The work is most valuable, however, in Firth's classic edition (first issued in 1885). The present edition includes Firth's final revisions.

Indeed few, if any, English counties benefit from surveys illustrated to this extent and standard. INCREASINGLY SCARCE, ESPECIALLY AS A SET IN THIS CONDITION. Apparently (and inexplicably!) not recorded by Brockett.

THIS COPY WAS PRESENTED BY EDMUND BLUNDEN TO HIS ALMA MATER CHRIST'S HOSPITAL AND BEARS AN APPROPRIATE PRESENTATION BOOKPLATE ON FRONT PASTE-DOWN AND SMALL BLIND STAMP ON TITLE. The copy is not however signed or inscribed by Blunden. An invaluable and much-needed reissue, printed by Henry Richardson and with fine plates by Wenceslaus Hollar, of the original Portsmouth edition of 1647. This edition is scarce in its own right. See Davies, 1153ff.

AN EDITION DOUBLY REMARKABLE FOR ITS CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE AUTHORIAL DEBATE, FOR IN ADDITION TO SCOTT'S NOTABLE PREFACE IT CONTAINS THE SLIP ANNOUNCING MARSH'S DISCOVERY (22 MARCH) OF THE HOLOGRAPH SECOND PRAYER. [In the preface itself], written in answer to Richard Garnett, Scott accepts all Wordsworth's conclusions in favour of the King. He publishes, from the Nicholas Papers in the BL, correspondence relating to the French edition of de Marsyr [Almack, 56]; and notes by the King in a copy of Bacon's Advancement of Learning, 1640, also in the BL...' (Madan). SUCH IS THE IMPORTANCE OF THIS ESSAY THAT ALMACK REPRINTS IT IN FULL IN HIS BIBLIOGRAPHY (pp.123-142) - IT IS THE SOLE ITEM OF SCHOLARSHIP TO BE THUS INCLUDED.
