This is Elise Boyer Hall (1851-1924), who gained fame as Americas's first female concert saxophonist, pioneer of concert repertory for saxophone, and patroness of the arts. First Edition. An imaginary account of the trial of the future dramatist before Sir Thomas Lucy on a charge of deer-stealing. Various verses are found in Shakespeare's pocket and are read aloud by the magistrate's clerk. None are especially exciting, and Sir Thomas falls asleep. Walter Savage Landor (1775-1864), English poet and essayist, was educated at Oxford. After a quarrel with his father, Landor went to live in Wales, where he wrote the epic poem Gebir (1798). The middle and most productive years of his life were spent in Italy. There he wrote the greater portion of his voluminous prose work, Imaginary Conversations (1824-1853), consisting of nearly 150 dialogues between notables both ancient and modern. Lady Mary Wortley Montagu (1689-1762) English author, noted primarily for these highly descriptive letters. She was the daughter of the first Duke of Kingston. In 1712 she married Edward Wortley Montagu, who became ambassador to Turkey in 1716. On her return to England in 1718 she worked to educate the public in the use of inoculation against smallpox. In 1739 she left her husband and went to live on the Continent. She is also remembered for her quarrel with Pope, who had once been her ardent admirer and who attacked her viciously in his poetry. Horace Walpole disliked her also and depicted her as a greedy, heartless eccentric. However, recent studies have defended her as a brilliant woman struggling for emancipation. Her letters were first published in 1763. Interesting and scarce. W141‎

Volume one with the spine intentionally blackened - most curious. With a cypher (E.H.F.) bookplate printed on the same yellow paper as that used in the bindings. Hardbound. FIRST EDITION. James Henry Leigh Hunt (1784-1859) was a famous English poet, critic, and journalist. He was a friend of the most eminent literary men of his time, and his home was the gathering place for such notable writers as Hazlitt, Lamb, Keats, and Shelley. With his brother John, Hunt established in 1808 the Examiner, a liberal weekly to which he contributed political articles. Because of an outspoken article casting aspersions on the prince regent, the brothers were imprisoned from 1813 to 1815, but they continued to edit the journal from jail. In 1822, Hunt joined Shelley and Byron in Italy and launched the Liberal (1822-23), which proved a failure. During other periods Hunt contributed to the Indicator (1819-21), the Tatler (1830-32), and Leigh Hunt's London Journal (1834-35). A noted dramatic and literary critic, he was one of the first to praise the genius of Shelley and Keats. There is great difference in reading a book at four and twenty and at eighty eight. As often as I have read it and fumbled it over, it now excites fresh admiration that this work has excited so little interest in the literary world. As splendid an edition of it as the art of printing can produce, as well as for the intrinsic merits of the work, as for the proof it brings of the bitter sufferings of the advocates of liberty from that time to this, and to show the slow progress of moral, philosophical, political illumination in the world, ought to now be published in America" - John Adams to Thomas Jefferson 17 September, 1823. Syme from Dr. Mainzer." An influential essay by a German singing master and music teacher who came to England in 1839. Mainzer dedicates his book to the Members of the Educational Institute of Scotland 'because the Institute has, despite the national prejudices, acknowledged music as a branch of public instruction, as an element in the education of youth'. He discusses (in a Scottish context): the Present System of Musical Education; Musical Teaching in Boarding Schools; Vocal Music, its Influence Upon the Health of Children; Infancy the Best Age for Singing; Moral Influence of Music; Music in Infant Schools (and) in Schools for Children, Young Ladies, and Classical Students; Etc. This copy was presented to Dr. James Syme (1799-1870) of Edinburgh. As a student at Edinburgh University he found a way of dissolving rubber which later had many commercial applications. Syme opened a school of Anatomy and later opened a very successful private clinic. In 1833, he became Professor of Surgery in Edinburgh and held that position until his death. Syme is known for introducing conservative alternatives to the major amputations that were common at the time. In 1831, he released a booklet, which detailed cases where joint excision could be used instead of amputation for grossly diseased joints. In 1842, Syme described an amputation at the ankle. This amputation still bears his name, as it replaced a portion of below knee amputations, which were ordinary practice at that time. JUN2C / SE 1/2‎

All edges gilt. Large 8vo. 260 mm. Some damp stain on the light fly leaves and plate tissues, but generally quite clean. Original full green morocco leather binding, handsomely decorated in gold gilt, designed by Albert Henry Warren. Pencil autograph ownership of H. Allen Anderson (who was the author of 'The Chief : Ernest Thompson Seton and the changing West.' Benjamin Fawcett (1808-1893) was one of the finest of English nineteenth century woodblock colour printers. The son of a ship's master, he was apprenticed at age 14 for seven years to William Forth, a Bridlington bookseller and printer. In 1831 he started his own business in Driffield, as music seller, bookbinder and printer, bookseller and stationer. He became a master of hand-coloured wood engraving. The process started with an accurate painting of the subject. (In this case the paintings were by F.A. Lydon, a local youth who served his apprenticeship with Fawcett and stayed with him until 1883). The picture was then carved, with meticulous attention to detail, on a wooden block of pear or boxwood (which he imported, matured, sawed and sliced and surfaced by his own hands). Placed in a printing press the block gave a black-and-white print, which was then hand-coloured with high-grade inks (often by Fawcett's 'clever' wife with his participation and direction). Many of his books were were published by Groombridge, of London. This work is usually found with that imprint. Indeed, we have been unable to locate any other copy anywhere with Bell and Daldy as publishers. The complex binding design is by John Leighton, and was executed by Edmonds & Remnants (with their label). Douglas William Jerrold (1803-1857) was an English dramatist and writer who, from the 1830s to 1850s, was absolutely at the centre of literary London. A friend of Dickens and Thackeray, both pall-bearers at his funeral. Jerrold was an editor, playwright, journalist, novelist and public wit and among the most popular writers in Britain. It was 'Mrs Caudle's Curtain Lectures' that really captured the public's imagination. Serialized in Punch, they were lively studies of female domination in Victorian society. The illustrations here by Charles Kenne (1823-1891), who began to draw for Punch in 1852, are considered a masterpiece in book illustration. Ray. Binding rubbed and worn. Johannes Herr (1781-1850), was the founder of the Reformed Mennonite Church. Around 1800 his father (Francis) was expelled from the Mennonite Church in West Lampeter Township, Lancaster County, PA. Francis began to conduct religious services in his home as a lay brother. He died in 1810, leaving a family of eight children, none of whom had been baptized as members in any church. Among those who associated with him in his lay services were Abraham Landis and David Buckwalter, both of whom had withdrawn from the Mennonite Church. After Francis Herr's death the meetings continued and his son John was asked to lead the services, although he was not yet baptized. In a meeting on 30 May 1812, at John Herr's home John was elected pastor and bishop, and Abraham Landis was elected to baptize him. Herr in turn baptized Landis and Abraham Groff, Groff being elected deacon. Soon thereafter Abraham Landis was chosen preacher, followed by John Groff as preacher. In 1812 the first meetinghouse was dedicated, called Longenecker's. John became a vigorous leader of the new group. He traveled widely, especially to Western New York and Ontario, where congregations of his group were established. Scarce First Edition. PA SHELF 011A‎
