L4 is a large folding sheet of accounts, the present copy has the usual manuscript corrections to pages 11, 33, 39, 40, 42, 57, 70, 90, 92, 103, 120, 138 & 142 which if not by Pepys himself were likely carried out under his direction, cont. speckled calf, boards rubbed with decorative blind border-rule, calf reback with original label laid-down, re-cornered, some slight edge-browning and light age soiling but still a good copy. First edition of the variant issue with Griffin-Keble imprint. This was the only book written by Pepys to be published in his lifetime, and forms a defence of his administration of the Navy from 1679 until his dismissal from office following the Revolution in 1688. "Upon this he lavished a great deal of thought and care. It represents a side of Pepy's life which is apt to be ignored."?Pforzheimer. Samuel Ayscough (1745?1804) was a librarian and indexer, up until this index volume was published there was no concordance to Shakespeare's plays. "This was a speculation on the part of the publisher, John Stockdale, who paid 200 guineas for the index, which was designed to accompany his two-volume edition of the Dramatic Works. Here the words are arranged alphabetically with the lines in which they occur, then the name of the play, and in five separate columns the act, scene, page, column and line."?Wikipedia. First edition, small 8vo (131 x 81 mm), [24], 112, 117-172pp., (i.e. 168pp., as 113-16 omitted in the pagination), mounted woodcut frontispiece of a male archer, early ownership signature to title partially erased, upper corner of D1 restored with a loss of a few letters which have been added in ms. blank lower corner of M3 repaired, occasional light soiling and staining, marbled endpapers, eighteenth-century green morocco, tooled in gilt, overall a very good copy. Written when he was sixty-six years old, this is probably the last book which Markham wrote, and is one of his scarcest. "The practical instruction which he proceeds to give to the would-be-archer, of the bow and its use, the shooting-glove, the string, the shaft, the steel of the arrow, the feather, and the arrow-head, is reminiscent of Asham and may indeed be derived from his Toxophilus."?Poynter. Only two other copies have appeared at auction over the last 70 years, the Macclesfield copy sold by Sotheby's 14th April 2005 lot 1311 ?6,600 and the Fox Pointe copy sold by Forum Auctions 10th July 2019 lot 104 ?5000. 848pp., cloth, a very good copy. This is the first descriptive bibliography of the works of Eliza Haywood (1693??1756) and her partner, William Hatchett (1701??1749?). The works have been separated and organized using the principles outlined by P N Furbank and W R Owens in The Canonisation of Daniel Defoe. Evidence for and history of attribution is discussed within the headnotes, and biographical information is given wherever possible, along with the title's publishing history. The bibliography contains many fresh attributions, locates 'lost' and difficult to find Haywood titles and lists dozens of unrecognized translations. It also contains a record of every reprint, facsimile, micro-format reproduction and e-text of works by Haywood; as well as a complete description of all the works published by her and those written by William Hatchett. Likewise, there is an account of all the works that have been attributed to Haywood in the last three hundred years. The history, arguments and evidence for each attribution is considered in full, both for those works accepted as part of the Haywood canon and those rejected.
