Crossing Cultures: Conflict, Migration, and Convergence. Proceedings of the 32nd International Congress of the History of Art

A very thick in-4 book of 276 x 194 mm for (6) vii, xvii, 1108 pp. Coal black hardbinding, title in bronze on the cover and spine, abstract in bronze on the back cover. Printed on couché paper, profusely illustrated with a majority color images. No dust jacket as issued. "Crossing Cultures: Conflict, Migration and Convergence is an in-depth examination of the effect of globalism on art and art history. Covering all aspects of art—including traditional media, painting, sculpture, architecture and the crafts, as well as design, film, visual performance and new media—it explores the themes of conflict, migration and convergence in the visual, symbolic and artistic exchanges between cultures throughout history. Crossing Cultures is a compilation of the conference papers from the 32nd International Congress in the History of Art organized by the International Committee of the History of Art (CIHA), edited by conference convenor Professor Jaynie Anderson. This volume contains more than 200 papers presented at the congress by art historians from twenty-five countries, including Homi K Bhabha (Harvard University), Michael Brand (Director of the John Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles), Marcia Langton (Chair of Australian Indigenous Studies, University of Melbourne), Ronald de Leeuw (Director of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam), Neil McGregor (Director of the British Museum, London) and Ruth B. Phillips (Canada Research Chair in Modern Culture and Professor of Art History, Carleton University, Ottawa). Never before has the state of art history in our polycentric world been demonstrated so well. Crossing Cultures encourages fresh thinking about global art history." (Abstract)

Lord Northbourne
Look To The Land
London, Dent, 1942. 190 x 130 mm, 186 pp. Hardcover with blue cloth, no jacket. Reprint of the 1940 edition. This is a rare copy of the war edition which, due to war restrictions, contains less paper than usual and shows the "Authorized Economy Standard" seal of approval on the first page. "In May 1940, Lord Northbourne’s book ‘Look to the Land’ appeared. He coined the term ‘organic farming’. His book stripped out the prolixity, abstruseness, esotericism and mysticism of Rudolf Steiner, and, with compelling clarity, Lord Northbourne presented a manifesto of organic agriculture. From this point on, biodynamics and organics have developed in parallel, with the general recognition of biodynamics as a particular manifestation of organic agriculture." (John Paull, "The Global Growth and Evolution of Organic Agriculture", p. 5) "Lord Northbourne (1896-1982) was a man of exceptional vision, who already in the 1940s diagnosed in detail the sickness of modern society as stemming from the severance of its organic links with the wholeness of life. A leading figure in the early organic farming movement, his writings profoundly affected such other pioneers as Sir Albert Howard, Rolf Gardiner, Ehrenfried Pfeiffer, and H. J. Massingham. His path led him on to a profound study of comparative religion, traditional metaphysics, and the science of symbols, which he employed in incisive observations on the character of modern society. His later writings exercised considerable influence on his younger contemporaries E. F. Schumacher and Thomas Merton, and in many ways anticipate the essays of Wendell Berry." (Later summary of the book by Angelico Press) Walter Ernest Christopher James, 4th Baron Northbourne (1896-1982) was a precursor of what is now known as organic agriculture. He translated to English several works by Perennialists or Traditionalists René Guénon, Fritschof Schuon and Titus Burckhardt, and contributed frequently to the quarterly journal Studies in Comparative Religions. According to Wikipedia, "Lord Northbourne's garden at Elizabethan Northbourne Court near Deal in Kent, set within the standing former outbuildings (the manor house burned in the 18th century) and upon ancient terracing, nurtured for a century, is reputed one of the finest in England; it is not generally open to the public."

Keith Haring
Keith Haring in Brazil: Booklet from a 2003 exposition of Keith Haring's works in Brazil
São Paulo / Brasília, Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil, 2003. Created for the first Keith Haring exhibition in Brazil where 55 of his artworks were shown. A colorful 180 x 140 mm booklet with a detail from one of Haring's Untitled painting and his name in white on the front cover and a youthful picture of Haring on the back. Softcover with jacket flaps. Bilingual, starts with texts in Portuguese and ends with the same texts in English. Features many black and white pictures of Keith Haring, many of his artworks and two texts: "Urban Radiance: reflections on the life and work of Keith Haring" by art historian Joshua Decter and "Keith Haring in Brazil" by his lifelong friend Kenny Scharf. "In the early 1980s, New York streets and subways were the first to showcase the work of Keith Haring, vigorous graffiti-like pictures indicative of his engagement with mass culture. Today, for the first time ever in Brazil, Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil showcases fifty-five works by this artist, including drawings and paintings. The exaltation of U.S. society never benumbed Haring's critical view regarding his environment or historical moment in time. Humor and wit pulsate in the spontaneously fluid linework if this artist whose freedom in handling themes and forms conquered space and contributed to the creation of a direct, and at times almost plain language rooted in the vocabulary of mass culture and means of consumption." Ralph Cintron
Democracy as Fetish
University Park (PA), The Pennsylvania State University Press, 2020. First edition. An octavo volume, 236 x 160 mm, 237 pp. Hardcover with no dust jacket, just as published. Two black and white illustrations. "Democracy has long been fetishized. Consequently, how we speak about democracy and what we expect from democratic governance are at odds with practice. With unflinching resolve, this book probes the theory of democracy and how the left and right are fascinated by it. In this innovative multidisciplinary study, Ralph Cintron provides sustained analysis of our political discourse. He shows not only how the rhetoric of democracy produces strong desires for social order, global wealth, and justice but also how these desires cannot be satisfied. Throughout his discussion, Cintron includes ethnographic research from fieldwork conducted over the course of twenty years in the Latino neighborhoods of Chicago, where he observes both citizens and the undocumented looking to democracy to fulfill their highest aspirations. Politicians hand out favors to the elite, developers strong-arm aldermen, and the disenfranchised have little redress. The problem, Cintron argues, is that the conditions required to put democracy into practice—territory, a bordered nation-state, citizens, property—are constituted by inequality and violence, because there is no inclusivity that does not also exclude. Drawing on ethnography, economics, political theory, and rhetorical analysis, Cintron makes his case with tremendous analytic rigor. This challenge to reassess the discourses on democracy and to consider democratic politics as always compromised by oligarchy will be of particular interest to political and rhetorical theorists."

David Felix
America Rising: Power and Political Economy in the First Nation
New Brunswick (NJ), Transaction Publishers, 2009. First edition. Octavo, 235 x 160 mm, (xiii) 265 pp. Hardcover with dust jacket. "The United States became a great power in the last quarter of the nineteenth century and a superpower during World War II without quite knowing it. Few Americans fully appreciate the fact today. How many people know that in recent years we have had 250,000 troops in 700 bases around the world? Consider our recent history of military operations in the Caribbean, East Asia, the Far East, Middle East, Southeast Asia, Africa, and the Balkans. In America Rising, David Felix attempts to explain how and why America became a superpower by examining the political and economic factors that have driven its ascendance and their relationship throughout history. Felix begins with the dawn of America, showing how America amassed wealth and political power from the start through wars, assertions of economic might, and the creation of a cultural and philosophical base. The nation began with a political order, derived from our British origins, which enabled our pragmatic culture to take advantage of the vast wealth of a near-virgin continent. Political and economic freedom were paired, authority yielding to both freedoms. Our farmers and businessmen were dreamers, manufacturing realities out of those dreams. Felix's account then makes a point of neoclassical economics as an anvil on which to hammer out a sharper sense of the content of our existence. This book, which demonstrates the author's zest for historical analysis and great story-telling ability, points to the central fact of a rising America--the intensely energizing interaction between polity and economy. The United States is the greatest power in world history, but the rise of another great power, China, is beginning to be increasingly apparent. One trusts that, drawing upon its deep resources, America will remember its history and traditions and continue as a superpower." (Front and back flap)

Original burgundy half-leather, raised bands, author's name, title and vol. number stamped in gold on the spine, marbled endpapers. A History of the Reform Bills of 1866 and 1867 was acknowledged by the author as a partisan Liberal work. It was brought out in time for the 1868 United Kingdom General Election. Arts in the Week of '22 [1922]
São Paulo, BM&F, 1992. Revised edition. In English. One hardcover volume, 285 x 225 mm, 254 pp. Illustrated dust jacket with flaps. Headbands. Printed on couché paper, well illustrated with black and white photographs and color prints of artworks, including a b&w photo of Victor Brecheret, Di Cavalcanti, Menotti del Picchia, Oswald de Andrade and Hélio Seelinger as frontispiece. Published as part of the celebration of the seventieth anniversary of the Modern Art Week of 1922. "This book has blazed new paths towards a comprehensive and fertile understanding. It was originally published in 1970 and now, after so many years, the abridged text of this edition still preserves a pioneering stamp that could only be achieved through sensitivity and a steadfast prospecting of sources. In the field of plastic arts, what would be the meaning of a cultural construction of Brazil? Would it imply highlighting certain subjects? The fundamental contribution of the modernists was precisely the fact that it posed the problem of national culture."

Amazonia by the Brazilian Embassy of London - #10
London, Dialogue Publications Ltd, 1976. in English. Rare 70s publication about the Amazon rainforest, few copies printed. "This is the tenth of a series of papers prepared by the Brazilian Embassy" after a few on the Brazilian development model, inflation control and economic growth, foreign policy, etc. A tall in-4 softcover booklet of 297 x 212 mm. 35 pp. Twelve chapters, many black-and-white pictures, colored maps of Brazil and the Amazon region. List of chapters: The World of the Amazon, the People of the Amazon, the Traditional Economy of Amazonia, the First seven years of the SUDAM project, the New Development Strategy of Polamazonia, the Free Zone of Manaus, the Amazonian Bank of BASA, Agriculture in Amazonia, New Roads in Amazonia, Modern Man in Amazonia, The Traveller in Amazonia and Science and the Amazon. "When the Brazilian Government launched 'Operation Amazonia' in 1966, it rekindled the country's concern for this vast region of forest and river. For most Brazilians, interest in Amazonia had faded since th collapse of the rubber boom and extravagant life that went with it in the early years of this century. But in the past ten years there has been a radical and continuing change in Amazonia's fortunes, the impact of which is already being felt. Today it is not only Brazilians who are interested in Amazonia. The Brazilian Embassy in London receives more requests for information about the region than about any other in the country. The booklet contains as much basic and up to date information on Amazonia as possible: it is intended to serve as a guide for those who are already acquainted with the region's resources and potentialities." This booklet is now almost impossible to find aside from a few higher learning libraries. Issued by a sovereign, developing country, while the rainforest was garnering interest yet had no political stakes as it does today.
