Henry Pelham Alexander Pelham Clinton 6th Duke of Newcastle under Lyne 18341879 English nobleman:
Duke of Newcastle; horse-racing Autograph Letter Signed "Newcastle" to "Frank" about a race-meeting.
No place 7 Dec. 1878. Three pages 8vo bifolium small stain otherwise good condition. He comments initially on a cutting from a newspaper. Singular to relate there is more truth in that cutting than you wd imagine. Before leaving London I had persuaded Miss Kellogg to come to Brighton for the race week: I got a letter from her to say . I had a very bad Goodwood & lost heavily the first day at Brighton and wrote in the evening begging her top come as I could npot win a bet and she might change my luck: the second day was as bad as the first but she came down to Brighton that evening for the Cup Day: Speculum won the Cup I landed between 5 and 6000 and gave her a bracelet to commemorate his victory = If I remeber right I did win very nearly 10000 that day but it did little more than clear one over Goodwood and the first two days. Excuse a scrawl ."Note: His taste for gambling resulted in his fleeing the country in 1860 to escape his debts which had then reached £230000. In 1861 he married Henrietta Hope heiress of the wealthy Henry Thomas Hope in Paris. As part of the marriage settlement his debts were paid and an income of £50000 a year settled on the couple. Extensive lands in England and Ireland were also added to his family's holdings by inheritance from his father-in-law although Pelham-Clinton himself never controlled them due to the terms of that testament." Both items in fair condition on lightly-aged paper. ONE: 3pp. 12mo. Bifolium. The letter begins: 'Dear Mr Lane Conscientious research in Titmarshian activities seems to point to the fact that you owe to the club the sum of 22/- for two dinners in October 1907.' He continues on this theme for a while before turning to Reynolds: 'I am very glad to hear that you are going to bring out the Holy Mountain & Poor Mans House by Reynolds. As partly responsible for the <nucleus> suggestion of the Mountain & the location at Acton I take some interest in the book & also in its author. A good many others do the same & I think it should attract enough preliminary notice to attract some public attention to a kind of satire rather vitriolic which a large populace may conceivably fasten on with voracity.' He regards the book as 'somewhat experimental' the 'Poor Man's House' having 'more solid & artistic qualities. I cannot help thinking that there are possibilities of literary achievement quite out of the common in S. R.' The final paragraph describes a book he has acquired. TWO: 2pp. 12mo. Bifolium. He thanks him for sending 'A Poor Man's House' of which he has 'written glowingly in my two little causeries one in The Reader's Review the other in the Country House'. He asks him to 'repeat the experiment' by sending another book before commenting: 'Reynolds far exceeds my anticipation & I am proud with a certain reflected glory in having contributed before any one else to his being Deterré as Pope said of Dr. Johnson. I hope your sporting support of him will be justified & I certainly think it will.' Reynolds' entry in the Oxford DNB notes Seccombe's influence on him. I was pleased to get them.' As Lavers-Smith knows 'a great deal more' about the subject he will be pleased to hear whether he has 'seen any old prints of the house. The Hereford people are firmly convinced that Nell was born in their city. They have put up a tablet in the wall behind which the house stood & they have turned the name of the street from Water Lane into Gwynne Street.'
