‎Dorothy Black (Delius) (1899-1985), English romantic novelist, travel and short-story writer [Ladies' Home Journal; Eimar O'Duff‎

‎Dorothy Black Delius romantic novelist Typed Letter Signed 'Dorothy Black' to Kathleen Cruise O'Brien O'Duffy the wife of the Irish writer Eimar O'Duffy.‎

‎26 June 1925; La Chaumiere Shillong Assam. 4to: 3 pp. Text clear and entire on creased chipped airmail paper. A chatty vivacious and entertaining letter casting light on the state of mind of an English colonial wife. Thanks her for her 'kind remarks about my stories. May I say in return that I also like your story very much and it appears to have what all the Editors are clamouring for all the time - a happy ending!' Congratulates O'Duffy on her marriage 'You say they told you that you were mad to get married and without a certain amount of madness I do not see how any of us would ever take that awful step!' But you were not half as mad as people who marry for money or position or a shooting in Scotland or a motor car or a diamond tiara'. The Blacks 'live as a rule in Rangoon Burma a very hot place indeed where beads of honest sweat decorate every brow all the time.' Finds 'the opportunity of giving a description of herself a rare and glorious one!' Gives a physical description she has 'the slightly wilted appearance of all women who have to live in the Tropics for any length of time' and describes her career as a journalist before marriage. 'I used to look down from the tops of busses into motor cars where the Really Wealthy sat and think how nice life must be from the back seat of a Rolls. And when last I was in England I sat in the back seat of a Sunbeam and looked up onto the top of the passing busses and thought what fun life could be on 2d all the way. If you are still fairly poor remember that. I am not sure one does not get a great deal more pleasure on 2/6d saved up than on trips to Paris when expense is no object. I have tried both and this is my candid opinion.' Explains how 'the only story I ever more or less lived is Marcia's'. 'For last summer I had been working very hard and one day I put a suit case into the back of my two seater Standard and threw my children to the Nurse and went off into the blue.' She has no photograph to send 'I have as I already said one of those Noses.' but says that there is a photograph of her in the June number of the Ladies' Home Journal. As for her age her seven-year-old son says she is twenty-one 'or at the very most . she may be twenty-two'. 'Shall we leave it at that It is so much kinder.' Wishes she could visit O'Duffy at Daffodil Cottage. 'Here we are perched so to speak upon the kettle lid of the world.' Mentions earthquake jungle jackals. 'And it rains rains rains and the newspapers say "The Monsoon is progressing satisfactorily in Assam."' Short autograph postscript. 26 June 1925; La Chaumiere, Shillong, Assam. unknown‎

‎H. N. Brailsford Autograph Letter Signed 'H. N. B.' to 'My Dear N. M.'‎

‎'Friday'; date and place not stated circa 1919. 12mo 4 pp. Good. A long interesting gossipy letter. He is a 'poor weak devil' whose 'confounded laziness' has prevented him from writing. He has 'been to Thomlinson' and all copies of 'No. 14' are sold out 'so there's a feather in your cap my man'. Mention of 'Charteris' 'Ball & Boyd Scott'. 'I'm damned if I know where my lecture notes are - I've just hunted all over my room. I think they must be in Newcastle or is it not possible that I lent them to you' Discusses his 'articles in the Record'. 'Dan' has asked him 'for four articles on my own experiences in the war the first to be down at the Office by 12 prompt'. He has 'had Bone James Bone 1872-1962 a fellow-journalist with Brailsford at the Manchester Guardian & then Menzies in' but nevertheless 'managed it to the minute but ye gods I was sick when I saw it in print. Yesterday's was better for I was studiedly simple - even Menzies liked it.' The third is 'darn smart & offensive'. 'Bone James Bone's brother Sir Muirhead Bone is forging ahead gloriously. I have been to see him in his studio. He has just finished a magnum opus - a sea piece by twilight. I sat & worshipped.' 'Charteris Archibald Hamilton Charteris 1874-1940 later Professor of International Law at Sydney University is to all appearances very brave & cheerful. He talks just as usual with all the old wit & lightheartedness. But he looks ill & pasty & unwholesome. he's going down to London next week to negociate about an appointment in Egypt. Menzies is superb - grave & sane & tolerant. I can hardly understand what has happened. He can see the other side of every question now - is twice as sane & just as able as ever. I have seen a lot of him - we are quite good friends again.' Recounts 'two good MZisms'. 'Dick is flourishing - yellow waist-coat black coat blue tie striped flannel trousers straw hat. Hhe is going to London next spring. He has 3 introductions to men on the Times. He expects to be made dramatic critic & superintendt of the literary department.' He is 'trying to brace himself up' to write a novel and is pleased 'with the little that I have written'. Reference to 'Mrs Adamson' who says she is 'desolate' with 'Robert' away: 'She thinks Mr. Scott a very interesting fellow. She also would have gone to Greece if she had been a man. Many people would.' 'Friday'; date and place not stated [circa 1919?]. unknown‎

‎'Eric Broad' (Frederic E. Wright), English poet [W. Kineton Parkes; John Ruskin; William Marwick; the Ruskin Reading Guild]:‎

‎'Eric Broad' Frederic E. Wright poet Three Autograph Letters Signed two 'Eric Broad/Frederic E Wright.' and one 'Frederic E Wright/Eric Broad.' to W. Kineton Parkes assistant editor of the journal of the Ruskin Reading Guild 'Igdrasil'‎

‎20 and 22 January and 3 March 1890; all from Scarsdale Great Malvern. All three items in very good condition. Interesting series of letters by an obscure 1890s poet. Letter One 12mo 7 pp: Although he realises that some are 'rather poor' he is sending through his brother possibly the artist Alan Wright 1864-1959 'all the lyrics I have by me': 'I have not had time to "weed" yet being veryy busily engaged writing lyrics for a Comedy-Opera 'Ethelinda or a Philanthropic Fad' 1890 on which he collaborated with Hamilton O. Wylde - & a libretto for Operetta; also been trying my hand at very sensational prose'. He has 'quite forgotten' the poem 'Yesterday': 'There is a lyric in the brown-paper-covered book "But Yesterday" - but I do not know if that is the one.' He will 'submit a Sonnet or something to "Igdrasil" shortly'. He misses 'Comus' a magazine edited by Parkes 1888-9: 'as there was always something to attract one in it - more than can be said for most mushroom-papers do forgive the epithet - it was not intended of this era'. He has been 'rather shakey' 'suffering with nicotine poisoning of the lower lip'. He is sending Parkes the 'last collection of my verses' entitled 'In Idle Hours' no copy on COPAC. 'It is coverless - Pardon that - I trust the inside will gain your favour. It is out of print - & only 12 copies were printed. Three on rough-edged paper - others as this one. It is I regret one of the follies of a year past. Cavil not therefore O Critic - but pity the poor deluded youth!' Letter Two 12mo 1 p: Parkes's 'friend may like to see the enclosed lyrics not present - which I have just written.' Letter Three 12mo 4 pp: Apologises for asking for the return of his lyrics 'safe to hand to night'. 'The Composer I sent to however was hard to please: in fact I was unable to do business with him'. He has a 'little collection of Sonnets . in the press' nothing on COPAC under either Broad or Wright. Wonders whether Parkes will 'put the Sonnet "Igdrasil" in the magazine of that name'. 'I suppose "Comus" will appear again "pro bono publico" - I have been writing short stories lately for which I seem to have a slight gift.' In fact my first was well received by a large firm & I am awaiting further hearing from them.' Hopes he may send 'anything in the poetry-line for insertion in "Igdrasil" as I shall submit nothing but what is worthy of my best attempts'. In a postscript reports that the libretto on which he has been collaborating see above is 'now musically complete' and 'on the eve of printing prior to copyrighting. It is of novel & original plot & action.' 20 and 22 January and 3 March 1890; all from Scarsdale, Great Malvern. unknown‎

‎John Phillips (1926-2017), flaneur and literary executor of Violet Trefusis (1894-1972; nee Keppel), English socialite and autho‎

‎Rudolf Nureyev: personal reminiscences of John Phillips. Privately printed collection of 'Nureyev Notes August 1966' regarding 'Sleeping Beauty' at La Scala Milan. Inscribed by Phillips to Barbara Reed.‎

‎Privately printed. Phuket Thailand; 2009. Inscription of February 2011. After a twelve-year 'amitié amoureuse' with Phillips Violet Trefusis died in 1972 appointing him her literary executor and leaving him her last home La Tour de Saint Loup. The present item – only one other copy of which has been traced – is from a collection of Phillips's papers amassed by his friend Barbara Reed containing pamphlets privately printed by him between 2009 and 2014. Phillips's obituary in the Daily Telegraph 'John Phillips globetrotting flâneur and literary executor of Violet Trefusis' 24 March 2017 places the item in context by describing how at the end of his life 'economics caught up with Phillips. He sold Violet Trefusis’s house papers and chattels. He moved to Thailand after spells in Italy and Switzerland settling in Phuket from where he tried with relentless persistence to persuade friends and casual acquaintances to seek publishing outlets for his memories of once famous figures or to purchase valueless copyrights despite having sent his own papers to the Lilly Library at Indiana University in 2004 and 2013 . His friends sighed at the deluge of attachments which arrived by email along with desperate pleas for financial assistance.' According to the obituary 'In August 1966 Phillips caught the eye of Rudolph Nureyev who invited him to accompany him to La Scala. The dancer hoped Phillips would write about his art but he was more absorbed by his private life since Nureyev chose to “slip away and seek his adventures in the rough and dangerous pastures of Milan†at a time when there were genuine threats that he might be kidnapped by furious Communists.' 11pp 12mo. Very much a home made item: printed on six leaves of thick paper and perfect bound in transparent plastic covers with spine of blue tape. The title-page is headed '1 NUREYEV NOTES AUGUST 1966' over a reproduction of a signed photograph of Nureyev and there is a black and white photograph at the end. Inscribed by Phillips at the foot of p.10: 'for dear Barbara from John Feb 2011'. Gossippy undigested notes such as: 'R.N. to me: “What do you do†“I write occasionally about something or someone who interests meâ€. R.N.: “What interests you†“You!†R.N. “Next week I go to the Scala to rehearse Sleeping Beauty. Come with me.†“Yesâ€.' and 'Fantastic the speed of changes in facial expression and mood: delirious joy then sudden eruption of violent annoyance dreamy daze “back to earth†expression playfulness the contagious laughing smile.' and 'R. burning intensity Tartar wildness says that he is not Russian but Tartar very different. Reads “TIME†during rest-break likens style to computer.' and 'Said Lorca: “You know most of my friends in the ballet are “gayâ€. Also my father but I'm NOT! Rudy knows this but last night he took me to bars and he gave me so much drink and tried so hard.â€.' The only extended section on 'DRESS REHEARSAL: about 500 present. R. Increasingly nervous.' followed by '22nd September' concluding: 'I look back to these weeks at La Scala with wonder. Since I only knew Nureyev during this period I retain an image of dazzling youth and genius. Another impression: Nureyev's genius as an Actor. If he could not have danced a step what would still be fantastic was his magic in transforming himself.' The episode ends with 'telegrams from Violet that I should return to Florence that I was ruining my reputation by being with the ballet people in Milano. Typical Violet jealous nonsense! Reputation be damned! These were the best of weeks for which I'll always be grateful to R.' The pamphlet ends with the assessment of Nureyev of Serge Lifar now lacking 'the celebrated beauty that had enchanted Diaghilev': 'After myself and Nijinski he is best'. The item is not present among the 'Writings' listed in the inventory of the Phillips Papers at the Lilly Library and as stated only one other copy has been traced. That copy in larger format and dated to 2009 is present among the Barbara Reed collection of Phillips papers offered separately. Privately printed. [Phuket, Thailand; 2009.] Inscription of February 2011. unknown‎

‎William Thomas Moncrieff 1794 1857 English playwright and theatre manager Thomas Simpson Cooke Irish singer and composer:‎

‎William Thomas Moncrieff English playwright and theatre manager. Autograph Letter Signed inviting to the Irish singer and composer Tom Cooke to collaborate on a production at the Victoria Theatre.‎

‎3 November 1835; Victoria i.e. the Victoria Theatre London. See the two men’s entries in the Oxford DNB. 2pp 12mo. Bifolium. Aged and a little worn with short closed tear at head of the first leaf repaired with tape and the second leaf having a discoloration at one edge from tape used in mount. Signed ‘W. T. Moncrieff’. Casting interesting light on the production of melodramas in the ‘Surrey-side’ theatres. In an effort to induce him to collaborate with him on a production at the Victoria Theatre he begins: ‘My dear Cooke / Without wishing to interfere with any arrangement you may have made or may be contemplating to make - there can be no harm in my dropping a hint that the Proprietors here would be most happy to secure your Services at any time on your own terms - if at all within their means’. Such an arrangement would also please Moncrieff ‘as I have the idea of a Drama that I think very likely to prove quite as attractive as ever “My Poll and my Partner Joe†may prove.’ That play by J. T. Haines and with music by Jolly was a great success at the Royal Surrey Theatre in the same year. He ends by asking Cooke to ‘turn this over in hyour mind at your leisure and favor me with a line on the subject’. 3 November 1835; Victoria [i.e. the Victoria Theatre, London]. unknown‎
