Very Good. 12mo; 134 2 pages; A rare and early high school annual issued by the Washington High School in Washington DC in original gray cloth binding with gilt lettering on front cover. Light soiling to covers former owner's name on endpaper "W. R. Houchen / Sec. C / W.H.S./S.H.B" The history of the published yearbook for Aerican high schools is not yet well established but sources agree that examples before about 1910 are few in number. This example from 1890 begins with Greeting - "The First 'Annual' ever issued from the High School is placed before the Students and the Public. It has been the aim of the editors to present in a concise way an insight into the working of the great school of which they know comparatively little; but the primary motive has been to encourage a warmer class fellowship ." Followed by History of the School organized in 1880; summaries of various courses; Class of 1890 with list of students names; The Battalion; The Glee Club; Debating Society; Girls' Literary Society; Football; Military Drill; Hiawatha's Vision; etc. Several pages at the end contain some fascinating pictorial advertisements from local businesses. The first page in this section is for the firm of Wyckoff Seamans & Benedict offering a line engraving of 'The Remington Standard Typewriter." This ad includes a quote attributed to Charles Reade's "The Coming Man' -- "A stenographer who can typewrite his notes would be safer from poverty than a Greek Scholar." Another full page ad shows a large illustration of an historically important bicycle -- "Victor King of Safeties" by the Washington branch of the Overman Wheel Company. The safety bicycle with two identically sized wheels developed from about 1885 represented a huge advance over the previous high wheeled "penny farthing" models; Overman were the first American manufacturers of this new type of bicycle. The cycle market of the time was growing almost too rapidly -- the Overman Wheel Company and its savage competitor Pope Manufacturing led what came to be hundreds of American makers. By the end of the 1890's the boom was over temporarily; Overman Wheel faced bankruptcy by the end of the century. Their Victor model shown was the flagship of their line featuring a lever-actuated rod brake at the rear and an unusual "Spring Fork" at the front. The tires shown were the early hard rubber tires in a year or two the Victor became available with the newly developed pneumatic tires inflated with air. The other full-page ad from a competitor was placed by the "Clark Cycle Company" 908 Pennsylvania Avenue. This ad shows a lady's safety; a weight of 39 pounds is cited for this -- the "Gent's" diamond frame weighed 40 pounds. These were light bicycles for the time; the "Victor" models were a bit lighter. Clark Cycle Company also proclaims themselves a source for the "King of the Road Lamps" made by Lucas in the UK. This example of the first yearbook from Washington High School is an incunabulum of the genre; there are no photographs either of students or facilities; the only illustrations are in the pages of ads. .
