‎AN ENGLISH VELLUM MANUSCRIPT LEAF, IN LATIN, FROM PETRUS RIGA'S "AURORA‎

‎TEXT FROM COMMENTARY ON I KINGS LINES 185-248‎

‎England ca. 1375. 287 x 198 mm. 11 1/4 x 7 3/4. Single column 32 lines in a small rounded English gothic hand with rubrics in the margins. <br/> Rubrics in red running title in red paragraph marks in red or blue two initials measuring two lines in height and colored blue with red penwork. See: P. E. Beichner "Aurora Petri Rigae Biblia Versificata A Verse Commentary on the Bible." ◆Remnants of mounting tape in top margin of recto but a really excellent specimen the hand very clear the ink especially rich and the vellum extremely clean and quite bright.<br/> <br/> Written in a gothic hand heavily influenced by the English secretarial style this leaf comes from a copy of the "Aurora" a commentary on the Bible in verse form written in the late 12th century by French poet Petrus Riga 1140-1209 a canon of Rheims cathedral. Although little is known about the author's life Riga's text became immensely popular throughout Europe and was routinely studied in Medieval universities. According to Beichner "for those who could read Latin it supplied Scriptural lore in a popular form and it also served as a book of popular theology devotional reading moral instruction and entertainment. Its influence was propagated by teachers preachers and lexicographers by poets and other writers. It was studied imitated translated and quoted. Not only was it widely read in monasteries and convents but it was also recommended reading for the sons of nobles." It is interesting to note that although Riga's work was copied numerous times in the 13th century copies from the later Medieval period such as the present work are uncommonly rare. The parent manuscript containing our leaf was previously in the possession of the Dukes of Westminster and was sold at Sotheby's on 11 July 1966 lot 229 when it was advertised as having 267 leaves missing the first gathering plus 13 other leaves. Bookseller Francis Edwards acquired the manuscript at that sale removed three damaged leaves and sold the remainder. It was thereafter broken up and dispersed. Several sister leaves are now in the collections of Marquette University Lawrence University and the University of South Carolina. unknown‎

‎[Log book of a nineteenth-century English [Kentish?] Master Brewer, 1841 to 1844]:‎

‎Brewing in Kent Manuscript volume of early Victorian English Kentish master brewer's dated records & calculations with brewery unknown but employees named and occasional memoranda.‎

‎Entries dated from 8 October 1841 to 14 May 1844. 8vo 249 pp. In original black leather blind-tooled binding marbled endpapers. The text clear and complete apart from a few leaves at the front and end which have faded through damp damage and one leaf becoming detached and worn at extremities. The damp has also detached the book from the binding the glue of which has dissolved. The only clue of the location of the brewery is the reference to 'Ramsgate' below. The volume consists almost exclusively of pages of closely-written dated calculations with pages giving number of barrels of 'Stocks pumped up' and 'left for next brewing'. Other repeated phrases include 'dipped No. 1 Copper'. The top of the pages usually carry a name or two names presumably of those employed in certain tasks that day. The number of names indicates a substantial concern: D. Amos James Amos Austen Baker Bays Bean Blackman Buss Corne Court Daniels Dunkin Hart Holton Long Mills Murton Newport Pierce Pile Read Sadleton Sankey Sharpe Sheather Smith Stocks Strout Tappenden Wise. Occasional memoranda written crosswise flesh out the volume. These include: 'Change of Yeast Got 12 Gs. from Towson 's Ramsgate which weighed 101 lbs. We were obliged to use the large tan for Hops back as the new back was not finished cannot well make out the difference between B worts & Hop worts unless it is that the rolls were set too close 12/11 Changed new Hop back with cold Legr. & find it holds a full 120 Barrels' 'Both Coppers and engine flues cleaned' and 'Very short down supposed to be Chas's manner of damping up as there is almost a difference of 10 Barrels between his & Geo's <hernings>'. A substantial missionary cookbook with 654 recipes many attributed. An additional 120 recipes appear in this second edition. Includes interesting short sections on cereals fruits and vegetables available in Rangoon markets and a practical nutrition guide titled "How Shall We Feed Our Babies" The recipes are a mixture of American dishes with a good number of global dishes including some from Armenia China quite a few Holland India again quite a few Indonesia Japan Italy Turkey and more; a far more international collection that one expects in a missionary cookbook. Dishes indicated as Burmese include Balachaung Buffadoo Duck Candied Pumpkin Chicken Kaukswe Cocoanut Blancmange Dohl Dohl Lthoke Fish Hilsa Curry Mok-si-kyo Nga-boung-doke Sa-nwin-ma-kin Seaweed Kyauk-Kyaw and more. The Chairwoman of the cookbook's Editorial Committee Mary Brewster Hollander calls out a few special contributors to the book including Allen Bloodworth of Mason Texas - then living in Burma who supplies his recipe for Texas Barbecue and the local Daw Thei Chone the "white-haired Burmese gentlewoman who could at once describe every step and ingredient of her unique preserved ginger. She's famous all over Burma for her wonderful ginger." The Chairwoman also indicates that all profits from the book "will be used for Community Service Projects."
