‎Peggy Ramsay [Margaret Ramsay] [Margaret Francesca Ramsay, nee Venniker] (1908-1991), English theatrical agent [Jonathan Goodman‎

‎Peggy Ramsay theatrical agent Four Typed Letters Signed three 'Peggy Ramsay' and one 'Peggy R.' to Goodman giving her characteristically forthright opinion of his plays.‎

‎29 May 1955 and 5 and 12 March and 19 April 1956. All on letterheads of Margaret Ramsay Ltd Play Agent. All four items good on lightly aged paper. Two of the five leaves have small dog-ears to corners. Goodman has done his accounts on the blank reverse of one leaf. An important collection in which the most important British post-war play agent reveals in entertaining and increasingly-brusque terms the criteria by which she judges scripts. Goodman was hailed by Jacques Barzun as 'the greatest living master of true-crime literature' but his first love was as his obituary in the Daily Telegraph 16 January 2008 states the theatre. He began his career in 1951 'working at the Richmond Theatre first as a stage manager and then as a producer' before finding jobs in the West End. LETTER ONE 29 May 1955: 4to 2 pp; 8vo 1 p. A hundred and twenty lines of hurriedly-written text with autograph additions and corrections. She has read Goodman's play 'Willow Weep For Me' sent to her by Bill Roderick. She begins by outlining her method. 'My clients are so used to the bitter truth about their plays that I am inclined to think that everybody is prepared for it - clearly I must warn you as I don't suppose Bill did! Away with compliments! If I didnt think you had real talent I wouldnt bother to tell the truth but simply return you your script with a polite non-commotal sic phrase. I will move on to criticism immediately as its the only thing which will get you produced.' Goodman is 'obviously a writer who writes from within himself - very right and proper but as you know play writing exacts every kind of talent - involvement subjectivity objectivity planning creation etc etc.' There follows a detailed critique of Goodman's play with particular reference to Tennessee Williams's 'Cat on a Hot Tin Roof'. '. I must skip saying a hundred thing sic because I have no time to write and you havr sic no time to read'. She urges him to decide 'what "great truth" you wish to rest your play upon . Your bridge-party at the end of act one is very bad technically - why should the husband leave his guests downstairs to follow him up - simply because you wanted the husband in first - you cant do this kind of thing. You must let one of them have a car and be parking it or any excuse you like - but tax yourself be ingenious! Really nothing is too good for a play! My advice to you is to put this play in a bottom drawer and forget it. Managers arent interested in potential talent they want a play - and you dont want flattery surely You want a play on the highest level not a piddling little try-out which is all your play could possibly get and I doubt if that would be possible without influence. . Ive no doubt Liverpool has ben sic nice because its always something of a miracle when a friend can write at all or a fellow actor - but you are undertaking the most difficult form of writing there is - where planning discipline creation objectivity subjectivity are all mixed up and none of these things can be neglected.' She will be 'coming up to see Stokers musical' and will return his script then. LETTER TWO 5 March 1956: 4to 1 p. The play he has sent 'Chopsticks in Waltztime' is 'an improvement but I expect you know that it isn't good enough for London'. Goodman still seems to have 'dialogue diarrhoea' and should try and 'discipline' himself more 'or else turn to writing novels . You wrote to me about a plot which I thought rather dank - this is one of your failings all your plots seem a bit dank! That no doubt is your youth. . Don't be depressed. This is only my opinion and please seek opinions elsewhere before taking mine as gospel.' LETTER THREE 12 March 1956: 4to 1 p. Explains what she means by 'dank': 'sordid without being exciting - a sort of dreary realism'. 'I'll read your new play with interest but I hope the title doesn't mean it's about a woman changing into a man or vice versa because if so you may be sure hat I shall detest it. This kind of social problem is quite unsuited to dramatic treatment - but I hope I'm maligning you and misconstruing the title!' LETTER FOUR 19 April 1956: 4to 1 p. She has 'taken a long time' over Goodman's play 'chiefly because the title was so awful I couldn't bring myself to read it!' Suggests he 'try submittinng this to some other agent' as 'it may be that I am too tough on you.' Goodman has talent and the play is 'in some ways rather amusinng but all those sex jokes are to me not funny but smutty. Try some theatre or other agent and see how you fare and do please let me know how you are getting on.' 29 May 1955, and 5 and 12 March and 19 April 1956. All on letterheads of Margaret Ramsay Ltd, Play Agent. unknown‎

‎H A L Fisher [Herbert Fisher; Herbert Albert Laurens Fisher] (1865-1940), English historian and Warden of New College, Oxford [W‎

‎Two Autograph Letters Signed both 'Herbert Fisher' to 'My dear Gore' the first conferring upon him an honorary fellowship and the second containing an assessment of Ormsby-Gore's son David.‎

‎7 October 1936 and 12 March 1937; both on letterheads of 'The Warden's Lodgings New College Oxford'. Both items good on lightly-aged paper. Letter One: 4to 1 p. Begins 'The College today at its Special General Meeting did itself the honour of electing you to an Honorary Fellowship. We trust that it may not be unacceptable to you to be thus associated with our Society. There are no duties save that of wearing a surplice in Chapel on Sundays and Feasts of the Church.' He thanks Gore for his 'generous words' of the previous day. Letter Two: 4to 2 pp. He thanks him for his 'helpful letter about David' Gore's son the Conservative politician William David Ormsby-Gore 5th Baron Harlech 1918-1985 and consequently raises no objection 'to his being out of College in the Autumn' which 'may well prove to be the best thing for him'. The previous day David told Fisher 'that he was anxious to go into the House of Commons as soon as possible'. Fisher 'can see from his appreciation of Thucydides and de Tocqueville which is obviously genuine that his mind is taking a political shape.' He sees 'gleams of unusual promise about the boy' and thinks that 'As his physical strength improves and as the memories of those shocks to which you allude fade into the background . he will gain in confidence and concentration'. Characterises him as being at that time 'wayward elusive casual rather than idle decidedly <> with occasional touches of brilliance extremely sensitive and reserved' and with 'a certain distinction of nature'. He 'gave up the Hebdomadal Council' after his illness the previous year and does not know 'what is afoot about Honorary Degrees'. 7 October 1936 and 12 March 1937; both on letterheads of 'The Warden's Lodgings, New College, Oxford'. unknown‎

‎The late proceedings of The Scottish Army: As also the taking of Cannon Froome. Certified By an Expresse from his Excellencies Quarters the Earle of Leven Lord Generall. Dated at Ludbury the 23. of July 1645. Together with other Letters from the Kings Quarters to the Generall and Lieutenant-Generall and Answers thereunto‎

‎London: Printed by M. B. for Robert Bostock 1645. 2 6pp. Modern navy morocco lettered in gilt to spine T.E.G. Marbled endpapers early alternate manuscript pagination to upper corners. With a loosely inserted letterpress receipt from bookseller Frank Hammond addressed to Lord Cottesloe acknowledging payment of £12 for the book in 1961. The sole edition of a decidedly uncommon news-book account of the actions of the Army of the Solemn League and Covenant - led by veteran Scottish Army officer Alexander Leslie 1st Earl of Leven c.1580-1661 - in the summer of 1645 reporting most particularly on their taking of a royalist garrison within the moated house at Cannon Froome Herefordshire. Following the defeat of a Royalist rebellion against the Covenanting-led Scottish Government in the Spring of 1645 the Scottish army of the Solemn League and Covenant - named after the 1643 treaty between the reforming parliaments in England and Scotland- led by the Earl of Leven marched south to assist their allies. As this news-book reports a 'party of 4500 Horse Foot and Dragoons' en route to Hereford became aware of a Royalist garrison led by 'Governor Colonell Barnold' in the small Herefordshire village of Castle Froome. After the Royalist commander refused to surrender the moated house which had been reinforced with Irish volunteers after the battle of Newark Leven the 'Lieut. Generall.gave order for storming the place'. The heat of the battle is described thus from a purely Roundhead perspective: 'The Grasses were about nine foot deep and as broad and in most places full of water; The Works above the Grasses were so high that all the Ladders we could get were too short; the Enemy behaved themselves valourously but it pleased the Lord to give our Souldiers to much courage that after a hot dispute they were beate from their works after which they fled to the house where they fought desparately till a great part of them were killed. We lost about 16. and 24. are wounded; of the Enemy were killed about 70. Colonell Barnold deadly wounded Captain Briskoe Capt. Houke & thirty others taken Prisoners.' ESTC records copies at just seven locations in the British Isles Advocates Library BL Hereford Cathedral Newcastle NLS Oxford Trinity College Dublin and just three further elsewhere California State Harvard Texas and Yale. Provenance: Recently dispersed from the Cottlesloe Military Library 'probably the most extensive private collection of early printed books focused on military matters'. ‎William Thomas Moncrieff English playwright and theatre manager. Autograph Letter Signed inviting to the Irish singer and composer Tom Cooke to collaborate on a production at the Victoria Theatre.‎

‎3 November 1835; Victoria i.e. the Victoria Theatre London. See the two men’s entries in the Oxford DNB. 2pp 12mo. Bifolium. Aged and a little worn with short closed tear at head of the first leaf repaired with tape and the second leaf having a discoloration at one edge from tape used in mount. Signed ‘W. T. Moncrieff’. Casting interesting light on the production of melodramas in the ‘Surrey-side’ theatres. In an effort to induce him to collaborate with him on a production at the Victoria Theatre he begins: ‘My dear Cooke / Without wishing to interfere with any arrangement you may have made or may be contemplating to make - there can be no harm in my dropping a hint that the Proprietors here would be most happy to secure your Services at any time on your own terms - if at all within their means’. Such an arrangement would also please Moncrieff ‘as I have the idea of a Drama that I think very likely to prove quite as attractive as ever “My Poll and my Partner Joe†may prove.’ That play by J. T. Haines and with music by Jolly was a great success at the Royal Surrey Theatre in the same year. He ends by asking Cooke to ‘turn this over in hyour mind at your leisure and favor me with a line on the subject’. 3 November 1835; Victoria [i.e. the Victoria Theatre, London]. unknown‎

‎Lawrence Hyde (b1894, fl 1954), English journalist and spiritual philosopher [Herbert George Wood; Quaker; Society of Friends;‎

‎Lawrence Hyde b.1894 fl. 1954 English journFour Autograph Letters Signed two in full and two as 'L. H.' to the biblical scholar and Quaker theologian Herbert George Wood 1879-1963 first Professor of Theology at the University of Birmingham.‎

‎Between 1930 and 1931; all four on letterhead Rosedean Cottage Shipley Sussex. All items very good on lightly aged paper. Four closely written and interesting communications on his writings and philosophy. LETTER ONE 16 June 1930 2 pages 12mo: On the question of 'that misunderstanding regarding our last visit' the rest of the month is 'booked up' but 'perhaps the postponement - I hope it is no more than that! - of our coming may not be a bad thing'. Since their last meeting he has been 'passing through a phase of extensive internal adjustment the physical aspect of which has taken the form of very bad health'. He has 'hardly written a line' and it is 'a time for me of extreme introversion and apathy and I am really not fit to appear in society!'. Although 'friend Halliday would probably be sceptical regarding the fact' 'it is one of the things to be expected on the rather curious path which I am following'. When he emerges hopes to 'dash off in fairly rapid succession' essays on humanism and religion. Is on friendly terms with Hugh Fausset Hugh l'Anson Fausset 1895-1965 English poet and religious writer 'whom I admire greatly and whose religious development is I think going to be remarkably interesting'. Asks how Wood and his colleagues 'got on with Rabindranath' Tagore 1861-1941 Indian poet: 'I gather that he was a bit of a nuisance!' LETTER TWO 28 October 1930 2 pages 12mo: Responding to an invitation from Wood he is looking forward to a visit to the Quaker educational settlement at Woodbrooke: 'I might have the delightful experience of posting off the MS and then stepping into the train for Woodbrooke for a badly needed rest'. Discusses possible itinerary. Referring to Wood himself hopes that he and his wife Lorna will 'see something of the Professor of Theology and the Philosophy of Religion at the Selly Oak College'. LETTER THREE 14 March 1931 three pages 12mo: Announces the publication of his 'Prospects of Humanism'. 'I shall of course be very interested to hear what impression it makes upon you.' Hopes Wood will review it. He is 'far from satisfied' with the book which 'bears the marks of having been written during a period of strain'. His thoughts 'have already turned to Op. III by which I shall stand or fall in the end'. Three paragraphs discuss the 'Kosman Church' on the subject of which Hyde can 'quite sympathise' with Wood's 'uneasiness': 'My aim . is to define the conditions which in my opinion will have to be complied with by a truly modern Religion'. Asks if Wood has seen Geoffrey Heard's 'Ascent of Humanity': 'in a large measure it expresses the same type of consciousness with which Fausset John Middleton Murry 1889-1957 and myself are so directly concerned in our different ways'. LETTER FOUR 2 April 1931 three pages 12mo: Is pleased with Wood's 'favourable verdict on the Prospects'. 'You are one of the few whose judgement I trust in these matters and your appreciation is one of the things that helps me to go on'. Is happy that Wood considers his book better than its predecessor and discusses the two books. Is glad that Wood feels that he has 'sounded the Quaker note': 'this brings us together'. Feels that the author of 'that extraordinarily hostile notice in the Times. Literary. Supplement. 'at least did me a service by taking two columns to dismiss me!' Enjoyed Hoyland's essay and asks how Wood's own book is progressing. He 'will not anticipate' the arguments in his 'Opus III': 'I am philosophically a resolute Occidental!' He refuses to 'entertain the idea that matter is evil' and believes 'firmly' in progress. Discusses some recent essays by Middleton Murry. Discusses the 'Nation' and 'Everyman' the editor of the latter having 'asked me to give him some of my new book in the form of articles'. Also included is a Typed Note Signed to Wood from Horace Fleming Honorary Warden on the letterhead of the Mary Ward Settlement 20 March 1931 sending Hyde's book. Between 1930 and 1931; all four on letterhead Rosedean Cottage, Shipley, Sussex. unknown‎

‎Whitwell Elwin; Quarterly Review Autograph Letter Signed 'Whitwell Elwin' to 'Miss Mayne'.‎

‎29 September 1856; Booton Rectory Norwich. 12mo 1 p 17 lines. Very good. He has been 'from home visiting here & there' and has returned to 'a mass of correspondence which is perfectly appalling'. He is sorry she 'sent back the book' as he meant her 'to keep it in perpetuity'. 'The recent work which finds most favour with the public is Lord Cockburn's Memorials. It is entertaining but not in all respects accurate. It is however worth reading & will serve to beguile a winter's evening. I dare sayy the autumn & Christmas which are the great publishing seasons will produce something tolerable.' Ends by thanking her for the account she gives of her 'travels'. The recipient of this letter may have been the author under the pseudonym 'Leslie Gore' of the Bentley three-decker 'Annie Jennings' 1870. 29 September 1856; Booton Rectory, Norwich. unknown‎

‎Dorothy Black (Delius) (1899-1985), English romantic novelist, travel and short-story writer [Ladies' Home Journal; Eimar O'Duff‎

‎Dorothy Black Delius romantic novelist Typed Letter Signed 'Dorothy Black' to Kathleen Cruise O'Brien O'Duffy the wife of the Irish writer Eimar O'Duffy.‎

‎26 June 1925; La Chaumiere Shillong Assam. 4to: 3 pp. Text clear and entire on creased chipped airmail paper. A chatty vivacious and entertaining letter casting light on the state of mind of an English colonial wife. Thanks her for her 'kind remarks about my stories. May I say in return that I also like your story very much and it appears to have what all the Editors are clamouring for all the time - a happy ending!' Congratulates O'Duffy on her marriage 'You say they told you that you were mad to get married and without a certain amount of madness I do not see how any of us would ever take that awful step!' But you were not half as mad as people who marry for money or position or a shooting in Scotland or a motor car or a diamond tiara'. The Blacks 'live as a rule in Rangoon Burma a very hot place indeed where beads of honest sweat decorate every brow all the time.' Finds 'the opportunity of giving a description of herself a rare and glorious one!' Gives a physical description she has 'the slightly wilted appearance of all women who have to live in the Tropics for any length of time' and describes her career as a journalist before marriage. 'I used to look down from the tops of busses into motor cars where the Really Wealthy sat and think how nice life must be from the back seat of a Rolls. And when last I was in England I sat in the back seat of a Sunbeam and looked up onto the top of the passing busses and thought what fun life could be on 2d all the way. If you are still fairly poor remember that. I am not sure one does not get a great deal more pleasure on 2/6d saved up than on trips to Paris when expense is no object. I have tried both and this is my candid opinion.' Explains how 'the only story I ever more or less lived is Marcia's'. 'For last summer I had been working very hard and one day I put a suit case into the back of my two seater Standard and threw my children to the Nurse and went off into the blue.' She has no photograph to send 'I have as I already said one of those Noses.' but says that there is a photograph of her in the June number of the Ladies' Home Journal. As for her age her seven-year-old son says she is twenty-one 'or at the very most . she may be twenty-two'. 'Shall we leave it at that It is so much kinder.' Wishes she could visit O'Duffy at Daffodil Cottage. 'Here we are perched so to speak upon the kettle lid of the world.' Mentions earthquake jungle jackals. 'And it rains rains rains and the newspapers say "The Monsoon is progressing satisfactorily in Assam."' Short autograph postscript. 26 June 1925; La Chaumiere, Shillong, Assam. unknown‎

‎Whitwell Elwin (1816-1900), English journalist, editor of the 'Quarterly Review':‎

‎Whitwell Elwin; Quarterly Review Three Autograph Letters Signed all three 'W. Elwin' to historian Alexander William Kinglake 1809-1891.‎

‎1875 1883 1887; all three from Booton Rectory Norwich. All three letters 12mo and closely written. All three with rusted pinholes at head. A valuable correspondence in which one of Victorian England's leading critics describes his response to the work of one of the age's foremost historians. LETTER ONE 1 page 26 lines good: He thanks Kinglake for sending his 'new volume' of 'The Invasion of the Crimea'. 'I am reading it with great delight. The work to me is unique both in military & literary history. I never read a book before which gave a description of a battle in all its parts so as to convey a true picture of what a battle really is.' Continues in the same vein laying on the praise. 'Many of the passages are full of pathos & grandeur & when I read them aloud in our domestic circle thehy stirred the hearts of old & young alike.' Concludes 'If the work were far less distinguished for its intellectual beauties it would deserve immortality for its fearless honesty. An author who loves nothing better than truth is rare.' LETTER TWO 2 pages 33 lines good: Another paean of praise beginning 'I find your new preface delightful for its contents & the vigour & felicity of the language. Newspapers write more & more in superlatives & exaggerate everything for the sake of effect. I suppose we have all felt this in the accounts of the Egyptian Campaign .'. Discusses Lord Bury and 'one of the most comical instances on record of a man digging a pit for another & falling into it himself. I never saw Lord Bury but once & then only for an instant but I know his father & the family calibre. With sundry good qualities to be a little weak a little vain & a politician for what you can get runs I think in the blood.' Returns to Kinglake's 'volume' in the last paragraph with yet more praise. LETTER THREE two pages 27 lines with some wear at foot affecting a couple of words of still-decipherable text: He has read Kinglake's letter 'with a pride & pleasure greater than you yourself probably feel at the completion of your masterly work. The modes of treating history were hacknied & did not seem capable of much novelty. I know scarce anything inn fiction more original than yours & the originality has everywhere tended to one end . I look upon your history as absolutely unique . <If> it had been a war far less memorable in its consequences it would have been rendered memorable by its historian .'. 1875, 1883, 1887; all three from Booton Rectory, Norwich. unknown‎

‎'Eric Broad' (Frederic E Wright), English poet [W Kineton Parkes; John Ruskin; William Marwick; the Ruskin Reading Guild]:‎

‎'Eric Broad' Frederic E. Wright poet Three Autograph Letters Signed two 'Eric Broad/Frederic E Wright.' and one 'Frederic E Wright/Eric Broad.' to W. Kineton Parkes assistant editor of the journal of the Ruskin Reading Guild 'Igdrasil'‎

‎20 and 22 January and 3 March 1890; all from Scarsdale Great Malvern. All three items in very good condition. Interesting series of letters by an obscure 1890s poet. Letter One 12mo 7 pp: Although he realises that some are 'rather poor' he is sending through his brother possibly the artist Alan Wright 1864-1959 'all the lyrics I have by me': 'I have not had time to "weed" yet being veryy busily engaged writing lyrics for a Comedy-Opera 'Ethelinda or a Philanthropic Fad' 1890 on which he collaborated with Hamilton O. Wylde - & a libretto for Operetta; also been trying my hand at very sensational prose'. He has 'quite forgotten' the poem 'Yesterday': 'There is a lyric in the brown-paper-covered book "But Yesterday" - but I do not know if that is the one.' He will 'submit a Sonnet or something to "Igdrasil" shortly'. He misses 'Comus' a magazine edited by Parkes 1888-9: 'as there was always something to attract one in it - more than can be said for most mushroom-papers do forgive the epithet - it was not intended of this era'. He has been 'rather shakey' 'suffering with nicotine poisoning of the lower lip'. He is sending Parkes the 'last collection of my verses' entitled 'In Idle Hours' no copy on COPAC. 'It is coverless - Pardon that - I trust the inside will gain your favour. It is out of print - & only 12 copies were printed. Three on rough-edged paper - others as this one. It is I regret one of the follies of a year past. Cavil not therefore O Critic - but pity the poor deluded youth!' Letter Two 12mo 1 p: Parkes's 'friend may like to see the enclosed lyrics not present - which I have just written.' Letter Three 12mo 4 pp: Apologises for asking for the return of his lyrics 'safe to hand to night'. 'The Composer I sent to however was hard to please: in fact I was unable to do business with him'. He has a 'little collection of Sonnets . in the press' nothing on COPAC under either Broad or Wright. Wonders whether Parkes will 'put the Sonnet "Igdrasil" in the magazine of that name'. 'I suppose "Comus" will appear again "pro bono publico" - I have been writing short stories lately for which I seem to have a slight gift.' In fact my first was well received by a large firm & I am awaiting further hearing from them.' Hopes he may send 'anything in the poetry-line for insertion in "Igdrasil" as I shall submit nothing but what is worthy of my best attempts'. In a postscript reports that the libretto on which he has been collaborating see above is 'now musically complete' and 'on the eve of printing prior to copyrighting. It is of novel & original plot & action.' 20 and 22 January and 3 March 1890; all from Scarsdale, Great Malvern. unknown‎
