Hinkley 1923. 8vo. 14 vols. 70 plts. <br><br>This handsome and much-sought edition of the King James Bible was printed at the Merrymount Press and limited to 2574 sets: 1000 on wove paper 1000 on laid paper 488 on handmade paper and 86 on Japan paper. This set is #233 printed on handmade paper and contains 70 fine plates usually 5 per volume and mostly photogravures after paintings. The edition was designed for smooth reading and the text is set in ordinary paragraphs without chapter and verse numbers.<br> This work has a complicated and as yet not fully explained printing history. It was probably first printed in 1904 with sheets reissued or reprinted at various times in the subsequent two decades. Even the name of the publisher on the title-page varies; "The Grolier Society" sometimes appears in place of Hinkley.<br> Binding: Publisher's quarter tan pigskin spine leather over deeply grained polished bare wooden boards with bevelled edges on the three outer sides in the style of incunable and 16th-century books. Immediately after her marriage to Robert Knight later Baron Luxborough Henrietta was suspected of having an affair with her London physician and not long after with a young cleric John Dalton tutor in the household of her friend Frances Seymour countess of Hertford. Knight banished her to Barrells Ullenhall a family estate in remote Warwickshire forbidding her to see their children or to visit London and Bath. Isolated Henrietta relied on correspondents to keep in touch with contemporary affairs. She befriended the poets William Shenstone Richard Jago and William Somervile and together they formed the 'Warwickshire coterie.' Much of her correspondence with Shenstone discussed garden design literature decor and architecture. She created a ferme ornée with many rare plants exotic birds and fowl and was slowly accepted into midland society as visitors came to view the gardens at Barrells. ODNB. Printed for J. It emerged as a formal discipline during the eighteenth century. In another age Gay would have stood out as a preeminent satiric writer but his close friendship with the two most penetrating and acerbic satirists ever to have written in English has meant that his gentler more amiable satiric achievement has usually been regarded as of a major but lower order. Encyclopedia Those satirists were of course Jonathan Swift and Alexander Pope who met with Gay and three lesser lights John Arbuthnot Henry St. John and Thomas Parnell in the spring of 1714 as the Scriblerus Club. Gay designed Poems on Several Occasions to include his finest previously published works Rural Sports The Shepherd's Week and Trivia among other poems plus an extensive collection of new ones and published it by subscription in July 1720 to raise the funds to pay off his debts. This highly imaginative Swiftian journey to a fifth underground continent went through some 60 editions was translated into many languages and ranks among the most popular novels of the 18th century. Among utopian works only Gulliver's Travels was more popular. According to Lewis Utopian Literature p. 92 Niels Klim is the first important fictional use of the astronomer Edmond Haley's theory suggested in a paper published by the Royal Society in 1692 that the planets form an arrangement of concentric spheres surrounding the sun with openings at the poles through which access to hidden worlds is possible. Influenced by Rabelais and particularly Cervantes' Don Quixote Butler's mock-heroic poem satirized Roundheads Puritans Presbyterians and other factions of the English Civil War. "Although 'written in the time of the late Wars' Hudibras was not licensed to be printed until 11 November 1662 two years after re-establishment of the monarchy when a satire on Puritanism could no longer give offense to the ruling party. On the contrary the satisfaction which it gave to the King and court had much to do with the great success it achieved." Grolier English Literature 100 32. Samuel Pepys bought a copy and finding no humor in it sold it the same day. Still the book enjoyed enormous popularity and on 5 November 1663 the 'Second Part' appeared. Fourteen years passed before 'Hudibras: the Third and Last Part' dated 1678 was entered in the Stationers' register on 22 August 1677 and put on sale. Multiple editions and pirated editions of the individual parts as well as combined editions were published by 1680. Finally some 65 years later an edition with plates by Hogarth among his earliest attempts at book illustration was published and regular republication of Hudibras as a literary classic continued to the beginning of the twentieth century. According to Bland Hogarth's plates are a "landmark in English illustration and emphasize its divergence from an international style. . . . nothing could be more different from French work of the time . . . Hogarth aims at the common man; where the French illustrator is salacious he is coarse; where the French illustrator chooses a classical or aristocratic subject he prefers a contemporary plebeian one; and he is moral where the Frenchman is amoral."
