Clowes Printer; Royal Society of Arts 12 Typed Letters and one Autograph Letter re the printing of the 'Society of Arts Journal' addressed to Sir HT. Wood and G.K.Menzies Secretaries Royal Society of Arts together with one printed circular.
10 August 1915 to 23 November 1917. Clowes is an eminent firm of English printers founded in London in 1803 and still thriving in Suffolk. The twelve typed letters are each one page quarto on the firm's Duke Street letterhead. The autograph letter is one page 12mo with mourning border. The collection in good condition overall with a few items aged and lightly creased. Most items docketed and bearing the Society's stamp. All items except the circular signed by 'W A Clowes' who he informs Wood in his first letter has taken over from his cousin Captain W. C. Knight Clowes whose copy of the First Folio was subsequently bought by William Foyle. The collection provides an fascinating insight into the effect of the Great War on the printing trade with Clowes reluctantly announcing repeated increases in costs. In the third letter 21 October 1915 he states: 'We wish to wait and see what the effect of Lord Derby's recruiting scheme will be on the printing trade because if many more men are taken from it the cost of production will again be greatly increased . I am glad to say that for the moment we have a stock of the old Journal paper at the usual price'. Letter four 14 August 1918 warns of 'another large rise in wages in the London District in the near future' and letter five 27 March 1918 confirms 'the large increase in wages that the printing and binding trades have been compelled to grant their workpeople. All materials used in printing and binding have again risen and are still rising . we shall be obliged to raise our prices to you for printing and binding by a considerable percentage'. Letter six 20 March 1918 responds to a complaint from Menzies regarding the printing of the Journal's wrappers: 'I . cannot in any way defend the printing. I was having the matter thoroughly looked into before your letter came and the type renovated'. He complains that 'labour is so scarce' but promises that he will be 'keeping an eye on it until it is done properly'. Letter of 13 June 1917 announces '15% extra on composition machining and binding owing to the increases in wages which took place previously to October 1916 and the large increase that took place then and the still larger increase which had to be paid on this June 1st'. A printed circular announces another rise of 15% from 31 October 1917 'owing to the further increases in War Bonuses and the never ceasing increases in the cost of all materials'. On 28 March 1917 Clowes warns that the firm has 'only sufficient paper in stock to take us to about June 30th' and that 'prices will rise very sharply immediately owing to the great scarcity of materials'. In the handwritten letter which ends the series Clowes thanks Menzies for his 'kind letter of sympathy with us on the sad loss we have sustained by the death of my Cousin Mr Knight Clowes. I note with pleasure that you intend to insert a short obituary notice of him in your Journal. Good and entirely legible on aged paper. Twenty-five lines of text above five-line publishers' slug. Probably printed as the book itself was by the firm of 'J. Smeeton Printer 148 St. Martin's Lane.' Joseph Smeeton died in 1808. BBTI gives his firm's dates as 1794 to 1808. Ends 'The rarity of his "Merrie Conceited Jests" combined with the great price demanded for it was the chief Inducement to reprint it in its present Form. The Copy made use of for that purpose had belonged to the Rev. J. BRAND Secretary to the Antiquarian Society; after the Sale of his Library in 1806 it came into the possession of Mr. STACE and the present Proprietor purchased it in December 1807.' London; 9 March to 7 April 1905. The collection as a whole is in good condition although lightly creased in places and somewhat dusty and aged. All items have unobtrusive pinholes and Item Seven has fraying and closed tears to extremities. An interesting correspondence casting light on publishing practices at the turn of the nineteenth century. ITEMS ONE TO FIVE: 12mo letters from Lucas's solicitors Field Roscoe & Co. each on the firm's letterhead to the 'Receiver and Manager appointed to carry on Richards' business' H. C. K. Stileman dated 9 11 18 and 21 March and 1 April 1905. ITEM SIX: unsigned one-page 12mo typescript copy of letter from Stileman of 10 March 1905 replying to Item One. ITEM SEVEN: one-page quarto typescript copy with manuscript additions and corrections of letter of 5 April 1905 from Richards to Field Roscoe & Co on his letterhead replying to Item Five. ITEM EIGHT: one-page octavo manuscript copy of letter of 7 April 1905 from Field Roscoe & Co. to Stileman. Item One is a three-page letter in which Lucas's solicitors point out that Stileman has 'been selling to booksellers' copies of 'The Open Road' despite the fact that 'the Copyright of this book is the property of Mr. Lucas who merely granted to Mr. Richards a personal licence to sell on certain terms. Such a right is of course not assignable. . We are at a loss to understand in respect of what right you have sold the volumes in question & as at present advised have informed Mr. Lucas that in our opinion the Sales are a breach of his copyright'. In Item Six Stileman replies 'I fail to see how any damage can have been done to your client in carrying out the arrangement . Am I to understand that it is your client's desire that no further copies should be sold' In Item Two two pages Lucas's solicitors ask for 'a list of all Sales with dates & the numbers of Copies sold & the names of the purchasers'. In Item Three one page they ask for the 'usual account'. In Item Four one page they ask for 'the statement upon which the half profit . is brought out at £29. 6. 10.' In Item Five three pages they ask whether Stileman intends to pay royalties on the books of Lucas Thomas Cobb and Thompson Seton. 'We may as well point out now that in our opinion upon no view of Lucas's case can the charge of £13. 2. 6 for lien be upheld - Your rights as receiver cannot be greater than those of Mr Grant Richards & he clearly could not have made such a deduction as against the author. It is in effect charging part of his general debts against this particular book.' In Item Seven Richards claims that the 'arrangement' corrected in manuscript from 'verbal agreement' was that 'Mr. Lucas was to have half profits on the sale of the book and as I had to pay lien in order to continue the sale I included it in the account.' He concludes by setting out conditions under which he is willing to delete the item. In Item Eight Lucas's solicitors dismiss 'the lien charge' as 'entirely wrong in principle': 'we cannot make its deletion dependent on the assent of the Trustee. You will doubtless communicate with the Trustee if you think it desirable for your own protection to do so but this has nothing to do with Mr. Lucas. . We had hoped by this time to have been able to tell you what we were prepared to do but we cannot get the figures we want from Mr. Moncrieff.' 'The Open Road' was published by Richards in 1899 and reprinted in 1904. An edition was published by Methuen the firm of which Lucas later became chairman in 1905. The owner realizing they are from the same book puts them together as best he can even though some of the pages are artfully torn by the artist to imitate the effects of rats gnawing through paper.<br /> <p><br /> This is the story of Gawain and the Loathly Lady Dame Ragnell. For Arthur's sake and safety Gawain wed her and when he did exactly the right thing the spell was broken she shed her ugliness and became beautiful. The sovereignty of women was the key.<br /> <p><br /> Dmitry Sayenko is a Ukrainian-born printmaker and book artist. His works are in private collections and in special collections in many countries. For this bit of artistry he cut over 50 blocks made the paper printed it with text and illustrations while damp and bound the books. The deep impression of the illustrations and the text on the handmade paper are superbly satisfying. His renderings of a morose Arthur a gallant Gawain a Lady with ugliness to spare and finally the beauty in the ending: these are a perfect match for the text.<br /> <p>. A New Hieroglyphic Bible; With Above Four Hundred Cuts
Edinburgh: Oliver & Boyd 1818. Hardcover. Very good. 12mo. 108pp. Publishers original drab brown cloth; upper board blocked in gilt with title within a floral design. Ink name on front pastedown. Cloth soiled binding lightly shaken gilt rubbed else a very good copy. The date of publication is taken from the Advertisement page 4. This seems to be the first Oliver and Boyd printing of a hieroglyphic Bible and the second Edinburgh printing after the Doig and Sterling edition of 1814. The accepted publicaton date for this Bible is 1818; three other known copies are known to have been issued either in quarter leather and marbled paper boards or in printed card covers. Our copy is in what is clearly publisher's cloth with gilt blocked on the upper board. This combination is unknown before 1826. It is likely then that the textblock while printed earlier was bound after 1826. Exceedingly scarce. Protected in a custom clamshell box. Oliver & Boyd hardcover
