Neither item with place or date. Both items are laid down on a leaf removed from an autograph album. Both in good condition with light signs of age. The photographic print of Gladstone measures 9 x 5.5 with the head and shoulders image in an oval 7.5 cm high by 5 cm wide and showing a middle-aged Gladstone with dark bow tie and frock coat staring to the right. Beneath the photograph is a 9.5 x 9 cm piece of paper cut from the conclusion of a letter reading: '. difficult however to follow circumstances with which we are imperfectly acquainted We are now on the eve of going abroad for a <> I remain dear Sir Your very faithful servant W E Gladstone W. Gifford Palgrave' to "Dear Joseph" regretting he is unable to make the journey William Palgrave Gifford. Speaker's Court the Palace Westminster undated. 15x10 cm. In English. 2 pp. in good condition with a separate photographic portrait of Palgrave. William Gifford Palgrave was an English priest soldier traveller and Arabist author of A Personal Narrative of a Year's Journey through Central and Eastern Arabia 1862-1863. Palgrave was born in Westminster. He was the son of Sir Francis Palgrave and Elizabeth Turner daughter of the banker Dawson Turner. His brothers were Francis Turner Palgrave Inglis Palgrave and Reginald Palgrave. He was educated at Charterhouse School then occupying its original site near Smithfield and under the head-mastership of Dr Saunders afterwards Dean of Peterborough. Among other honours he won the school gold medal for classical verse and proceeded to Trinity College Oxford where he obtained a scholarship graduating First Class Lit. Hum. Second Class Math. 1846. He went straight from college to India and served for a time in the 8th The King's Regiment of Foot Bombay Native Infantry H.I.C. Shortly after this he became a Roman Catholic was ordained a priest and joined the order of the Jesuits Society of Jesus and served as a member of the order in India Rome and in Syria where he acquired a colloquial command of Arabic. He convinced his superiors to support a mission to the interior of Arabia which at that time was terra incognita to the rest of the world. He also gained the support of the French emperor Napoleon III representing to him that better knowledge of Arabia would benefit French imperialistic schemes in Africa and the Middle East. Palgrave then returned to Syria where he assumed the identity of a travelling Syrian physician. Stocking his bags with medicines and small trade goods and accompanied by one servant he set off for Najd in north-central Arabia. He travelled as a Christian. The service he would do for the Society of Jesus and the French empire would be as a spy not a missionary. Palgrave became friendly with Faisal bin Turki bin Abdullah Al Saud while in Riyadh Saudi Arabia. Faisal's son Abdul Rahman bin Faisal asked Palgrave to get him strychnine. Palgrave believed that Abdul wanted to poison his father. Palgrave was accused of espionage and was almost executed for his Christian beliefs. <br/> <br/> Manuscript ALS., [ca. 1875] unknown

Folding map of the Rio de la Plata. Stamp of the library of the "Sociedade Brasileira de Cultura Inglesa" with book number and the mention "1959" in blue ballpoint pen on the back of the first page of the preface. Preface, table of contents, numerous illustrations throughout the book, and an index of subscribers. The binding is in excellent condition, the slightly yellowish-gray paper is intact and entirely legible. This book recounts the ill-fated second voyage of the Duff, a missionary ship en route to the South Sea Islands in 1798. It was only the second attempt at a missionary voyage to the Pacific. A year earlier, the Duff had successfully undertaken its first voyage, settling members of the London Missionary Society and their families on the islands of Tahiti, Tonga, and the Marquesas. However, this second attempt ended in disastrous failure. Captured first by a French privateer who mistook the Duff for a ship carrying Governor King to Australia, and then again by a Portuguese fleet, the group was forced to return to Lisbon, and William Gregory returned to England in 1800. William Gregory describes the details of his treatment in captivity, life in Spanish America (Uruguay, Argentina, Paraguay), as well as indigenous life in the "enemy port" of Montevideo and the surrounding rich estuary of the Rio de la Plata, its "products, inhabitants, clothing, customs, commerce [and] religion." *************************************** Londres, T. William Henry Harrison physician and author Autograph Letter Signed 'W H Harrison' to 'Mr Green Messrs Stewart & Co Old Bailey'.
'Monday' no date but docketed 'Dec 1837'; '33 New B. S.' i.e. 33 New Burlington Street London. 12mo 1 p 10 lines. On worn discoloured paper with slight loss due to the breaking of two seals. Text clear and entire. The letter has been readdressed in another hand hence the two seals to 'Mr Price Crease & Sons Smithfield'. Harrison quotes his 'friend of the L. G. i.e. the Literary Gazette' as follows: 'Your D'Israeli paper may be useful as there is a new Edition. May I do as I like with its matter' He asks for 'an answer as soon as possible'.
