A heroic poem about the bloody but inconclusive battle at Talavera, southwest of Madrid (July 27-28, 1809), in which a combined British-Spanish force under Sir Arthur Wellesley (later Duke of Wellington) forced the French army of King Joseph Bonaparte, brother of Napoleon, to withdraw from field. The author, John Wilson Croker, was a high-Tory politician and man of letters, one of the founders of the legendary Quarterly Review and for nearly thirty years its primary contributor. Wellington himself singled out this poem for praise. Surprisingly uncommon: we find no copy of the first or this second edition, Copac locates the third and later editions only.

A Narrative of the Grand Festival, at Yarmouth, on Tuesday, the 19th of April, 1814; with an Appendix, Containing Copies of all the Handbills which were Published on the Occasion; a List of the Subscribers; and an Account of the Expenditure.
First Edition, 4to (260 x 205 mm), [2], 72pp., large paper copy, with an additional portrait of the author engraved by John Collyers, title-page printed in red and black, added engraved title depicting Neptune with trident framed by scenes of the celebrations, large folding engraved plan of the table layout along the quay, one further engraved plate, contemporary crimson morocco-backed boards, original pink printed label on upper cover, spine rubbed and joints cracked. A festival to celebrate the fall of Napoleon I, April 1814. a vivid account of the 'grand festival' in Great Yarmouth was written by Robert Cory, a local businessman and the builder of a suspension bridge across the River Yare which collapsed in 1845 with considerable loss of life. Inclusively was again the order of the day, and on a larger scale than at Cambridge: over 9,000 people were fed at fifty-eight tables stretched along the waterfront. An afternoon of feasting, donkey-racing and a 'pig hunt' culminated in the burning of a vast, symbolic bonfire representing the 'Funeral Pile of the Buonapartean Dynasty'. Despite concerns prompted by the participation of 'the lowest order of society', everything passed off peacefully. Even the weather obliged: the drizzle stopped five minutes before dinner was served.

This novel by Daniel Defoe (1660-1731) was first published on 25 April 1719, the first edition crediting the work's protagonist Robinson Crusoe as its author, leading many readers to believe he was a real person and the book a travelogue of true incidents; thus many editions, like the present one, did not even mention Defoe as the author. 150x110mm. 336 pages. Quarter-leather Hardcover with gilt ribbed spine. Cover stained and worn. Rear cover bottom part peeling and partly missing. Cover corners and edges peeling. Front cover almost detached. Spine rubbed and detached from front cover. Spine hinges partly cracked and worn. Spine edges peeling and partly missing. Sticker residues on spine hinges. Binding slightly visible between rear endpaper and whitepage. Ink marks on inner cover, front whitepage and title page. Title page, first illustration and page 1/2 detached from binding and have slightly worn edges/corners. Title page and page 1/2 wrinkled. Page 335/336 and rear whitepage detached. Inner cover, whitepages and few pages age-stained. About half of the pages bottom corner water-stained. Few page edges slightly worn/dog-eared. Some pages slightly age-stained. Pages yellowing and wavy. [SUMMARY]: This extremely rare beautifully illustrated edition of a classic novel that marked the beginning of realistic fiction as a literary genre, and became one of the most widely published books in history, has sustained some damage (mainly to cover), but is otherwise in good reading condition. This copy sewn on meeting guards with silk endbands. Bound in dyed calf and finished with recessed stone veneer over sheep skiver dyed calf inlays and onlays as well as onlays in lizard. Subtly titled in blind across one of the onlays at the spine. Paper doublures with dyed calf hinges. <br /> <br /> Botehlo writes of this book being "filled with etchings of heavy lined and voluptuous shapes with textures and shade all done in black. The poetry evoked for me the verdancy of rogue plants that spring up between the cracks of concrete. It spoke of the appeal of being a snake allusions to original sin. I wanted the green onlays that have been dyed and embossed to be pillowed the stone inviting touch. I intended to create something that invites a sensory exploration." And here she has succeeded with astonishing grace creating a design that draws and keeps the attention. Wonderfully conceived and executed with exceptional skill. Color plates throughout with illustrations of scripture scenes. Dual-column text with study notes and references in the footer. Verso states 'This Bible reprinted from new clear type is an identical reproduction of the edition published by the John Murphy Company.' While the verso reproduces the 1914 John Murphy copyright and no other date we believe it was printed in the early 20's. 8vo Smyth-sewn binding with overcast stitching printed on fine India paper with art-gilt edges and bound in black morrocco goatskin leather with gilt stamped lettering. With some spordic pen markings mainly confined to the Old Testament in the early few pages of Genesis the Books of Kings and early pages of Isaias along with a few pages in Matthew with mostly pencil. We have carefully paged through this copy and found no other markings; condition is entirely clean and fresh otherwise with crisp binding and very supple leather--an astounding survival after 110 years kept in vibrant condition by the original publisher's slipcase which shows some light wear around the edges. Yokohama. 1867. Map 25 x 35.3cm some creasing where it was once folded a few old repairs to corners with s closed tear along the upper margin sheet browned with a little spotting now professionally backed onto washi. Text in English. Scarce map. This scarce historically significant map depicts Yokohama’s foreign settlement shortly before the devastating fire of 26 November 1866. Known contemporaneously as the Butaya 豚屋 “Pork Shop” Fire or the Kannai 関内 Fire the blaze began in a pork restaurant and rapidly engulfed the adjoining brothel quarter resulting in the deaths of more than 400 prostitutes. One third of the Japanese quarter and approximately one quarter of the foreign settlement were destroyed. <br> <br>The map offers a valuable record of the township as it appeared prior to the disaster. It clearly marks the English and French Consulates the English and French wharfs and the English Naval Yard. Also shown is the well-known brothel Gankirō 岩亀楼 situated in the upper central area which catered to Western clientele. <br> <br>Yokohama had opened as a treaty port in 1859 and Western residents quickly established themselves near the waterfront. <br> <br>Following the 1866 fire the foreign concession was rebuilt in Western architectural styles while the brothel district was relocated outside the concession boundary. . unknown

25 November to 19 December 1771. Twenty-two leaves stitched last leaf loose in original marbled wraps. 12mo roughly ten centimeters by fifteen centimetres. Written in a small neat hand over columns ruled in red. In good condition although worn and dogeared except for the loose leaf which is discoloured frayed and worn and rear wrap which carries accounts on its interior which has loss to the foot. Text entirely legible. Clearly part of the accounts of one of the 'morocco men' employed by contractors to travelled the country selling quarter eighth and sixteenth-part shares in ten pound lottery tickets see the entry on 'LOTTERIES' in Encyclopaedia Britannica 11th ed. Gives details including the name of the insurer and the lottery numbers of each ticket of the insurance of quarter eightth and sixteenth-parts in tickets e.g. 'Novr 25 Paid Mr Hodges elsewhere 'Mr Hodges in Queen St' for insuring the followg 8 Eighth parts B & P for 26th Novr. vizt. 11m386 33m824 . 0/15/0'. Eighteenth-century ballad. Manuscript of untitled poem beginning 'Ere ye. read ys. ye. may suppose. That some new listed Lover. By means of Poetry has chose. His Passion to discover.'
Early eighteenth century. Another later version published in the Gentleman's Magazine London May 1744. 2pp. on both sides of a strip of 35.5 x 11.5 cm laid paper with fleur-de-lys watermark. In a secretary hand employing the thorn and long s. In fair condition on aged and worn paper. An untitled forty-line poem divided into five numbered eight-line stanzas. The narrator is an older married woman advising a younger woman not to marry with observations on the frailties of the male sex. The first stanza reads: 'Ere ye. read ys. ye. may suppose. That some new listed Lover. By means of Poetry has chose. His Passion to discover. Know Faire one I am a Matron Grave Which Time & Care has wasted And would thy Youth from sorrow save Which I have in Wedlock tasted.' A variation of the poem was published in the Gentleman's Magazine May 1744 with the title 'The MATRON's Advice to a YOUNG LADY A new BALLAD. Tune Sally.' The grammar of the Gentleman's Magazine version is more modern in tone its first line reading: 'Ere you read this you may suppose' and the variations are most apparent in the third stanza including 'Beset thy dwelling' in the published version for 'Surround thy Threshold' in the manuscript; 'heedless' for 'regardless'; 'Pass all your minutes' for 'Thy Moments pass on'; 'While flames are offer'd at our shrine And Men like Idols sue us' for 'Darts flames & hoards adorn Our shrine And Awful Hymen woo us.' The writer has begun to write another poem on the reverse of the slip: 'Come lesten sic ye tories & jacobites now Your Plot <.> shew'. Not present in the English Broadside Ballad Archive. Some old folds with occasional minor tearing offsetting and browning - especially to gutter. Short tear to the head of spine of the enclosing wrappers. A rare survival of a choice engraved plan of the annual military review of King James II's troops at Hounslow Heath in July 1686. The Restoration settlement of Charles II provided the King with just a small defensive military; a standing army in name only. This was expanded greatly during the 1660s and 1670s largely as a result of the Anglo-Dutch - and Franco-Dutch - wars. But the accession of his brother James II himself intent on expanding his armed presence in part out of necessity given the threat of rebellion as demonstrated by the efforts of the Duke of Monmouth in 1685 led to significant expansion of the English armed forces. Annual military manoeuvres and reviews were hosted at Hounslow Heath each summer between 1685 and 1688 in order to train this enlarged and increasingly professional force and in no small part to demonstrate the substantial military support that the King - always in a politically precarious position in relation to the Church Parliament and landed gentry despite apparent popularity amongst his subjects - could muster. The English puritan minister and journalist Roger Morrice noted in his diaries that several thousand visited the camp - the early-modern equivalent of the earlier chivalric tournament - represented by this engraving. It is perhaps therefore unsurprising that a number of commercial opportunities from prostitution to printing arose from the impressive and novel gathering. Whilst ESTC locates a single copy Oxford of this plan finely engraved for English print and map-seller's John Seller 1668–1698 and John Oliver OCLC adds a further example at Cambridge and reproductions have supposedly been made from an 'original in the Huntington Library' which we have been unable to locate other editions of the same view are also known. A broadside version of this prospect 'printed for and sold by Richard Palmer' - with letterpress titling and woodcut illustration - was also issued. Successive editions each a revision on the last accommodated advances in military technology such as the introduction of flintlock firing mechanisms and the wide-spread employment of the bayonet. This copy is paired with a reissue of the regulations for the conduct of the infantry occasioned by the onset of the Monmouth Rebellion during which the ranks of the English Army swelled in response to the threat of the deposition of James II. . This is a scarce item that was probably removed from a larger work however the sjubect is the same. Basically these acts focus on the seizure of lands during the English Civil War following the execution of Charles I in 1649 and just before the installation of Oliver Cromwell as Lord Protector in 1653. The text is primarily lists of nobility who remained loyal to the crown and whose lands were forfeited to the commonwealth for "treasons against the parliament and the people of England." Lacking the introductory notes by Edward Heawood. The complete suite of maps: an impressive production. The first map is a general map of England and Ireland by an unknown author 1594; nineteen county maps; and a final sheet of miniature county maps printed as a deck of playing-cards. The county maps proper vary in date from Saxton's “Southamtonia” of 1575 to John Speed's version of Norden's map of Sussex dated 1610. A contemporary reviewer dubbed it " a rich cartographical feast" allowing easy access to rare and valuable maps and comparison of maps by different cartographers for the same county. <br>The county maps reproduced include five by Christopher Saxton three by John Norden Philip Symonson's map of Eastern Kent published in 1596 a series of seven maps dating from the early years of the seventeenth century two maps prepared for Camden and two published by John Speed. . The sole edition of a decidedly uncommon news-book account of the actions of the Army of the Solemn League and Covenant - led by veteran Scottish Army officer Alexander Leslie 1st Earl of Leven c.1580-1661 - in the summer of 1645 reporting most particularly on their taking of a royalist garrison within the moated house at Cannon Froome Herefordshire. Following the defeat of a Royalist rebellion against the Covenanting-led Scottish Government in the Spring of 1645 the Scottish army of the Solemn League and Covenant - named after the 1643 treaty between the reforming parliaments in England and Scotland- led by the Earl of Leven marched south to assist their allies. As this news-book reports a 'party of 4500 Horse Foot and Dragoons' en route to Hereford became aware of a Royalist garrison led by 'Governor Colonell Barnold' in the small Herefordshire village of Castle Froome. After the Royalist commander refused to surrender the moated house which had been reinforced with Irish volunteers after the battle of Newark Leven the 'Lieut. Generall.gave order for storming the place'. The heat of the battle is described thus from a purely Roundhead perspective: 'The Grasses were about nine foot deep and as broad and in most places full of water; The Works above the Grasses were so high that all the Ladders we could get were too short; the Enemy behaved themselves valourously but it pleased the Lord to give our Souldiers to much courage that after a hot dispute they were beate from their works after which they fled to the house where they fought desparately till a great part of them were killed. Graham Carritt on the occasion of his admission to the Livery of the Company in June 1927. With a bookplate of Grocer's Hall to the front pastedown. The Worshipful Company of Grocers is one of the 110 Livery Companies of the City of London and ranks second in order of precedence. Established in 1345 the Grocers comprise one of London's Great Twelve City Livery Companies. The company was founded in the 14th century by members of the Guild of Pepperers which dates from 1180. The Company was responsible for maintaining standards for the purity of spices and for the setting of certain weights and measures. Its members included London's pharmacists who separated forming the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries in 1617. The guild was known as the Company of Grossers from 1373 until 1376 when it was renamed the Company of Grocers of London. In 1428 two years after building its first hall in Old Jewry the Company was granted a Royal Charter by King Henry VI of England. One of the Great Twelve City Livery Companies it ranks second in the Companies order of precedence after the Mercers' Company. It is said that the Grocers' Company used to be first in the order until Queen Elizabeth I as Honorary Master of the Mercers' Company found herself in procession after her coronation behind the Grocers' camel which was emitting unfortunate smells; as a result the Mercers were promoted. Today the Grocers' Company exists as a charitable constitutional and ceremonial institution which plays a significant role in the election of and supporting the Lord Mayor and the Sheriffs of the City of London. The Company's motto is "God Grant Grace". The Company also provides banqueting and conference facilities at Grocers' Hall situated in Prince's Street next to the Bank of England. The earliest known Grocers' Hall was in Poultry London then known as Conningshop-lane on account of the three conies or rabbits hanging over a poulterer's stall in the lane. It was built in 1428 on land once owned by Lord Fitzwalter and let out "for dinners funerals county feasts and weddings." The roof and woodwork of the hall were destroyed in the 1666 Great Fire and afterwards a new roof was erected on the old walls while Sir John Cutler 1st Baronet paid for a new parlour and dining room. The hall was again renovated in 1681 by the future Lord Mayor of London Sir John Moore. A new hall was built on the same site between 1798 and 1802 when part of the garden was sold to the Bank of England for the expansion of nearby Prince's Street. However frequent and extensive repairs were required due to defective foundations in the building which was replaced by a fourth hall completed in 1893 on Prince's Street. The hall survived the Blitz with only minor damage to its north wing but was almost completely destroyed by a fire in 1965 apparently caused by a lightbulb left on in the grand staircase beneath an oak lintel which smouldered and eventually caught fire. A fifth and final hall was constructed nearby in 1970 also on Prince's Street which remains the Grocers' home today. The present Master Grocer for 2018-19 is James Whitmore and the Company's Clerk is Brigadier Greville Bibby. The Company is responsible for the maintenance of Oundle School at Oundle Northamptonshire which uses the Grocers' crest of a camel as its school badge and of the Elms School in Colwall Herefordshire. Reed's School's Annual Foundation Appeal has been held at Grocers Hall for over fifty years. Additionally in 1876 the Company founded the Grocers' Company School in Hackney east of the City of London for the education of "sons of the middle classes". This was transferred into London County Council's control after that authority's formation in 1889 and changed its name to Hackney Downs School; it closed in 1995. The school depicted as its school badge a camel for the Lower School and a shield with cloves and the motto of the Grocers' Company for the Upper School; the Camel and Cloves are remembered to this day by old boys of the school through the Clove Club for former pupils. The Grocers' Company now maintains close links with and is the principal sponsor of Hackney's Mossbourne Academy renowned for its excellent educational standards. The Company is also affiliated to HMS Queen Elizabeth the first of the Royal Navy's new Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carriers and with the Coldstream Guards the British Army's oldest regular regiment. Eglinton Village in County Londonderry Northern Ireland was established by the Grocers' Guild in 1619 under the name of Muff; the local Castle Credit Union adopted the use of the Company's crest as has Eglinton Primary School. Two volumes in contemporary calf elegantly rebacked in light tan calf with dark brown morocco labels raised bands spine compartments gilt. 8 x 7 inches 20.5 x 18 cm; various paginations with 45 and 50 superb engravings respectively including engraved titles the latter count including the ten engraved landscapes largely stipple-engraved plates executed by Taylor and Ogborne mostly after designs by Samuel Shelley and Robert Smirke. Originally issued in parts the work is rarely found complete with all plates. As the publishers state "Gentlemen may bind any numbers together to make a volume and in any order they please" as a consequence of which few copies have the full quota of plates. The Copper Plate Magazine; or Monthly Treasure for the Admirers of the Imitative Arts
London: Printed for G. Kearsly 1778 1778. First edition all published. ESTC P2575; NCBEL II 1305. Head of the spine chipped; edges and hinges a little rubbed; very good sound copy. Folio contemporary brown smooth calf red morocco spine label five raised bands gilt lettering. Engraved title-page and 123 engraved copper plates. A complete run of 42 issues of an illustrated magazine published by George Kearsly between 1774 and 1777 intended to display and celebrate the art of copperplate engraving. Each of the 123 examples is accompanied by a leaf of explanatory text. The subjects include portraits 25 English and 16 French - all men historical events mythology and fables 40 plates including several dedicated to scenes from Telemachus and views of important castles houses and other picturesque structures and places 42 plates including two of Strawberry Hill. At least 12 engravers were involved among them Thomas Cook Thomas Ryder William Sharp William Walker Charles Grignion the Younger John Hall William Watts Valentine Green and Joseph Collyer. The final leaf of text has directions to the binder for the arrangement of the plates which the binder of this volume adhered to perfectly. The Copper Plate Magazine was a perfect candidate for breakers and grangerizers and complete volumes are uncommon today.
