LEWIS CS
Autograph Letter Signed
<p>"C.S. Lewis" in black fountain pen ink on engraved Magdalen College Oxford letterhead May 17 1941. 8vo 4 3/8" x 7". 2 pages 1 leaf recto and verso. Fine dark and clean example. A fine letter with some fascinating insights into the author's views on his early work book dealing and the collector value of his earlier works. To Joseph McCulloch: Interesting letter about Lewis' book The Pilgrim's Regress and doubting that it would "be useful for a Forces' Programme" as "it's too darned meta-physical and full of unnecessary difficulties." Noting that "forwardness' about my own books I always regard as meritorious" the author states that the book "has been blitzed" and laments that he finds difficulty in dealing with the publisher Mr. Sheed. Providing a list of people who might have a copy the author states "I also have a strong suspicion that I might may be found for 4d in Charing Rd. - at least I can't imagine any book of mine not reaching that destination." The author concludes "I hope you won't think my reluctance to risk my own solitary copy churlish or conclude that like Wodsworth I make my own books my favourite reading! Mirrors have other uses than those of vanity." Together with a copy of C.S. Lewis' "The Problem of Pain" London The Centenary Press February 1941 third printing with the ownership signature of "Joseph McCulloch / Oxford. May 1941." Joseph McCulloch as Rector of St. Mary-le-Bow would later host "Bow Dialogues" comprising a series of dialogues held at the church of St. Mary-le-Bow London from 1964 to 1979.</p> unknown

Typed Letter Signed
<p>"C.S. Lewis" with a couple of handwritten corrections in black ink Magdalen College Oxford October 27 1947. 8" x 3 1/2"; 1 page recto only. Fine staple holes in the upper left corner. To Mr. Anderson: "Thanks for your letter. Bleiben oddly enough was our Vicar in the Oxford suburb where I live when not in College; his death was quite unexpected and he will be much missed. I think I explained when we met why nothing can make it possible for me to go abroad at the present; I am chained to a bedside by obvious and unanswerable duty. It will be distressing if people think I'm standing out for higher fees! Thanks very much for the cutting. . ." During World War I Lewis had lost his best friend and had promised to take care of his friend's mother in case he died at war. Lewis eventually took his friend's mother in. This made it difficult to make appearances giving the outward impression that he was holding out for higher appearance fees. The Rev. Thomas Eric Bleiben 1903-1947 Vicar of Holy Trinity Headington Quarry. Lewis found him too much of a liberal see footnote 108 page 272 in Collected Letters. LORD BYRON
CHILDE HAROLD'S PILGRIMAGE A ROMAUNT
LONDON: JOHN MURRAY ALBEMARLE STREET 1857 Byron George Gordon 6th Baron Byron 1788-1824. Poet. He succeeded to the barony and Newstead abbey in 1798. After Harrow and Cambridge he embarked on the grand tour which provided material for his verses in 1812 waking to find himself famous with the publication of the first two cantos of Childe Harold. Childe Harold's Pilgrimage is a lengthy narrative poem in four parts written by Lord Byron. It was published between 1812 and 1818 and is dedicated to "Ianthe". The poem describes the travels and reflections of a world-weary young man who disillusioned with a life of pleasure and revelry looks for distraction in foreign lands. In a wider sense it is an expression of the melancholy and disillusionment felt by a generation weary of the wars of the post-Revolutionary and Napoleonic eras. VERY GOOD CONDITION FOR THE AGE.
