‎A New Hieroglyphic Bible; With Above Four Hundred Cuts‎

‎Edinburgh: Oliver & Boyd 1818. Hardcover. Very good. 12mo. 108pp. Publishers original drab brown cloth; upper board blocked in gilt with title within a floral design. Ink name on front pastedown. Cloth soiled binding lightly shaken gilt rubbed else a very good copy. The date of publication is taken from the Advertisement page 4. This seems to be the first Oliver and Boyd printing of a hieroglyphic Bible and the second Edinburgh printing after the Doig and Sterling edition of 1814. The accepted publicaton date for this Bible is 1818; three other known copies are known to have been issued either in quarter leather and marbled paper boards or in printed card covers. Our copy is in what is clearly publisher's cloth with gilt blocked on the upper board. This combination is unknown before 1826. It is likely then that the textblock while printed earlier was bound after 1826. Exceedingly scarce. Protected in a custom clamshell box. Oliver & Boyd hardcover‎

The 1611 He Bible constituted a distinct edition with the reading "and hee went into the citie" in Ruth 3:15. The second edition 1613 She Bible was printed in subsequent years 1613 1617 1634 1640/39 with the variant "and she went into the citie." The second edition is frequently found in a variant state with leaves mixed in from different years but most here appear to originate from 1617.</p><p>Arguably the most important book ever published in English. Its influence can best be summed up by G.M. Trevelyan who stated that "for every Englishman who had read Sidney or Spenser or had seen Shakespeare acted at the Globe there were hundreds who had read or heard the Bible with close attention as the words of God. The effect of the continual domestic study of the book upon the national character imagination and intelligence for nearly three centuries to come was greater than that of any literary movement in our annals or any religious movement since the coming of St. Augustine." Macaulay said of it "If everything else in our language should perish the King James Bible would alone suffice to show the whole extent of its beauty and power" PMM 114.</p><p><strong>References:</strong> Herbert 319. ‎Matthew's Tyndale Bible The Byble that is to say all the holy Scripture: In which are contayned the Olde and New Testamente truly and purely translated into English and nowe lately with greate industry and diligence recognised.‎

‎<p>London: By S. Mierdman for John Daye and William Seres 1549. Folio 11.75 x 7.75 in. </p><p><strong>Collation:</strong> Aa2 Bb6 Cc8 D-R6 S4 First Part: Gen-Deut; Aa-Tt6 Second Part: Josh-Job; Aa-Gg6 Hh8 Ii-Zz6 AAa8 Third Part: Psalms-Malachi; Aaa-Mmm6 Nnn4 Fourth Part: Apocrypha; A-T6 V8 Fifth Part: New Testament. <strong><em>Lacks</em></strong> D1 Gen 1-2 provided in good facsimile. </p><p><strong>Description: </strong>General title page 1549 surrounded by a border comprised of 14 woodcuts. Title and Almanacke printed in red and black. Two large half-page engravings before Psalms and Isaiah. Many woodcuts throughout the text. Text in black letter double columns with 65 lines to the full column. Text is ruled in red from Genesis through 2 Samuel and again throughout the New Testament. Text divided into five parts with divisional title pages to each part surrounded by two ornamental blocks and two woodcuts above and below depicting narrative scenes. This Bible contains the famous note in 1 Peter 3: "And yf she be not obedient and healpfull unto hym endevevoureth to beate the feare of God into her heae that thereby she maye be compelled to learne her duitie and do it" and is sometimes referred to as the "wife-beater Bible." The text includes Tyndale's chapter summaries and prologues including his notes in Revelation where he refers to the Pope as the antichrist.</p><p><strong>Binding:</strong> Contemporary brown calf over beveled oak boards. Covers featuring a mid-sixteenth century blind roll design within concentric frames. All metal corner- and centerpieces intact. Clasps and hasps were likely added later. Plain endpapers. Extremities lightly rubbed and scuffed but wonderfully preserved overall.</p><p><strong>Condition:</strong> Clean and bright with good margins; some of the red rules slightly faded; a few leaves with lower corner repair O4 R2 fore-margin repair Ee5-6 none of which impact the text; I45 in New Testament with small repair reducing one letter to headline; some thumbsoiling to edges; A near complete copy in a stunning contemporary binding and in far better condition than typically seen. </p><p><strong>Provenance: </strong>"David K. Parsons 2005" to front pastedown; laid down copperplate engraving depicting the final interview of John Rogers with his wife and eleven children just prior to his burning at the stake by Bloody Mary; birth records of James and Elizabeth Sage to blank leaf before Apocrypha; ex-libris stamp of David Parsons to final blank leaf. </p><p><strong>Note:</strong> The Matthew's Bible also referred to as the Matthew's-Tyndale Bible was printed in 1537 1549 two editions and 1551. Copies of the 1537 first edition are very difficult to find and rarely complete. The text was reprinted twice in 1549: one edition with the notes slightly revised by Edmund Becke and the "wife-beater" note at 1 Peter 3 this copy and the other edition being a straight reprint of the 1537 text without woodcuts and a notoriously bad printing. This edition boasts numerous woodcuts in the text especially the Pentateuch the gospels and Revelation. </p><p>John Rogers was a central figure in the history of the English Bible. Best known as the editor of the Matthew's Bible Rogers deliberately worked under the pseudonym "Thomas Matthew" to distance the volume from the condemned and dangerous name of William Tyndale. This strategic choice allowed the Bible to circulate more freely at a time when Tyndale's translations were officially banned. In reality roughly two thirds of the Matthew's Bible consists of Tyndale's work including Genesis through 2 Chronicles and the entire New Testament. Rogers helped preserve and disseminate Tyndale's translation during a period when doing so openly could invite severe punishment.</p><p>Rogers' faithfulness to Scripture ultimately cost him his life. During the reign of Queen Mary I when she sought to return England to Catholicism Rogers was arrested for heresy and became the first Protestant martyr of Mary's persecution. In 1555 he was burned at the stake at Smithfield reportedly in the presence of his wife and children bearing witness to his convictions to the end. The Matthew's Bible is considered to be the primary version of our English Bible.</p><p><strong>References:</strong> Herbert 74; Harold H. Hutson and Harold R. Front flyleaf with ink ownership inscription of Anne Robinson dated 1839; front flyleaves with ink annotations and Bible verses in three different 19th century hands laid-in note giving the chain of ownership in Anne Robinson's family for the next century. ◆Half a dozen leaves with small light brown spot margins trimmed a bit close but no loss but A VERY FINE COPY clean and fresh internally IN A SPARKLING BINDING.<br/> <br/> This charmingly bound little volume was the perfect book of Scripture for a Victorian lady and was cherished by generations of her family. The very feminine floral binding suggests that it was bound as a gift for Anne Robinson who used it very gently for her personal devotions--and no doubt as an attractive accessory to her Sunday church ensemble. The annotation of favorite passages offers insight into the owner's spiritual life and the inlaid handwritten "chain of title" is testament to our volume's status as family heirloom. Robinson and her successors clearly treasured it as it is little changed from the day it left the bindery. The condition is notably splendid here. Herbert 1442 and 1651. ◆Extremities rather rubbed boards a bit scuffed but the decorative contemporaneous bindings solid and not without appeal. Plates somewhat foxed mostly to margins mild to moderate offsetting from plates occasional mild offsetting in the text bed but still a fresh wide-margined copy.<br/> <br/> The most prodigious form of scripture in English ever published the Macklin Bible features very large and bold type fine Whatman paper and a series of engravings by some of the most celebrated artists of the period. Like the Boydell "Shakespeare Gallery" also printed by Bensley our Macklin Bible is a vast picture book with illustrations that are grand both in size and emotional impact. According to DNB Macklin 1752/3-1800 announced his intention to produce a lavishly illustrated luxuriously produced folio Bible in 1789 and he spent the next 11 years and £30000 making his dream a reality. His efforts paid off: "the subscription list for 703 copies at £46 1s. apiece was headed by the king the queen and the prince of Wales." Sadly Macklin died just five days after the last engraving was finished and did not live to see his masterpiece become one of the most acclaimed English Bibles. As DNB observes "The Macklin Bible endures as the most ambitious edition produced in Britain often pirated but never rivalled." Copies of the Macklin Bible were often put into ornate bindings as was the present set; despite the depradations of time the workmanship of a superior London binder remains apparent. T. Overall a very good copy.<br> <br> "Having published a five-volume Pentateuch-cum-haftarot lections from the Prophets translation in 1845-1846 as well as a complete vocalized and accentuated Hebrew Bible in 1848 the first such edition published in the U.S. he proceeded from April 1852 to September 1853 to extend his translation efforts to the entire Hebrew Bible. The result was his Twenty-Four Books of the Holy Scriptures the first translation of all of Tanakh into English by a Jew complete with short explanatory notes. Leeser explained in the preface to his magnum opus that he undertook the project in order to provide Anglophone Jewry with a vernacular version of the Bible "which has not been made by the authority of churches in which they can have no confidence" pp. iii-iv. The book achieved wide popularity among English-speaking Jews and even some Gentiles especially in America and went through multiple editions." Sotheby's<br> <br> "The translation of the Bible was Leeser's great literary achievement and represented many years of patient labor and devotion to a task which he considered sacred. Leeser was not fully equipped for this work for he was no specialist in Hebrew philology nor a master if Jewish learning in general and he was quite conscious of his shortcomings but he was inspired. He says in his preface: 'I thought in all due humility that I might safely go to task confidently relying upon that superior aid which is never withheld from the inquirer after truth.' He made good use of the various German translations by Jews of the collective commentary known as the Biur vol. III sec. 81 and of other Jewish exegetic works. As a result his translation though based in style upon the King James version can be considered an independent work for the changes he produced are numerous and great. His prime concern was to supply the traditional interpretation when necessary and the retention of the Jewish spirit at times even at the expense of beauty of style. The translation went through numerous editions and until the new Jewish Publication Society version was issued in 1917 it was the only source from which many Jews not conversant with Hebrew derived their knowledge of the Bible in accordance with Jewish tradition" Waxman History of Jewish Literature 1090.<br> <br> HBS 69294.<br> <br> $12500. This handsomely printed revision by Jugge is lavishly illustrated combining the woodblocks from the two previous editions with the blocks by Virgil Solis that were later used in the Bishops' Bible. The large title-page portrait features young king Edward who awarded Jugge a license to print the first edition. First chapter woodcut initials cover eleven lines of text. Divisional printed title to the Epistles of St. Paul and Revelation. Text presented with 38 lines to the full column. The father of the modern English language and the father of the English Reformation Tyndale was spurred on by the desire to "cause a boy that driveth the plow to know more of the Scripture" than the clergy of the day. He would be killed for this cause in 1536. The translation was bitterly opposed by Bloody Mary and many copies of Tyndale's Bibles were burned. Research has shown that at least eighty percent of the King James Version is Tyndale's.</p><p><strong>Scarcity</strong></p><p>USTC records 21 copies in holding with most copies lacking the title page. Oliver & Boyd hardcover books‎

‎A New Version of the Psalms of David. Fitted to the Tunes Used in Churches‎

‎Boston: Printed by Joseph Bumstead for David West 1790. pp. 358 2 ads. 1 vols. 12mo. Contemporary calf. Joints a bit tender; tiny chip at tail of spine. A beautiful unrestored copy and with Pierce family inscriptions on the endpapers. pp. 358 2 ads. 1 vols. 12mo. With unusual ownership painting on the endpaper identifying the Psalms as belonging to Benjamin Pierce's Book 1791 and depicting a man up a tree by way of ladder either to send apples to another man seated below or to read his psalms aloft in peace-- let the viewer be the judge! <br/><br/>The following leaf includes a calligraphic presentation in 1799 to James Pierce who notes its use by "the society in Brattle Square" which we take to mean the then Congregational and later c. 1805-1876 Unitarian Church on Brattle Street in Boston Massachusetts. <br/><br/>The church distinguished itself by its somewhat relaxed attitude toward rigid Calvinist practices and by iits array of important ministers: Benjamin Colman 1699-1747; William Cooper 1716-1743; Samuel Cooper 1747-1783; Peter Thacher 1785-1802; Joseph Stevens Buckminster 1805-1812; Edward Everett 1814-1815; John Gorham Palfrey 1813-1831; and Samuel Kirkland Lothrop 1834-1876. The parishioners were no less esteemed: John Hancock Samuel Adams Joseph Warren John Adams Abigail Adams Richard Clarke Elizabeth Greenleaf Jane Mecom John Lowell Lydia Hancock Henry Cabot Lodge James Bowdoin 1676-1747 and many others. Hans Gram played organ in the late 18th century. The Pierce family's early days in America perhaps coming as early as about 1620 were spent largely in New Hampshire and Massachusetts and their legacy includes Benjamin Pierce governor of New Hampshire 1827-1830 as well as ten generations spent in what is now an historic landmark of seventeenth-century architecture currently serving as a museum in Dorchester Massachusetts. It is difficult to place exactly which Benjamin Pierce and James Pierce this copy belonged to in the large and lively family. Evans 22351 Printed by Joseph Bumstead for David West unknown books‎

‎Holy Bible Abridged:‎

‎Very Rare Early American Edition of a Childrenís Pocket Bible BIBLE IN ENGLISH. The Holy Bible Abridged: Or the History of the Old and New Testament. Illustrated with Notes and Adorned with Cuts. For the Use of Children. Two lines from Luke. Boston: Samuel Hall 1791. Early American edition and first Samuel Hall edition second Boston edition. There were only a total of five Children's bibles published in America before 1791. The First American edition was printed in Boston in 1782 by Robert Hodge for N. Coverly followed by a Worcester Massachusetts 1786 edition by Isaiah Thomas 1786 and 1788 Philadelphia editions and a 1790 New York edition. Our present copy was published the year after the New York edition. Thirtytwomo 4 1/8 x 2 3/4 inches; 104 x 67 mm. 4 vii-ix 8 18-173 1 pp. With frontispiece of Adam and Eve and fifty-nine crude but charming woodcuts illustrations depicting stories from the text meant to appeal to young children. The stories that have been abridged for use in this Bible generally consist of the more well- known stories which would be of interest to children such as Creation Adam & Eve and Jonah and the Whale from the Old Testament as well as the birth baptism and crucifixion of Jesus from the New Testament. Listed in Evans but not in Sabin. We could find no copies of this edition at auction and only one copy found at the Massachusetts Historical Society. All early American editions are rare and only two complete copies of the New York 1790 edition since 1976. There was the 1786 Worcester edition at auction in 2008 but it was incomplete. Contemporary marbled paper over boards repacked with matching paper. Inner hinges strengthened. Bound without endpapers. Some soiling and toning throughout. One leaf page 145 with some fraying to the edges not affecting text. Overall very good particularly for a childrenís book. The rarity of this book can somewhat be contributed to its very small size and that it was intended for the use of children. Something as delicate and tiny as this Bible in the hands of a child had little hope for a bright future. ìBy 1789 Bible story collections specifically for children had existed in the mother country for nearly a century an active market in the American colonies had not opened up. Neither American Protestants nor American Catholics of whom were growing in numbers seemed ready to give Bible stories to their children. In the 1780ís the American situation changed radically. Boston printers pirated Newberyís Holy Bible Abridged; in 1786 the astute Worcester printer Isaiah Thomas followed suit; and by 1815 The Holy Bible Abridged had been printed in urban and provincial print centers all over the America northeast.î The Bible for Children: From the Age of Gutenberg to the Present. Minimal wear to extremities. Hinges neatly reinforced. A bright fresh copy throughout. Near fine. Martinís Biblical paintings are among the finest ever produced: ìThe spirit in which Martin worked is suggested by a passage in his catalogue for the large oil painting ëThe Fall of Ninevehí which he exhibited in lonely magnificence in 1827: ëThe mighty cities of Nineveh and Babylon have long since passed away. The accounts of their greatness and splendor may have been exaggerated. But where strict truth is not essential the mind is content to find delight in the contemplation of the grand and the marvelous. Into the solemn visions of antiquity we look without demanding the clear daylight of truth. Seen through the mist of ages the great becomes gigantic the wonderful swells into the sublimeíî Ray The Illustrator and the Book in England from 1790 to 1914 p. 44. At the front of the Bible are three leaves of a family history partially inscribed with the births deaths and marriages of three generations of the Hubbard family of Derby England during the years 1889-1943. The Genealogies which accompany this book have a similar typographical history to that of the King James Bible itself. John Speed was granted a patent in 1610 for ten years to issue and insert his Genealogies and double-page general map engraved by Elstrack in every edition of this Bible. ìThe King James Bible or the Authorized Version as it is now commonly but not strictly accurately known was the outcome of the conference summoned at Hampton Court by the King in January 1604 in an attempt to settle the quarrels in the Church of England arising from the Puritan zeal of some of its members. It was the leader of the Puritan party John Reynolds the President of Corpus Christi College Oxford who first suggested the idea of a new translation. It has been described as ëthe only literary masterpiece ever to have been produced by a committeeí and was the work of nearly fifty translators organized in six groups.Being based on a wider range of classical and oriental scholarship than its predecessors the Authorized Version was a more learned text.No new English translation was produced until the Revised Version of 1881 and the influence of the Authorized Version may best be described in the words of G.M. Trevelyan. ëFor every Englishman who had read Sidney or Spenser or had seen Shakespeare acted at the Glove there were hundreds who had read or heard the Bible with close attention as the words of God. The effect of the continual domestic study of the book upon the national character imagination and intelligence for nearly three centuries to come was greater than that of any literary movement in our annals or any religious movement since the coming of St Augustineíî Printing and the Mind of Man 114 describing the 1611 first edition.
