Tenth Edition but first under this title collecting The Splendid Shilling; Blenheim An Ode in Latin and English and most importantly Cyder-A Poem in Two Books Fourth Edition printed for J. and R. Tonson and S. Draper 1744. Many of Philips's poems including his first the Splendid Shilling which The Tatler commended as "the finest Burlesque Poem in the British Language" were composed in Miltonic blank verse. "Philips's greatest poem the two-book georgic Cyder 1708 begun at Oxford celebrates his native land and in particular Herefordshire with a combination of accurate knowledge of apples and cider making and a 'sketch of our National History.' The botanist Philip Miller told Dr. Johnson that 'there were many books written on the same subject in prose which do not contain so much truth as that poem.' . . . Philips taught Pope who drew on Cyder in Windsor Forest how to use Paradise Lost for un-Miltonic purposes and to suggest that paradise might still be found in England's green and pleasant land." Cadell J. Nichols R. Baldwin W. Goldsmith J. J. 1786. Full Calf. Fine. A new edition of this vastly influential periodical edited by J. Nichols with notes by Nichols and others complete in six volumes. 8vo: 8 l 440; 4 456; 4 412; 4 432; 4 448; 4 504pp with six portrait frontispieces and six full-page copper-engraved plates. Contemporary tan tree-calf calf the flat spines in compartments between gilt rules with red morocco lettering pieces. An extremely attractive set the bindings square and tight with fresh bright pages and plates occasional underlining in pencil. ESTC Citation No. T98535. The Tatler appeared thrice weekly from 12 April 1709 to 2 January 1711 a total of 271 issues as a single folio half-sheet printed in double columns containing between 1000 and 3000 words of text. A collected edition was published in 1710-11 under the title The Lucubrations of Isaac Bickerstaff Esq. Each issue originally was divided into four individual sections dated from different coffeehouses: accounts of manners and morals from White's; literature from Will's; scholarship from the Grecian; and news from St. James's. A further miscellaneous section is dated "from my own Apartment". After six months the paper's division into headings was gradually phased out in favor of single essays written in the voice of Isaac Bickerstaff. The authorship of most Tatler essays remains unknown but according to Aitken The Tatler London 1898 of the 271 numbers Steele wrote 188 Addison 42 and the two jointly 36. Davis Swift's Prose Works lists six numbers 21. 31 67 68 248 and 249 as contributed by Swift or containing letters or "hints furnished by him." "The Tatler seems to have enjoyed almost instant and widespread popularity. . . . with an original circulation of at least 3000. The volume of correspondence within the Tatler may also indicate its popularity. Steele prints more than 200 readers' letters many of which were probably genuine. . . . dated from as far afield as Edinburgh Wales and Cornwall. Many of these letters are from women." Waller's letter are added for the first time and the various prefaces to the earlier editions are reprinted. Finally the information given in the notes is so full and accurate that little has been left to the research or correction of later editions." Wither to Prior Waller's poems were widely read during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. "Dryden who greatly admired Waller and consistently treated him as mentor and precursor claimed that 'the well-placing of words for the sweetness of pronunciation was not known till Mr. Waller introduced it.' . . . When neo-classical canons of correctness fell out of fashion in the nineteenth century Waller's poetic reputation plummeted and it has never fully recovered though . . . renewed interest in court culture and in the intersection of literature and history toward the end of the twentieth century has led to a modest Waller revival." SMOLLETT Tobias George 1721 1771
The history and adventures of an atom. In two volumes First Issue
London: Printed for Robinson and Roberts 1769. First Edition. Full Calf. Fine. First Issue with the erroneous date 1749 on the title page. 12mo: viii227;ii190pp. Half title in Volume II only. Newly bound by Fitterer in period-style speckled calf spine in six compartments divided by raised bands ruled in gilt with green morocco letter piece gilt top edge gilt end papers renewed. A nearly pristine copy the pages very lightly and evenly toned. Rothschild 1923. ESTC Citation No. T55310. Although Adventures of an Atom is generally accepted as by Smollett there is no conclusive proof that he wrote it. "There is no reference to it in his letters or those of his correspondents but it was attributed to him in the London Chronicle 8-11 April 1769. With echoes of the humour of Rabelais it is a rumbustious at times scatological satire on British political life transposed to Japan. The 'atom' is the supposed narrator a witness to the events and somehow able to communicate them to modern listeners. It may be that Smollett sensing that his remaining days were few revived his vituperative energies to target enemies including Pitt Cumberland Mansfield and Wilkes. If his it was a pungent valediction. He took his leave of Hume in an affectionate letter of 31 August 1768 before going into 'a perpetual exile' Letters 136." ODNB A Key to the pseudonyms is given by Thomas Seccombe in the bibliographical introduction to vol. XII of Smollett's Works. Printed for Robinson and Roberts unknown

The Second Edition published in England based upon the extensively corrected enlarged and reconceived Paris edition of 1717. 12mo; 18 xxviii 4 468 12pp with a portrait frontispiece of Fenelon title page in red and black folding map tracing Telemachus's travels throughout the Mediterranean and 24 full-page copper-engraved plates one at the head of each book in reconceiving the work for the Paris edition the author's grandnephew divided the story into 24 books conforming to Homer's "Iliad". End papers lightly spotted but all else generally clean and bright; archival repairs to tears on two leaves no loss of text; joints very skillfully almost invisibly repaired with the binding now sturdy and secure. Collated and complete with the often-suppressed "Ode" and the two leaves of advertisements at the start of the book. ESTC Citation No. T139621. OCLC Number: 504521029. A scarce edition with OCLC locating only one copy in the British Library and ESTC just five others. Fénelon Archbishop of Cambrai and tutor to the seven-year-old Duc de Bourgogne grandson of Louis XIV and second in line to the throne published this didactic novel anonymously in 1699. The slender plot fills out a gap in Homer's Odyssey recounting the educational travels of Telemachus son of Ulysses accompanied by his tutor Mentor the book's true hero. Mentor denounces war luxury and selfishness and proclaims the brotherhood of man. Though set in a far off place and ancient time Télémaque and Mentor's pronouncements was immediately recognized as a satire on the autocratic reign of Louis XIV whose wars and taxes on the peasantry had reduced the country to famine. Predictably Louis banished Fénelon from Versailles confining him to his diocese where he remained with few exceptions for the rest of his life. Nonetheless Télémaque was an immediate best seller both in France and abroad translated into every European language and even Latin verse. It inspired numerous imitations and supplied the plot for Mozart's opera Idomeneo 1781. It was also a favorite of Thomas Jefferson who reread it frequently. adapted from Wikipedia. chez J. Tonson, a l'enseigne de Shakespear dans le Strand; & J. Watts, a son Imprimerie dans Wild-Court pres de Lincolns-Inn-Fie unknown

SOMERVILE William 1675 1742
The chace chase. A poem. By William Somervile Esq
London: Printed for G. Hawkins and sold by T. Cooper at the Globe in Pater-Noster-Row 1735. First Edition. Full Calf. Near Fine. 4to: 121062pp with frontispiece by Scotin after Gravelot of Apollo receiving his lyre and Diana goddess of the hunt. Contemporary full mottled calf spine in six compartments gilt red morocco lettering piece gilt. An excellent wide-margined copy collated and complete expertly recornered joints skillfully reinforced head caps rebuilt. Very minor worming to rear end papers and a few adjacent pages far from any text with most pages bright and fresh. Printed by William Bowyer whose records show 750 copies produced. Provenance: engraved armorial bookplate of John West first Earl De La Warr 1693-1766 to front paste down and on the front fly leaf the engraved bookplate of the dukes of Gloucester with the order of the garter motto 'Honi Soit qui Mal Y Pense' surmounted by a crown. Foxon S562. According to the ODNB Somervile had two major interests writing poetry and the hunting. Both were united in this his major work comprising four books of Miltonic blank verse through which he conveyed the excitement and dangers of the hunt. The poem also traces the history of hunting up to the Norman Conquest and provides all manner of incidental information on kennel design; hare stag and otter hunting; the breeding and training of dogs and dog diseases and bites. It's interesting to speculate on West's association with Somervile who dedicated this his major work to Frederick prince of Wales. In March1736 West was sent to Saxe-Gotha to accompany Princess Augusta to England where she was to become Frederick's consort. Printed for G. Hawkins, and sold by T. Cooper at the Globe in Pater-Noster-Row unknown
