Originally published in three parts between 1663 and 1678; the first edition with Hogarth's plates appeared in 1726 and the plates were re-engraved for this edition. Influenced by Rabelais and particularly Cervantes' Don Quixote Butler's mock-heroic poem satirized Roundheads Puritans Presbyterians and other factions of the English Civil War. "Although 'written in the time of the late Wars' Hudibras was not licensed to be printed until 11 November 1662 two years after re-establishment of the monarchy when a satire on Puritanism could no longer give offense to the ruling party. On the contrary the satisfaction which it gave to the King and court had much to do with the great success it achieved." Grolier English Literature 100 32. Samuel Pepys bought a copy and finding no humor in it sold it the same day. Still the book enjoyed enormous popularity and on 5 November 1663 the Second Part appeared. Fourteen years passed before 'Hudibras: the Third and Last Part' dated 1678 was entered in the Stationers' register on 22 August 1677 and put on sale. Multiple editions as well as pirated issues of the individual parts as well as combined editions were published by 1680. According to Bland Hogarth's plates are a "landmark in English illustration and emphasize its divergence from an international style. . . . nothing could be more different from French work of the time . . . Hogarth aims at the common man; where the French illustrator is salacious he is coarse; where the French illustrator chooses a classical or aristocratic subject he prefers a contemporary plebeian one; and he is moral where the Frenchman is amoral." Small 8vo: 10360pp with portrait frontispiece engraved title-page folding map and six full-page plates engraved by Brühl the 1741 first edition published in Copenhagen contained only 3 three plates in addition to the frontispiece; the first English edition none. Contemporary dark brown mottled sheep elaborately gilded spine sewn on five bands green and tan lettering pieces gilt red paste-paper end papers marbled edges. Spine rubbed with some loss of gilt else an extremely pleasing and collectible copy of this satirical romance in the style of Gulliver's Travels although Bleiler notes that "Holberg's satire is wider in scope more penetrating in analysis and less local than Swift's" by the father of Danish literature "Holberg found Denmark with no books and he wrote a library for her."—Encyclopedia Britannica. Originally published in 1741 this highly imaginative Swiftian journey to a fifth underground continent is set in the Norwegian town of Bergen where a penniless student visits a strange cave falls into a void and ends up on the subterranean planet Nazar which is inhabited by sentient monkeys thinking trees goat philosophers and double basses that communicate musically. According to Lewis Utopian Literature p. 92 Niels Klim is the first important fictional use of the astronomer Edmond Haley's theory suggested in a paper published by the Royal Society in 1692 that three concentric hollow balls nested inside the earth account for the magnetism of the poles through their movement and that openings at the poles provide access to hidden worlds through a series of caves. Nor was Haley alone: from the 1600s to the early 1900s the notion of a hollow earth was treated seriously by leading scientists including Johannes Kepler and Athanasius Kircher. N. B. Fascinating late Medieval Irish variant 14th-15th century of the earlier French Queste del Saint Graal and here followed by an English translation. Introduction Commentary with detailed comparison of Irish translation of the Old French Vulgate Queste del Saint Grail or Graal. Some differences to the Vulgate Guinevere or 'Genebra' is 'daughter of the King of the Romans'. Also the Maimed king is possibly equated with the Irish Partholon! Falconer also sees similarities to the Welsh translation variant as well. The pages are clean and free of writing.
