(THEOLOGY - ENGLISH, 16TH CENTURY). [PERKINS, WILLIAM]
A REFORMED CATHOLIKE OR A DECLARATION SHEWING HOW NEERE WE MAY COME TO THE PRESENT CHURCH OF ROME IN SUNDRIE POINTS OF RELIGION AND WHEREIN WE MUST FOR EVER DEPART FROM THEM
Cambridge: John Legat 1598. Second Printing. 153 x 98 mm. 6 x 3 7/8". 4 p.l. 375 1 pp.
Modern sprinkled calf blind-ruled covers raised bands flanked by double gilt rules brown morocco label remnants of paper library shelf label at tail of spine. Printer's device on title page. Front pastedown with bookplate of the Fox Pointe Collection; rear pastedown with deaccession stamp of Bradford City Libraries. STC 19736; ESTC 19736. ◆Spine just faintly sunned leaves lightly browned due to paper quality and trimmed a bit close at head grazing headline on a couple of leaves isolated marginal stains or tiny rust spots but an excellent copy fresh and clean in a sympathetic binding with few signs of wear.

This was an important work in establishing distinctions in liturgy and doctrine between the Catholic Church and the Church of England written by a moderate puritan whom DNB considers "perhaps the most significant English theologian of his age." Perkins 1558-1602 was one of the most popular voices of his time speaking from a Calvinist puritan point of view; while he could be virulently anti-Catholic he did not believe in repudiating the English church only in reforming it. According to DNB "The genius of Perkins's work did not lie in its originality—his theology represents a conventional recital of Calvinist scholasticism in virtually every respect. His gift lay rather in bringing to a broad audience a variety of theological and moral issues popularizing essentially technical discussions and therefore as Fuller observed humbling 'the towering speculations of philosophers into practice and morality.'" The present work spread his polemical influence beyond England to the Continent; even the Catholic bishop William Bishop admitted he had "not seene any book of like quality published by a Protestant to contain either more matter or delivered in better method." Both the 1597 first edition and our 1598 second printing are rare: no other copies of either edition are recorded at auction by RBH or ABPC in the past 50 years. John Legat unknown

(TRAVEL - 19TH CENTURY ENGLISH). (BIBLICAL HISTORY IN ASIA MINOR). ARUNDELL, V J
A VISIT TO THE SEVEN CHURCHES OF ASIA; WITH AN EXCURSION INTO PISIDIA; CONTAINING REMARKS ON THE GEOGRAPHY AND ANTIQUITIES OF THOSE COUNTRIES. A MAP OF THE AUTHOR'S ROUTES AND NUMEROUS INSCRIPTIONS
London: John Rodwell 1828. FIRST EDITON. 217 x 138 mm. 8 1/2 x 5 1/4". iv 339 1 pp.
Contemporary diced russia raised bands spine attractively gilt in an arabesque style gilt-rolled turn-ins pink moiré endpapers all edges gilt. With a folding map of the travel routes and 23 pages reproducing inscriptions three of these folding. Front flyleaf inscribed in ink: "Juliana Calvert / from A. C. / 1838." Blackmer 48; Weber I 159. Joints and extremities a little rubbed tiny crack just beginning at top of front joint two tiny chips to foot of spine very minor offsetting and foxing to map a couple of patches of marginal foxing but INTERNALLY AN ESPECIALLY FINE COPY--unusually clean fresh and surprisingly bright--in a good-looking well-preserved binding.

In especially desirable condition this is quite a scarce travel account by the English antiquary explorer and clergyman Francis Vyvyan Jago Arundell 1780-1846 who visited the so-called Seven Churches of Asia also called the Seven Churches of the Apocalypse and the Seven Churches of Revelation locations in present-day Turkey of central importance to St. John and the Book of Revelation. In that book John who was a threat to Roman officials as leader of the new Christian religion in Asia had been banished to Patmos where he was visited by an apocalyptic vision directing him to write to the churches at Ephesus Smyrna Pergamum Thyatira Sardis Philadelphia and Laodicea commending their successes pointing out their failures and prevailing upon them to repent. These seven Turkish churches reflect a surprisingly significant role in the region's early Christian history with some scholars maintaining that as many as 18 of the 27 New Testament books were written there--and Arundell's narrative would have helped to raise the popular understanding of this importance. Following his marriage to the daughter of the British consul-general at the Levant Company in Constantinople Arundell became chaplain to the company's trading center in Smyrna now Izmir in 1822. From there he embarked on a series of tours through Asia Minor including places that according to DNB "until then had for the most part not been described by any European traveller." The present work is the product of the author's first tour which included two separate excursions between March and September of 1826. Despite being a clergyman Arundell's interest in these sites was primarily archaeological and historical and this work includes his firsthand descriptions of the ruins he encountered facsimiles of Greek inscriptions found there and narratives of the arduous journeys between sites that were well off the beaten path. This work is surprisingly scarce in commerce suggesting that copies were often read with avidity. John Rodwell unknown

(VELLUM PRINTING). BIBLE IN ENGLISH
THE PSALMS OF DAVID
London: Edmund Evans for Sampson Low Son and Co 1862. ONE OF PERHAPS 10 COPIES PRINTED ON VELLUM. 260 x 195 mm. 10 1/4 x 7 3/4". vii 1 235 1 pp.
Publisher's stiff vellum smooth spine with gilt lettering edges untrimmed. In a modern felt-lined blue buckram drop-back box. Decorative initials in red or blue title page and text leaves with full criblé border of vined foliation occasionally inhabited eight or 10 leaves with more extensive illustrations at head or foot all engraved by W. J. Linton after illustrations by John Franklin. Front pastedown with ex-libris of Marion Hope Rattey. A Large Paper Copy. McLean "Victorian Book Design" p. 184. Short thin cracks to head and tail of front joint spine vaguely soiled upper cover with two very small brown spots and one trivial red mark occasional mild rumpling or naturally occurring variations in the grain or thickness of the vellum as usual a couple of minor smudges but still a very agreeable copy the binding solid and without the splaying common in vellum books the interior clean fresh and bright and the margins extraordinarily wide.

This is an infrequently encountered copy of a beautiful Victorian book on vellum issued by one of the era's top printers. The volume was printed by Edmund Evans 1826-1905 who is now best remembered for his illustrations and advances in color wood engravings. Relatively little is known about this book's production: Ruari McLean tells us that it was "entirely printed" by Evans but it is unknown whether he was responsible for the design as well McLean remarks that "if Evans was responsible for its design it shows his superiority in book-making". We also are unsure how many copies were printed on vellum although the general consensus is 10. Regardless as McLean tells us "it is one of the prettiest books of the 'sixties" with sharp deep impressions of the type on the rich creamy vellum jewel-like colored initials and elegant wood-engraved illustrations. These illustrations are the work of John Franklin ca.1800-68 a painter and draftsman who was highly respected in his own time. The precisely realized borders feature idealized human forms posed within a robust botanical largely acanthus context the figures posing with balletic grace their expressive faces often turned gently away from the reader. The size of the leaf here is significant: the untrimmed edges retain their tiny printing pinholes which would normally have been trimmed away with regrettable loss. And not surprisingly our vellum printing is almost never seen: we could trace just two copies at auction since 1924. Former owner Marion Hope Rattey 1922-97 was likely the daughter of bibliographer Clifford C. Rattey 1886-1970 whose impressive library featured incunabula and block prints. 40 [Jewish Food Finally Appears in the Dominant General English Cookbook] Acton, Eliza Engravings by Henry Adlard [Lady Judith M
MODERN COOKERY FOR PRIVATE FAMILIES: REDUCED TO A SYSTEM OF EASY PRACTICE IN A SERIES OF CAREFULLY TESTED RECEIPTS IN WHICH THE PRINCIPLES OF BARON LIEBIG AND OTHER EMINENT WRITERS HAVE BEEN AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE APPLIED AND EXPLAINED ; INCLUDING: "FOREIGN AND JEWISH COOKERY"
London: Longman Brown Green and Longmans. Printed by Woodfall and Kinder 1858. Newly revised and much enlarged edition the 3rd printing to include "Foreign and Jewish Cookery." Late 19th Century Cloth Binding 12mo; xlvii 643 32 pages 714 total 8 leaves of plates all present. 18 cm.
Early printing following the addition in 1855 three years earlier of a new section on "Foreign and Jewish Cookery;" That was also the first edition issued under the now-famous title Modern Cookery for Private Families.
Includes index and 32-page publisher's catalogue after text.

Famously Lady Judith Montefiore published the first English-language Kosher cookbook The Jewish Manual in 1846 primarily for other Jewish housewives and meal planners.
Less than a decade later however leading British cookbook author Eliza Acton took Lady Montefiore's Jewish cooking tips one step further celebrating and normalizing them for cooks of all backgrounds across the Commonwealth through a new expanded edition of her best-selling cookbook Modern Cookery.
Journalist Rita Ehrlich notes that between these two works "The first Jewish recipes published in English reveal the place of accomplished Jewish women in 19th Century high society.
Among the welter of cookbooks published in 19th century England Eliza Acton's Modern Cookery for Private Families stands out for its clarity its practicality its occasional humour and its inclusion of Jewish food.
First published in 1845.The 1855 edition included a section on Foreign and Jewish Cookery and among the recipes was one for Jewish Almond Pudding. It was one of the few recipes Acton had not tested herself. 'We have tasted the puddings . more than once and have received the exact directions for them from the Jewish lady at whose house they were made.'
A Jewish lady - presumably the same one - provided her and thereby the readers with the address of a Jewish butcher in the London suburb of Aldgate from whom one could procure smoked beef and a chorissa sausage. Acton noted that 'all meat supplied by Jew butchers is sure to be of first-rate quality as they are forbidden by the Mosaic Law to convert into food any animal which is not perfectly free from all 'spot or blemish''. She also noted that the Jewish dietary laws which forbade the mixing of dairy and meat were 'not very rigidly observed' by most English Jews.
The date of that book is striking. Jews were part of English society by 1855 with a Jewish Lord Mayor of London Sir David Salomons a leader in the campaign to allow Jews to sit in Parliament. Lionel de Rothschild took his seat in Parliament in 1858 the year of this copy's publication following the passing of the Jews Relief Act. He had been elected a number of times; the sticking point had been the need to swear the oath 'upon the true Faith of a Christian'.
Even if we did not know about the number of wealthy highly regarded and influential Jews in London at that time the fact that an author would include specifically Jewish recipes and shopping advice in a bestselling cookbook that also recommended Jewish butchers for the quality of the meat suggests strongly that there was companionable social exchange.
The almond pudding recipe appeared in an earlier book published in 1846 called The Jewish Manual edited by A Lady no doubt the same lady who had entertained Eliza Acton. She was almost certainly Lady Judith Montefiore wife of the influential philanthropist Sir Moses Montefiore and the book was the first Jewish cookbook in the English language" Rita Ehrlich When 'A Lady' taught the English to cook kugel and Jews to be English 2022.
thejewishindependent.com.au/when-a-lady-taught-the-english-to-cook-kugel-and-jews-to-be-english.

Eliza Acton 1799-1859 "was an English food writer and poet who produced one of Britain's first cookery books aimed at the domestic reader Modern Cookery for Private Families this work. The book introduced the now-universal practice of listing ingredients and giving suggested cooking times for each recipe. It included the first recipes in English for Brussels sprouts and for spaghetti. Some time after Modern Cookery was published Acton moved from Tonbridge to Hampstead north west London. She became the cookery correspondent for the weekly magazines The Ladies' Companion and Household Words and began writing.a new edition of Modern Cookery. This was published in 1855 and renamed as Modern Cookery for Private Families the name by which it is best known. This version contains an additional chapter named 'Foreign and Jewish Cookery'; the Jewish recipes are from Ashkenazi cuisine" Wikipedia.
Indeed Eliza Acton's "Modern Cookery. "is considered the first practical cookbook specifically geared toward the everyday cook. The schoolteacher poet and cookery writer Eliza Acton 1799-1859 published a number of poems as a young woman and 'in 1837 . her publishers Longmans suggested she should write something more practical than poetry so for the next few years she applied herself to meticulous research for the work by which she is best known: Modern Cookery for Private Families first published in 1845. The book was well received on its first appearance; critics thought it the best cookery book they had seen combining as it did clarity of instructions with excellent organisation.
The book was a lasting success running into several editions and was the standard work on the subject until the end of the century establishing Eliza Acton as the first of the modern cookery writers. She wrote with great charm and clarity but what marked the book as innovative was her original plan of listing very exactly the ingredients the time taken and pitfalls for the inexperienced cook. This was a completely new format all other books on the subject being far less exact in their instructions.
This became the standard way of writing cookery books."Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.

Modern food journalists Sue Dyson and Roger McShane suggest that Acton's Modern Cookery "is an absolutely essential part of any serious cookbook collection" https://foodtourist.com/modern-cookery-for-private-families-by-eliza-acton.

Contents:- Introductory Chapters.
