19th Century. . Very good. - 14 words penned on 5-1/2 inch high by 4-3/8 inch wide "5 Upper Wimpole Street" stationery with the address embossed in red at the top. The English singer and composer responds to a request for her autograph "I have much pleasure in granting your request." Signed "Charlotte H. Sainton". Once folded for mailing with clipped corners the note is mounted with glue from the verso onto heavier stock clipped from an album. Very good. <p> Born Charlotte Helen Dolby the English contralto Charlotte Sainton-Dolby 1821-1885 studied under Domenico Crivelli at the Royal Academy of Music and first appeared at a Royal Philharmonic Society concert in 1841. She married the violinist Prosper Sainton and after retiring from singing she met with with some success as a composer. Her compositions include: "The Legend of St Dorothea" "The Story of the Faithful Soul" and "Florimel" 19th Century. unknown

Grosvenor Square November 30 19th Century. . Good. - Over 50 words penned on 7 inch high by 4-1/2 inch wide "52 Park Street Grosvenor Square" stationery framed by black mourning borders. Sir Balwyn Leighton writes to the historian Edward Pears that he is sending him a corrected "proof copy" of his pamphlet "Poor Law out-relief" requesting several copies when printed. He also inquires as to whether his other paper will also be printed. Signed "Baldwyn Leighton". Folded for mailing the top edge is darkened with a small hole to the top right corner. The letter was likely once mounted into an album as evidenced by glue stains and paper remnants along the top edge of the verso. Good. <p>The English Conservative Party politician Sir Baldwyn Leighton 8th Baronet 1836-1897 was educated at Eton College and Christ Church Oxford. He served in the South Salopian Yeomanry Cavalry. He was J.P. and Deputy Lieutenant for Shropshire. Leighton was later elected as a Member of Parliament for South Shropshire. Classifying himself as a liberal Conservative party member he published several pamphlets on "poor law" and "Labour" as well as the "Letters of the Late Edward Denison MP".<p>The British barrister Sir Edwin Pears 1835-1919 was a historian and author who for a period of 40 years lived in Constantinople. He settled there in 1873 practicing in the consular courts and served as president of the European bar in what is now Istanbul. Pears traveled throughout Turkey and its dominions and studied its history and culture. As a correspondent for The Daily News in 1876 he described Ottoman atrocities and Bulgaria's April Uprising. 19th Century. . Good. - The English artist's autographed sentiment "yours truly Fred. R. Lee" penned on 1 inch wide 2-7/8 inch wide creamy white paper. The corners are clipped and the autograph is mounted with glue from the verso onto heavier stock clipped from an album. Good. <p>The English artist Frederick Richard Lee 1798-1879 was born in Vleesch Band South Africa. Lee enrolled as a student at the Royal Academy at the age of 19 and was later elected as an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1834 and subsequently a full member in 1838. A prolific artist Lee was influenced by John Constable and other contemporaries. In addition to his solo work he collaborated with Thomas Sidney Cooper and Sir Edwin Landseer to produce some of his most notable paintings. December 14 1869. 1869. Good. - Over 70 words penned on two sides of 7 inch high by 4-1/2 inch wide creamy white paper. The first page of the letter is framed by black mourning borders. The letter penned in a difficult hand is signed "Chr. Wordsworth". Folded for mailing the letter was once mounted into an album and the top line penned on the verso is obscured by remnants of paper adhering to the edge. Good. <p>The Anglican Bishop and man of letters Christopher Wordsworth 1807-1885 was a nephew of the celebrated poet William Wordsworth. A student at Winchester and Trinity Cambridge he distinguished himself as an athlete as well as being awarded the Chancellor's Gold Medal for poetry in 1827 and again in 1828. He took holy orders and in 1832 toured Greece where he wrote several works on the country's topography and archaeology including his famous "Wordsworth's" Greece. Returning to Britain he became Public Orator at Cambridge and was appointed Headmaster of Harrow. Wordsworth held positions as Vicar and Archdeacon before Benjamin Disraeli appointed him Bishop of Lincoln in 1869. December 14, 1869. unknown

London January 8th. . Very good. - Over 30 words boldly penned on 6-1/2 inch high by 4-1/2 inch wide "18 St. John's Wood Road" embossed stationery. In his brief letter addressed to T.H. Hills Davis asks if he would "kindly add the address of Miss Leslie to the enclosed & then post it." apologizing in a postscript that "I have no means of knowing her address". Signed "H.W.B. Davis". Folded for mailing with a couple of smudges there are glue stains to the top corners of the verso. Very good. <p>The popular English landscape & animal painter Henry William Banks Davis 1833-1914 was noted for his pastoral scenes. His landscapes often featured cattle and farm animals. A student at the Royal Academy he exhibited there and was made an associate and later named Royal Academician. A brief note addressed to the young Seymour Halpern enclosing her autograph: "I have pleasure in enclosing you my Autograph". Signed "Leonie Aminoff". Folded for mailing. Near fine with an attached integral blank leaf. <p>The Finnish author Constance Leonie Caroline Aminoff 1870-1951 published works in both Swedish and English. The following are among her English language publications: "The Broad Walk" and several books in "The Torchlight series of Napoleonic Romances" including "Revolution" "Love" "Ambition" "Victory" "Triumph" "Arrogance" "Storm" and "Retreat" among others.<p>The Queens New York Republican Congressman Seymour Halpern 1913-1997 started his political career as a campaign aide to New York's powerful mayor Fiorella La Guardia and first served in New York's State Senate for 14 years before seeking a seat in the U.S. Congress. In Albany Halpern sponsored 279 bills that became law including measures on schools housing civil rights nutrition and mental health. A Liberal he was something of an anomaly as the lone Republican representative from New York City and generally garnered support from Labor Unions and endorsement from the Liberal Party. Yet he never even considered switching parties as he considered membership in the Republican Party a family tradition and commitment. While he found ample time for his private pursuits including painting and collecting autographs he took his legislative duties very seriously. Good. - A note on a 7 inch high by 4-1/2 inch wide sheet of his letterhead sending his autograph to a Miss Nicholson as requested and quoting 4 lines from one of his most famous poems. The letterhead has been mounted on a slightly larger sheet of card by the recipient. There are a few small stains to the edge of the note with light glue staining to the bottom edge of the mount. The note has been folded twice for mailing. Good. <p>Tupper quotes the first four lines of his famous poem "Never Give Up!": "Never give up!--it is wiser and better / Always to hope than once to despair; / Fling off the load of doubt's heavy fetter / And break the dark spell of tyrannical care / &c. &c. &c.". Tupper makes a change to the third line which reads "Doubt's cankering fetter" in the published version.<p>Martin Farquhar Tupper 1810-1889 was an English writer and poet. Good. <p>Wilson Barrett 1846-1904 was an English theatre manager actor and playwright. Barrett and his company were credited with attracting the largest crowds of English theatre goers because of his success with melodrama. His most successful play both in England and the United States was "The Sign of the Cross" 1895.<p>"Clito" was a play by Sydney Grundy in which Barrett performed the principle role in 1886. Circa 1870s. 1870s. Good. - A slip of cream paper approximately 1-3/8 inches high by 2-3/4 inches wide has been signed within a decorative pink frame "Faithfully Yours / W. Morley Punshon." The slip has been mounted on a slightly larger piece of pink paper partially framed in black. There is some glue staining to the slip of paper & the mount and the mount is slightly unevenly cut. Good. <p>William Morley Punshon 1824-1881 was an English Nonconformist Minister. In 1868 he went to Chicago as the representative of the Wesleyan Methodist conference then settled in Canada. During his five years in Canada he did much to advance the cause of his denomination. His preaching and lecturing drew huge crowds both in Canada and the United States. He returned to England in 1873 and was elected president of conference in 1874. An indication of the power of his preaching was the collections raised after his sermons. Good. - A 2-line quotation is penned on an approximately 7 inch high by 4-1/2 inch wide sheet of cream-colored note paper with his address printed in raised lettering in blind at top right. Signed "Howard Bindloss". There is a small stain to the right hand edge of the paper. A piece of tape adheres to the verso where the autograph was removed from an album. Folded twice for mailing with an additional light crease near the bottom edge. Good. <p>The quotation reads; "And ship to ship made signal / Man answered back his name -- ".<p>Harold Edward Bindloss 1866-1945 was an English novelist who wrote many adventure novels set in western Canada. In his youth Bindloss traveled around the world farming in Canada and working in southern regions as a cargo heaver and planter and at other jobs. He returned to England with his health damaged by malaria. He was more than 30 years old when he published his first book an account of his travel in Africa and found his true vocation. Circa 1920s. 1920s. Good. - A 3-1/2 inch high by 5 inch wide piece of cream-colored paper is signed "John Drinkwater" in black ink. The paper has been mounted on a 6-5/8 inch high by 8-1/4 inch wide sheet of gray card with a small newspaper portrait of Drinkwater glued to the top right corner. A note on the poet has been penned in another hand on the top edge of the card. The paper is slightly rippled from the mounting. Good. <p>English author John Drinkwater began publishing poetry with "The Death of Leander" in 1906. The first volume of his Collected Poems was published in 1923. In the period immediately before the First World War he was one of a group of poets associated with the Gloucestershire village of Dymock along with Rupert Brooke and others. Drinkwater had his first major success with his play "Abraham Lincoln" which he followed up with other plays in a historical vein including "Mary Stuart' and "Oliver Cromwell". The letterhead is slightly unevenly cut with remnants of tape on he verso where it has been removed from an album. Very good. <p>Warwick Deeping 1877-1950 was an English novelist and short-story writer whose best-known novel was "Sorrell and Son" 1925. After serving in the Royal Army Medical Corps during World War I Deeping gave up his job as a doctor to become a full-time writer. His early work was dominated by historical romances. His later novels more often dealt with modern life and were critical of many tendencies of twentieth century civilization. His attitude was generally one of passionate individualism distrustful of both ruling elites and the lower classes who were often presented as a threat to his embattled middle-class protagonists. Good. <p>The English chemist John Thomas Cooper 1790-1854 was a noted lecturer chemical analyst and supplier of chemicals at the time interest in the study of chemistry was growing. He devised and collaborated on the production of tools and techniques including the development of a hydrometer and an oxy-hydrogen microscope among others. Good. - A few words penned in black ink on part of a sheet of letterhead 5-1/4 inches high by 4-1/4 inches wide with the embossed Privy Council seal printed in blind at the top. The paper is mounted on a piece of card of the same size. Signed "John Simon". The letterhead is slightly discolored from the mounting with 2 tiny brown marks near the top edge. The note was folded twice for mailing. There are glue marks remnants of paper & 2 ink notations on the verso of the mount. Good. <p>Simon writes that the change proposed by his correspondent is quite acceptable to him.<p>Sir John Simon 1816-1904 was an English pathologist surgeon and public health reformer. He held surgical posts at King's College Hospital and St. Thomas's Hospital in London from 1840 until 1876. Public health was not considered a responsibility of the government in the early 19th century. Parliament passed the Public Health Act of 1848 partly in response to Simon's influence and to deal with the threat of cholera and other public health problems. Simon was appointed the first Medical Officer of Health for the City of London. He was later made the head of the Medical Department of the Government and remained in that post until his retirement in 1876. Though he had no previous public health experience Simon's ongoing interest in pathology gave him a distinct advantage as a medical officer. He called for municipal action to provide adequate sanitary disposal and drainage improved standards of housing and upgrading of the water supply. His advocacy resulted in the Sanitary Act of 1875 which for the first time made a public health law universal and compulsory. The paper is lightly stained & creased from the mounting. Folded twice for mailing. Good. <p>Sykes writes to a Mr. J. Robinson about serving on a committee: "I am glad that the subject of India is to be taken up by the ------- ------. I shall be happy to act in the proposed committee but on Thursday I leave London & shall not be able to attend the first meeting."<p>Colonel William Henry Sykes 1790-1872 was an English naturalist who served with the British military in India. He was a pioneer of the Victorian statistical movement and a founder of the Royal Statistical Society. He was actively involved in the Siege of Bhurtpur 1805 and the battles of Kirkee and Poonah. After traveling in Europe for four years he returned to India as a statistical reporter. He produced voluminous statistical reports and natural history reports illustrated with drawings. The letter has been tipped onto a sheet of pink paper approximately 8-3/4 inches high by 7 inches wide. Signed "W. Morley Punshon". `The left edge of the mount is faded and both the letter & the pink paper are lightly rippled from the mounting. Very good. <p>Punshon writes to a Mr. Frendship: "I am quite unable to take any additional engagements. I am embarrased by the number I have".<p>William Morley Punshon 1824-1881 was an English nonconformist minister. Ordained in Manchester in 1849 he went to Chicago as the representative of the Wesleyan Methodist conference. He subsequently settled in Canada and did much to advance the cause of his denomination. His preaching and lectures drew great crowds both in Canada and the United States and he was five times president of the Canadian conference. He also restored the fortunes of the flagging Victoria college in Cobourg Ontario now Victoria University and created the great Metropolitan Methodist Church in downtown Toronto now Metropolitan United Church. I am grateful for your help & refreshed by your enthusiasm. It gives me great pleasure to send you a photograph & to think that it will earn the honour of a place on the walls of your office." Good. - Single-spaced typed letter written from the Hippodrome London and filling one side of the event letterhead10-1/4 inches high by 8 inches wide for "George Robey's Concert in aid of The Metropolitan and City Police Orphanage at the Palladium". Signed "Yours sincerely / George Robey". The edges of the letterhead are chipped & slightly darkened. There are some crosses in the left margin emphasizing one paragraph of the letter made by either Robey or the recipient. Good. <p>George Robey writes to novelist Hall Caine profusely thanking him for sending him the manuscript of an Address to be read at the charity event and for having it bound for auction. "I have asked Mr. Sutcliffe to be kind enough to let you have it first in order that you may put your signature on the title page.I will get Miss Vanbrugh who is to read the address to sign it on Sunday and also put my own name and any other people connected with the concert who may be of interest.I feel sure that in addition to helping the collection that night your generous gift will realise a large sum on its own account."<p>George Robey 1869-1954 English comedian singer and actor in musical comedy is regarded as one of the greatest music hall performers of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Hall Caine 1853-1931 was a Manx author best known as a novelist and playwright. In his day he was extremely popular and his novels outsold those of his contemporaries. The letter is mounted on a slightly larger piece of tan paper. Signed "Yours very truly / Daniel Terry" with his Alfred Place address and the date below the signature. There is some light staining to the letter's left bottom corner with some tiny marks to its left margin. Folded twice for mailing. Good. <p>Terry's note addressed to "My dear Kelly" is accepting an invitation to dine with Kelly and a mutual friend.<p>Daniel Terry c. 1780-1829 was an English actor and playwright who made his career in London Edinburgh and the northern English provinces. He was a close associate of Walter Scott and adapted several of Scott's works for the stage. The first of these was a musical adaptation of "Guy Mannering" in which Terry appeared in March 1816. A 4-PAGE AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED by HENRY GREY REGARDING THE 1871 NEWCASTLE LABOR STRIKE FOR NINE HOUR DAYS.
Northumberland August 5 1871. 1871. Good. - Octavo 7-1/8 inches high by 4-3/8 inches wide. Over 300 words penned on all four sides of a folded sheet of creamy white paper with the address embossed in blind at the top of the cover sheet. Replying to a request for his assistance in working out a solution to the strike by engineers in Newcastle seeking that limits be placed on the hours they are required to work each day: "I also yesterday received a letter on the same subject from Mr Lowthian Bell - In answer to his letter I told Mr. Bell that I would be very glad to do anything in my power to assist in bringing the unfortunate strike at Newcastle to a close but that I fear that nothing that I would do would be likely to promote that object & might even tend rather to increase than to diminish the existing irritation between the employers & the employed." Earl Grey asks if the recipient might have some "arrangement to propose for the settlement." which might help him decide if he should get involved in the negotiations. He mentions in closing that he will be traveling over the next several days culminating with his being "compelled to go to London to vote against the ballot bill". Signed "Grey". Folded twice horizontally the letter was once mounted or tipped-in to a book with remnants of paper adhering to the top edge of the last page not affecting the text. There is also a tiny piece of dark paper near the lower center of the last page which does not touch on the text. <p>The "Nine Hours Strike" began in August of 1871 when engineers in Newcastle upon Tyne and adjoining areas requested that working hours be limited to nine hours a day. The bitter strike was prolonged when employers refused to talk and brought in foreign workers in an attempt to break the strike. Though there were a few incidents of violence many of the foreign workers soon realized that they were being used to support a system of industrial slavery and would lose their jobs anyway once the strike was resolved. The strike went on for 14 weeks before employers finally compromised and granted the strikers' request.<p>The Ballot Bill to which Earl Grey refers proposed that parliamentary and local elections in the UK take place by secret ballot. The Bill was passed in 1872.<p>Also known as Viscount Howick the English statesman Henry George Grey 3rd Earl Grey 1802-1894 entered parliament in 1826. His father became Prime Minister when the Whigs came to power in 1830 and Earl Grey then Viscount Howick was made Under-Secretary of State for War and the Colonies. Aligned with colonial reformers he resigned in 1834 when the emancipation of slaves was made to take place gradually instead of immediately. He became Secretary of War when he entered Lord Melbourne's cabinet in 1835 and made significant administrative reforms. He again resigned in dissatisfaction in 1839 and gained a reputation for crotchetiness. He supported free trade and as colonial secretary a post to which he was appointed in 1846 was the first minister to proclaim that the colonies should be governed for their own benefit and not for that of Great Britain & Ireland. As much as possible he accorded them self-governance. He was however soon embroiled in the turmoil and discontent brewing in Ceylon the West Indies and New Zealand. He authored several works on political subjects and policy including an 1888 work on the state of Ireland and one on the United States tariff. Northumberland, August 5, 1871. unknown

The letterhead is bordered in black. Signed "Yours very sincerely / W. G. Cusins." There is some very light foxing & soiling to the letterhead & scraps of gray paper adhere to the verso where the letter has been removed from an album. Folded once for mailing. Very good. <p>Cusins responds to a request for his autograph.<p>Sir William George Cusins 1833-1893 was an English pianist violinist organist conductor and composer. He toured widely in England and Europe as a concert pianist and composer. He also played the violin in various London orchestras. In 1851 he succeeded Sterndale Bennett as conductor of the Philharmonic Society and remained in that post until 1883. Very good. <p>Wright is pictured in a confident three-quarters length pose standing arms akimbo with his hands in his pockets wearing a striped waistcoat black suit and a shirt with a big high-necked collar.<p>Huntley Wright 1868-1941 was an English stage and film actor comedian dancer and singer. From 1896 he spent ten years creating roles in some of the most popular Edwardian musical comedies at Daly's Theatre. After serving in the army in World War I he continued playing in comedies musical theatre and drama. He also frequently broadcast on the radio and later in his career appeared in several films. J.
