After the end of the prose work are two poems pp.11-12: ‘Hymn. / Frail Life and Succeeding Eternity’ and ‘The Danger of Delay.’ In addition to being the ‘Godfather of English Hymnody’ Watts was a noted logician producing a successful work on the subject and despite the repetition of the phrase ‘Time shall end!’ throughout the present extract treats the subject of ‘The End of Time’ in an unusually thoughtful way for a work of theology. For example: ‘Am I walking in a garden and do I stand to observe the slow motion of the shadow upon a dial there It passes over the hour lines with an imperceptible progress yet it will touch the last line of daylight shortly’. 13 January 1888. Acocks Green Birmingham. An interesting letter casting light on the Victorian provincial press. Scott’s entry in the Oxford DNB states that while he was living in Birmingham ‘H. J. Palmer offered him a staff appointment on the Birmingham Gazette; but he had to leave when he stipulated that as a Liberal he should write nothing in support of the Conservative cause. He was working again as a freelance when in 1887 he was invited by W. T. Stead to join him on the Pall Mall Gazette. He worked for six years on that paper under Stead and then Edward T. Cook.’ 4pp 12mo. On bifolium. In fair condition lightly aged. Folded once for postage. The final page is smudged including the signature which clearly reads ‘J. W. Robertson-Scott’ with a hyphen. Begins: ‘My dear Walters. / I heard a few days ago in a prominent B’ham politician’s family that the Gazette was going into Radical hands! - of course the Rad. Unions was mentioned. Are you able to put two and one together yet to the manufacturing of an aquaferous this word is original & patented theory as to Birmingha. Daily. ‘King of Redonda’: John Gawsworth English poet. Galley proof of his poem ‘Rest’ ‘Beneath the oaks the soldiers lie’ with one minor emendation.
No date 1940s. Stamped ‘FOR & ON BEHALF OF / THE NEW ENGLISH WEEKLY. / 15 REGENT’S PARK TERRACE / GULiver 3875’. On one side of a 12mo a piece of grey-green paper; creased worn and torn at the bottom. A fifteen-line poem in five three-line stanzas titled ‘REST’. At end: ‘JOHN GAWSWORTH’. Proof directions in pencil to convert a full-stop at the end of the fourth stanza to a comma. While the poet's attempt at direct simplicity verges on triteness one should recall that he served manfully in the RAF: ‘Beneath the oaks the soldiers lie / Staring at the open sky / Drowsily lazily. / Like England is this plot of green / But in the mountains all unseen / The guns’ complaint affects the scene. / Death is abroad this sunny day. / Life has no time for idle play: / Soon these will go their comrades’ way. / Meanwhile the oaks throw chequered shade / Upon the brows of many a blade / Still eager and still unafraid / And overhead the clouds scud on / Unto their own oblivion / Whence soon these men too will be gone.’ Apparently published in the Briarcliffe Quarterly - Volumes 1-12 - Page 50 1944 but Google don't even give a snippet. Georgiana Countess Spencer mother of Georgiana Duchess of Devonshire Copy in her Fair Hand of the "Ode by Mr Mason" Adapted William Mason poet divine correspondent of Walpole Gray etc.
May 1781. No. "59" in top corner from album of commonplace book. Entitled "Hope - to the Dutchess of Devonshire" an Ode to her daughter adapted from Mason's "Ode 13" or vice versa - see Note below. Four pages 4to aged but clear and complete fold mark right edge uneven and glue remnant from album of commonplace book presumably. Text begins: "What magic warblings to my Ear" and concludes 39 lines later if I've counted correctly itself in quotation marks "Nor will I quit thee at the grave". Another hand suspiciously resembling Georgiana Duchess of Devonshire's roughest hand has added the words "on reading his Ode to Hope" and adds to the end of the poem "This ode is in the hand writing of Georgiana Daughter of the Rt Honorable Stephen Poyntz married to John first Earl Spencer & mother of Georgiana Duchess of Devonshire". Georgiana Spencer became the Duchess of Devonshire upon marriage in 1774 presumably. See Images very readable. I found one reference to the first line of this Ode "Hope-to the Dutchess of Devonshire" via Googlebooks which recognised the first line "What Magic" in the Beinecke Library's Volume of first lines but now Googlebooks is denying that vision! BUT the Second verse of Mason's Ode XIII runs as follows: "What tender warblings to my ear On Zephyr's borne aspire To draw me from my sapphire sphere Charmed by her magic lyre I come; she wakes the willing strings With careless grace her hand she flings The soft symphonious chords among; Nor ever on the listening plain Since the sweet Lesbian tuned her strain." full text no. of stanzas in "The British Poets including Translations" Vol. LXXVI Mason vol.1 Chiswick 1822 pp.61-64. The earliest publication of this Ode pace Googlebooks seems to be 1811. I have yet to find an earlier publication date begging the question whether Mason wrote/published the version in British Poets before or after the tribute to Georgiana in which she is named. But "Ode XIII" could well be a tribute to her without naming. And perhaps Mason circulated a MS of the Poem before publication long before. May 1781. The International Exhibition of 1862: The Illustrated Catalogue of the Industrial Department p.87 issued to accompany the event states: 'The publishers of London show together in a collective case where may be seen some of the most luxurious volumes produced by the leading houses. The reprint of the first edition of Shakespeare; the Bibles of Bagster and Spottiswoode are also in this collection.' Founded by Samuel Bagster the elder 1772-1851 who was succeeded in the by his sons Samuel Bagster the Younger 1800-1835 and Jonathan Bagster 1813-1872 Bagster and Sons was renowned in the early nineteenth-century for bringing a wealth of rare scholarly Bibles and Liturgical texts to the mass market most notably Polyglot Bibles and reprints of early protestant translations by Tyndall Wycliff and Cranmer. Their efforts in producing affordable yet finely printed versions of Biblical texts allowed the Bagsters to pioneer the avoidance of the monopoly printing of the Authorized version. . 8vo. 2 volumes 4to however one volume is slightly larger than the other modern calf and boards printed in black leter and Roman types 2 1369-1417 & 2 1677-1689 pp. Last leaf in both volumes moderately worn and some repairs to one of those leafs pages in both volumes creased in the middle library plate on both front pastedowns early owners inscrpition on back of last leaf in one volume normal aging and browning; otherwise very good. This is a scarce item that was probably removed from a larger work however the sjubect is the same. Basically these acts focus on the seizure of lands during the English Civil War following the execution of Charles I in 1649 and just before the installation of Oliver Cromwell as Lord Protector in 1653. The text is primarily lists of nobility who remained loyal to the crown and whose lands were forfeited to the commonwealth for "treasons against the parliament and the people of England." Without date or place. London 1850s. Printed on one side of a piece of wove paper 32.5 x 24 cm. Text clear and complete on aged paper with chipping and closed tears to edges. The only copy of this title on COPAC is at the British Library folio 4 pp published by Zenas T. Purday where it is ascribed to Blewitt and tentatively dated to around 1850. Six eight-line stanzas with chorus 'Jump high jump low jumping we go.' Possibly written with satiric intent. Begins 'In Turkey there dwelt such a mighty Bashaw That whatever he did or said it was law; And he vow'd that his daughter should give her fair hand In marriage to one of a famed foreign land.' The second stanza explains that ' 'Mong the guests was a German Von Baron Bohmbig Who in Holland had purchased his shoes for this rig Which in speed should outvie even Mercury's wings And of Indian Rubber were made and with springs.' In the last stanza we learn that 'the Turks they do say His skeleton's jumping to this very day: - . And believe it or not for prove it I can 'Twas this which gave rise to the flying Dutch-man.' An Aging Composer H.V. Jervis-Read Lge archive of letters signed "HJR" or "Fitzjohn" or "F" as of Fitzjohn Avenue Hampstead to his mistress Brunhild 'Brynnie' Granger with a body of printed and ms material relating to his life and career.
Royal Academy of Music High Street & Fitzjohns Avenue Hampstead etc London various pleaces and hotels when he travels 1926-1934. An unusual survival the letters of a composer Harold Jervis-Read to his lover illustrating the growth of a relationship and an ability to express his feelings against the backcloth sometimes foreground of his musical activities and his marriage. Total of letters circa 350 three hundred and fifty Autograph Letters 118 one hundred and eighteen apparently complete letters many start and end abruptly dated 432 four hundred and thirty two pages with some APCSs mainly 12mo 1-8pp. each 55 of these letters dated 1933 and 30 dated 1934 1926-1928 comprising one letter only. There are more than 140 undated letters and a similar quantity of apparently incomplete letters no. of pages c.150. Subjects and quotes: 1926 his one night a week flatmate found him unconscious; a lot to do; her birthday; 1928 "can't write about 'intimate things'"; 1927 asking how he should react to something she's written hot or cold etc.; 1929 lost coat; health; illness; suggestion that relationship is on the edge; social life; compliments her "fine"; dinner invitation; "My piece for Oulston went well"; quotes to illustrate attitude to her "If of herself she will not love thee ."; she has obviously complained that he doesn't show enthusiasm recurrent theme; "joy of creation" but not the "joy of human communication"; his human shortcomings; she cannot appreciate the "Marcia Buffa" because of lack of appreciation of satire in her; his company described; leaving flat for good; moving to 29 High Street NW3; his obsession with her perhaps only soluble legally marriage; nature of love and their relationship recurrent theme; movements; reference to Margery - his wife see below; he'd sacrifice all for his children; Margery has no money "I earn at an artistic profession enough for six of them"; £160 per annum private income; he describes "the littleness of her perceptions" on family finances; 6 Oct. 1929 he's been writing a lot - "a violin sonata"; suggests she book a ticket for the Royal Academy of Music where a Recital of some of his work is to be given finishing with his "6tet by professional players"; she shies away; says he'll never write a quartet; busy; "Everything here is called a 'Practice' Concert unless the Principal is personally responsible for it"; Margery wife happy for him to see Brynnie - she's had a lover for more than two years "a rich doctor"; 25 Nov. 1929 "The Concert was a good success" Malvern; literary reference recurrent - part of his not being comfortable writing about emotions. Note: Subjects from now on avoiding the personal or the ups and downs and insecurities of a relationship unless very revealing of character. Subjects continued: 1930 invitation to the Norwich Festival; too much work at the Academy; asked to give lectures where he was asked to play some of his music; lecture is being printed; asks about her progress at work Are you an Almoner yethe doesn't ask her about her work much; lecturing in Bristol then the Wigmore; 1931 "written lots of good stuff"; "I write incessantly - music lectures letters of all sorts"; "controversy with Percy Scholes on Musical Appreciation . I love fighting these doctrinaire writers"; "various new things"; Academy Lecture; "I do not follow Mac P or anyone in my method of grouping! Feste underlined; Trinity Dublin catalogue guesses published in 1933 is out ."; his pupils; Elkin & Co.; Murdoch's about to publish "other things" beside Feste; would she type a lecture of his "wanted for publication"; received a proof of a piano sonata; at studio with private pupils; getting on with his "Elegiac Symphony" discussed at length; ex-pupil Robin Tucker "starting music publishing company a most daring and novel proposition"; he advises outlines problems discusses the works he has provided them with; 1932 glad she likes the "sonatina. I love playing for you: I feel you get inside the music. You know men always like my music more than women: I wonder why this is" - theory follows about "feminine not effeminate content"; asks her of she really wants a piano - which he will provide; Troubadours book; accuses her of game-playing - adding "the sett is now finished"; "I am mezzoforte only today"; "two lines in Fioretta" misunderstood by most; pays two rents c.£200 pa; his wife wrote to Brynnie's mother; "3 new private pupils at £2.2.0 per hour!"; recalls the Wagner Brunhilda; recalls meeting her at a concert; a bit of musical notation two others in other parts of correspondence; going to the Academy for a concert; received proofs of the new song 31 March; examining at the RC; numerous literary allusions some quotes; their options secret marriage etc; she is his "musical" inspiration; his reading; going to a concert expecting a violinist in the evening and commenting on proofs "the cover of Winter Tree"; someone commenting on his writings; reminiscences; temptations; several references to George Moore as if strong influence; recurrently cruel words; meets the singer of his sonatas Marjorie Grant; thinks of them as Heloise and Abelard repeated theme involving learned discussion; angry report on poor candidate not just playing but her smell; another was the opposite; his itinerary; compares his situation to Peter Warlock's - near suicide 25 July; two new songs; enjoyment of Welsh tour; 1934 "Ethel Smythe's music is an example of what happens to a woman when she seeks inspiration of man rather that sic of God . It is insufferably dull monotonous ." 6 March; encounter with policeman while loitering at night near her flat; he gets more expressive as time goes on - inhibition goes somewhat; jealous thoughts; planning to see her father marriage though his wife is capable of "any subterfuge" including private detectives; he writes as if she's wants to break up driving him to pleading; misery; the odd meeting referred to; his misery has interfered when he's working well and he's worried about becoming "a 'hack' conventional musician - which I am not"; only his "writing" is more important than her; finds northerners "sallow and ill-featured"; shown two articles about himself in musical periodicals 3 July; he's "finished his final movement" 8 Aug.; he's hardly ever discussed or referred to her work; proofs of his book arrive but he's not able to deal with them because of her and other factors; he quotes himself on the nature of music "music never discloses her ultimate secret"; last dated letter 9 Sept. 1934. WITH: A large quantity of typed and two autograph notes and letters drafts duplicates indicating second thoughts some or many abruptly ended or unfinished from Brynhild Granger to Jervis-Read which mirror Jervis-Read adding her own thoughts accusations words of love attendance at musical events responses to his music and information about her life. She gives reasons for not marrying at one point. AND: 10 ALSs two incomplete and/or damaged undated from Margery Jervis-Read wife of Harold Jervis-Read to Brynnie attempting to undermine the relationship between Harold and Brynnie discussing the situation and Harold's character he has "good points" but. "numerous love affairs he had had and always will have" her own affair etc suggesting that she should marry but not Harold and including references to meetings. NOTE: Brunhild Granger was a member of the "Ferguson Gang" see Wikipedia - a group of women raised money for the National Trust before the War characterised by masks and mystery and recently published Anna Hutton-North's book "Ferguson's Gang: the Maidens behind the Masks". Lettter dated 29 March 1869 no place. Book published at the Clarendon Press Oxford. 1868. Letter: 1p. 12mo. In fair condition lightly aged and creased. Attached by the blank second leaf of the bifolium to the reverse of the front free endpaper of the book. Envelope addressed by Tyrwhitt to 'Miss Bosworth Parks Town' tipped-in beside the letter. He is not sure whether she has a copy of 'my art-book' which she mentioned 'the other day'. 'If not will you kindly accept of this one tho I fear it is not a very good one in the illustrations' Book: xv 480pp. 8vo. Sixteen-page November 1868 publisher's catalogue at rear. Book in fair condition with signs of age and wear in worn publisher's black leather quarter-binding with burgundy cloth boards. Most of the illustrations in text but with coloured frontispiece and three other coloured prints and three sepia photographic prints. Inscribed on half-title 'With kind regards from R St John Tyrwhitt March 1st 1869'. Bookplate of William Bosworth amended to 'Annie from the Author'. Presented on the reverse of the frontispiece by Thomas Colmer 'great grandson of the Author' to his daughter Lucy Barbara Colmer. Lettter dated 29 March 1869, no place. Book published at the Clarendon Press, Oxford. 1868. hardcover
