Josefina Velazquez de Leon; Irene Goldstein (English Adaptation)
Mexican Cook Book Cookbook For American Homes / Libro De Cocina Mexicana Par El Hogar Americano Bilingual English and Spanish
Mexico City Mexico: Culinary Arts Institute. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1956. Second Edition. Hardcover. Offers authentic recipes from every region of the Mexican Republic. Adapted for use in the United States Central and South America. Author 1899-1968 "was a Mexican cook researcher writer and teacher. She was a pioneer of Mexican gastronomy and an entrepreneur of Mexican cuisine." - Wikipedia. "Before Rick Bayless before Diana Kennedy Josefina Velázquez de León was the sage of the Mexican kitchen Mexico's original celebrity chef." - Lesley Tellez. "Between the 1930s and 1960s she published over 140 cookbooks ran a cooking academy and hosted TV and radio shows. She is the woman responsible for giving a national face to regional Mexican cuisine." - laplazala on Instagram. "Her most important book is her only bilingual work the 'Mexican Cook Book Devoted to American Homes' published in 1947. Decades later it remains a classic. In a clear approachable tone Josefina breaks down iconic recipes such as tomato-infused Mexican rice refried beans chilaquiles and mole poblano. She traveled throughout Mexico and collected home cooks' recipes into books unifying what was then a disparate collection of locally known dishes. No one has matched her output and zeal or done more to shape Mexican food's culinary identity." - Lesley Tellez. Our research suggests this example is a slightly renamed second edition of the 1947 first edition mentioned above. 10-320 pp. Detailed Table of Contents at back. Light wear to original dark cerulean cloth lettered and ruled in gilt. Binding intact. Contents uniformly tanned with age remarkably clean and unmarked. No dust jacket presumably as issued. A rare and wonderfully preserved example of this Mexican epicurean classic. 19.6 x 14.5 cm. Axford p. 269. ; Drawings; 8vo . Culinary Arts Institute hardcover

He advertised himself as Bookbinder to the King from 1833 until the death of William IV in 1837 and adding bookselling to his binding activities. He married Grace Wilson 1818-1903 the daughter of a local merchant in 1841 in which year he also began to publish books as well as sell and bind them. By 1851 he was employing twenty men and women. But then in July 1854 at the age of forty-seven Robert Seton died. The business continued under his name presumably under the direction of his widow and with a certain residual momentum by now advertising for old books too until 1856. Then a decision was made and announced in the press that the goodwill and stock-in-trade were to be disposed of. at that point the business was reborn as Seton & Mackenzie advertising under that name a great variety of books in elegant bindings suitable for Christmas presents in December 1856. Charles Mackenzie 1821-1882. Mackenzie was born in Dunfermline the son of Charles Mackenzie and his wife Elizabeth Webster. By 1851 he was in lodgings in Edinburgh described simply on the Census Return as a booksellers clerk presumably to Robert Seton. And it was presumably he who along with the widow Grace Seton took over the reins after Setons death they became partners in another sense in 1859 when they married. So there we have the identity of Seton & Mackenzie. Committee of English Catholics:
To the Right Reverend Father in God John Bishop of Centuria Vicar Apostolic of the Southern District of England: My lord. We have seen a encyclical letter .
London 1791. This letter from the Catholic Committee to the Bishop of Centuria dated February 1791 was issued prior to passage of the bill brought by Charles Butler and the Catholic Committee. They attempt to explain and defend the actions and resolutions of the Catholic Committee to the Vicars Apostolic and to argue a case for the condemned oath. With errata notice tipped to inside of front wrapper; with page 33 numbered correctly. Dated at end: Feb 2 1791 and signed: Charles Berington. Jos. Wilks and six others for the Committee of English Catholics. Clean text throughout corners creased and lightly soiled. Original paper wraps creased and sunned. VG. Referenced by: ESTC T051371 In 1789 when the action of the "Catholic Committee" threatened seriously to compromise the English Catholics Walmesley called a synod of his colleagues and a decree was issued that the bishops of England "unanimously condemned the new form of oath intended for the Catholics and declared it unlawful to be taken". The issue was over the form of an oath of loyalty to George III necessary for Catholics to engage with the official world. The previous oath had been defined in the Roman Catholic Relief Act 1778. On 15 August 1790 Walmesley consecrated Dr. John Carroll the first Catholic Bishop in the United States of America at Lulworth Castle Dorset. Eventually however a form of words was agreed and The Roman Catholic Relief Act 1791 was passed in 1791 31 George III. c. 32 relieving Catholics of certain political educational and economic disabilities. It admitted Catholics to the practise of law permitted the exercise of their religion and the existence of their schools. On the other hand chapels schools officiating priests and teachers were to be registered assemblies with locked doors as well as steeples and bells to chapels were forbidden; priests were not to wear their robes or to hold service in the open air; children of Protestants were not to be admitted to the schools; monastic orders and endowments of schools and colleges were prohibited. - See Wikipedia [London?, 1791] paperback
