‎Two volumes in one. pp. 564; 658. This was probably issued with two engraved title pages and 16 portrait plates - which are not now present. Thick 12mo. Early and unusual moire cloth binding. Spine repaired. Hardbound. Very good. Mary Anne Thompson Clarke (1776-1852) became the mistress of Prince Frederick Augustus (1763-1827) Duke of York in 1803, while he was Commander-in-Chief of British forces. He set her up in a fashionable residence, but failed to supply the funds necessary to support their lavish lifestyle. In 1809, a national scandal arose when Clarke testified before the House of Commons that she had sold army commissions with the Duke of York's knowledge. Frederick was forced to resign from his position. A select committee was appointed by the British House of Commons to enquire into the matter. The parliament eventually acquitted the Duke of having received bribes by 278 votes to 196. He nevertheless resigned because of the high tally against him. In 1811, after it was revealed that Clarke had received payment from the Duke's disgraced chief accuser, Gwyllym Lloyd Wardle (1762?-1833), the Prince Regent reappointed the now exonerated Duke of York as commander-in-chief. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! ‎pp. iv, xcv, 378, [xvi] + Frontis Portrait. Uncut. Original paper backed boards; spine almost perished, but most of the original printed paper label remains. 8vo. 230 mm. A great contemporary account of the last English impeachment trial conducted in the House of Lords. The accused was Henry Dundas, Lord Melville, considered to be the foremost Scotsman of the Eighteenth Century. The report of a Parliamentary Commission gave rise to considerable suspicions against him, as it was conclusively shown that large sums of public money during his tenure of office as Treasurer of the Navy (1782-1783 and 1784-1800) had been applied to other uses than those of the navy. It is interesting to note that Dundas could have avoided these proceedings, had he submitted to criminal charges, but he chose to face impeachment, anticipating that his chances were better before his fellow Lords. After a trial lasting fifteen days he was acquitted on all charges by his peers. Marke 1016; Goldsmiths' 19262-63. Includes an informative DNB article on Lord Melville. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! W151‎

‎(Atkinson, William).‎

‎CORRECT LIST OF THE NAMES OF AND MONEY SUBSCRIBED BY ALL THE MEMBERS AND OFFICERS OF THE BRIDGE STREET INQUISITION. Sixth Edition.‎

‎16 p. 8vo. Disbound. William, Atkinson (1758-1846), was ordained priest in 1782, and in 1784 was appointed lecturer at the parish church of Bradford, Yorkshire. At Bradford he was embroiled in various controversies, poetical and political. He kept a printing press in his home and often issued pamphlets of his own on ecclesiastical and political topics under the name of the Old Inquirer. Between 1794 and 1829 he published a further twenty-five pamphlets, all of which took an increasingly reactionary approach to a variety of political, religious, and economic subjects. A consistent target was dissent; at one time he brought out a small serial called The Looking Glass, in which he bitterly expressed his views on this topic. He engaged in a short pamphlet war with `Vindex' (Edward Parsons) on the loyalty of dissenters. Atkinson was described as a `man of rare scholarly attainment, but of somewhat eccentric character' (Venn, Alum. Cant.). He was said to have been of Herculean build. We suspect that the subscribers' list here and the large sums pledged may be fictitious, and part of Atkinson's pamphlet war with a supposed 'Constitutional Association, for Suppressing Seditious Publications'. This pamphlet is VERY SCARCE. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! ENGLAND BOX 5‎

‎THE GREEK TESTAMENT: With a Critically Revised Text: A Digest of Various Readings: Marginal References To Verbal and Idiomatic Usage: Prolegomena: And a Critical and Exegetical Commentary. For the Use of Theological Students and Ministers. In Four Volumes‎

‎Four Volumes. Text in English and Greek. All edges marbled. 225mm. Original full leather bindings rubbed and worn. Original morocco spine labels. Sixth edition. Hardbound. Very good. Henry Alford (1810-1871) was an English churchman (Dean of Canterbury), theologian, textual critic, scholar, poet, hymnodist, and writer. "His chief fame rests on this monumental edition of the New Testament in Greek, which occupied him from 1841 to 1861. In this work he first produced a careful collation of the readings of the chief manuscripts and the researches of the ripest continental scholarship of his day. Philological rather than theological in character, it marked an epochal change from the old homiletic commentary, and though more recent research, patristic and papyral, has largely changed the method of New Testament exegesis, Alford's work is still a quarry where the student can dig with a good deal of profit." - Wiki.
