Contemporary quarter-brown suede over terracotta cloth boards gilt lettering to the spine red speckeld foredges new endpapers. Light rubbing to the suede leather hint of sunning to the front board else extremities remain in near fine condition. Contents remarkably well-preserved indicating only a touch of slight foxing chiefly confined to the preliminary pages otherwise without blemish markings or notations. Overall very good. The British Library in their catalogued entry notes the presence of two variants of the imprint 'The first line of the imprint has "And Sold". Scarce in commerce. <br/><br/>A remarkable and crucial historical account of the raging debates within the English parliament surrounding the events leading up to the Glorious Revolution of 1688 also known as the Bloodless Revolution An Réabhlóid Ghlórmhar Irish: Rèabhlaid Ghlòrmhor Scottish Gaelic; Chwyldro Gogoneddus Welsh; Glorieuze Overtocht Dutch which witnessed the deposition of James II also James VII of Scotland from the English Throne in favour of his daughter Mary II and her husband "stadtholder and de facto ruler of the Dutch Republic" William III of Orange. The Revolution would see the passage of the landmark Bill of Rights of 1689 ensured the exclusion of Catholics from the English throne severely curtailed the monarch's power and witnessed the effective establishment of a constitutional monarchy thereby ensuring the supremacy of Parliament. It further led to the Act of Toleration of 1689 granting toleration to "Nonconformist Protestants" but excluding Catholics whose emancipation would be delayed for a further 140 years. The present volume deals chiefly with Parliament's resolution relating to whether James had forfeited or abdicated the throne by virtue of his having discarded the "Great Seal of the Realm" into the River Thames prior to fleeing for France his subsequent capture at Kent and later exile under the protection of Louis XIV of France. Ultimately Parliament declared that: "King James II having endeavored to subvert the constitution of the kingdom by breaking the original contract between king and people and by the advice of Jesuits and other wicked persons having violated the fundamental laws and having withdrawn himself out of this kingdom has abdicated the government and that the throne is thereby vacant." Hardcover / Original publishers quarter morocco with gilt lettering on spine and Emblemata on cover. Top edge gilt. Only some faint signs of dampstain to the outer margins of the illustrations. Otherwise in splendid condition with only minor signs of external wear. Presentation copy from Master Ernest Woodhame to R. Graham Carritt on the occasion of his admission to the Livery of the Company in June 1927. With a bookplate of Grocer's Hall to the front pastedown. The Worshipful Company of Grocers is one of the 110 Livery Companies of the City of London and ranks second in order of precedence. Established in 1345 the Grocers comprise one of London's Great Twelve City Livery Companies. The company was founded in the 14th century by members of the Guild of Pepperers which dates from 1180. The Company was responsible for maintaining standards for the purity of spices and for the setting of certain weights and measures. Its members included London's pharmacists who separated forming the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries in 1617. The guild was known as the Company of Grossers from 1373 until 1376 when it was renamed the Company of Grocers of London. In 1428 two years after building its first hall in Old Jewry the Company was granted a Royal Charter by King Henry VI of England. One of the Great Twelve City Livery Companies it ranks second in the Companies order of precedence after the Mercers' Company. It is said that the Grocers' Company used to be first in the order until Queen Elizabeth I as Honorary Master of the Mercers' Company found herself in procession after her coronation behind the Grocers' camel which was emitting unfortunate smells; as a result the Mercers were promoted. Today the Grocers' Company exists as a charitable constitutional and ceremonial institution which plays a significant role in the election of and supporting the Lord Mayor and the Sheriffs of the City of London. The Company's motto is "God Grant Grace". The Company also provides banqueting and conference facilities at Grocers' Hall situated in Prince's Street next to the Bank of England. The earliest known Grocers' Hall was in Poultry London then known as Conningshop-lane on account of the three conies or rabbits hanging over a poulterer's stall in the lane. It was built in 1428 on land once owned by Lord Fitzwalter and let out "for dinners funerals county feasts and weddings." The roof and woodwork of the hall were destroyed in the 1666 Great Fire and afterwards a new roof was erected on the old walls while Sir John Cutler 1st Baronet paid for a new parlour and dining room. The hall was again renovated in 1681 by the future Lord Mayor of London Sir John Moore. A new hall was built on the same site between 1798 and 1802 when part of the garden was sold to the Bank of England for the expansion of nearby Prince's Street. However frequent and extensive repairs were required due to defective foundations in the building which was replaced by a fourth hall completed in 1893 on Prince's Street. The hall survived the Blitz with only minor damage to its north wing but was almost completely destroyed by a fire in 1965 apparently caused by a lightbulb left on in the grand staircase beneath an oak lintel which smouldered and eventually caught fire. A fifth and final hall was constructed nearby in 1970 also on Prince's Street which remains the Grocers' home today. The present Master Grocer for 2018-19 is James Whitmore and the Company's Clerk is Brigadier Greville Bibby. The Company is responsible for the maintenance of Oundle School at Oundle Northamptonshire which uses the Grocers' crest of a camel as its school badge and of the Elms School in Colwall Herefordshire. Reed's School's Annual Foundation Appeal has been held at Grocers’ Hall for over fifty years. Additionally in 1876 the Company founded the Grocers' Company School in Hackney east of the City of London for the education of "sons of the middle classes". This was transferred into London County Council's control after that authority's formation in 1889 and changed its name to Hackney Downs School; it closed in 1995. The school depicted as its school badge a camel for the Lower School and a shield with cloves and the motto of the Grocers' Company for the Upper School; the Camel and Cloves are remembered to this day by old boys of the school through the Clove Club for former pupils. The Grocers' Company now maintains close links with and is the principal sponsor of Hackney's Mossbourne Academy renowned for its excellent educational standards. The Company is also affiliated to HMS Queen Elizabeth the first of the Royal Navy's new Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carriers and with the Coldstream Guards the British Army's oldest regular regiment. Eglinton Village in County Londonderry Northern Ireland was established by the Grocers' Guild in 1619 under the name of Muff; the local Castle Credit Union adopted the use of the Company's crest as has Eglinton Primary School. The church of St Mary the Virgin at Northill in Bedfordshire shows the Grocers' coat of arms on a stained glass window by John Oliver. The company commissioned the window in 1664. ‎<p>Wolverhampton May 17 1888. 1888. Fine. - Over 360 words penned on three-and-a-quarter sides of folded 7-7/8 inch high by 5 inch wide "Queen Street Congregational Chapel Wolverhampton" stationery. The English nonconformist divine Charles Albert Berry congratulates the American Impressario Major James B. Pond on his marriage "Do I know the happy bride I have a sort of dim notion that I both saw & spoke to her. Am I dreaming or have I had the pleasure" He goes on to say that he's "made a place for her in my invisible circle of memoried friends." Explaining that though he and his wife will be visiting America soon he has no intention of lecturing "I am being pretty much worked to death & my holiday when I take it must be a time of real rest." He mentions hearing the Dr. Abbott may be permanently staying in Plymouth and goes on to write his impressions of the state of affairs in Britain: "Over here things are getting hopelessly mixed theologically politically and socially. Spurgeon is urging the Churches to get back to pre-scientific beliefs: Chamberlain is struggling to hold the country to pre-humanitarian views upon Ireland: and a little band of men in London are shouting pre-Civilized crudities about socialism & the like." Signed "Charles. A. Berry". Folded for mailing else near fine.</p><p>The English nonconformist divine Charles Albert Berry 1852-1899 was influenced by the New York Dutch Reformed Church minister Dr. J. M. Macaulay when the latter resided in England for a few years. After attending Airedale College in Bradford to study for the ministry he became pastor of the St. George's Road Congregational church in Bolton. He became pastor of the Curch at Queen Street in Woverhampton where his broad views and eloquence made an impact. Having promised Henry Ward Beecher that he would visit America he did so but refused the invitation to succeed Beecher. Following an 1892 conference at Grindelwald he Hugh Price Hughes and Alexander Mackennal introduced the ideas and principles of a Free Church federation throughout England. He served as the first president of the Free Church congress and also served as president of the Congregational Union of England and Wales. He effectively campaigned for peace between England and America over the Venezualan boundery dispute.</p> Wolverhampton, May 17, 1888.‎

His Father Died In A Street Battle With The European Eight-Nation Alliance Forces In The Course Of The Boxer Rebellion Events In 1901. "During My Childhood" Lao She Later Recalled "I Didn't Need To Hear Stories About Evil Ogres Eating Children And So Forth; The Foreign Devils My Mother Told Me About Were More Barbaric And Cruel Than Any Fairy Tale Ogre With A Huge Mouth And Great Fangs. And Fairy Tales Are Only Fairy Tales Whereas My Mother's Stories Were 100 Percent Factual And They Directly Affected Our Whole Family." In 1913 He Was Accepted To Beijing Normal University From Which He Graduated In 1918. Between 1918 And 1924 Lao She Was Involved As Administrator And Faculty Member At A Number Of Primary And Secondary Schools. He Was Highly Influenced By The May Fourth Movement 1919 Which " Gave Me A New Spirit And A New Literary Language. I Am Grateful To The May Fourth Movement As It Allowed Me To Become A Writer." He Went On To Serve As Lecturer In The Chinese Section Of The School Of Oriental Studies At The University Of London From 1924 To 1929. During His Time In London He Absorbed A Great Deal Of English Literature Especially Dickens Whom He Adored And Began His Own Writing. In The Summer Of 1929 He Left Britain For Singapore Teaching At The Chinese High School. Between His Return To China In The Spring Of 1930 Until 1937 He Taught At Several Universities Including Cheeloo University And Shandong University Qingdao. Lao She Was A Major Popularizer Of Humor Writing In China Especially Through His Novels His Short Stories And Essays For Journals Like Lin Yutang's The Analects Fortnightly Lunyu Banyuekan Est. 1932 And His Stage Plays And Other Performing Arts Notably Xiangsheng.On 27 March 1938 The All-China Resistance Association Of Writers And Artists Was Established With Lao She As Its Leader. The Purpose Of This Organization Was To Unite Cultural Workers Against The Japanese And Lao She Was A Respected Novelist Who Had Remained Neutral During The Ideological Discussions Between Various Literary Groups In The Preceding Years. In March 1946 Lao She Travelled To The United States On A Two-Year Cultural Grant Lecturing And Overseeing The Translation Of Several Of His Novels. He Stayed In The Us From 1946 Until December 1949. During Lao She's Traveling His Friend Pearl S. Buck And Her Husband Had Served As Sponsors And They Helped Lao She Live In The U.S. After The People's Republic Of China Was Established Lao She Rejected Buck's Advice To Stay In America And Came Back To China. Rickshaw Boy Was Translated By Buck In The Early 1940'S. Lao She Was Married To Painter Hu Jieqing; Together They Had A Son And Three Daughters. During The Cultural Revolution He Was Condemned As A Counterrevolutionary Paraded By The Red Guards Through The Streets And Beaten Publicly At The Door Steps Of The Temple Of Confucius In Beijing. According To The Official Record This Abuse Left Lao She Greatly Humiliated Both Mentally And Physically And He Committed Suicide By Drowning Himself In Beijing's Taiping Lake On 24 August 1966. His Relatives Were Accused Of Implication In His "Crimes" But Rescued His Manuscripts After His Death Hiding Them In Coal Piles And A Chimney And Moving Them From House To House.
