Bottom corner of front panel is discolored-darker otherwise very clean no marks. Light rubbing of spine edges and corners. Tight solid and square sewn binding. Frontispiece: "Mr. Daly Stirs Up the Post-Boy"--a delightful illustration. Title page in green-tones. First three pages are discolored on lower corner otherwise pages are clean no markings no creasing toned. Charles Lever 1806-1872 at the peak of his career was one of the most successful novelists in the English Language with a reputation to rival Charles Dickens. Unlike Dickens Lever's reputation suffered after his death apparently for political reasons and within three decades he had sunk into obscurity. He is sometimes called the Lost Victorian. Lower front corner scuffed; rear upper edge of the spine is scuffed. Publisher's navy stain on top edge. Rough cut. Endpapers illustrated with a Map of London "at the time of Boswell's London Journal locating many of the places mentioned". Prev. owner name and date by the British Museum on the map and clean embossed stamp in lower right corner of ffep. Map on rear ep a continuation of the first; small residue of sticker tag on the rear paste-down. The jacket is clean browning illustrated with a London street with carriage pedestrians perfectly illustrating the fashions of the day--wonderful. The jacket is ragged on the edges and corners with a small piece missing from the upper edge and a larger piece from the top and bottom around the spine. Now has a mylar protective cover. This edition is the Yale Edition of The Private Papers of James Boswell which were found in the 20th century and constitute the most important literary find of the century. The book is in pristine condition with the text in the unusual Plantin type twelve-point size with two points of leading between lines. Image with text measures 18.5" x 11.75".<br/> <br/> From the "English Pilot" a composite sea-chart atlas published in several editions from 1671 to 1803. This map of St. Peters in Newfoundland was part of the fourth book "The West-India Navigation" published by W. & J. Mount & T. Page in 1751. The Mount family was active in publishing in various manifestations for many generations from the 1650s to 1800. On the back of the page is a beautiful print of two Auks along with a description of the birds and their abundance in this area. These birds were eventually hunted into extinction.<br/> <br/> W. & J.
