First Edition, 4to (260 x 205 mm), [2], 72pp., large paper copy, with an additional portrait of the author engraved by John Collyers, title-page printed in red and black, added engraved title depicting Neptune with trident framed by scenes of the celebrations, large folding engraved plan of the table layout along the quay, one further engraved plate, contemporary crimson morocco-backed boards, original pink printed label on upper cover, spine rubbed and joints cracked. A festival to celebrate the fall of Napoleon I, April 1814. a vivid account of the 'grand festival' in Great Yarmouth was written by Robert Cory, a local businessman and the builder of a suspension bridge across the River Yare which collapsed in 1845 with considerable loss of life. Inclusively was again the order of the day, and on a larger scale than at Cambridge: over 9,000 people were fed at fifty-eight tables stretched along the waterfront. An afternoon of feasting, donkey-racing and a 'pig hunt' culminated in the burning of a vast, symbolic bonfire representing the 'Funeral Pile of the Buonapartean Dynasty'. Despite concerns prompted by the participation of 'the lowest order of society', everything passed off peacefully. Even the weather obliged: the drizzle stopped five minutes before dinner was served.

Curate at Castle Rising, Norfolk (1828?9), and St Nicholas Chapel, King's Lynn (1829?35), he became incumbent of St Matthew's Chapel, Denmark Hill (1835?43). Hankinson spent much of his leisure time in writing for the Seatonian prize at Cambridge for English verse, of which he was nine times the winner between 1831 and 1842. Volume 1 records full details of all known prose novels in English first published in the British Isles from 1770 to 1799, with the second volume continuing on to 1829. Except for some forty titles of which no surviving copy could be found, all the entries are derived from actual examination of the books themselves. A particularly important facet of volume 2 is that information includes a study of the recently discovered Schloss Covey collection of English novels in Germany, the holdings of which, for the years 1796-1834, are more comprehensive than any other library, including the British Library.

HUTH (Henry)
The Huth Library. A Catalogue of the Printed Books, Manuscripts, Autograph Letters, and Engravings, Collected by Henry Huth, with Collations and Bibliographical Descriptions.
5 Vols., 4to (268 x 180 mm), limited to 130, frontis., portrait, a very good ex-library set, later red quarter calf, cloth boards. Huth's collection, which ranked among the finest in England, was rich in incunabula, voyages, Shakespearean and early English literature, and Bibles. He began compiling this catalogue late in life, but finding it too time-consuming, he employed W.C. Hazlitt and F. S. Ellis to do most of the work. "With the assistance of Ellis and Hazlitt, Huth had started printing a magnificent catalogue of his library, with full titles of every item and exact collations, both entirely novel features in a library catalogue. The work was completed in five volumes two years after his death and has remained... a corner-stone of British bibliography." De Ricci, p. 151.

KNOWLES (Sir Charles)
The Conduct of Admiral Knowles on the Late Expedition set in a True Light.
First edition, 8vo, 30pp., woodcut vignette on title, errata slip after title, folding map engraved by T. Jefferys of "La Rade de Basque" and a large folding engraved plate of "Fort de l'Aiguille, Fort Fouras and the Fort in the Island of Aix, and a Prospect of the Land about the Mouth of the River Charante, from Fort de la Aiguille to l'Isle Madame, taken art about 5 Miles distant", disbound pamphlet. Admiral Knowles was second in command with his flag in the "Neptune", under Sir Edward Hawke in the abortive expedition against Rochefort in 1757. Knowles's conduct and the conduct of the military commander, Lieutenant-General Sir John Mordaunt, provoked considerable criticism. Knowles was among those reproached for this failure and responded with a pamphlet, "The Conduct of Admiral Knowles on the Late Expedition Set in a True Light, 1758". This met with scant favour, and a notice of it in the Critical Review was so extreme that the editor, Tobias Smollett, was tried for libel and sentenced to a ?100 fine and three months imprisonment. He was superseded in his command and, though he retained his flag in the "Royal Anne", guardship at Portsmouth, he had no further active service in the English navy. Sabin, 38150; Goldsmith, 9428.
