Deux éditions ont paru en 1757, l’une à l’adresse d’Amsterdam et celle-ci, donnée par les Libraires Associés de Paris. Mylne Martin 57.12C’est le premier des dix romans de madame Riccoboni. Avec ce livre, elle met au goût du jour le style épistolaire pratiqué en Angleterre par Richardson que l’abbé Prévost avait traduit avec beaucoup de succès. Ce premier roman est inspiré par une aventure personnelle de l’auteur. Persécutée par un mari violent et débauché, l’acteur Antoine François Riccoboni qu’elle avait épousé en 1734, elle l’avait quitté en 1755. “M. Boissonade a révélé cette particularité connue de peu de personnes, les lettres de Fanny Butler, données sous forme d’un roman, doivent leur origine à une liaison d’amour très réelle, et furent adressées à M. de Maillebois, dont elle était folle, et qui la quitta fort brusquement.” Gay II, 827.À la suite est relié un autre roman épistolaire de madame Riccoboni : Lettres de Milady Juliette Catesby à Milady Henriette Campley, son amie. Seconde édition. Amsterdam, 1759 ; 172 pages. Seconde édition publiée la même année que l’originale. Mylne Martin, 59.22 - Gay II, 827 : “Petit roman sentimental, bien écrit et devenu classique”. Coins inférieurs usés, sinon bel exemplaire.

Il donne ensuite quelques nouvelles. Belle et intéressante lettre à laquelle on joint une traduction.
