This rare edition of the New Testament printed in 1794 at Boston for a consortium of booksellers aimed to provide a distinctly American printed Bible as an alternative to the British printings being imported and thus included the Great Seal of the United States prominently displayed on the title page. Thus suggesting that even at the dawn of the American republic certain clauses of the Bill of Rights were subject to fluid interpretation. This is an early appearance of the Great Seal of the United States and is the only instance where it was used in conjunction with a patently religious work. Copies are recorded at AAS and Duke. From an edition limited to 580 copies this is one of 515 copies in the "Colonial Edition" printed for John Howell Books by the Grabhorn Press and containing an essay by Edwin Grabhorn on typography in America in 1776. This volume contains an original leaf from a copy of the Aitken Bible one of the most celebrated American bibles being the first complete English Bible printed in America. During the colonial era the monopoly on printing English bibles belonged to the Royal Printer and the colonies were supplied entirely with bibles printed in England. The only Bible printed in the British colonies in America was the famous Eliot Indian Bible in Algonquian issued in Cambridge in 1661-63 and reprinted in 1680-85. With the Revolution this monopoly naturally ended and the embargo on goods from England acted to create a shortage. Aitken a Philadelphia printer undertook the task producing the New Testament in 1781 and the Old Testament in 1782. On completion he petitioned the Continental Congress for their endorsement and received it in September 1782. Writing to Youmans that he is sending the last corrected revise of his lecture as asking for the earliest insertion into the magazine continuing that he will be giving his lecture on Human Automatism at Belfast on the 27th "which wil be rather supplemental to thatn an repetition of my Glasgow lecture. If it is well reported as I expect it will be in one of the Belfast papers would a revised Report be of any value to you" Carpenter was noted for his research in botany microscopy zoology and physiology and was a co-leader of the research team in 1868-70 on the deep sea scientific expedition aboard the "Lightning" and "Challenger." Youmans was the founder of "Popular Science Monthly' and planned the "International Scientific Series" he was a noted lecturer on science and author of several works. Thomas Dunn English 1819-1902 was a proilific author of poems ballads and novels; he also server two terms in the U.S. Congress as a Representative from New Jersey; but his fame as a writer rests on the ballad in wrote in 1843 "Ben Bolt." First published in Nathaniel Parker Willis' magazine NEW YORK MIRROR "Ben Bolt" was set to music many times and became very popular especiallly in the version set to a tune by Nelson Kneass. In his note appended to this transcription of the poem English writes:<br /> <br /> "The foregoing stanzas are as they originally appeared in Willis & Morris's NEW YORK NEW MIRROR in the year 1843. Though they have been set to music eight tiimes the only popular melody was the one take from a German air by Kneass. The words there - three stanzas only being taken - are very much mutilated."<br /> <br /> "It was hugely successful at the time but had a new lease of life as the song that Trilby O'Ferrall sings in the novel TRILBY 1894 by George du Maurier. It is described in the novel as an 'unsophisticated little song' but when Trilby performs it under the influence of the sinister hypnotist Svengali it reawakens a 'cosmic vision of the beauty and sadness of things' in her former lover Little Billee."
