‎A POETICAL ESSAY, ON THE ATTRIBUTES OF GOD. Part II. Second Edition.‎

‎28 p. + Numerous blanks in binding. Margins slightly browned. 4to. 255 mm. Old leather backed marbled boards binding, worn and broken at joints. XLib. ** Autograph of "M. Tyson C.C.C." This is undoubtedly the ownership Michael Tyson (1740-1780), English antiquary and artist (the C.C.C. after his name refers to his attendance and ranking at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge). His library, which was sold by Leigh & Sotheby in 1781, was rich in rare works. He is probably most famous for his many engravings, etchings, and miniatures (mostly made for private circulation). The author of this interesting poetic essay was William Hayward Roberts (1734-91), Scholar and Fellow of Eton and King's. He was appointed Provost of Eton in 1781. Issued separately from Part I, which was entitled 'Poetical Essay, on the Existence of God.' W144‎

‎THE WORKS OF ALGERNON SYDNEY. A New Edition. [Edited by Thomas Hollis].‎

‎pp. (8), 540, (2), 22, 56, 57, 65 , 32, 33 + A handsome bust portrait engraved by Basire, after Cipriani. Portrait offset on to the unusual title page. Some old foxing. Large 4to. 295 mm. x 240 mm. Modern plain full leather binding. Hardbound. Very good. ** WITH AMERICAN CIVIL WAR ERA (1863) MANUSCRIPT NOTES AND ANNOTATIONS. Edited by the great 'Republican' Thomas Hollis, with additions and corrections by Joseph Robertson, this edition includes: Memoirs of the Life of Algernon Sydney; Discourses Concerning Government; Letters of Algernon Sydney, taken from Thurloe's State Papers; The Protector's Advice to Algernon Sydney; Letters of Algernon Sydney, taken from the Sydney papers; Letters of A. Sydney to Henry Savile, Ambassador in France; The Trial of A. Sydney; The Apology of A. Sydney in the Day of his Death; and A General view of Government in Europe. This is an important book in the history of the ideas that founded the American republic, but what is perhaps most interesting about this copy are the manuscript notes and annotations written, in a careful small hand, in America, during the Civil War (1863). A few of these struck our eye, and we're glad to reproduce a few selections here: "I have lately undertaking to read Algernon Sydney on government. There is great difference in reading a book at four and twenty and at eighty eight. As often as I have read it and fumbled it over, it now excites fresh admiration that this work has excited so little interest in the literary world. As splendid an edition of it as the art of printing can produce, as well as for the intrinsic merits of the work, as for the proof it brings of the bitter sufferings of the advocates of liberty from that time to this, and to show the slow progress of moral, philosophical, political illumination in the world, ought to now be published in America" - John Adams to Thomas Jefferson 17 September, 1823. ".the danger in America. arises from (1) the indifference of the people to the character of their deputies; (2) the disinclination of good men to go as deputies; (3) and the inclination of bad men to go as such. The rottenness of our law making bodies has reached such a point that if it shall not soon be cured it can not longer endure." - 1863. "Among the causes, which have brought the USA to their present unhappy condition, may be reckoned, as a leading one, the predominance in their councils of mere municipal lawyers. The low morals and the crass ignorance (of these) are not equal to the work of government, filched by them from a blindly confiding people. A profession proverbially selfish and dishonest can not produce statesmen, however fecund it may be of politicians. The conduct of government is the work of statesmen - of unselfish, honest, high-hearted, great-minded men = that class has disappeared and has given way to small country lawyers whose minds exercise only upon petty squabbles of the neighborhood, incapable of grasping the vast concerns of a nation. Bad as this is, there is something worse. and that is that the profession of the law is every year sinking lower in ignorance and in contempt, while at the same time it is rising in power." - 1863. These manuscript annotations make this copy UNIQUE, and very worthy of further study. W150. **PRICE JUST REDUCED!‎

‎Mainzer, Dr. Joseph.‎

‎MUSIC AND EDUCATION.‎

‎pp. xv, 111 + Publisher's advertisements dated April, 1847 (32 p.). Thin 8vo. Original full cloth binding, decorated in blind. Soiled. PRESENTATION COPY of the first edition: "James B. Syme from Dr. Mainzer." An influential essay by a German singing master and music teacher who came to England in 1839. Mainzer dedicates his book to the Members of the Educational Institute of Scotland 'because the Institute has, despite the national prejudices, acknowledged music as a branch of public instruction, as an element in the education of youth'. He discusses (in a Scottish context): the Present System of Musical Education; Musical Teaching in Boarding Schools; Vocal Music, its Influence Upon the Health of Children; Infancy the Best Age for Singing; Moral Influence of Music; Music in Infant Schools (and) in Schools for Children, Young Ladies, and Classical Students; Etc. This copy was presented to Dr. James Syme (1799-1870) of Edinburgh. As a student at Edinburgh University he found a way of dissolving rubber which later had many commercial applications. Syme opened a school of Anatomy and later opened a very successful private clinic. In 1833, he became Professor of Surgery in Edinburgh and held that position until his death. Syme is known for introducing conservative alternatives to the major amputations that were common at the time. In 1831, he released a booklet, which detailed cases where joint excision could be used instead of amputation for grossly diseased joints. In 1842, Syme described an amputation at the ankle. This amputation still bears his name, as it replaced a portion of below knee amputations, which were ordinary practice at that time. JUN2C / SE 1/2‎

Original full green morocco leather binding, handsomely decorated in gold gilt, designed by Albert Henry Warren. Pencil autograph ownership of H. Allen Anderson (who was the author of 'The Chief : Ernest Thompson Seton and the changing West.' Benjamin Fawcett (1808-1893) was one of the finest of English nineteenth century woodblock colour printers. The son of a ship's master, he was apprenticed at age 14 for seven years to William Forth, a Bridlington bookseller and printer. In 1831 he started his own business in Driffield, as music seller, bookbinder and printer, bookseller and stationer. He became a master of hand-coloured wood engraving. The process started with an accurate painting of the subject. (In this case the paintings were by F.A. Lydon, a local youth who served his apprenticeship with Fawcett and stayed with him until 1883). The picture was then carved, with meticulous attention to detail, on a wooden block of pear or boxwood (which he imported, matured, sawed and sliced and surfaced by his own hands). Placed in a printing press the block gave a black-and-white print, which was then hand-coloured with high-grade inks (often by Fawcett's 'clever' wife with his participation and direction). Many of his books were were published by Groombridge, of London. This work is usually found with that imprint. Indeed, we have been unable to locate any other copy anywhere with Bell and Daldy as publishers. Douglas William Jerrold (1803-1857) was an English dramatist and writer who, from the 1830s to 1850s, was absolutely at the centre of literary London. A friend of Dickens and Thackeray, both pall-bearers at his funeral. Jerrold was an editor, playwright, journalist, novelist and public wit and among the most popular writers in Britain. It was 'Mrs Caudle's Curtain Lectures' that really captured the public's imagination. Serialized in Punch, they were lively studies of female domination in Victorian society. The illustrations here by Charles Kenne (1823-1891), who began to draw for Punch in 1852, are considered a masterpiece in book illustration. Ray. Binding rubbed and worn. Johannes Herr (1781-1850), was the founder of the Reformed Mennonite Church. Around 1800 his father (Francis) was expelled from the Mennonite Church in West Lampeter Township, Lancaster County, PA. Francis began to conduct religious services in his home as a lay brother. He died in 1810, leaving a family of eight children, none of whom had been baptized as members in any church. Among those who associated with him in his lay services were Abraham Landis and David Buckwalter, both of whom had withdrawn from the Mennonite Church. After Francis Herr's death the meetings continued and his son John was asked to lead the services, although he was not yet baptized. In a meeting on 30 May 1812, at John Herr's home John was elected pastor and bishop, and Abraham Landis was elected to baptize him. Herr in turn baptized Landis and Abraham Groff, Groff being elected deacon. Soon thereafter Abraham Landis was chosen preacher, followed by John Groff as preacher. In 1812 the first meetinghouse was dedicated, called Longenecker's. John became a vigorous leader of the new group. He traveled widely, especially to Western New York and Ontario, where congregations of his group were established. Scarce First Edition. PA SHELF 011A‎

Manuscript ownership of William B. Young (?). William Cobbett (1763-1835) was an English pamphleteer, farmer, activist and journalist. Among his causes were: Reformation of Parliament and abolishing the rotten boroughs (which he hoped to end the poverty of farm labourers); he attacked the borough-mongers, sinecurists and "tax-eaters" relentlessly; he opposed attempts in the House of Commons to bring in Bills against boxing and bull-baiting he was against the Corn Laws (a tax on imported grain); although not a Catholic, he became a fiery advocate of Catholic Emancipation in Britain; etc. Early in his career, he was a loyalist supporter of King and Country: but later he joined and successfully publicised the radical movement, which led to the Reform Bill of 1832, and to his winning the parliamentary seat of Oldham. Following the passage of the Power of Imprisonment Bill in 1817, and fearing arrest for his arguably seditious writings, he fled to the United States (returning to England two years later). Cobbett's earlier newspaper, the Political Register (1812-1817)had been denounced as 'two-penny trash' - a name he gladly adopted for this later work. Through the seeming contradictions in Cobbett's life, two things stayed constant: an opposition to authority, and a suspicion of novelty. He wrote many polemics, on subjects from political reform to religion. "Cobbett is considered to have begun as an inherently conservative journalist who, angered by the corrupt British political establishment, became increasingly radical and sympathetic to anti-government and democratic ideals. He provides an alternative view of rural England in the age of an Industrial Revolution with which he was not in sympathy. Cobbett wished England would return to the rural England of the 1760s to which he was born. Unlike fellow radical Thomas Paine, Cobbett was not an internationalist cosmopolitan and did not support a republican Britain. He boasted that he was not a "citizen of world" saying it is quite enough for me to think about what is best for England, Scotland and Ireland." - Wiki. His style of agitation and general opinions have long been admired in America. Goldsmiths 37363 (one part only); Kress C.2481. A famous essay (satire) in opposition to the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle (1748) which ended the War of the Austrian Succession (1740-1748). In Britain, George II and his ministers were seen by many as having conducted the war and the peace to the best advantage of Brunswick-Luneburg (of which George was Elector) rather than Britain. George and Britain did gain from the treaty in one respect: that one clause of it had finally compelled the French to recognize the Hanoverian succession to the British throne and expel the Jacobites from France. The ciphered name on the title and dedication are often taken to stand for Philip Dormer Stanhope, Earl of Chesterfield (1694-1773). Here, in pencil, is identified the likely dedicatee - the military Commander, John Lindsay, twentieth Earl Crawford (1702-1749). The same pencil hand identifies the anonymous author as Henry Fielding. This is unlikely to be correct. W129. Small Box 8‎

This is the poem that made his reputation. Composed in a garret in Bell Alley, it was influenced by James Thomson's poem The Seasons. Bloomfield was able to carry some fifty to a hundred finished lines of it in his head at a time until there was opportunity to write them down. The manuscript was declined by several publishers and was eventually shown by his brother George to Capel Lofft, a radical Suffolk squire of literary tastes, who arranged for its publication with woodcuts by Thomas Bewick in 1800. The success of the poem was remarkable, over 25,000 were sold within the next two years, and many thoudands more in the next decade. It was extremely popular in America. Unfortunately, Vernor and Hood, his publishers, went bankrupt (1812) and much of the rest of Bloomfield's life was spent in poverty and depression. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! POETRY 4‎
