This annual includes a chronology of events for the year and a biographical who's who in Taiwan. Expanded and revised this edition includes chapters on land and people government the economy society and culture. Taiwan officially the Republic of China ROC is a country in East Asia. Neighboring countries include the People's Republic of China PRC to the northwest Japan to the northeast and the Philippines to the south. The main island of Taiwan has an area of 13826 sq. mi. with mountain ranges dominating the eastern two-thirds and plains in the western third where its highly urbanized population is concentrated. Taipei is the capital as well as the largest metropolitan area of Taiwan. Other major cities include New Taipei Kaohsiung Taichung Tainan and Taoyuan. With 23.57 million inhabitants Taiwan is among the most densely populated countries. Austronesian-speaking ancestors of Taiwanese indigenous peoples settled the island around 6000 years ago. In the 17th century partial Dutch colonization opened the island to mass Han Chinese immigration. After the brief rule of part of southwestern Taiwan by the Kingdom of Tungning the island was annexed in 1683 by the Qing dynasty of China and ceded to the Empire of Japan in 1895. The Republic of China which had overthrown and succeeded the Qing in 1911 took control of Taiwan on behalf of the World War II Allies following the surrender of Japan in 1945. The resumption of the Chinese Civil War resulted in the ROC's loss of mainland China to the Chinese Communist Party and retreat to Taiwan in 1949. Although the ROC government continued to claim to be the legitimate representative of China since 1950 its effective jurisdiction has been limited to Taiwan and numerous smaller islands. In the early 1960s Taiwan entered a period of rapid economic growth and industrialization called the "Taiwan Miracle". In the late 1980s and early 1990s the ROC transitioned from a one-party military dictatorship to a multi-party democracy with a semi-presidential system. Taiwan's export-oriented industrial economy is the 21st-largest in the world by nominal GDP and 20th-largest by PPP measures with major contributions from steel machinery electronics and chemicals manufacturing. Taiwan is a developed country ranking 15th in GDP per capita. It is ranked highly in terms of political and civil liberties education health care and human development. The political status of Taiwan is contentious. The ROC is no longer a member of the UN having been replaced by the PRC in 1971. Taiwan is claimed by the PRC which refuses diplomatic relations with countries that recognize the ROC. Taiwan maintains official diplomatic relations with 14 out of 193 UN member states and the Holy See. Many countries maintain unofficial diplomatic ties with Taiwan through representative offices and institutions that function as de facto embassies and consulates. International organizations in which the PRC participates either refuse to grant membership to Taiwan or allow it to participate only on a non-state basis. Taiwan is a member of the World Trade Organization Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation and Asian Development Bank under various names. Domestically the major political contention is between parties favoring eventual Chinese unification and promoting a Chinese identity contrasted with those aspiring to independence and promoting Taiwanese identity although both sides have moderated their positions to broaden their appeal. The Hunts; A history of the design development and careers of the 86 destroyers of this class built for the Royal and Allied Navies during World War II
Cumbria England: World Ship Society 1987. First Edition Presumed First Printing. Trade paperback. Good. 108 pages. Includes illustrations Dedication and publisher Contents Acknowledgments and Notes and Genesis. Also includes Construction Deployment Analysis of Losses Post War Service Review of the Hunts Ship Histories List of Pendant Numbers Endpiece and Plan of a Type 1 Hunt a large folding illustration of H. M.S. Cattistock at back cover. Cover has some wear and soiling. The Hunt class was a class of escort destroyer of the Royal Navy. The first vessels were ordered early in 1939 and the class saw extensive service in the Second World War particularly on the British east coast and Mediterranean convoys. They were named after British fox hunts. The modern Hunt-class GRP hulled mine countermeasure vessels maintain the Hunt names lineage in the Royal Navy. The Royal Navy had identified the need for two types of destroyer: larger vessels with heavy gun and torpedo armaments for fleet work and another type for escort duties. The escort vessels forsook the heavy armament and some of the speed of the fleet type to reduce unit cost and better suit mass production and the conditions. This fast escort vessel" was later classified as an "escort destroyer". Eighty-six Hunts were completed of which 72 were commissioned into the Royal Navy and the remaining 14 were transferred to allied navies; Bolebrooke Border Catterick Hatherleigh Modbury Bramham and Hursley to the Greek Royal Hellenic Navy Bedale Oakley and Silverton to the Free Polish Navy Glaisdale Eskdale and Badsworth to the Royal Norwegian Navy and Haldon to the Free French Navy. The Hunts were modeled on the 1938 escort sloop Bittern a 262-foot 80 m ship of 1190 tons with 3300 shp 2500 kW on geared turbines for 18¾ knots and an armament of three twin Mark XIX mounts for the QF 4-inch 102 mm gun Mark XVI. The guns were controlled by a Fuze Keeping Clock AA fire control computer when engaging aircraft. The Hunt class was to ship the same armament plus a quadruple QF 2 pounder mount Mark VII on a hull of the same length but with 8 feet 2 m less beam and installed power raised to 19000 shp 14000 kW to give 27 knots 50 km/h. The first twenty were ordered in March and April 1939. They were constructed to Admiralty standards as were contemporary destroyers unlike the frigates which conformed much more to mercantile practice. Clearly the Hunts posed a major design challenge. They would be too short and narrow and of insufficient range for open ocean work being restricted to the North Sea and Mediterranean Sea. This sacrifice was accepted to give any chance of meeting the requirements. The demanding specifications in an overworked Admiralty design department resulted in a major design miscalculation. When the detailed calculations were done the center of gravity was lower than expected and the beam was increased. As the first ships were being completed it was found that the design was as much as 70 tons overweight top heavy leaving them dangerously deficient in stability. The first twenty ships were so far advanced in construction that it was necessary to remove the 'X' 4-inch gun mount and add 50 tons of permanent ballast. These ships became the Type I group and had the multiple 2-pounder gun relocated from behind the funnel to the more advantageous 'X' position. The design deficiency of the Type I was rectified by splitting the hulls lengthwise and adding a 2½ foot section increasing the beam to 31 ft 6 in and the margin of stability sufficiently for the designed armament to be shipped. These ships became the Type II group and also had a revised design of bridge with the compass platform extending forwards to the wheelhouse face. Under the 1939 Emergency War Program 36 more Hunts had been ordered; three of these were completed to the original Type I design. Depth charge stowage could also be increased from 40 in the Type I to 110. For the 1940 building program torpedoes were deemed necessary. The next 27 ships were completed to a revised design the Type III group and were intended specifically for Mediterranean work. They sacrificed 'Y' gun for a pair of 21-inch torpedo tubes amidships the searchlight being displaced to the aft shelter deck as a result. The Type III Hunts could be easily identified as they had a straight funnel with a sloping top and the foremast had no rake. Fourteen of them had their stabilizer fins removed or not fitted in the first place and the space used for extra fuel oil. The last two Hunts came from an independent lineage and were built to a private design that had been prepared pre-war by John I. Thornycroft & Company. Submitted to the Admiralty and rejected in 1938 a modified design had been accepted in 1940. They were known as the Type IV. They had a novel hull design with a U-shaped forward section with a distinctive double knuckle and a full center section with a square turn at the bilge. This form was intended to increase low-speed efficiency and reduce rolling without the need for ballast or stabilizers to improve the ships as gun platforms; testing showed an 8% increase in steaming efficiency at 20 knots 37 km/h for a 2% loss full ahead. Other features included a long fo'c'sle stretching for most of the length of the ship which increased internal accommodation space the lack of which was a perennial problem in wartime ships with enlarged crews and allowed the crew to fight the ship almost completely under cover. As a result 'X' gun was now at the fo'c'sle deck level rather than on a raised shelter deck. The design was large enough to carry a triple set of torpedoes but as they too were at fo'c'sle deck level the training apparatus had to be remotely mounted a deck below. Armament was completed by a pair of single 20 mm Oerlikon guns in the bridge wings and a pair of power operated twin 0.5-inch Vickers machine guns amidships quickly discovered to be ineffective and replaced by the Mark V twin mounting for the Oerlikon gun. The level of protection afforded to the crews in these two ships was found to be beneficial in wartime where crews were often closed up at action stations for extended periods of time in appalling weather conditions and the design - although it was something of a dead end - heavily influenced post-war escort designs. All Hunt class except three Type II and the Type IV Brissenden had fin stabilizers forward to reduce rolling to make for a steadier gun platform. These were subsequently removed from the majority of the Type III ships to allow for an increase in bunkerage of 63 tons. World Ship Society paperback

Trains; The Magazine of Railroading Volume 48 Number 12 October 1988
Milwaukee WI: Kalmbach Publishing Co 1988. Presumed First Edition First printing. Wraps. Good. 82 2 pages including covers. Illustrations some color. Map. Cover has some wear and soiling. Founded in 1940 Trains Magazine celebrated its 79th anniversary in 2019. This issue includes an article on "Missiles on Rails" by Michael R. Boldrick about the Peacekeeper Rail Garrison pages 36-40. The author was a retired Air Force colonel and had been a test director during development of the silo-based MX missile. He also served as a Minuteman combat crew commander. He later worked for the Stanford Research Institute. Other articles in this issue include Reflections from the Judd Road Bridge that in part described when the renowned French actress Sarah Bernhardt digressed from the established schedule of her first triumphal American tour to present a private performance in Ann Arbor on Christmas Eve 1880 The retirement of the Cadiz Beech Grove Amtrak's largest shop and moving grain on the Rock Island. The Peacekeeper Rail Garrison is a mobile missile system that was developed by the United States Air Force during the 1980s as part of a plan to place fifty MGM-118A Peacekeeper intercontinental ballistic missiles on the rail network of the United States. The railcars were intended in case of increased threat of nuclear war to be deployed onto the nation's rail network to avoid being destroyed by a first strike counterforce attack by the Soviet Union. However the plan was canceled as part of defense cutbacks following the end of the Cold War and the Peacekeeper missiles were installed in silo launchers as LGM-118s instead. Train-based ICBMs do offer some advantages over missiles in fixed silos namely that the enemy can never be sure where they are or more accurately where all of them are at any given moment. Maintaining a missile on a train is more difficult than in a silo while rail lines and roads can be blocked by snow which tends to restrict railroad ICBMs to warmer climates. Salinger Pierre and Silbert Reine Traduit de l'americain Translated from English by
de memoire
Paris: Editions Donoel 1995. Presumed First Edition First printing thus. Trade paperback. Very good. 442 6 pages. In French. Inscribed on title page by author. Cover has slight wear and soiling. Pierre Emil George Salinger June 14 1925 - October 16 2004 was an American politician author and journalist. He served as the White House Press Secretary to U.S. Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson. Salinger served as a United States Senator in 1964 and was campaign manager for the 1968 Robert F. Kennedy presidential campaign. He later became known for his work as an ABC News correspondent particularly for his coverage of the Iran Hostage Crisis; the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie Scotland; and his claims of a missile being the cause of the explosion of TWA flight 800. Salinger worked on Kennedy's presidential campaign in 1960 and became one of the leading figures in the campaign. He was at times described as being part of Kennedy's Kitchen Cabinet of unofficial advisers. In 1961 after JFK became President he hired Salinger as his press secretary. When Kennedy became the first president to allow live television broadcasts of his news conferences Salinger was said to have managed the press corps with "wit enthusiasm and considerable disdain for detail"3 which made him a "celebrity in his own right." He accompanied Kennedy to conferences with other world leaders including the 1961 meeting with Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev in Vienna. When an aid to Khrushchev invited Salinger to Moscow the president assented to his going. Kennedy however had to explain to the press corps why he was sending a young and inexperienced Salinger to the Soviet Union. Pierre Salinger was only 35 when he became Pres. John F. Kennedy s press secretary. During those amazing years he found himself at the center of many world events. After leaving the White House in 1964 Salinger was briefly a senator from California & even more briefly a movie & TV actor. Following the assassination of Bobby Kennedy which he witnessed Salinger retired from politics & moved to his mother s native France. In 1978 he went to work for ABC television soon becoming their Paris bureau chief & over the ensuing decades he covered every major story. Derived from a Kirkus review: The autobiography of a newsman and presidential press secretary; Salinger's memoirs include several confessions of monumental ego. Salinger usually plays the hero. The memoir is filled with real-life stories about historic events of the past half-century. Salinger was really there. He joined Robert Kennedy's team investigating the Teamsters in the 1950s served as presidential press secretary to John F. Kennedy and briefly Lyndon Johnson and was among the close friends who convinced Robert Kennedy to run for president in 1968. Shattered by RFK's assassination Salinger fled the US for France where the onetime journalist eventually became Paris bureau chief for ABC news. He claims coups in investigating such stories as the hostage crisis in Iran the terrorist bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 and the Persian Gulf War before finally coming back to the States in 1993. The most fascinating stories come from Salinger's days working on the Kennedy campaigns and in the Kennedy White House. Especially riveting are accounts of private conversations with Russian premier Nikita Khrushchev and of his participation in back-channel contacts between Russia and the US. A fascinating insider's view of historic events of the past 50 years especially those involving John and Robert Kennedy. Editions Donoel paperback

Rahmonov, Emomali, and Petrik, Karina (Translator), and Wilson, Tom (English Editor)
The Tajiks in the Mirror of History; Volume One From the Aryans to the Samanids
Guernsey Great Britian United Kingdom: London River Editions Limited 2001. Presumed first edition/first printing thus. Hardcover. Near fine. Text is in English and Farsi. 114 pages in English approximately the same number in Farsi. Color illustrations. Footnotes some appear to be in Russian. Volume One only. There is a second volume with a slightly different title with a different translator different place of publication.--offered separately. Tajik is a general designation for a wide range of Persian-speaking people of Iranian origin with traditional homelands in present-day Tajikistan Afghanistan and Uzbekistan. As a self-designation the term Tajik which earlier on had been more or less pejorative has become acceptable only during the last several decades particularly as a result of Soviet administration in Central Asia. The Samanid Empire also known as the Samanid dynasty. The Samanid state was founded by four brothers; Nuh Ahmad Yahya and Ilyas-each of them ruled their own territory under Abbasid suzerainty. In 892 Isma'il ibn Ahmad 892-907 united the Samanid state under one ruler thus effectively putting an end to the feudal system used by the Samanids. It was also under him that the Samanids became independent of Abbasid authority. Emomali Rahmon born 5 October 1952 is a Tajik politician who has served as President of Tajikistan or its equivalent post since 1992. During the early years of his presidency Rahmon faced a civil war in which up to 100000 people died. In 2013 he was elected to a fourth term in office. In March 2007 Rahmonov changed his surname to Rahmon getting rid of the Russian-style "-ov" ending. Rahmon explained that he had done so out of respect for his cultural heritage. Following the move scores of governments officials members of parliament and civil servants around the country removed Russian-style patronymics and "-ov" endings from their surnames. Rahmon is a Sunni Muslim and he has frequently stressed his Muslim background even though his administration is engaged in a relentless campaign against public displays of Islamic devotion. During a 2010 Organisation of the Islamic Conference session hosted in Dushanbe Rahmon spoke against what he deemed was the misuse of Islam toward political ends claiming that "Terrorism terrorists have no nation no country no religion . Using the name 'Islamic terrorism' only discredits Islam and dishonors the pure and harmless religion of Islam." London River Editions Limited hardcover

Lynch, John, edited with English translation and notes by Matthew Kelly
Cambrensis Eversus Seu Potius Historica Fides in Rebus Hibernicis Giraldo Cambrensi Abrogata
Dublin: Celtic Society 1850. Presumed first thus. Hardcover. good. 791 pages footnotes appendix index marbled endpapers half-leather binding edges worn slight foxing on a few pages. Volumes 2 ONLY of the three-volume set. Text is in English. Subtitled: In quo plerasque justi historici dotes desiderari plerosque naevos inesse ostendit Gratianus Lucius Hibernus qui etiam aliquot res memorabiles Hibernicas veteris et vovae memoriae passim e re nata huic operi inseruit. Cambrensis Eversus has been generally esteemed one of the most valuable works on the history of Ireland. Viewed merely as a refutation of Giraldus de Barry it was on some points unsuccessful but its comprehensive plan embracing a great variety of well-digested and accurate information on every period of Irish history makes it a valuable work. Lynch defends the cessation of 1643 the peace of 1646 and 1648 condemns the nuncio and approves the general policy of Ormonde. This volume contain the bookplate of Peter Lanyon-Orgill 1924-2002 a bizarre linguistic charlatan who was responsible for a rather large body of work that he apparently purloined from legitimate linguists over his lengthy career.
