‎George Anson, Richard Walter [comp.]‎ ‎A Voyage Round the World in the Years MDCCXL, I, II, III, IV‎ ‎London, John and Paul Knapton in Ludgate Street, 1748. This is a subscriber copy, so the real first edition of Anson's book. A brick of a book with 215 x 260 mm, 80 mm thick. 33 unpaginated pp. at the beginning, 417 (2) pp. Contemporary thick binding of a deep purple hue, four nerves on the spine, three black title pieces with author's name, book title and year in gold print characters. Includes the list of subscribers, p. 319 incorrectly designated as p. 219, two pages of instructions to the binder at the end of the book. With 42 copper plates: 14 maps and 28 engravings, all folding (38 having dimensions close to the book itself or to unfold horizontally and 3 being large folding maps). Comes with a sliding protective case. This is a copy of George Anson's account of his circumnavigation voyage. Complete with all the features which are often missing or signal a later edition. A lively tale of hardship, courage, curiosity, risk-taking and doing the impossible: overtaking Spain on the Peru coast, taking a Spanish galleon and completing the travel around the world with an awesome booty and an epic story to tell. The victory of Anson's Centurion launched the age of British dominance over the oceans and paved the way for a Victorian empire where "the sun never sets."‎ ‎The folding engraving facing p. 73 has some discrete tape repair on the margin and the engraving facing p. 201 has the very extremity of its margin starting to crumble. Aside from that, a very good copy. Avec ce livre, elle met au goût du jour le style épistolaire pratiqué en Angleterre par Richardson que l’abbé Prévost avait traduit avec beaucoup de succès. Ce premier roman est inspiré par une aventure personnelle de l’auteur. Persécutée par un mari violent et débauché, l’acteur Antoine François Riccoboni qu’elle avait épousé en 1734, elle l’avait quitté en 1755. “M. Boissonade a révélé cette particularité connue de peu de personnes, les lettres de Fanny Butler, données sous forme d’un roman, doivent leur origine à une liaison d’amour très réelle, et furent adressées à M. de Maillebois, dont elle était folle, et qui la quitta fort brusquement.” Gay II, 827.À la suite est relié un autre roman épistolaire de madame Riccoboni : Lettres de Milady Juliette Catesby à Milady Henriette Campley, son amie. A slim booklet of 140 x 215 mm, 86 pp. Title and author name written in green on the front cover and spine. A piece of paper with the editor's newer address has been glued over the original editor information on the title page. Three chapters: The Parasite, The Biological Jew, The Shabez Goy. A friend of the poet and political thinker Ezra Pound, author of books such as The Federal Reserve Conspiracy (1971) and The World Order: A Study in the Hegemony of Parasitism (1985), Eustace Mullins (1923-2010) started life as a serious flâneur or self-taught man: he quickly became a renowned painter, a painting restorer, had a stint as a US Air Force pilot and worked as a consultant, researcher and editor. Later on he started to pull the curtain of mainstream narratives and embarked in a life of thoughtcrimes. Many of his titles are still in print today and are considered more relevant than ever.‎ ‎A rare first edition of one of Mullins' most polemical essays. Trimmed of the wordiness of his further books, void of esoteric ramblings, The Biological Jew rather looks like a sociobiology research with no strings attached to any cult. This book is not an encyclopaedia of the institutions of the American Republic, even though it may look like it is. Actually, James Bryce talks about the real workings of the institutions: parties, bosses, the spoil system and the public opinion. It shows an America already different from what the mere Constitution says. He compares the British monarchy with the American federal republic, the democratic versus lord elites and the centralization vs local power dynamics. By doing so, James Bryce predates the sociology of Robert Mitchels and Max Weber while maintaining the magnitude and depth of a true treatise. An analytical tour de force, worthy of a serious Americana collection.‎ ‎Light rubbing on some of the edges, the hinge of the 1st volume front cover is a bit frail, robust binding, interior is clean and in very good condition. Black and white portrait of Dag Hammarskjold in frontispiece. Numerous black and white and color pictures throughout. Text printed on two columns. With forewords by U. Thant, then UN secretary-general, and Andrew W. Cordier, under-secretary. Five chapters: 1. Proceedings of the 14th Session of the General Assembly about the Ford Foundation Gift, 2. Proceedings of the 16th Session of the General Assembly about the naming of the library, 3. Dediication of the Dag Hammarskjold Library, 4. The Library Symposium, 5. The Library Building. This library was made possible by a $6.2 million gift by the Ford Foundation in 1959. The building, a modern-style construction, was designed to host over 400.000 books with ample space. This UN Library was named in honor of Dag Hammarskjold (not to be confused with Ragnar Danneskjold!), late secretary of the United Nations. This book was the honorary publication of the UN celebrating the opening of the library. It was NOT sold to bookshops or resellers, only given to various UN members and public libraries worldwide and finding a copy for sale is a rare event.‎ ‎NOT an ex-library book.
