Many empty pages left as "Memorandum" to be filled with notes. This now rare book is full of interesting recipes and tips. It features typical Brazilian dishes such as broinhas, Bahia patties or cheese tartlets as well as English or even French dishes. "Born in 1933, Li Mu, pseudonym of Dr. Yeung Chi Bor, is a Chinese-Brazilian doctor and acupuncturist. He grew up in the Chinese province of Guangdong under the Chinese Communist Regime. Targeted by the authorities as 'landlords', Yeung and his family were persecuted, defamed, tortured, and had their possessions confiscated. His father was executed and he was sent to labor camps. Throughout his struggle for survival, Yeung bore witness to one of the worst atrocities in history. He ultimately escaped as a refugee into Hong Kong in 1962 and, in 1977, made a great leap into the unknown, immigrating to Brazil at the age of 44. Dr. Yeung has three daughters and one son, and lives with his wife in the Brazilian city of Belo Horizonte, in the state of Minas Gerais."

Colored endpapers, no original cover, photograph of President Rodrigues Da Fonseca in frontispiece. Many photographic pictures printed on a different, whiter paper facing the text. Folding table p. 23. This book belonged to the library of the Laboratório Nacional de Análises. Two red library stamps, one on the first page and one on the last, the latter featuring another library stamp with a pen note. A concise yet detailed snapshot on the rubber industry in Brazil right before the First World War began. The author of this book is the father of Newton Carneiro (1914-1987), a Brazilian politician who was elected deputy for the state of Curitiba and led sections of the Rotary Club and Alliance Française.

"William Taliaferro Close (June 7, 1924 – January 15, 2009) was an American surgeon who played a major role in stemming a 1976 outbreak of the Ebola virus in Zaire, the first major outbreak of the viral hemorrhagic fever in Central Africa, and preventing its further spread. He was also the father of Oscar-nominated actress Glenn Close and husband of Bettine Moore Close." This is a series of orchestra conductor's profiles sorted by alphabetical order. An interesting, perhaps even encyclopedical reading for the connoisseurs of classical music. Cloth shows some defect at the bottom of the spine and front cover, some foxing on the first pages, otherwise a good copy. Other pages are clean and the binding is sturdy.

This book brings together five collections of texts linked to the person of Alexander Hamilton, founding father of the then very young Republic of the United States. Of note: a few letters by Aaron Burr, the man who killed Hamilton in a duel... "An American statesman, Alexander Hamilton (January 11, 1755 or 1757 – July 12, 1804) was an influential interpreter and promoter of the American Constitution, as well as the founder of the nation's financial system, the Federalist Party, the United States Coast Guard, and The New York Post newspaper. As the first Secretary of the Treasury, Hamilton was the principal author of the economic policies of George Washington's administration. He initiated the financing of state debts by the federal government as well as the creation of a national bank, a system of tariffs, and friendly trade relations with Great Britain. His vision included a strong central government led by a vigorous executive branch, a strong commercial economy, with a national bank and support for manufacturing, and a strong military. This vision was challenged by the more agrarian Founding Fathers of Virginia, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, who formed a rival party. They favored strong states based in rural America and protected by relevant state militias rather than a strong national army and navy. They denounced Hamilton as too pro-Britain and the monarchy in general, and too oriented toward cities, businesses, and banks. This volume was published the same year that Hamilton died in the duel with Aaron Burr." "Homme d'État américain, Alexander Hamilton (11 janvier 1755 ou 1757 - 12 juillet 1804) fut un interprète et un promoteur influent de la Constitution américaine, ainsi que le fondateur du système financier du pays, du Parti fédéraliste, de la Garde côtière américaine et du journal The New York Post. Premier secrétaire au Trésor, Hamilton fut le principal auteur des politiques économiques de l'administration de George Washington. "At the time of the voyage, Britain was at war with Spain. Richard Walter was the Chaplain of his Majesty's ship the Centurion commanded by Lord George Anson, which was sent on the mission to capture or disrupt possessions in the Pacific Ocean held by the Spanish Empire, during which the ship circumnavigated the world. Diseases caused a considerable loss of life; only 188 men survived of the 1,854 who started the voyage. Folding map of the Rio de la Plata. Stamp of the library of the "Sociedade Brasileira de Cultura Inglesa" with book number and the mention "1959" in blue ballpoint pen on the back of the first page of the preface. Preface, table of contents, numerous illustrations throughout the book, and an index of subscribers. The binding is in excellent condition, the slightly yellowish-gray paper is intact and entirely legible. This book recounts the ill-fated second voyage of the Duff, a missionary ship en route to the South Sea Islands in 1798. It was only the second attempt at a missionary voyage to the Pacific. A year earlier, the Duff had successfully undertaken its first voyage, settling members of the London Missionary Society and their families on the islands of Tahiti, Tonga, and the Marquesas. However, this second attempt ended in disastrous failure. Captured first by a French privateer who mistook the Duff for a ship carrying Governor King to Australia, and then again by a Portuguese fleet, the group was forced to return to Lisbon, and William Gregory returned to England in 1800. William Gregory describes the details of his treatment in captivity, life in Spanish America (Uruguay, Argentina, Paraguay), as well as indigenous life in the "enemy port" of Montevideo and the surrounding rich estuary of the Rio de la Plata, its "products, inhabitants, clothing, customs, commerce [and] religion." *************************************** Londres, T. Préface, table des matières, nombreuses illustrations tout au long du livre et index des souscripteurs. La reliure est en excellent état, le papier un peu jaune-gris intègre et entièrement lisible. Ce livre raconte le deuxième voyage malheureux du Duff, navire missionnaire en route vers les îles des mers du Sud en 1798. Ce n'était que la deuxième tentative de voyage missionnaire dans le Pacifique. Un an plus tôt, le Duff avait entrepris avec succès son premier voyage et abouti sur l'installation des membres de la London Missionary Society et de leurs familles sur les îles de Tahiti, de Tonga et les Marquises. En revanche, cette seconde tentative se soldera par un échec désastreux. Capturé d'abord par un corsaire français qui prit le Duff pour un navire emmenant le gouverneur King en Australie, puis une seconde fois par une flotte portugaise, le groupe fut contraint de retourner à Lisbonne et William Gregory regagnera l'Angleterre en 1800. William Gregory décrit les détails de son traitement en captivité, la vie en Amérique espagnole (Uruguay, Argentine, Paraguay) ainsi que la vie indigène dans le « port ennemi » de Montevideo et le riche estuaire environnant du Rio de la Plata, ses « produits, habitants, vêtements, coutumes, commerce [et] religion ».
