Granados, Enrique, 1867-1916 (music) and Fernando Periquet (lyrics). English Version by James Weldon Johnson, 1871-1938
Goyescas: An Opera in Three Tableaux
New York London Boston: G. Schirmer 1915. Apparent 1st ed. with Johnson translation no later printing information. Paperback. Good. 165p. Softcover in original wrapper. Illustration mounted on front. 31 cm. Ends of backstrip chipped as are lower corners of front cover. Minor creasing and corner wear. Hard to decipher circular rubber stamp on lower corner of front cover. "Distribuidores exclusivos para Colombia Casa Musical Humberto Conti Bogota .". stamped in black at bottom of title-page. Johnson had great success as a lyricist early in the century but found that tastes had changed when he attempted a return to song-writing in 1914. He translated the libretto for this opera which the Metropolitan Opera performed in 1916. Granados the Spanish Romantic composer of the piano pieces from which this opera was adapted attended the premiere but drowned in the English channel upon his return to Europe when a German submarine torpedoed the boat on which Granados was travelling. The libretto appears throughout the music in this edition with Granados's Spanish text immediately above Johnson's English translation. The libretto was also published separately by Schirmer in 1915 as a smaller-format 42-page pamphlet in their series of opera-librettos with Granados's Spanish text and Johnson's English translation appearing side by side in separate columns. We don't know whether either version has publishing priority but both are quite uncommon. G. Schirmer paperback

English Woman's Journal Company
Remove Obstacles to the Employment of Women 1860
1860. Women Employment J. B. Remarks on the Obstacles to the More General Employment of Women and on the Means of Removing Them. London: Published at the Office of the English Woman's Journal Company Limited 1860. First edition. 16 pages. Original paper wrappers. 8 1/4 x 5 1/4 in. A pamphlet supporting strategies for the expansion of women's employment opportunities. It outlines current obstacles to women's work such as hostility from male employees: "Women however cannot be employed in England in this manner because of the jealousy of their fellow workmen. If a master were to employ women in any part of the business the whole of his workmen would strike at once." The document also lists sad consequences of the current work climate: "Workhouses were found to be overcrowded with able-bodies females while charities were besieged with women praying to be provided either with employment or bread." Stain to upper left edge front. Toning to last page. Light pencil marks in margin. Very good condition. At the time that this description is being written just two copies are recorded in American institutions. OCLC search results are at best an estimate and can vary over time. unknown

This area was known in Europe as the Barbary Coast in reference to the Berbers. The main purpose of their attacks was to capture slaves for the Barbary slave trade. Slaves in Barbary could be of many ethnicities and of many different religions such as Christian Jewish or Muslim. Their predation extended throughout the Mediterranean south along West Africa's Atlantic seaboard and into the North Atlantic as far north as Iceland but they primarily operated in the western Mediterranean. In addition to seizing merchant ships they engaged in razzias raids on European coastal towns and villages mainly in Italy France Spain and Portugal but also in the British Isles the Netherlands and Iceland.

An action between an English ship and vessels of the Barbary Corsairs

While such raids began after the Muslim conquest of the Iberian Peninsula in the 710s the terms "Barbary pirates" and "Barbary corsairs" are normally applied to the raiders active from the 16th century onwards when the frequency and range of the slavers' attacks increased. In that period Algiers Tunis and Tripoli came under the sovereignty of the Ottoman Empire either as directly administered provinces or as autonomous dependencies known as the Barbary states. Similar raids were undertaken from Salé and other ports in Morocco.

A Sea Fight with Barbary Corsairs by Laureys a Castro c. 1681

Background: The Barbary corsairs were pirates and privateers who operated out of North Africa based primarily in the ports of Tunis Tripoli and Algiers. This area was known in Europe as the Barbary Coast in reference to the Berbers. Their predation extended throughout the Mediterranean south along West Africa's Atlantic seaboard and even to the eastern coast of South America with Brazil and into the North Atlantic Ocean as far north as Iceland but they primarily operated in the western Mediterranean. In addition to seizing ships they engaged in raids on European coastal towns and villages mainly in Italy France Spain and Portugal but also in England Scotland the Netherlands Ireland and as far away as Iceland. The main purpose of their attacks was to capture Europeans for the slave market in North Africa. The Barbary states were nominally part of the Ottoman Empire but in practice they were independent and the Ottoman government in Constantinople was not involved. Attacks:Since the 1600s the Barbary pirates had attacked British shipping along the North Coast of Africa holding captives for ransom or enslaving them. Ransoms were generally raised by families and local church groups. The British became familiar with captivity narratives written by Barbary pirates' prisoners and slaves. During the American Revolutionary War the pirates attacked American ships. On December 20 1777 Morocco's sultan Mohammed III declared that merchant ships of the new American nation would be under the protection of the sultanate and could thus enjoy safe passage into the Mediterranean and along the coast. The Moroccan-American Treaty of Friendship stands as America's oldest unbroken friendship treaty with a foreign power. In 1787 Morocco became one of the first nations to recognize the United States of America. Starting in the 1780s realizing that American vessels were no longer under the protection of the British navy the Barbary pirates had started seizing American ships in the Mediterranean. As the U.S. had disbanded its Continental Navy and had no seagoing military force its government agreed in 1786 to pay tribute to stop the attacks. On March 20 1794 at the urging of President George Washington Congress voted to authorize the building of six heavy frigates and establish the United States Navy in order to stop these attacks and demands for more and more money. The United States had signed treaties with all of the Barbary states after its independence was recognized between 1786 and 1794 to pay tribute in exchange for leaving American merchantmen alone and by 1797 the United States had paid out $1.25 million or a fifth of the government's annual budget then in tribute. These demands for tribute had imposed a heavy financial drain and by 1799 the U.S. was in arrears of $140000 to Algiers and some $150000 to Tripoli. Many Americans resented these payments arguing that the money would be better spent on a navy that would protect American ships from the attacks of the Barbary pirates and in the 1800 Presidential Election Thomas Jefferson won against incumbent second President John Adams in part by noting that the United States was "subjected to the spoliations of foreign cruisers" and was humiliated by paying "an enormous tribute to the petty tyrant of Algiers".
T Cadell. hardcover

Sixth Edition. 215 x 133 mm. 8 1/2 x 5 1/4". viii xl 376 pp.
Sympathetic light speckled half calf over marbled paper boards raised bands red and black morocco labels. With 54 hand-colored plates including frontispiece illustrating plants discussed in the text. A couple of ink corrections in a contemporary hand. Johnston 760. Variable foxing with perhaps a fourth of the text noticeably foxed but the plates almost entirely unaffected a few stains to the gutter from pressed flowers now absent other trivial defects but a perfectly readable copy with quite attractive plates in a pleasing virtually unworn retrospective binding.

First published as "The Useful Family Herbal" in 1764 this popular work provides a description of British plants helpful for at-home remedies. The highlight of the volume is the well-drawn and richly colored plates which Nissen tells us were drawn by the important natural history illustrator Sydenham Edwards 1769-1819 whose work DNB describes as "among the best scientific illustrations of the day." Hill 1716-75 was a perplexingly self-destructive personality who nevertheless managed to produce useful books. He was a surgeon an unsuccessful actor and an apothecary who made considerable money selling quack medicines; he published several books including some botanical works of substantial value like the present one and a steady series of usually abusive periodicals; he was constantly scheming to make money and to raise his reputation above its rightful altitude; and he was always embroiled in controversies because of his ungovernable proclivity toward impertinence and derision as well as his overweening vanity. This last quality together with Hill's direct attacks on Garrick and his friends prompted the latter's memorable epigram reflecting the doctor/actor's reputation among his detractors: "For physic and farces his equal there scarce is:/ His farces are physic his physic a farce is." After publishing some not insignificant scientific writings including a supplement to Chambers' "Dictionary" Hill tried to obtain admission to the Royal Society but his unprincipled character blocked any hope of membership. Despite his reputation "The Family Herbal" offered here in its sixth edition was obviously viewed as serious and significant enough to be reprinted a half century and later after its first appearance. (BINDINGS - FRANKLIN MOWERY). (GOLDEN COCKEREL PRESS). JONES, DAVID, Illustrator BIBLE IN ENGLISH
BOOK OF JONAH
Waltham St. Lawrence: Golden Cockerel Press 1926. No. 48 OF CLXXV COPIES. 258 x 195 mm. 10 1/4 x 7 3/4". 15 3 pp.
Understated black crushed morocco by J. Franklin Mowery stamp-signed "JFM 94" on rear turn-in wraparound design of blind-stamped L-shaped panels of intersecting lines smooth spine with vertical gilt lettering leather hinges edges untrimmed. Original illustrated upper cover of dust jacket repaired at one corner bound in at rear. In a matching morocco-lipped slipcase. Title page with large woodcut of the risen Christ four large vignettes in the text four pictorial half borders and four full-page woodcuts all by David Jones printer's device in colophon. Front pastedown with bookplate of Jan van der Marck. Chanticleer 40. A pristine copy.

This is a wonderfully--if understatedly--bound copy of one of the most strictly limited Golden Cockerel Press productions. The binding is the work of J. Franklin Mowery retired Head of Conservation at the Folger Shakespeare Library and past president of the Guild of Book Workers. Mowery studied bookbinding under Professor Kurt Londenberg at the Staatliche Hochschule für bildende Künste Academy of Art in Hamburg and trained as a paper conservator under Otto Wächter in Vienna before returning to the U.S. to work at the Huntington Library. According to his article "A Binder's Training" Guild of Book Workers' Journal XX 1981-82 the blind-stamping technique seen here was "particularly favored by Professor Londenberg" and often employed by Mowery for the range of design possibilities it offers. The method uses dies to stamp the patterns: "a photographic process can transfer any black and white image onto zinc plates that are deeply etched and mounted onto type-high metal blocks for heated impressions or onto wood for cold embossing." Mowery stated that lines of the design here represent the driving rain of the storm that struck Jonah's ship. Founded in 1920 with the intention to print fine editions of important well-known books as well as new literary works of merit from young authors the Golden Cockerel Press was purchased in 1924 by the illustrator and wood-engraver Robert Gibbings. "Under his direction" says Cave the Press was "transformed into the principal vehicle for the renaissance of wood-engraved book illustration that took place in the years between the wars." In addition to doing wood engravings himself Gibbings employed a stable of eminent artists including among others Eric Gill Blair Hughes-Stanton John Nash John Farleigh Eric Ravilious and David Jones. The memorable woodcuts are the work of Jones 1895-1974 who had a brief but impressive career as an illustrator before eye strain forced him to abandon engraving in 1930. In his published study of Jones' work Douglas Cleverdon says that in the short time Jones was engraving "he produced a remarkable amount of work of great variety; some witty some mystical; some boldly cut some delicately shaded; some simple to print some virtually impossible. Although he never attained . . . the greatest technical mastery in the conventional sense his prints are nearly always distinguished by their excellence of design personal commitment and absolute individuality." Our binding was commissioned by collector and self-described "radical" museum administrator Jan van der Marck 1929-2010 who championed artists that pushed boundaries--often to the consternation of the museum boards who employed him. Mounted on 14 ledger sheets 31 x 42cm. .Ambassador John Lothrop Motley April 15 1814 – May 29 1877 was an American author and diplomat. As a popular historian he is best known for his works on the Netherlands the three volume work The Rise of the Dutch Republic and four volume History of the United Netherlands. As United States Minister to Austria in the service of the Abraham Lincoln administration Motley helped to prevent European intervention on the side of the Confederates in the American Civil War. He later served as Minister to the United Kingdom Court of St. James during the Ulysses S. Grant administration. In December 1870 Mr. Motley sent a 62-page dispatch to Secretary Fish titled “End of a Mission†in which he protested his recall and recounted the events leading to the dispatch of November 10. The Secretary followed with an even longer rejoinder sent not to Motley who was no longer in an official position and hadn’t been when he had sent the dispatch but to the chargé d’affaires Benjamin Moran. Senator Sumner upbraided Mr. Grant and Mr. Fish on the Senate floor then had the Senate publish all the documents related to the recall. In 1878 Oliver Wendell Holmes a fellow Brahmin wrote a memorial biography which was devoted to a defense of the former minister and a repudiation of his recall. John Jay who had succeeded Mr. Motley in Vienna published his own defense of him in 1877. Mr. Grant after leaving the presidency wrote a letter to the New York Herald reiterating that his reason for dismissing Mr. Motley was solely that he had failed to carry out his duties. Mr. Grant restated this charge a few years later in a Cairo interview while he was on a world tour concluding that he had no ill will toward Mr. Motley who “…like other estimable men made mistakes and Motley made a mistake which made him an improper person to hold office under me.â€.Provenance: Lt.-Col.
