Childe Harold's Pilgrimage is a long narrative poem in four parts written by Lord Byron. The poem was published between 1812 and 1818. Dedicated to "Ianthe" it describes the travels and reflections of a world-weary young man who is disillusioned with a life of pleasure and revelry and looks for distraction in foreign lands. After Harrow and Cambridge he embarked on the grand tour which provided material for his verses in 1812 waking to find himself famous with the publication of the first two cantos of Childe Harold. Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Paperback. Foolscap 8vo. (18 x 12 cm). In Ottoman script. 38 p., 1 b/w portrait of Byron. A heavy tear on the back cover. The Prisoner of Chillon is a 392-line narrative poem by Lord Byron. Written in 1816, it chronicles the imprisonment of a Genevois monk, François Bonivard, from 1532 to 1536. After almost 100 years later, this poem was translated into the Ottoman Turkish by Abdullah Cevdet firstly printed in Geneva. Abdullah Cevdet, (1869-1932), was a leading Ottoman/Turkish free-thinker, materialist, and Westernizer. He was born in the town of Arapgir in Ma?muret?ül-Azîz Province of the Ottoman Empire and grew up in a pious, lower-middle-class Muslim household, where he received a strict religious education. His father's stubborn refusal of smallpox vaccination left him pockmarked for life and contributed to his eventual gravitation towards scientism. Abdullah Cevdet graduated from the Military Middle School in Ma'muret'ül-Azîz in 1885, and then entered the Kuleli Military Medical Preparatory School in Istanbul. Three years later, he enrolled in the Royal Military Medical Academy. At this time, he was still very religious; one of his early poetry books from this period includes a glowing "Na't-i Serif," a eulogy for the Prophet Mu?ammad. However, like many other cadets, Abdullah Cevdet's views underwent a drastic transformation in the academy, where he became an ardent scientistic thinker and materialist. Here he produced his first translations from major works of German Vulgärmaterialismus, such as Ludwig Büchner's Kraft und Stoff and Aus Natur und Wissenschaft. He continued to translate from European writers up until his death, including Vittorio Alfieri, Émile Boutmy, Lord (or George Gordon) Byron, Jean-Marie Guyau, Baron (or Paul-Henri Dietrich) d'Holbach, Friedrich von Schiller, William Shakespeare, and François-Marie Arouet (Voltaire). One of his most important contributions to Ottoman and Turkish intellectual debate was the translation of Gustave Le Bon's writings into Turkish and the introduction of his elitist ideas to the Ottoman elite. TWO VOLUMES BOUND TOGETHER. RARE early German translation of Lord Byron's third and fourth cantos of "Don Juan" and the poems "Beppo" and "Parga" (the latter two poems translated by the poet and eminent translator Karl Julius Körner (1793-1873) and Friedrich August Gottlob Schumann (1773-1826) - a German bookseller and publisher, the father of the composer Robert Schumann). Both volumes contain frontispiece (Lambro & Laura) facing title page. 105x80mm. 159+158 pages. Brown marbled Hardcover with gilt spine. Cover and spine worn and rubbed. Cover corners bumped. Spine edges and hinges peeling. Previous owner's name written in ink title page upper corner. Some pages corner wrinkled/bumped. Pages yellowing, wavy and age-stained. [SUMMARY]: This extremely rare edition of Byron's works translated into German and published in the year of Byron's death is in good overall condition.

Begins: ‘Lord Carnarvon presents his Compliments to Mrs. Page and is extremely obliged by her polite attention in sending him the Papers relating to the boundaries of Highclere - Burghclere and Woodhay Parishes which he has no doubt will prove extremely useful to him’. He has ‘many apologies to make for not sooner acknowledging the receipt of the Papers but he has been for some time past incessantly occupied in attending the Committee on the Gt. Western Railway in the House of Lords’. He is anxious to express ‘the sincere concern he experienced in the loss of Colonel Page whose inestimable qualities as a Friend and Neighbour had been so long known and were so fully appreciated by Lord C. and all his Family. This is a rare copy of the war edition which, due to war restrictions, contains less paper than usual and shows the "Authorized Economy Standard" seal of approval on the first page. "In May 1940, Lord Northbourne’s book ‘Look to the Land’ appeared. He coined the term ‘organic farming’. His book stripped out the prolixity, abstruseness, esotericism and mysticism of Rudolf Steiner, and, with compelling clarity, Lord Northbourne presented a manifesto of organic agriculture. From this point on, biodynamics and organics have developed in parallel, with the general recognition of biodynamics as a particular manifestation of organic agriculture." According to Wikipedia, "Lord Northbourne's garden at Elizabethan Northbourne Court near Deal in Kent, set within the standing former outbuildings (the manor house burned in the 18th century) and upon ancient terracing, nurtured for a century, is reputed one of the finest in England; it is not generally open to the public."
