‎AN IMPORTANT COLLECTION, IN EXCELLENT CONDITION, OF 19TH-CENTURY DEPICTIONS OF PYRENEAN SCENERY, executed in lithography (often hand-colored), aquatint, and engraving. ***(1) An unusually fine set of Melling's large folio "Voyage pittoresque dans les Pyrenees francais" (1826-1830), complete with 72 delicate aquatints, a map, a lithographed portrait of the artist, and the text by Cervini. Attractively bound and with clean, unfoxed plates (most unusual for this book). ***(2) TWO fine sets of Victor Petit's folio "Souvenirs des Pyrenees", with about 50 lithographs per set. The first set is beautifully hand-colored on fine wove paper; the second set uncolored on chine. As usual with these albums, the sets offer interesting bibliographical differences. ***(3) Two beautiful sets (30 lithographs per set) of Petit's folio "Bagneres de Luchon et ses environs", one colored and one uncolored on chine. ***(4) Two excellent (and different) complete sets of Ciceri's "Les Pyrenees dessinees d'apres nature", both very fresh, in their original bindings. ***(5) Two copies (one colored, one uncolored) of "Alpes et Pyrenees" (1842), both in publisher's cloth. ***(6) Several additional albums by Gorse (two, one with rectangular lithographs and one with oval), Allom, and others, including a few miniature albums. Many of these items are quite rare, and all are in very good condition. Several hundred prints in all. An outstanding collection. (I may consider selling one or more items separately. ‎* Herman Melville, geboren als Herman Melvill, (* 1. August 1819 in New York City, New York; ? 28. September 1891 ebenda) war ein amerikanischer Schriftsteller, Dichter und Essayist. Melvilles erster Roman Typee handelt von der Reise zweier Deserteure durch die Südsee. Der Abenteuerroman traf den Geschmack der Zeit, trotz seiner Kritik am Kolonialismus und der vorbehaltlosen Darstellung der Indigenen. Die Tantieme des nachfolgenden Romans Omoo ermöglichte ihn schließlich die Heirat mit Elizabeth Shaw. 1847 erschien der Roman Mardi und eine Reise dorthin. Melville selbst sah in seinem dritten Werk die Wende in seinem Schaffen. Das Südseeabenteuer entwickelt sich nach der Flucht zweier Seefahrer zur Seelenreise und Kosmogonie und endet in einer allegorischen Satire, darin er die Vergeblichkeit nationalstaatlichen Machtstrebens karikiert. Die zahlreichen Diskurse, das Anhäufen von Beschreibungen, die reiche sprachliche und stilistische Variation wie Schilderung seelisch-leiblicher Vorgänge, welche die Ausweglosigkeit und Absurdität aber auch Tragik des Handelnden zeigen, lassen die Totalität des Epos im modernen Roman wiederaufscheinen. In den zwei darauffolgenden Werken Redburne und Weißjacke oder die Welt auf einem Kriegsschiff wählte Melville das Schiff als Mikrokosmos. Obzwar er beide Werke wegen ihrer vermeintlich mangelnden sprachlichen Kraft später abwertete, nicht zuletzt aufgrund ihrer zum Vorgängerroman geringeren Innovationsdichte, können sie als Intensivierung wie Straffung seines Vorgängers gelesen werden. Im Gegensatz zu Mardi sind die Hauptfiguren nicht nur als Allegorien oder Stellvertreter von Ideen gezeichnet, sondern als Charaktere fassbar und in der weißen Jacke des namenlosen Matrosen fasst Melville erstmals das Symbol des Nichts wie später im Wal Moby Dick. Als maritime Romane gehören sie wegen ihres Realismus zu den zugänglichen Werken des Autors. Mit seinem Roman Moby-Dick oder der weiße Wal verfasste er in der Fabel einer Waljagd das tragische Epos vom Antihelden Ahab, der auf der Suche nach Vergeltung am Verursacher seines abgetrennten Unterbeines den Untergang wählt. Der Roman zählt zu den bedeutendsten Werken der US-amerikanischen Literatur und wird wegen seinen formalen und stilistischen Erneuerungen als Vorläufer zahlreicher erst im 20. Jahrhundert veröffentlichter Romane der klassischen Moderne genannt. Der Roman zählt zu den bedeutendsten Werken der Weltliteratur. Bereits mit Mardi und erneut mit Moby Dick bleib der finanzielle Erfolg aus. Dies war nicht zuletzt eine Reaktion auf seine erzählerische Eigentümlichkeit wie verwegene Themenwahl ? der darauffolgende Eheroman Pierre oder die Doppeldeutigkeiten behandelt einen geschwisterlichen Inzest ?, wenngleich seine Erzählungen, die 1856 unter The Piazza Tales erschienen von Zeitgenossen als literarische Leistungen gewürdigt wurden. Die vier Erzählungen, darunter Benito Cereno und Bartleby der Schreiber, zeigen Melville erneut als großen Erneuerer der US-amerikanischen Prosa und herausragenden Vertreter der Weltliteratur. 1857 erschien mit The Confidence-Man Melvilles letzter Roman. Der ehemalige Seefahrer musste bis zu seinem Renteneintritt wegen seines geringen Auskommens als Zöllner im New Yorker Hafen arbeiten. Im späten Alter verfasste er seinen ersten Gedichtband. Darauf folgte das Versepos Clarel und der Gedichtband John Marr and Other Sailors. Sein letztes Werk, die postum herausgegebene Novelle Billy Budd erlangte Weltruhm. Melvilles Lyrik die ähnlich seinen mittleren und späten Romanen sich an dem poetischen Theorem der Blackness, einer Heroik in der Moderne sowie der Totalität des Epos orientiert und seelische Grenzbereiche wie Schmerz, Wahn, das Leiden wie Erlösungsverlangen thematisiert, wird der Hermetik zugeordnet.
