my former note was only a temporary petulance'. The second paragraph begins: 'I must positively have another Paper for my Orators'. He has 'run to a fearful length & yet have cramped myself all the way. Besides what I enclose I shall have ready as much to forward in the shape of reflexion inferences &c before I enclose with my legal oratory. And then I have the Political Oratory on my hands'. He continues: 'I engage to bring Demosthenes upon the stage in a new manner & when I have him there I should like to shew him to as much advantage as I can'. The letter continues in the same vein with a postscript beginning: 'Let me hear as soon as you can that my time of gestation is extended.' Ramsdon [sic]. 24 January 1822. unknown‎

‎Summary The corpus of sermons and saints' lives from early medieval England, in English and Latin, is the largest and most varied of its kind from a contemporary European perspective. In recent years this extraordinary body of literature has attracted increasing attention, as witnessed by an efflorescence of new editions, translations, commentaries, essay collections, dissertations, and amply funded research projects such as the Electronic Corpus of Anonymous Old English Homilies (ECHOE) project based at the University of G ttingen. The present collection of thirteen essays grew out of a 2022 conference sponsored by the ECHOE project on Old English anonymous homilies and saints' lives and their sources and reflects the best of current scholarship on early medieval homiletic and hagiographic literature from England. This literature is central to an understanding of the spiritual imagination and social practices of non- lite audiences. Together, they introduce new discoveries, identify new sources, edit new texts, make new claims about authors, revisers, and textual relationships, revise previous arguments about aspects of literary history, and provide new interpretations of Old English and Latin sermons and saints' lives. These studies show vividly how European learning influenced the liturgical practices and peripheral education of early medieval England. ‎Thomas Seccombe biographer. Two Autograph Letters Signed to the publisher John Lane concerning the Titmarsh Club and Lane's publication of books by Stephen Sydney Reynolds.‎

‎One from 18 Perryn Road Acton W London. 2 April 1908. The other with the same address on letterhead of the East London College University of London Mile End Road E. 21 October no year. Both items in fair condition on lightly-aged paper. ONE: 3pp. 12mo. Bifolium. The letter begins: 'Dear Mr Lane Conscientious research in Titmarshian activities seems to point to the fact that you owe to the club the sum of 22/- for two dinners in October 1907.' He continues on this theme for a while before turning to Reynolds: 'I am very glad to hear that you are going to bring out the Holy Mountain & Poor Mans House by Reynolds. As partly responsible for the <nucleus> suggestion of the Mountain & the location at Acton I take some interest in the book & also in its author. A good many others do the same & I think it should attract enough preliminary notice to attract some public attention to a kind of satire rather vitriolic which a large populace may conceivably fasten on with voracity.' He regards the book as 'somewhat experimental' the 'Poor Man's House' having 'more solid & artistic qualities. I cannot help thinking that there are possibilities of literary achievement quite out of the common in S. R.' The final paragraph describes a book he has acquired. TWO: 2pp. 12mo. Bifolium. He thanks him for sending 'A Poor Man's House' of which he has 'written glowingly in my two little causeries one in The Reader's Review the other in the Country House'. He asks him to 'repeat the experiment' by sending another book before commenting: 'Reynolds far exceeds my anticipation & I am proud with a certain reflected glory in having contributed before any one else to his being Deterré as Pope said of Dr. Johnson. I hope your sporting support of him will be justified & I certainly think it will.' Reynolds' entry in the Oxford DNB notes Seccombe's influence on him.
