The Gallery of Miracles and Madness: Insanity Modernism and Hitler's War on Art
New York: Random House 2021. Cloth 304 pages 16 pages of plates illustrations some colour; 24 cm. Tight clean copy. Stated First U.S. Edition. Dust jacket protected in a mylar cover. A fine copy of the first printing. "This is a tragedy that begins in the halls of psychiatry and modern art and ends in the Nazis' first gas chambers. In the early 1920s Hans Prinzhorn a psychiatrist and aesthete sought insight from the art of mental patients such as Franz Buhler. Buhler was a brilliant well-known ironworker until his schizophrenia diagnosis and his work was compared to that of Munch and Duhrer. Prinzhorn collected and published their work inspiring the Modernist movement that was coming into fashion just as a young Adolf Hitler arrived in Vienna to begin his brief failed career as a painter. Hitler was alienated by the Modernists and what he called their 'degenerate' art that expressed the most primal human emotions. He saw it as a disease in the body politic and set out to crush it with the infamous "Degenerate Art" exhibition Goebbels and Hitler engineered in 1938 that mocked the work of mental patients and Modernists. The cultural cleansing was a precursor to the racial cleansing and Prinzhorns's patient artists would be caught up in both. Hitler developed the first gas chambers as a way to dispose of 70273 patients including Franz Buhler. In The Gallery of Miracles and Madness the Nazis' cultural destruction which would rightly be considered among the lesser sins of the Reich puts the horror of the Holocaust into relief. The cultural decimation--the burning of books and artwork--was a stepping stone to the more overt horrors of the Holocaust. By equating artistic expression with sickness Hitler made the case to the German people that they could not be made whole until those spreading this sickness were destroyed. Showing us the way Hitler's most profound personal insecurities fan the flames of nationalism and unfolding the transition from Weimar life to Nazi life from less familiar points of view--the ward of a psychiatric hospital the contents of a museum--English poses profound questions about what is really at stake in cultural objects and offers us a fresh look at the brutality of the Nazi regime" - Publisher. 1st. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. 8vo. Collectible. Random House Hardcover

John William Mellor (1835-1911), English barrister, both Recorder of Grantham and Liberal Member of Parliament for that place [S
John William Mellor Recorder of Grantham. Autograph Letter Signed 'Jno. Mellor' to fellow-barrister Samuel Danks Waddy regarding a 'Slave circular' 'a new opportunity for Grantham' the Cust family and the North-Eastern Circuit.
On letterhead of 16 Sussex Square Hyde Park W. London 4 February 1876. 4pp. 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition lightly worn and aged with minor trace of mount on second leaf. Waddy's letter 'fortifies' his own opinions and he would 'certainly not neglect a new opportunity for Grantham which is manifestly attended with real uncertainty owing to the local influence of the Custs'. He feels that rather than being 'given up' Grantham should be 'seriously attended to'. He next endorses the North-Eastern circuit: 'each place is good! - There will be always more causes at Leeds than at al the Mid circuit places including additions & as long as there is a strong Bar business will come there - on the Midland the tendency will be to London & looking to the future I am all for NE Circuit. or all for London & Westminster'. Changing the subject he writes: 'Slave circular requires care in dealing with it In point of abstract law I may be right it was foolish to bring the captains duty to a fast line. Hitherto it has always worked in favour of the Slave - He has always some how escaped & the Captain has always contrived so to manage that he should - Complaints may have arisen but what if sic that compared with the fact of escape somehow!' Waddy 'may have to speak' and should turn over 'the above hint' in his mind.' He is well but his brothers 'have ordered me not to come out'. Note: a response to the "Slave Circular" fugitive slaves discussed in Parliament in this year. On letterhead of 16 Sussex Square, Hyde Park, W. [London] 4 February 1876. unknown

Regarding the manuscript of Malcolm's book 'Time and Again' he writes: 'I think you deserve better than Robert Hale publisher although their list may have improved since I stopped receiving their dreadful SF novels for review in my local paper.' I am painting a Girl carrying a Basket of Puppies the anxious Mother following it is on a large scale for Water Colour and I have nothing sufficiently real to work upon.' He adds: 'I dwell still <wi>th grateful recollection on <o>ne or two Cottage Interiors you lent me many years ago'. He had wished that Faed had 'made some use of me in return in the Horse or Dog or Animal line'. Beneath the sketch Tayler writes: 'This is my design.
