A brief letter in which Arthur Mee asks the book binder George Sutcliffe Sangorski & Sutcliffe "Will you please bind this for me like the rest." Signed "A.M". with a brief annotation in pencil in the margin most probably initialed by Sutcliffe: "When finished put in - Autograph box." Near fine. <p>The English writer journalist and educator Arthur Mee 1875-1943 is best known for "The Harmsworth Self-Educator" "The Children's Encyclopaedia" and "The Children's Newspaper". He left school at 14 to work at a local newspaper and became an editor by the age of 20. Contributing many articles he went to work for The Daily Mail in 1898 and subsequently became literary editor. Though they bore an anti-Catholic and anti-intellectual slant his books continued to be published after his death at 67 years old especially his guide to the counties of England "The King's England". Good. - The close of a letter penned on 2-18 inch high by 8-1/2 inch wide lined buff paper clipped from the bottom of a page. Isidore de Lara has written and signed "I am Yours Very Sincerely Isidore de Lara" on the roughly cut sheet of paper. There are a couple of faint spots of foxing and the shadow of a word along the bottom of the sheet. Folded twice vertically with remnants of mounting paper pasted to the top of the verso. Good. <p>Isidore de Lara 1858-1935 was an English composer and singer. Born Isidore Cohen he was successful during the 1890's composing music for the opera in Monte Carlo. 1942. 1942. Very good. - A 3-1/2 inch high by 4-1/8 inch wide card signed & dated by the great British screen & stage actor John Gielgud with his sentiments: "John Gielgud / best wishes 1942". Once likely mounted in an album there are paper & glue remnants adhering to one edge of the verso. A vertical crease at right touches on the date but not the signature. Very good. <p>The great British actor Sir John Gielgud 1904-2000 dominated the British stage for much of the 20th century as both an actor and director. Considered by many as the finest Hamlet of his era he also starred and played supporting roles in movies. From September 1936 through February 1937 Gielgud starred as Hamlet in North America opening first in Toronto before moving on to perform in New York and Boston. 1942. unknown

AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED by the English Composer Conductor & Pianist JOHN LIPTROT HATTON mentioning his as yet unnamed composition "Rose or Love's Ransom".
August 1st 1864. 1864. Good. - A two-and-a-half page letter consisting of over 80 words penned on three sides of 8 inch high by 5-1/8 inch wide "The Opera Company" stationery. Hatton has crossed out the letterhead and penned his home address below. In his letter addressed to James Couper sp Hatton seeks to correct the assumption made in an article about the title of his forthcoming opera: "My dear Sir" he writes "There is an article in Saturday's Orchestra signed 'J.C." -- J.C. it is yours -- what put it in yr head that my opera is called 'Blue Beard' The story of my work is as unlike the career of that courageous individual as it well can be." He goes on to write that he's not yet decided on a name for his work "but I think it is likely to be 'Rose de mai-" and requests that J.C. correct the mistake. Signed "J.L. Hatton". The recipient has penciled "yes JC" in the left margin of the first page affirming that he was indeed the author of the article. Folded several times for mailing with a couple of short tears along the edges of the folds. The bottom third of the integral second leaf has been clipped without loss to the text. Apparently once mounted into an album with paper remnants along the top and inner edges of the verso of the second leaf. Good. <p>The English composer conductor pianist and singer John Liptrot Hatton 1809-1886 was a pupil of Michael Maybrick and also studied in the academy of Mr. Molyneux. An organist by the age of 16 he acted on the Liverpool stage and later performed in London in Macready's Drury Lane production of "Othello". A man of many talents he was making a name for himself as a musician and composer at the same time directing the choruses in the English Opera series at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane and composing his own works. His fist operetta "Queen of the Thames or The Anglers" was followed by a more ambitious work "Pascal Bruno". He composed numerous songs in the style of the German classics and performed as a pianist. Hatton toured in the U.S. from 1848 to 1850 performing several public and private concerts in New York City which included some of his own works. As a composer Hatton set to music various songs to poems by Robert Herrick perhaps the most famous of which was "To Anthea". Engaged as Director of Music at the Princess's Theatre in London he composed music for "Macbeth" "Sardanapalus King of Assyria" "Henry VIII" "Faust and Marguerite" and several of Shakespeare's plays. In 1864 his third opera "Rose or Love's Ransom" likely the work to which he refers in his letter was performed at the Royal English Opera Covent Garden. August 1st, 1864. unknown

Replying to a request for his autograph Reeves writes "I have to apologize for the delay in answering your polite note requesting me to send my autograph." Signed "Sims Reeves" with the date penned within his signature's flourish. Once folded the letter is mounted with glue from the verso onto heavier stock clipped from an album. Very good. <p>Considered the foremost English operatic oratorio and ballad tenor vocalist of the mid Victorian era John Sims Reeves 1821-1900 received his early music education from his father who was a bass soloist in the Royal Artillery Band. He was appointed organist and choirmaster of North Gray church at the age of 14. Replying to a request for an autograph the singer writes that "In compliance with your wishes I have the honour to sign myself yrs truly Virginia Gabriel". Once folded the note is mounted with glue from the verso onto slightly larger heavier stock clipped from an album. An unidentified autograph note is mounted on the verso of the mount. Good. <p>The English singer and composer Virginia Gabriel 1825-1877 studied piano with Johann Peter Pixis Theodor Dohler Sigismond Thalberg and Bernhard Molique. She also studied composition with the opera composer Saverio Mercadante. Gabriel composed popular ballads which were highly regarded but given the times she struggled to gain recognition for her more serious compositions and she had to personally publish her cantata "Dreamland". Gabriel died from injuries sustained from a fall from a carriage just a few short years after marrying the librettist George March. In addition to "Dreamland" Gabriel wrote several cantatas including "Evangeline" and "Graziella". She also wrote several operas including "Widows Bewitched" "A Quiet Chateau" "Lost and Found" "Grass Widows" "The Shepherd of Cournouailles" among others. Grosvenor Place, 19th Century. unknown

May 29th 1868. 1868. Very good. - A few words penned on his 4-5/8 inch high by 5 inch wide stationary with his pictorial seal embossed in blue at the top. The seal bears Coleridge's motto "Time Deum Cole Regem" embossed within a belt framing ears of wheat in front of a cross an otter "statant" i.e. standing with all four paws on the ground in the foreground. Coleridge has penned but a few words "I am Madam faithfully yours John Duke Coleridge". Once folded the note is mounted with glue from the verso onto heavier stock clipped from an album. Very good. <p>The English lawyer judge and Liberal politician John Duke Coleridge 1st Baron Coleridge 1820-1894 was the great-nephew of the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge. An attorney practicing on the western circuit Coleridge held several appointments and was elected to the House of Commons for Exeter. Appointed Solicitor-General under Gladstone he was promoted to Attorney-General for England and Wales. He was subsequently appointed Chief Justice for the Common Pleas and then Lord Chief Justice of England. He was recognized by the "Women's Suffrage Journal" as a "firm and consistent" supporter of women's suffrage. May 29th, 1868. unknown

Very good. <p>The English concert and operatic soprano Helen Lemmens-Sherrington 1834-1906 was born in Northern England though she spent much of her early life in Belgium studying at the Brussels Conservatory. Her London debut came in 1856 after having performed throughout Europe. Though she mostly sang roles in concert performances through the earlier part of her career she started appearing in operatic soprano roles in the first half of the 1860's performing at Covent Garden among other leading theaters. She later taught at the Brussels Conservatory as well as London's Royal Academy of Music and the Royal Manchester College of Music. July, 1868. unknown

Sir Balwyn Leighton writes to the historian Edward Pears that he is sending him a corrected "proof copy" of his pamphlet "Poor Law out-relief" requesting several copies when printed. He also inquires as to whether his other paper will also be printed. Signed "Baldwyn Leighton". Folded for mailing the top edge is darkened with a small hole to the top right corner. The letter was likely once mounted into an album as evidenced by glue stains and paper remnants along the top edge of the verso. Good. <p>The English Conservative Party politician Sir Baldwyn Leighton 8th Baronet 1836-1897 was educated at Eton College and Christ Church Oxford. He served in the South Salopian Yeomanry Cavalry. He was J.P. and Deputy Lieutenant for Shropshire. Leighton was later elected as a Member of Parliament for South Shropshire. Classifying himself as a liberal Conservative party member he published several pamphlets on "poor law" and "Labour" as well as the "Letters of the Late Edward Denison MP".<p>The British barrister Sir Edwin Pears 1835-1919 was a historian and author who for a period of 40 years lived in Constantinople. He settled there in 1873 practicing in the consular courts and served as president of the European bar in what is now Istanbul. Pears traveled throughout Turkey and its dominions and studied its history and culture. As a correspondent for The Daily News in 1876 he described Ottoman atrocities and Bulgaria's April Uprising. Good. <p>The English artist Frederick Richard Lee 1798-1879 was born in Vleesch Band South Africa. Lee enrolled as a student at the Royal Academy at the age of 19 and was later elected as an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1834 and subsequently a full member in 1838. A prolific artist Lee was influenced by John Constable and other contemporaries. In addition to his solo work he collaborated with Thomas Sidney Cooper and Sir Edwin Landseer to produce some of his most notable paintings. A student at Winchester and Trinity Cambridge he distinguished himself as an athlete as well as being awarded the Chancellor's Gold Medal for poetry in 1827 and again in 1828. He took holy orders and in 1832 toured Greece where he wrote several works on the country's topography and archaeology including his famous "Wordsworth's" Greece. Returning to Britain he became Public Orator at Cambridge and was appointed Headmaster of Harrow. Near fine with an attached integral blank leaf. <p>The Finnish author Constance Leonie Caroline Aminoff 1870-1951 published works in both Swedish and English. The following are among her English language publications: "The Broad Walk" and several books in "The Torchlight series of Napoleonic Romances" including "Revolution" "Love" "Ambition" "Victory" "Triumph" "Arrogance" "Storm" and "Retreat" among others.<p>The Queens New York Republican Congressman Seymour Halpern 1913-1997 started his political career as a campaign aide to New York's powerful mayor Fiorella La Guardia and first served in New York's State Senate for 14 years before seeking a seat in the U.S. Congress. In Albany Halpern sponsored 279 bills that became law including measures on schools housing civil rights nutrition and mental health. A Liberal he was something of an anomaly as the lone Republican representative from New York City and generally garnered support from Labor Unions and endorsement from the Liberal Party. Yet he never even considered switching parties as he considered membership in the Republican Party a family tradition and commitment. While he found ample time for his private pursuits including painting and collecting autographs he took his legislative duties very seriously. Good. <p>William Morley Punshon 1824-1881 was an English Nonconformist Minister. In 1868 he went to Chicago as the representative of the Wesleyan Methodist conference then settled in Canada. During his five years in Canada he did much to advance the cause of his denomination. His preaching and lecturing drew huge crowds both in Canada and the United States. He returned to England in 1873 and was elected president of conference in 1874. An indication of the power of his preaching was the collections raised after his sermons. Good. - A few words penned in black ink on part of a sheet of letterhead 5-1/4 inches high by 4-1/4 inches wide with the embossed Privy Council seal printed in blind at the top. The paper is mounted on a piece of card of the same size. Signed "John Simon". The letterhead is slightly discolored from the mounting with 2 tiny brown marks near the top edge. The note was folded twice for mailing. There are glue marks remnants of paper & 2 ink notations on the verso of the mount. Good. <p>Simon writes that the change proposed by his correspondent is quite acceptable to him.<p>Sir John Simon 1816-1904 was an English pathologist surgeon and public health reformer. He held surgical posts at King's College Hospital and St. Thomas's Hospital in London from 1840 until 1876. Public health was not considered a responsibility of the government in the early 19th century. Parliament passed the Public Health Act of 1848 partly in response to Simon's influence and to deal with the threat of cholera and other public health problems. Simon was appointed the first Medical Officer of Health for the City of London. He was later made the head of the Medical Department of the Government and remained in that post until his retirement in 1876. Though he had no previous public health experience Simon's ongoing interest in pathology gave him a distinct advantage as a medical officer. He called for municipal action to provide adequate sanitary disposal and drainage improved standards of housing and upgrading of the water supply. His advocacy resulted in the Sanitary Act of 1875 which for the first time made a public health law universal and compulsory. After traveling in Europe for four years he returned to India as a statistical reporter. He produced voluminous statistical reports and natural history reports illustrated with drawings. London: 18th April 1825. 1825. Good. - Octavo. 25 words penned in black ink on a sheet of ctream paper approximately 6-3/4 inches high by 4-5/8 inches wide. The letter is mounted on a slightly larger piece of tan paper. Signed "Yours very truly / Daniel Terry" with his Alfred Place address and the date below the signature. There is some light staining to the letter's left bottom corner with some tiny marks to its left margin. Folded twice for mailing. Good. <p>Terry's note addressed to "My dear Kelly" is accepting an invitation to dine with Kelly and a mutual friend.<p>Daniel Terry c. 1780-1829 was an English actor and playwright who made his career in London Edinburgh and the northern English provinces. He was a close associate of Walter Scott and adapted several of Scott's works for the stage. The first of these was a musical adaptation of "Guy Mannering" in which Terry appeared in March 1816. A 4-PAGE AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED by HENRY GREY REGARDING THE 1871 NEWCASTLE LABOR STRIKE FOR NINE HOUR DAYS.
Northumberland August 5 1871. 1871. Good. - Octavo 7-1/8 inches high by 4-3/8 inches wide. Over 300 words penned on all four sides of a folded sheet of creamy white paper with the address embossed in blind at the top of the cover sheet. Replying to a request for his assistance in working out a solution to the strike by engineers in Newcastle seeking that limits be placed on the hours they are required to work each day: "I also yesterday received a letter on the same subject from Mr Lowthian Bell - In answer to his letter I told Mr. Bell that I would be very glad to do anything in my power to assist in bringing the unfortunate strike at Newcastle to a close but that I fear that nothing that I would do would be likely to promote that object & might even tend rather to increase than to diminish the existing irritation between the employers & the employed." Earl Grey asks if the recipient might have some "arrangement to propose for the settlement." which might help him decide if he should get involved in the negotiations. He mentions in closing that he will be traveling over the next several days culminating with his being "compelled to go to London to vote against the ballot bill". Signed "Grey". Folded twice horizontally the letter was once mounted or tipped-in to a book with remnants of paper adhering to the top edge of the last page not affecting the text. There is also a tiny piece of dark paper near the lower center of the last page which does not touch on the text. <p>The "Nine Hours Strike" began in August of 1871 when engineers in Newcastle upon Tyne and adjoining areas requested that working hours be limited to nine hours a day. The bitter strike was prolonged when employers refused to talk and brought in foreign workers in an attempt to break the strike. Though there were a few incidents of violence many of the foreign workers soon realized that they were being used to support a system of industrial slavery and would lose their jobs anyway once the strike was resolved. The strike went on for 14 weeks before employers finally compromised and granted the strikers' request.<p>The Ballot Bill to which Earl Grey refers proposed that parliamentary and local elections in the UK take place by secret ballot. The Bill was passed in 1872.<p>Also known as Viscount Howick the English statesman Henry George Grey 3rd Earl Grey 1802-1894 entered parliament in 1826. His father became Prime Minister when the Whigs came to power in 1830 and Earl Grey then Viscount Howick was made Under-Secretary of State for War and the Colonies. Aligned with colonial reformers he resigned in 1834 when the emancipation of slaves was made to take place gradually instead of immediately. He became Secretary of War when he entered Lord Melbourne's cabinet in 1835 and made significant administrative reforms. He again resigned in dissatisfaction in 1839 and gained a reputation for crotchetiness. He supported free trade and as colonial secretary a post to which he was appointed in 1846 was the first minister to proclaim that the colonies should be governed for their own benefit and not for that of Great Britain & Ireland. As much as possible he accorded them self-governance. He was however soon embroiled in the turmoil and discontent brewing in Ceylon the West Indies and New Zealand. He authored several works on political subjects and policy including an 1888 work on the state of Ireland and one on the United States tariff. Northumberland, August 5, 1871. unknown

33 Nottingham Place W. February 28th 1881. 1881. Very good. - Octavo. A few words sending his autograph penned on a cream sheet of his personalized letterhead 7-1/8 inches high by 4-1/2 inches wide. The letterhead is bordered in black. Signed "Yours very sincerely / W. G. Cusins." There is some very light foxing & soiling to the letterhead & scraps of gray paper adhere to the verso where the letter has been removed from an album. Folded once for mailing. Very good. <p>Cusins responds to a request for his autograph.<p>Sir William George Cusins 1833-1893 was an English pianist violinist organist conductor and composer. He toured widely in England and Europe as a concert pianist and composer. He also played the violin in various London orchestras. In 1851 he succeeded Sterndale Bennett as conductor of the Philharmonic Society and remained in that post until 1883. Boldly signed in black ink across the bottom edge of the image "Huntley Wright". The edges of the address side of the postcard are darkened. Very good. <p>Wright is pictured in a confident three-quarters length pose standing arms akimbo with his hands in his pockets wearing a striped waistcoat black suit and a shirt with a big high-necked collar.<p>Huntley Wright 1868-1941 was an English stage and film actor comedian dancer and singer. From 1896 he spent ten years creating roles in some of the most popular Edwardian musical comedies at Daly's Theatre. After serving in the army in World War I he continued playing in comedies musical theatre and drama. He also frequently broadcast on the radio and later in his career appeared in several films. J. He is leaning slightly backwards his left arm supporting his back his other arm held aloft with three juggling pins gripped in the fingers of his right hand. He composed numerous works for the piano as well as glees songs and anthems.
