RAVEN (James) GARSIDE (Peter) & SCHOWERLING (Rainer)
The English Novel 1770-1829: A Bibliographical Survey of Prose Fiction Published in the British Isles.
First edition, 2 vols., 8vo (240 x 160 mm), 864; 753pp., orig. cloth. Volume 1 records full details of all known prose novels in English first published in the British Isles from 1770 to 1799, with the second volume continuing on to 1829. Except for some forty titles of which no surviving copy could be found, all the entries are derived from actual examination of the books themselves. A particularly important facet of volume 2 is that information includes a study of the recently discovered Schloss Covey collection of English novels in Germany, the holdings of which, for the years 1796-1834, are more comprehensive than any other library, including the British Library.

5 Vols., 4to (268 x 180 mm), limited to 130, frontis., portrait, a very good ex-library set, later red quarter calf, cloth boards. Huth's collection, which ranked among the finest in England, was rich in incunabula, voyages, Shakespearean and early English literature, and Bibles. He began compiling this catalogue late in life, but finding it too time-consuming, he employed W.C. Hazlitt and F. S. Ellis to do most of the work. "With the assistance of Ellis and Hazlitt, Huth had started printing a magnificent catalogue of his library, with full titles of every item and exact collations, both entirely novel features in a library catalogue. The work was completed in five volumes two years after his death and has remained... a corner-stone of British bibliography." De Ricci, p. 151.

Jefferys of "La Rade de Basque" and a large folding engraved plate of "Fort de l'Aiguille, Fort Fouras and the Fort in the Island of Aix, and a Prospect of the Land about the Mouth of the River Charante, from Fort de la Aiguille to l'Isle Madame, taken art about 5 Miles distant", disbound pamphlet. Admiral Knowles was second in command with his flag in the "Neptune", under Sir Edward Hawke in the abortive expedition against Rochefort in 1757. Knowles's conduct and the conduct of the military commander, Lieutenant-General Sir John Mordaunt, provoked considerable criticism. Knowles was among those reproached for this failure and responded with a pamphlet, "The Conduct of Admiral Knowles on the Late Expedition Set in a True Light, 1758". This met with scant favour, and a notice of it in the Critical Review was so extreme that the editor, Tobias Smollett, was tried for libel and sentenced to a ?100 fine and three months imprisonment. He was superseded in his command and, though he retained his flag in the "Royal Anne", guardship at Portsmouth, he had no further active service in the English navy. Sabin, 38150; Goldsmith, 9428.

[WAGSTAFFE (William)]
A Letter from the Facetious Dr. Andrew Tripe at Bath, to his Loving Brother the Profound Greshamite [John Woodward], shewing, That the Scribendi Cacoethes is a Distemper arising from a Redundancy of Biliose Salts, and not to be Eradicated, but by a Diurnal Course of Oyls and Vomits. With an Appendix of Socrates his Clyster, and The Use of Clean Linnen in Controversy.
First edition,48pp., small stain on title, slight browning of the text, uncut, disbound. "This Letter is an attack on John Woodward, Professor of Physic at Gresham College, who repeatedly came into conflict, on scientific subjects, with members of Tory circles. It is the only one of the pieces printed in Wagstaffe's 'Miscellaneous Works', 1725, of which the authorship is undisputed." - Rothschild. ***** Some of Dr. Wagstaffe's writings have such literary merit, that Charles Wentworth Dilke conjectures that this work was written by Swift, whilst Sir Henry Craik in his 'Life of Swift' said the hypothesis was almost irresistible. Wagstaffe was a physician at St. Bartholomew's Hospital, whether he was also an original satirist influenced by Swift is open to question, but he certainly must have met him quite frequently at the house of his father-in-law, Charles Bernard. Rothschild, 2473 (second edition).
