Rosamond Johnson was an African American composer and singer best known for the song "Lift Every Voice and Sing" which he wrote with his brother James Weldon Johnson. Pencil notation inside front cover; text otherwise unmarked by previous owners. The frontispiece is dampstained and all pages are lightly foxed and age-toned. Some occasional light fingerprint smudges as well. The plates have faded slightly onto their facing pages. The binding is tight. Very good condition for an 18th-century book! A book of poems fables and fictional conversations between children and a teacher designed to educate and promote moral virtues. The work is dedicated to Princess Amelia daughter of King George III. Preceeds the 1798 American editions published in New Haven by G. Bunce and in Northampton Mass. by William Butler. Sold as is. The novel first appeared in London in 1687 and long remained in favor having several 18th century British printings. Charlotte Elizabeth Morgan notes in "The Rise of the Novel of Manners' 1911 that ".in the late 18th century a New England publisher passed it off as an original American production." . The summary continues:".the story is the usual one of love contrary to the commands of parents the desertion of the hero and the consequent suicide of the heroine. KING Viva 1893-1979 1920's Bohemian. </b>Small archive relating to the publication of scandalous London hostess Viva King's autobiography <i>The Weeping and The Laughter. </i>London: Macdonald and Jane's 1976 the archive includes Wilson's manuscript book review & more. London 1976. </p><p>King writes the <i>Preface </i>to her autobiography ".Angus Wilson offered to write this book for me. However I decided to try my luck myself.Illness and other interruptions caused delays in finishing this book and but for Angus Wilson's encouragement I might never have come to 'Finis'; and so to him with love and gratitude I dedicate this work." With the archive we include a first edition of the book in dust jacket whose blurb describes Viva King as "for many years one of London's best-loved hostesses" who "now in her eighties Mrs. King looks back on the Bohemian-smart world of the Sitwells Augustus John Ronald Firbank and Norman Douglas." Here is Wilson's 1000-word manuscript review of the book 3 1/2pp. 4to with additions and deletions in which he writes first about reading Proust saying "I have never felt so close to Proust as no when at sixty two I have been honoured by the dedication of Viva King's funny and touching memoirs. "I who as a nervous voluble painfully thin young librarian of twenty-five was entered in her guest book among all the impressive names as 'Man from the British Museum". Viva then was a brilliant eccentric colleague's beautiful witty wife whose erratic headaches threatened verbal annihilation to those whose conversation didn't come up to her husband.she didn't actually annihilate me but I didn't expect to be asked again." Wilson describes her as a "Formidable hostess tough bohemian sharer of jokes often bawdy until we cried woman of discriminating tastes and sensitive feeling for people and places all these I have gradually assembled over the years in Proustian interplay.To all who think of the artistic bohemia and the literary monde of the interwar years as a brittle shell I recommend this book to that they may learn that that glittering world had a heart as well as a sense of fun. Angus Wilson." Viva King was described as shy tough and tender a "British Higher Bohemian Mother Courage" by Maurice Richardson in his review in the <i>Observer </i>2 May 1976. <b>Accompanied by notes for a review</b> by one "Patrick" whom we have not identified 10 pp. of his preparatory manuscript notes for his review on small 6 1/4 x 4 1/4" light blue sheets of paper and the review itself in typescript 2pp. small folio. <b>Accompanied by</b> King's 2pp. 4to ALS on her 15 Thurloe Square London stationary May 20 1976 in which she says "Dear Patrick I thank you so much for your letter & nice review. I know I am apt to denigrate myself to the point where it becomes a bore-all part of my inferiority complex-not really knowing where I belong. I didn't care so much about the dyke's Miss Kay Dick review. It was Charles who got in to such a state & I am grateful for all the trouble he took.I am much in the dumps because this house becomes more of a burden than I can bear. I can't afford to live in it nor leave it-However! Cheer Up.! I hope to see you soon. With love Viva." <b>Accompanied by </b>a manuscript invitation to "Patrick" from the publishers "to celebrate the publication of Viva King's autobiography" at her house at 15 Thurloe Square 28 April. There is a printed letter to the <i>Times</i>by Wilson and six others protesting Kay Dick's review with a typed copy of their collective letter calling it a "fierce personal attack." There are newspaper clippings of reviews of the book one by Margaret Drabble who wonders "While one cannot help wondering what so distinguished an amanuensis as Angus Wilson would have made of this life we can find here much of his raw material: the darling dodoes the extravagant fancy-dress parties of <i>No Laughing Matter</i> the sporting sponging gentlemen of small means who live in studios and boarding houses: they are all here." That's exactly what Wilson's review tells us. <br /></p>

Illustrated with a colour frontispiece and numerous black and white in-text illustrations. 123pp. Contemporary ownership inscription in pencil to the front pastedown: "W M Emery / 4205 Yaguchidai / Yokohama" and the odd contemporary pencil annotation elsewhere. A very good copy the binding square and firm with a little toning to the extremities. The contents with a little toning some faint scattered foxing to the preliminary pages and a few pages with minor corner creases are otherwise in very good order throughout. An uncommon and rather charming illustrated reader designed to teach English to Japanese children comprising 41 "lessons" concerning typically English or American situations scenarios and occupations. Judging by the inscription the present copy was quite possibly owned by an English teacher working in Yokohama during the period.</p><p>WorldCat records only one institution worldwide with holdings of this title National Diet Library Tokyo all of which are later editions third-sixth editions published during the later 1920s and 1930s. STC 19736; ESTC 19736. ◆Spine just faintly sunned leaves lightly browned due to paper quality and trimmed a bit close at head grazing headline on a couple of leaves isolated marginal stains or tiny rust spots but an excellent copy fresh and clean in a sympathetic binding with few signs of wear.<br/> <br/> This was an important work in establishing distinctions in liturgy and doctrine between the Catholic Church and the Church of England written by a moderate puritan whom DNB considers "perhaps the most significant English theologian of his age." Perkins 1558-1602 was one of the most popular voices of his time speaking from a Calvinist puritan point of view; while he could be virulently anti-Catholic he did not believe in repudiating the English church only in reforming it. According to DNB "The genius of Perkins's work did not lie in its originality—his theology represents a conventional recital of Calvinist scholasticism in virtually every respect. His gift lay rather in bringing to a broad audience a variety of theological and moral issues popularizing essentially technical discussions and therefore as Fuller observed humbling 'the towering speculations of philosophers into practice and morality.'" The present work spread his polemical influence beyond England to the Continent; even the Catholic bishop William Bishop admitted he had "not seene any book of like quality published by a Protestant to contain either more matter or delivered in better method." Both the 1597 first edition and our 1598 second printing are rare: no other copies of either edition are recorded at auction by RBH or ABPC in the past 50 years. John Legat unknown

Some old folds with occasional minor tearing offsetting and browning - especially to gutter. Short tear to the head of spine of the enclosing wrappers. A rare survival of a choice engraved plan of the annual military review of King James II's troops at Hounslow Heath in July 1686. The Restoration settlement of Charles II provided the King with just a small defensive military; a standing army in name only. This was expanded greatly during the 1660s and 1670s largely as a result of the Anglo-Dutch - and Franco-Dutch - wars. But the accession of his brother James II himself intent on expanding his armed presence in part out of necessity given the threat of rebellion as demonstrated by the efforts of the Duke of Monmouth in 1685 led to significant expansion of the English armed forces. Annual military manoeuvres and reviews were hosted at Hounslow Heath each summer between 1685 and 1688 in order to train this enlarged and increasingly professional force and in no small part to demonstrate the substantial military support that the King - always in a politically precarious position in relation to the Church Parliament and landed gentry despite apparent popularity amongst his subjects - could muster. The English puritan minister and journalist Roger Morrice noted in his diaries that several thousand visited the camp - the early-modern equivalent of the earlier chivalric tournament - represented by this engraving. It is perhaps therefore unsurprising that a number of commercial opportunities from prostitution to printing arose from the impressive and novel gathering. Whilst ESTC locates a single copy Oxford of this plan finely engraved for English print and map-seller's John Seller 1668–1698 and John Oliver OCLC adds a further example at Cambridge and reproductions have supposedly been made from an 'original in the Huntington Library' which we have been unable to locate other editions of the same view are also known. A broadside version of this prospect 'printed for and sold by Richard Palmer' - with letterpress titling and woodcut illustration - was also issued. Another also in broadside format and with a variant title with an exact date specified An exact prospect of his Majesty's forces as they are encamped on Hounslow Heath 19 July 1686 London 1686 bears the imprint of 'Walter Davis in Amen-Corner' is recorded by ESTC at three location Ashmolean BL and Oxford. <p>Philadelphia: Beck & Lawton 1857. Folio 13 1/2 " X 10 1/4". Original sheet music on 6 pages. Cover art is an original stone lithograph by Philadelphia lithographers Schnabel & Finkeldey. Francis Florentine Hagen 1815-1907 was the Moravian minister who wrote the music for this hymn which traditionally has been performed in Moravian churches on Christmas Eve. Hagen wrote the music sometime between 1836 and 1854 but this 1857 sheet music appears to be the first published edition. Martin Houser's translation from the German poem appears to have been used only in the first edition. Later editions include significantly different lyrics by a different translator. That may help to explain why this sheet music is so SCARCE especially with this lithograph on the cover--WorldCat locates only two copies in libraries. The condition is about very good: the 3 leaves of sheet music are disbound with minimal roughness along the binding edge primarily from the stab Holes and with a one inch closed tear in the top margin of all leaves. A very early English/French bilingual wording of the Canadian National Anthem first performed in French in 1880 as "Chant National" in Quebec City. The French version here uses Judge Routhier's original wording while the English version uses Teschemacher's wording with striking differences between the two. Musical score folio 14 inches tall pp. 2 3-6 7 - blank 8 publisher counts covers in pagination lower cover with the musical short "Boys of the King" 1909 by Bingham and James. Score is toned and lightly soiled with some creases edge wear and a sympathetic white tape reinforcement to spine name in ink at top of front cover. "O Canada !" was officially declared the Canadian National Anthem in 1980 exactly 100 years after it's original composition and first performance in Quebec. When Churchill became Prime Minister in 1940 he was named secretary of state for war and later during the Second World War once more served as foreign secretary. Eden succeeded Churchill as Prime Minister in 1955. In 1956 his failure to respond effectively during the Suez Crisis and the subsequent loss of party and public support would ultimately lead to his resignation from office in 1957. Lightly soiled surface abrasion towards head on the left hand side but not affecting image several small worm holes but again not affecting image or text. Vignette to head showing Penderel holding a billhook in the foreground with the king on a horse in disguise to the background. Penderel's epitaph is recorded towards the bottom of the engraving with an added note that George II had ordered that his monument be 'cleaned up & beautified in the year 1739'. Engraved broadside celebrating the life of Richard Penderel Richard Pendrill of Hobball Grange Shropshire who with his four brothers saved the life of Charles II after the battle of Worcester hiding him from Cromwell's soldiers. After the Restoration both he and his brothers were rewarded with a pension and he was known as 'Trusty Dick' at Court. He died in 1671 while visiting London and his surviving brothers were later granted exemption from prosecutions for recusancy after the 'Popish Plot'.
