Philip Bourke Marston 1850 1887 blind English poet protege of Dante Gabriel Rossetti and friend of James Thomson 'B. V.' John
Manuscript Letter written by an amanuensis for the blind poet 'P. B. Marston' Philip Bourke Marston to John T. Baron of Blackburn referring to two of his books and to a photograph taken six years before which 'does not please' his friends.
191 Euston Road London. 11 October 1882. 3pp. 12mo. Bifolium. In stamped and postmarked envelope addressed in the same hand to 'J. Y. sic Baron Esq. 48 Griffin Street Tritton Blackburn'. In good condition on lightly-aged paper in slightly discoloured envelope. It is not known who acted as Marston's amanuensis after the death of his sister Cicely in 1878: the present letter is written in a neat and somewhat childish hand. It dates from what had been an extremely trying year for Marston with Rossetti dying the previous April and the dying James Thomson being carried from Marston's rooms two months later. Baron was a shameless autograph hunter and in response to one of his stock requests Marston begins: 'Dear Sir I am sorry to have misunderstood your inquiry as I see I have done. My two books are published by Chatto & Windus of Piccadilly where I have no doubt they can be procured'. He would be glad to send Baron a photograph but he has none. 'I was last taken six years ago & had only a few copies made' an engraving from one of them appearing in 'Harper's Magazine' in May of the same year in an article entitled 'some London Poets' 'but in case you should come across it I may say that it does not please my friends'. He concludes with thanks for Baron's 'warm wishes'. 191 Euston Road, London. 11 October 1882. unknown

Philip Hermogenes Calderon (1833-1898), English painter born in France of Spanish extractino, member of St John's Wood Clique, K
Autograph Letter Signed 'Philip H Calderon.' from Philip Hermogenes Calderon member of the St John's Wood Clique to fellow-artist John Callcott Horsley describing a trip to the 'dissolute city' of Paris.
On letterhead of 9 Marlborough Place St John's Wood NW. 'Sunday Evening' no date. 3pp. 12mo. Bifolium with mourning border. Good on lightly-aged paper with thin neat strip of paper mount at head of third page. The sense of humour for which the St John's Wood Clique was known is reflected in the letter which begins: 'Marks Storey and I have just returned from Paris to which dissolute city we went to see the "Salon" and after a hard course of study of pictures frescoes elaborate "menus" at Champeaux and female costume reduced to its simplest form at Offenbach's Theatre - where it chiefly consists of a belt with a few small coins hanging about here we are home again - to Virtue Simplicity and Work!' He is sorry to be late replying: Horsley's friend's drawing is a good one and he has 'many friends better able than myself to advise him'. 'The sending in is to-morrow and so good luck to him - I am sure he thoroughly deserves it.' Calderon writes that he and his colleagues were all very sorry to learn the cause of Horsley's absence from the last meeting: 'it was badly attended - besides yourself - Ward and Leighton were absent - but very interesting as Cope brought forward his motion'. Calderon has 'seriously studied the "lighting" at the Salon' and wants to 'try it in one room here'. He ends by asking: 'Will you back me up' On letterhead of 9 Marlborough Place, St John's Wood, NW. 'Sunday Evening' [no date]. unknown

Philip R. Morris Philip Richard Morris 1836 1902 English genre and marine artist S. C. Hall Samuel Carter Hall 1800 1889 Anglo
Autograph Letter Signed 'Phil. R. Morris' from the marine artist Philip R. Morris to S. C. Hall discussing his difficulty in finding someone to propose him for the Royal Academy.
On letterhead of the Junior Athenaeum Club Piccadilly. 30 January 1874. 4pp. 12mo. Good on lightly-aged paper. He gives his 'best thanks' for his correspondent's 'watchful kindness'. As his 'acquaintance with Academicians is very limited' he has 'not yet solicited any one to propose me at the R.A.' and he 'would gladly accept Mr. E. M. Ward's obliging offer - and think Mr. G. D. Leslie or Mr Dobson would second me'. He made 'such a mistake' the previous evening by going to the Vestry Hall Chelsea. He found 'on reading the circular again how I had erred'. He regrets 'to have lost the pleasure of hearing you read Sir Jasper - Another regret not unmixed with shame is that the design for Mrs S. C. Hall's tales is not yet complete but in a few days I will send it.' Hall's 'Trial of Sir Jasper: A Temperance Tale in Verse' was published in 1873. On letterhead of the Junior Athenaeum Club, Piccadilly. 30 January 1874. unknown

PHILIPS, John (1676-1709)

London: printed for E. Curll in Covent-Garden 1744. Full Calf. Fine. 12mo: xxx42;72pp with frontispiece portrait of the poet frontispiece to the separately paginated Cyder woodcut head- and tailpieces. Contemporary speckled calf covers framed with double fillets in gilt spine with five raised bands ruled in gilt recent red morocco lettering piece gilt edges speckled red. A Fine—indeed exceptional—copy. Foxon p. 570. Tenth Edition but first under this title collecting The Splendid Shilling; Blenheim An Ode in Latin and English and most importantly Cyder—A Poem in Two Books Fourth Edition printed for J. and R. Tonson and S. Draper 1744. Many of Philips's poems including his first the Splendid Shilling which The Tatler commended as "the finest Burlesque Poem in the British Language" were composed in Miltonic blank verse. "Philips's greatest poem the two-book georgic Cyder 1708 begun at Oxford celebrates his native land and in particular Herefordshire with a combination of accurate knowledge of apples and cider making and a ‘sketch of our National History.' The botanist Philip Miller told Dr. Johnson that ‘there were many books written on the same subject in prose which do not contain so much truth as that poem.' . . . Philips taught Pope who drew on Cyder in Windsor Forest how to use Paradise Lost for un-Miltonic purposes and to suggest that paradise might still be found in England's green and pleasant land." ODNB. printed for E. Curll, in Covent-Garden unknown

Philips, John.
POEMS ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS.
pp. 12 (Ode to Henry S. John; in English and Latin); 36 (Life of Philips by Sewell); 8 (Splendid Shilling)[1719]; 28 (Blenheim); 71 (Cyder); 1 (Publisher's Advertisement) + Engraved portrait frontispiece and engraved plate at 'Cyder. Both plates engraved by Gucht. 12mo. 165 mm. Original full leather binding; cracked at joints. Age stain to fly leaves. Manuscript ownership of J. Chappel Woodhouse, 1772 (Woodhouse apparently was Rector of Donington, in Shropshire). Engraved bookplate of George F. Northall. Hardbound. Scarce Third Edition. John Philips (1676-1709), English poet, was one of the few to write in blank / free verse in an age when the heroic couplet was the standard form. His 'Splendid Shilling' (1701, 1705) is a parody of Milton. 'Cyder' (1708), a utilitarian poem describing the cultivation of apples and the pressing of cider, is modeled after Virgil's 'Georgics'. This is a fine early collection of of Philips' major poems, works that, "written in revolt against the heroic couplet, between the death of Dryden and the appearance of Pope, occupy an important position in the history of English literature." The various editions of Philips's poetry are all nonce collections (with separate title pages, and often variant imprint details and dates). Foxon, p. 570 (incorporating p242 and p249); CBEL II 563. Scarce. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! W140
