‎Reformations, Three Medieval Authors in Manuscript and Movable Type‎

‎, Brepols - Harvey Miller, 2007 Hardcover. XVI 231 p., 4 b/w ill., 1 b/w tables, 160 x 240 mm, Languages: English, Including an index. Fine copy. ISBN 9782503523163.‎

‎This volume discusses the key shift from manuscript to print culture in the history of books, taking The Canterbury Tales, The Book of Margery Kempe, and Piers Plowman as models of the way in which a medieval text's unique tradition influenced its transition from manuscript to print. The forces of the Reformation era did not produce the same effect across the varied textual legacy of the Middle Ages. Every text that made the transition from manuscript to print brought with it a set of concerns, a tendency to address a particular readership in particular ways, a physical presence developed in manuscript culture, all of which might shape the pathways by which a text might arrive in print, and what it might look like when it got there. This study follows The Canterbury Tales, The Book of Margery Kempe, and Piers Plowman from their circulation in manuscript to their presentation in print, in order to track how each of them survived the metamorphosis of the relationship between writers and readers as the new technology was introduced. Taken together, the three case studies demonstrate to scholars of any medieval literature the variety of possible impacts made when texts composed in manuscript culture were prepared for printing. The great force exerted by the technological and cultural developments of the English Reformation, not least the more centralized legislative regulation of the press, has long been central to the study of the history of books. This volume takes into account the ways in which individual textual traditions pushed back or accelerated the forces of early modern reform, producing their own plural reformations.‎

‎Making of the Vernon Manuscript, The Production and Contexts of Oxford, Bodleian Library, MS Eng. poet. a. 1‎

‎, Brepols - Harvey Miller, 2013 Hardcover. XL 334 p., 62 b/w ill. 41 colour ill., 2 b/w tables, 156 x 234 mm, Languages: English, Latin, French, Including an index. Fine copy. ISBN 9782503530468.‎

‎The Vernon Manuscript, the largest and arguably the most important Middle English anthology, is examined in its entirety in this ground-breaking, interdisciplinary study. This volume addresses important questions in late medieval book production and the history of the medieval book through original and substantial studies of one of the most remarkable surviving examples. The Vernon Manuscript, carefully copied and lavishly decorated around 1390-1400 for pious users, is famous as the largest and arguably the most important Middle English anthology. Its sheer size and conservation concerns mean that up to now it has been little studied as a book. The essays in this volume exploit for the first time the mass of new data generated by the Vernon Manuscript Project. Specialists in art history, bibliography, codicology, historical linguistics, and palaeography have been commissioned to interrogate this material from their various disciplinary perspectives. The result is a ground-breaking interdisciplinary volume which sheds new light on an iconic medieval book and on a transitional period of innovation and experimentation in vernacular book production.‎

‎Probable Truth Editing Medieval Texts from Britain in the Twenty-First Century‎

‎, Brepols - Harvey Miller, 2013 Hardcover. XIV 549 p., 9 b/w ill., 14 b/w tables, 156 x 234 mm, Languages: English, Latin, Middle English, Including an index. Fine copy. ISBN 9782503536835.‎

‎How do the best editorial procedures of the past get transmitted to the future? In this volume a distinguished line-up of hugely experienced editors, and younger scholars actively grapple with these issues. Editing as an academic mode of work has had a variable ?press? - it is often seen as just plumbing. But without editions no historian of whatever critical persuasion could operate. Texts that are not edited are effectively invisible. The advent of electronic means of text production has also raised new possibilities and new problems that need to be openly considered rather than ignored. The papers in this volume reflect those concerns, and explore the ways forward. How do the best editorial procedures of the past get transmitted to the future? A distinguished line-up of experienced editors and younger scholars actively grappling with these issues reflect on their engagement with the challenges of textual theory and editorial practice. No single solution emerges as applicable to all texts and for all editions; the individual characteristics of each text and its transmission, together with the intended audience of each edition, emerge as primary areas for consideration.‎

‎Gathering of Medieval English Recipes‎

‎, Brepols - Harvey Miller, 2008 Hardcover. 170 p., 160 x 240 mm, Languages: English, Middle English, Including an index. Fine copy. ISBN 9782503528984.‎

‎This book is a collection of medieval English culinary recipes which have not been edited before. Some of them come from brief collections which have not been previously published, or are found in isolation or very small groups in manuscripts which do not contain such collections. Others come from collections which have been used, or viewed, primarily for collation, but which contain other recipes which had not yet been noted. It was the author's object to gather together all the recipes which had not been edited and published, or are not currently being edited by others, to make the record of English recipes of this period as complete as possible. The volume concludes with a supplement to the recently published Concordance of English Recipes: Thirteenth Through Fifteenth Centuries, adding all the "new" recipes to that Concordance, except for a few which are so fragmentary as not to deserve listing.‎

‎Late Middle English 'Lucydarye'‎

‎, Brepols - Harvey Miller, 2013 Hardcover. XL 141 p., 156 x 234 mm, Languages: English, Middle French, Middle English, Including an index. Fine copy. ISBN 9782503540825.‎

‎This book offers the reader a textual comparison of the 14th-century French Second Lucidaire and the late Middle English translation Lucydarye. The Lucydarye is a late Middle English manual of popular instruction, largely religious in its orientation, though including lengthy discussions of witchcraft, demonology, and meteorological phenomena. There is a strong interest in pastoral instruction. Set in the form of a dialogue between a magister and his discipulus, it is an over-literal translation of a fourteenth-century French text known as the Second Lucidaire, itself a free adaptation of the Latin Elucidarium, traditionally attributed to Honorius Augustodunensis (Honorius of Autun). The translation is the work of one Andrew Chertsey. The Middle English text, edited here for the first time (from a Wynkyn de Worde print), bears striking similarities to other, popular works of an encyclopaedic nature, notably Sydrak and Bokkus and the Pricke of Conscience. Equally, there are many points in common with the sermon literature of the time. The Lucydarye is printed alongside the French source so as to allow the reader both to appreciate points of obscurity in the text and to observe Chertsey's translation technique. A discussion of the relationship between the Lucydarye and the various versions of the Second Lucidaire throws some light on the complicated textual tradition of the French prints‎

‎, Brepols - Harvey Miller, 2008 Hardcover. XVI 223 p., 80 b/w ill., 165 x 240 mm, Languages: Italian, French, English, Including an index. Fine copy. ISBN 9782503528465.‎

‎, Verso, 1998 Paperback, 191 pages, ENG, 215 x 135 mm, in good condition, . ISBN 9781859842171.‎

‎Terry Eagleton is one of the most important - and most radical - theorists writing today. His witty and acerbic attacks on contemporary culture and society are read and enjoyed by many, and his studies of literature are regarded as classics of contemporary criticism. In this new edition of his groundbreaking treatise on literary theory, Eagleton seeks to develop a sophisticated relationship between Marxism and literary criticism. Ranging across the key works of Raymond Williams, Lenin, Trostsky, Brecht, Adorno, Benjamin, Lukacs and Sartre, he develops a nuanced critique of traditional literary criticism, while producing a compelling theoretical account of ideology. Eagleton uses this perspective to offer fascinating analyses of canonical writers, including George Eliot, Charles Dickens, Joseph Conrad, Henry James, T.S. Eliot, W.B. Yeats, James Joyce and D.H. Lawrence. However, he distances himself from a simplistic application of Marxist categories and shows how ideology can play a productive and subversive role in their work.‎

‎Two remarkable Iranian world-maps were discovered in 1989 and 1995. Both are made of brass and date from 17th-century Iran. Mecca is at the centre and a highly sophisticated longitude and latitude grid enables the user to determine the direction and distance to Mecca for anywhere in the world between Andalusia and China. Prior to the discovery of these maps it was thought that such cartographic grids were conceived in Europe ca. 1910. This richly-illustrated book presents an overview of the ways in which Muslims over the centuries have determined the sacred direction towards Mecca (qibla) and then describes the two world-maps in detail. The author shows that the geographical data derives from a 15th-century Central Asian source and that the mathematics underlying the grid was developed in 9th-century Baghdad.‎

‎This large room is one of the most famous of the Uffizi, being displayed some of the greatest works by Sandro Botticelli. Among the many paintings, two have entered the collective visual imagination as the essence of the Renaissance: The Birth of Venus (c. 1484) and The Spring (c. 1482). These masterpieces are permeated by mysterious associations not completely deciphered yet. Botticelli moved in the Neo-Platonic Academy where Lorenzo de? Medici, called the Magnificient, had brought together the intellectual elite of the late XV century Florence. The Greek philosopher Plato came back to the fore during the Renaissance, thanks to the numerous translations of ancient books. Neoplatonism tried to blend Plato?s philosophy with Christianity. According to this new way of conceiving reality, man is free to choose God and matter and spiritual uplifting can only be achieved through love, harmony and ideal beauty. During these years, Botticelli ?translated? the ideals of the Neoplatonic circle, with his distinctive refined and elegant style, in his paintings. Below is a beautiful and original composition by Thomas Schoenberger and vocal rendition by Marnie Breckenridge dedicated to Botticelli?s Annunciation, which you will also be able to admire in this large room.‎

‎Salvador Dal 's surrealist masterworks are admired worldwide for their eccentric metaphors. Far lesser known, though, are his fascinating writings, where he occupies himself with verve and in bewilderingly unrefined style with the human body and sexuality. The French art critic and writer Catherine Millet has studied Dal 's artistic oeuvre and his writings for years. Her essay is the expression of a very personal reading of his self-reflecting texts. This pivotal book explains Dal 's influence on his contemporary artist colleagues and reveals the narcissism, the constraints and the visual inventiveness of the most famous - and the most notorious - of the surrealists. The text is completed by rarely published photographs and paintings by Dal and others that illustrate Millet's ideas.‎

‎Volume 2 of "Cy Twombly Catalogue Raisonn of Drawings" covers the very fruitful years between 1956 and 1960. Still a resident of New York in 1956, Twombly moves to Italy in early 1957 where he will stay, with intervals, until the end of his life. His first shows in Galleria La Tartaruga in Rome, Galleria del Cavallino, Venice, and Galleria del Naviglio, Milan, make him well-known in European avant-garde circles. In the summer of 1959 he rents an apartment in the village of Sperlonga at the Tyrrhenian Sea between Rome and Naples. Here he creates his sequence "Poems to the Sea" influenced by Mallarm 's poetry. The year 1959 is also marked by the artist's marriage and the birth of his son Alessandro in December. His work is increasingly dealing with color, yielding most beautiful colored drawings. The influence of street graffiti, too, is evident in his work incorporating explicit sexual allusions and jokes. At the end of 1960 Cy Twombly has his first solo exhibition at the Leo Castelli Gallery in New York.‎

‎Released in conjunction with a 2008 exhibition. The title paraphrases American artist James McNeill Whistler, who said, "Paint should not be applied thick. It should be like breath on the the surface of a pane of glass." Catalog is accompanied by these articles: Painting Softly, An Introduction / Marc Simpson -- Whistler, Modernism, and the Creative Afflatus / Marc Simpson -- George Inness, Softness, and the Vapor Barrier / Leo G. Mazow -- True Illusions in Soft Paintings / Cody Hartley -- Materials for Immateriality / Joyce Hill Stoner -- The "Inaction Painters" and Their Moment / Michael J. Lewis -- Reflections on "The Color of Mood" / Wanda M. Corn. Simply stated, an exquisite book, and one that is worthy of any coffee table or personal library. Through an innovative manner of handling paint, a group of American artists around 1900 created deceptively simple canvases that convey images of shimmering transience, visions suggested rather than delineated. Focusing on this singular aesthetic characteristic, this catalogue explores this painterly phenomenon. This copy was once owned by interior and garden designer Henriette Suhr and carries her bookplate at front.‎

‎Sean Scully (born 1945) is among the greatest abstract painters of our age. He is also one of the most outspoken. Since the late 1960s, Scully's visual expressiveness has been matched by a verbal dynamism that is no less arresting than his art. Varying widely in form from brief reflections to essay-length meditations on artists such as Van Gogh, Morandi and Rothko, Scully's writings are distinguished by a brutal lyricism and an effortlessly aphoristic turn of phrase. The nearly 200 texts that comprise this collection provide a unique perspective on one of the most engaging artistic imaginations of the past half-century. Here, readers will discover the effusions of a mind tirelessly wrestling with the profoundest issues of art, cultural history and what it means to be a creator in the contemporary world. The texts are illustrated by images including facsimile reproductions of handwritten pages which also feature drawings.‎

‎The Irish-born artist Sean Scully has created a painterly oeuvre that, in this volume, reveals itself as vitally important in the ongoing dialogue about painting. Horizontal and vertical stripes are the sole motif in his work. He alternately groups strips of paint together and lays multiple stripes of color over one another, which produce visually irritating clashes. It is a working method that is revealed in the works themselves, in the places where these dueling lines meet; edges tell the story of process. The seemingly endless number of neutral stripes leave these paintings open to a variety of interpretations; they allow the viewers freedom to imprint their own visions on them. Usually in a large format, they recall landscapes, facades, buildings, and ornaments. Along with 254 color reproductions, this book includes a complete biography, several critical essays, and an illuminating interview with the artist. Sean Scully was born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1945. Since moving to the United States in the mid-1970s, Scully has taught at major institutions including Princeton University, received a Guggenheim Fellowship, and been the subject of a major touring exhibition organized by the High Museum in Atlanta in 1996. He is represented in virtually every major public collection of 20th-century art.‎

‎, Thames & Hudson, 2006 Hardcover, 256 pages, ENG, 305 x 230 mm, in Good condition, dustjacket, illustrated in colour / b/w. ISBN 9780500093351.‎

‎Dramatic depictions of human forms ? writhing painfully, dissolving, wrestling or engulfing one another, seated or in motion ? are ubiquitous in the work of Francis Bacon (1909-1992), one of the most eminent painters of the 20th century. Bacon portrayed the ordeal of the vulnerable, defencelessly exposed body like no other artist of his generation. His individuals are usually alone, isolated from their surroundings, trapped in empty, windowless rooms or behind the bars of cages. Bacon?s figures act on stage-like platforms, doubled over in torment, sliding into formlessness. By wiping, scratching and erasures, Bacon converted the picture surface into a field of perpetual activity ? and in the process, created images of great forcefulness, sensibility and beauty. Bacon found his models not only in the history of art, but also in photographs of athletes, soccer players, or boxers in combat. He also betrayed a strong interest in the photographic sequences through which Eadweard Muybridge, in the later 19th century, registered the phases of a path of animal movement. Such instinctively performed motions disclosed to Bacon actions of an original sensuality which he strove to capture in his pictures.‎

‎, Ludion, 2023 HB, 305 x 240 mm, 256 pages, ENG edition, NEW, dustjacket, illustrated in colours / b/w. ISBN 9789493039759.‎

‎Best known as a painter, Kerry James Marshall has also produced a vast graphic oeuvre that has been seldom seen and rarely documented. This catalog raisonn offers the first public account of his graphic work and is also the first in-depth study of the role of printed images and print processes in Marshall's work as a whole. One of the most important American contemporary artists, Kerry James Marshall is known for artworks that address the 'crisis of under-representation' of the black figure in the pictorial traditions of the Western world, from museums to comic books. His work has been widely celebrated in major museum retrospectives such as Kerry James Marshall: Painting and Other Stuff (Antwerp, Copenhagen, Barcelona, Madrid) in 2014 and Mastry (Chicago, New York, Los Angeles) in 2017, and through numerous awards, including a MacArthur Fellowship in 1997. An assiduous worker, he spent his youth acquiring time-honored skills of art - drawing and painting, but also wood engraving and printing. By his mid-twenties, he recalls, 'I could paint in egg tempera... I was good at printmaking. I could do woodcuts, etchings, aquatints. I knew all of those techniques.' Most of his prints have been produced not in professional print workshops, but by the artist, working alone in his studio. They range from images the size of postcards to his 50-foot-long, 12 panel woodcut Untitled (1998-99), to iterations of his ongoing magnum opus, Rythm Mastr. And while some have entered prominent museum collections, many exist only in private collections or the artist's archive and are unknown to the public. This catalog raisonn offers the first public account of these important works and the first in-depth study of the role of printed images and print processes in Marshall's work as a whole.‎

‎Britain's industrial age is often perceived through a black-and-white filter as the 'funereal' age of coal pollution and bleak working class slums. This catalogue will dispel that perception, demonstrating how the industrial revolution transformed colour, and focus on the central role it played in art, culture and technology As opposed to approaches favouring a long history of colour, the catalogue focuses on the second half of the 19th century and argues that this was a crucial chromatic turn, which has been significantly ignored by prominent historians of colour and previous publications Several essays in the catalogue offer new research into key chromatic events of the period including the 1862 International Exhibition Accompanies an exhibition at the Ashmolean Museum from 21 September 2023 to 18 February 2024 Contrary to the monochrome vision of Queen Victoria's mourning dresses and the coal-polluted streets of Charles Dickens' London, Victorian Britain was, in fact, a period of new and vivid colours. The Industrial Revolution had transformed the Victorians' perception of colour and, over the course of the second half of the 19th century, it became the key signifier of modern life. Colour Revolution: Victorian Art, Fashion & Design charts the Victorians' new attitudes to colour through a multidisciplinary exploration of culture, technology, art and literature. The catalogue explores key 'chromatic' moments that inspired Victorian artists and writers to think anew about the materiality of colour. Rebelling against the bleakness of the industrial present, these figures learned from the sacred colours of the past, the sumptuous colours of the Middle East and Japan and looked forward towards the decadent colours that defined the end of the century.‎

‎Britain under the reign of the Tudors and Stuarts was a country marked by extraordinary and dramatic change. These were the centuries of the Reformation, civil wars, and two revolutions; a time of upheaval that saw the trials and executions of two monarchs, two wives of a king, and two Archbishops of Canterbury; and a time of religious controversy that resulted in the torture or burning of hundreds of ordinary people. But this was also the time that saw an explosion of literacy and the printed word, transformations in landscapes and townscapes, new forms of wealth, new structures of power, and new forms of political participation that freed minds and broadened horizons in the generations from 1485 to 1689. In this exciting and richly illustrated new work, eighteen leading scholars explore the political, social, religious, and cultural history of this tumultuous time. From the maneuverings of rulers and powerbrokers, both religious and secular, to the profound social and cultural changes that affected the lives of ordinary men and women throughout Britain--indeed, throughout the world--The Oxford Illustrated History of Tudor and Stuart Britain offers the most authoritative history of this great age ever published.‎

‎Murad Ali Baig questions, not the importance of faith, but the capturing of all religions by the vested interests of professional priests claiming to be God?s sole selling agents leading to distortions, superstitions and religiosity that the founding sages would have abhorred. He analyzes the patrons of religion ? the founding prophets, apostles, priests, rulers and the rich ? and the common people whose offerings make the places of worship so rich. Murad provides interesting insights into how people the world over, especially in India, have been influenced by geography, sources of food, technological change, trade and by political and religious forces. He presents provocative questions and answers allowing readers to draw their own conclusions. Writing on religion can be volatile but fortunately he cannot be accused of prejudice when his answers equally impact Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Buddhists, Sikhs and others.‎

‎, The Weiss Gallery, 2010 Paperback, 107 pages, ENG., 305 x 250 x 10 mm, NEW condition ! illustrated in colour / b/w, in a sturdy case. ISBN X.‎

‎The various essays in this book, which commences with a concise synopsis of Lanier's life by his biographer Michael Wilson, offer many differing and fascinating insights and interpretations of one of the most remarkable paintings ever to be produced in Jacobean England. For an English portrait dated 1613, it is truly without precedent both in its quality and composition and for the window that it opens upon the culture and connoisseurship of the day. Both Sir Roy Strong and Dr Duncan Thomson in their respective essays propose alternative attributions, but as yet a question mark must still remain as to the painting's authorship. Thomson also discusses Lanier's surprisingly extensive iconography, which convincingly confirms the identification that was perceptively first proposed for our portrait by the late Sir Oliver Millar. Further essays by Jeremy Woods, Tim Wilks and Benjamin Hebbert explore the intriguing ancillary elements that give this painting so much of its extraordinary allure, whilst the respective essays of Peter Walls and Katherine Ara explain Lanier's influence on Jacobean court music and the actual painting's techincal construction and preservation.‎

‎Susan Whyman draws on a hidden world of previously unknown letter writers to explore bold new ideas about the history of writing, reading and the novel. Capturing actual dialogues of people discussing subjects as diverse as marriage, poverty, poetry, and the emotional lives of servants, The Pen and the People will be enjoyed by everyone interested in history, literature, and the intimate experiences of ordinary people. Based on over thirty-five previously unknown letter collections, it tells the stories of workers and the middling sort - a Yorkshire bridle maker, a female domestic servant, a Derbyshire wheelwright, an untrained woman writing poetry and short stories, as well as merchants and their families. Their ordinary backgrounds and extraordinary writings challenge accepted views that popular literacy was rare in England before 1800. This democratization of letter writing could never have occurred without the development of the Royal Mail. Drawing on new information gleaned from personal letters, Whyman reveals how the Post Office had altered the rhythms of daily life long before the nineteenth century. As the pen, the post, and the people became increasingly connected, so too were eighteenth-century society and culture slowly and subtly transformed.‎

‎David Hockney: Normandy Portraits accompanies a major exhibition on David Hockney at the National Portrait Gallery, London. It reveals new portraits painted in Hockney's Normandy Studio between 2020 and 2022. David Hockney: Normandy Portraits illustrates around 40 acrylic on canvas works painted by Hockney at his Normandy studio - depicting his friends and visitors, as well as the artist himself. This image-led book product will showcase a series of some previously unseen portraits, through 48 pages, uninterrupted by text, to allow readers to engage directly with the artworks. These works highlight the ongoing importance of portraiture within the artist's practice and demonstrate his sentiment that 'drawings and paintings . are a lot better than photographs to give you a sense of the person'. Hockney returned to painting after an intensive period spent depicting the Normandy landscape using an iPad. The portraits were painted quickly and directly onto the canvas without under drawing. As Hockney has said 'to do a portrait slowly is a bit of a contradiction'.‎

‎King Alfred the Great (r. 871-899) remains a key figure in English literary history. Although his reputation as a scholar who was personally responsible for the translation of a number of Latin works is no longer secure, the figure of the wise king nevertheless casts a long shadow over vernacular writing from the late ninth century through to the twelfth. This volume takes stock of recent developments and debates in the field of Alfredian scholarship and showcases new directions in research. Individual chapters consider how English authors before, during, and after Alfred's reign translated and adapted Latin works, often in innovative and imaginative ways. Other contributions provide new contexts and connections for Alfredian writing, highlighting the work of Mercian scholars and expanding the corpus beyond the works traditionally attributed to the king himself. Together, these essays force us to rethink what we mean by 'Alfredian' and to revise the literary history of the 'long ninth century'.‎

‎, Brepols, 2024 Hardback, 460 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:10 b/w, Language: English. ISBN 9782503606026.‎

‎Summary Published anonymously in 1733, Memoirs of the Twentieth Century is one of the earliest futuristic novels known in Anglophone and Euro-American literature. It foregrounds an acceleration of history brought about by an increasing degree of global interconnectedness, and the exclusion of prophetism and astrology as credible ways to know the future. The work of Samuel Madden, an Irish writer and philanthropist of Whig sympathies, it consists of a collection of diplomatic letters composed in the 1990s, which the narrator claims were brought to him from the time to come by a supernatural entity. Through these correspondences, twentieth-century world scenarios are spread out before the reader, in which British naval power rules the waves and international commerce, while the transnational scheming of the Jesuits threatens the independence of weaker European courts. This book - which includes a study followed by an annotated edition of the text - assesses the cultural significance of this literary work, as an apt observatory on how historical time as a cultural construction was shaped, during the eighteenth century, by new forms of transnational circulation of information, and by the dubious space carved out in European culture by seventeenth- and early eighteenth-century debates on the nature of historical knowledge. Through and by means of the Memoirs case study, this volume aims to contribute to a wider cultural history of the future and speculative fiction. The novel's ironic distancing of beliefs considered to be superstitious and absurd - such as divination techniques and occult and magical disciplines - offers an exceptional testimony to the negotiation of the boundaries of verisimilitude and credibility within a religious enlightenment. ‎Summary This book sheds new light on the Latin background of various Old English homilies, and of certain homilies from related vernacular traditions. Two broad themes are treated, the Nativity of Christ and Christian eschatology; the volume contains five Latin texts dealing with each theme. Critical editions, full English translations, and detailed introductions and commentaries are included, as well as case studies that demonstrate the relevance of each text to one or more homilies written in Old English, and, in a few cases, early Middle English and Old Norse. While the volume is intended for scholars of early English preaching, many of the texts hold considerable intrinsic interest and should have general appeal for medievalists, students of preaching, and those working on the transmission of biblical apocrypha in the Latin West. This book offers a new comprehensive critical edition of Constable's sonnets. Along with an updated biography and a study of the sonnet collections, the introduction provides an authoritative revision of the canon of Constable's poetry and an overview of its critical reception. ‎Without Hands - The Art of Sarah Biffin‎

‎, Paul Holberton Publishing Ltd, 2022 Softcover, 104 pages, ENG. edition, 250 x 195 mm, NEW , illustrated in color / b/w. ISBN 9781913645366.‎

‎Overview A celebration of an artist whose under-sung legacy testifies to the enduring power of originality, drive, and devotion. Accompanying an exhibition at Philip Mould & Company, Without Hands presents the art of Sarah Biffin. Biffin (1784-1850) was born with phocomelia, a condition described on her baptism record as "born without arms and legs." After learning to sew and write as a child, Biffin joined a traveling sideshow where she painted in front of an audience. Eventually, she rose to fame as a talented miniaturist, signing many of her works "without hands." Despite her prolific output, including commissions from royalty and exquisitely detailed self-portraits, Biffin's work has been overlooked by art historians. Beautifully illustrated and including original research, Without Hands celebrates Biffin as an artist who challenged contemporary attitudes to disability.‎

‎Saints' Lives for Medieval English Nuns, I. A Study of the 'Lyves and Dethes' in Cambridge University Library, MS Additional 2604‎

‎, Brepols, 2023 Hardback, xxxii + 398 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:24 b/w, 8 col., 5 tables b/w., Language: English. ISBN 9782503545516.‎

‎Summary Cambridge University Library, MS Additional 2604 contains a unique prose legendary almost entirely of female saints, all of whom are virgins, martyrs, or nuns. The manuscript, which also has varied post-medieval items, is written in one hand probably dating from c. 1480 to c. 1510. This previously unstudied Middle English collection features twenty-two universal and native saints, both common (like John the Baptist and thelthryth) and rare (such as Wihtburh and Domitilla). These texts are dependent on a complex mixture of Latin sources and analogues. Specific linguistic and art-historical features, as well as attention to the predominant female saints of Ely and post-medieval provenance, suggest an East Anglian convent for the original readership. Through an exploration of the manuscript and its later ownership (both recusant and antiquarian), a discussion of its linguistic attributes, a consideration of local female monastic and book history, a comparison of hagiographical texts, and a wide-ranging source and analogue study, this Study fully contextualises these Middle English lives. The book concludes with a survey of the structural and stylistic aspects of the texts, followed by three appendices, and an extensive bibliography. The texts are edited for the first time in its companion volume, Saints' Lives for Medieval English Nuns, II: An Edition of the 'Lyves and Dethes' in Cambridge University Library, MS Additional 2604. TABLE OF CONTENTS Preface I. The Manuscript II. Language and Dialectal Provenance III. Convent and Geographical Location IV. Hagiographical Context and the Selection of Saints V. ‎World Art : Themes of Unity in Diversity : Acts of the XXVIth International Congress of the History of Art.‎

‎, Penn State University Press, 1990 Hardcover, 3 Volumes; 265 + 535 + 893 = 1693 pages, In very Good condition, illustrated dustjackets, Language = 90 pct. English + partly French, Italian , German., images / illustrations in b/w. .290 x 225 x 75 mm; ISBN 9780271006079.‎

‎Under the sponsorship of the Comit International d?Histoire de l?Art (CIHA), scholars from 31 countries met in August in Washington, DC, to present papers and discuss the subject of the Congress. The CIHA was created by a group of scholars meeting in Vienna in 1873 to exchange results of research, discuss aspects of the theory of the history of art, and encourage international discourse. CIHA has since sponsored congresses at intervals of three or five years. Until now CIHA focused on European art from Constantine to the present, whereas the XXXVIth Congress, in a critical shift, encompassed the history of art from all periods and places. The seven sessions deal with broad themes that transcend cultural differences and are uniquely perceptible through the discipline of art history. Center and Periphery: Dissemination and Assimilation of Style examines the processes whereby local styles may be formed by ?dissemination? from a dominant cultural center and, conversely, those which form a cosmopolitan style by the ?assimilation? of disparate local tradition. Conceptual Designs: Diagrams and Geometric Patterns discusses form and meaning in diagrams and geometric patterns used as independent compositions or as ?incidental? ornament. The Written Word in Art and as Art explores the relationship between what is written and how it is written, and the contribution of both to an understanding of the work as a whole. The Artist is concerned with significant developments in the history of the artist?s self-consciousness. Art and Ritual examines the contribution of the study of ritual to an understanding of the form and meaning of a work of art, and vice versa. Art and National Identity in the Americas looks at the problems of regional and national self-definition in the art of North, Central, and South America, from the European conquests to the present. Preserving the World Art discusses the history and theory of conservation and restoration of works of art and their settings. Each session was chaired and its program determined by two distinguished scholars from widely divergent fiends, ensuring a broad and varied approach to the subject. Following introductory essays by the Chairs, the papers represent a selection of the best contribution by art historians as well as scholars in other disciplines. Included as well are plenary addresses by three international leaders in the field, Hermann Fillitz, Andr Chastel, and George Kubler.‎

‎Old English Poetry from Manuscript to Message‎

‎, Brepols, 2024 Hardback, xviii + 398 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:2 b/w, 14 tables b/w., Language: English. ISBN 9782503600314.‎

‎Summary By comparison with Latin Europe, Anglo-Saxon civilization is notable for the amount of literature preserved in contemporary manuscripts in the vernacular language, formerly called ?Anglo-Saxon' but now more usually called ?Old English'. This literature includes some remarkable poetry, which is the subject of the present collection of essays. Some of the earliest poems may well have been written at a time when northern England held the intellectual leadership of Europe. The approach is holistic, investigating important issues in the manuscripts that affect the integrity of the texts to be studied or the way they relate to each other, examining metrical issues that affect the way the poems are appreciated for their compositional skill, studying particular textual problems that require elucidation or even emendation to make the meaning clear, and finally offering readings of particular poems focussing on themes that are central to Old English poetry. A postscript examines Lewis Carroll's Jabberwocky, which is presented as a ?Stanza of Anglo-Saxon Poetry'. TABLE OF CONTENTS Introduction Section A: Manuscripts Foreword 1.
