‎Jessica Brett Young [nee Hankinson], (1883-1970), wife of the English novelist Francis Brett Young (1884-1954):‎

‎Jessica Brett Young widow of novelist Francis Brett Young. Four Autograph Letters Signed to 'Mr Jackson' 'Manager Heinemann & Cassell' discussing her husband's copyrights in an energetic style with notes on the writing of 'My Brother Jonathan'‎

‎All four on letterheads of the Mount Nelson Hotel Cape Town. Written in October and November 1967. The first three letters each 1p. 4to; and the fourth 2pp. 4to. In good condition on aged and creased paper with three of the four letters stapled together. Letter One: 13 October 1967. She writes 'for information about my position concerning my late husband's books and my Biography of him which Heinemann's published in London in 1962'. The closing of the firm's Cape Town office has been a shock to her. Letter Two: 4 November 1967. Note in top left-hand corner: 'This is the 3686th letter since May 1963 - 80% of which are to publishers & David Higham my Literary agent.' She would like six copies of her biography of her husband. 'The Revival of his books is very pleasing & my correspondence increases all the time.' Letter Three: 5 November 1967 '3687th letter'. Her husband's 'most popular book' 'My Brother Jonathan' has just been republished and she has received six copies. 'They unfortunately let 17 titles out of print & a Birmingham firm "Cambridge Ltd" took over the 17 & have been reprinting in photostat 2 copies a year.' Letter Four: 12 November 1967. She has been 'under doctor's orders & overloaded with correspondence. She wants the copies of the 'latest Reprint' of 'My Brother Jonathan' as she is 'sending copies to "The Cape Times" "The Cape Argus" & "Die Burger". She concludes the first page of the letter by stating that she is 'enclosing notes on the life of the book'. These notes cover whole of the second page beginning: 'My Brother Jonathan just republished by Heinemans for the 23rd. Edition. Francis told me the whole outline of the story that had lain in his subconscious mind for more than 20 years. In January 1928 it was finished after less than 4 months work with 140372 words. In 1948 the Film was having splendid notices in London & in the same year it was shown for the first time in Cape Town at The Colosseum.' She concludes by discussing the film's reception in Cape Town. Jessica Brett Young's papers are now in the University of Birmingham. All four on letterheads of the Mount Nelson Hotel, Cape Town. Written in October and November 1967. unknown‎

‎Oswald Partridge Milne (1881-1968), English architect [The Royal Society of Arts]:‎

‎Oswald Partridge Milne architect Collection of around 27 Typed Letters Signed and 17 Autograph Letters Signed to K. W. Luckhurst Secretary and other officers of the Royal Society of Arts together with some drafts and copies of responses.‎

‎1936-65; Wigmore Street and Hampstead London. The collection is in good condition with very occasional minor creasing staining and loss. Majority of items quarto. Milne was a leading Fellow of the Society a Chairman of Council in 1959-61 and Vice-President. The collection provides a valuable insight into the day-to-day workings of the Society from the first letter discussing the R.I.B.A. and whether the Society might set up 'a somewhat similar organisation with similar prestige could be built up for industrial artists' to the last letter commending G. C. H. Chubb on his inaugural address as Chairman of Council 'I hope you will be able to interest industrial Companies etc to associate themselves with the R.S.A.'. Most items are signed 'Oswald P. Milne'. An important aspect of the correspondence concerns repairs and redecorations to the Society's premises at 19 John Street Adelphi which Milne appears to have superintended and for which it seems from a letter of 3 January 1940 he was made a presentation by the Society. In these letters he liases with J. W. Falkner & Sons Ltd acting on the Society's instructions and discussing the builders' quotations and other practical aspects of the work. Milne also gives his opinion 1 April 1942 on the competing claims of Messrs Vanstone and Veale and Sanders for acting as Surveyors on the work. Also present is an initialed carbon of the letter 19 May 1942 to which this letter responds from the Acting Secretary discussing the 'thorny problem'. 'A good deal of unpleasantness is being caused . It would appear that Vanstones do not propose to give way in the matter and Veale and Sanders do not propose to admit the claim.' 1936-65; Wigmore Street and Hampstead, London. unknown‎

‎Walter W. Robinson English composer Collection of thirteen Autograph Letters Signed addressed to Robinson by various individuals mostly relating to the publication of Robinson's song 'Gently Down the Stream'.‎

‎London; 1871-1878. The collection is in good condition with each letter entirely legible. Two items particularly aged and one with a couple of closed tears unobtrusively repaired with archival tape. Each item bears evidence of the fact that the collection was previously held together with a pin. An interesting sidelight into the musical culture of Victorian London. COPAC only locates one copy at Cambridge of Robinson's piece published by W. Sprague of Westminster in 1874 copied by F. C. Wood 'words by permission of Messrs. Hopwood & Crew'. All items 12mo. ITEM ONE one page with slight loss at head: 'Willm Haslam' of 41 Middleton Road Dalston to 'Master Robinson' 21 March 1871. He will not require 'the services of yourself & Friend - on Thursday at Hounslow'. ITEM TWO one page: Theodore Distin 'Theo Distin' to Robinson 28 March 1872. 'I shall be happy to sing for you for whatever you can afford to give - & be pleased to help you in any way'. He will also 'look over' Robinson's 'Hymn': 'I have not yet had time'. Distin member of a family of musical entertainers is notable as the man who brought the first of Adolphe Sax's Sax Horns to Britain. ITEM THREE one page: 'Chas. F. Combe' of 17 Westbourne Terrace North Bayswater to Robinson. Offers to engage Robinson in employment and gives details in four parts. ITEM FOUR one page: Combe to Robinson. 'I find I shall be obliged to make an attendance at S. Olaves at the end of the present quarter There appears to be a feeling which we cannot quite overcome - . I write therefore to tell you that I shall be obliged to terminate your engagement at the expiration of your next month . I am sorry I have been unable to offer you a better position .'. ITEM FIVE one page: Letter of Robinson 'W. W. Robinson Jnr.' 64 Murray Street New North Road Hoxton to firm of music publishers asking whether you may 'use the words of one of your songs entitled "Gently down the Stream" for new music seeing no Writers name to sic the words. . I am anxious to get it Published'. Undated reply from individual with indecipherable signature one page on reverse stating 'If you have any desire to be implicated in a suit at law by all means make use of the words of the song published by Messrs Hopwood & Crew they have nothing to do with us'. ITEM SIX two pages: Letter to Robinson from 'F. C. WOOD Lithographical Music Copyist 32 VINCENT SQUARE WESTMINSTER S.W.' 27 October 1873 on Wood's letterhead giving an estimate 'for 2 pages of music & title'. 'My former estimate was for 12 stave pages & I see by putting the song on 1 page 15 staves will be required . Work done by this system is always cleaned off the stones as soon as finished so that the entire number of copies is likely to be required are always ordered at once. This makes it so much cheaper than engraving. Proofs also cannot be given but accuracy is insured by my having a correct copy & thoroughly examining the work before printing a single copy. If your copy is correct you need have no fear.' Discusses details of legal deposit and asks to be informed on some matters relating to the song. 'What will you do . You may depend on the work being thoroughly well done.' ITEM SEVEN two pages: Wood to Robinson 30 October 1873. 'I always enquire whether copies sent me are correct because proofs not being given it is not at all likely I can take responsibility of mistakes in copies sent me. When I have a good copy to work from parties need not fear for my work because I take good care to do it right. But as you seem rather fearful of the result I have taken the trouble to copy the whole out and send it herewith for your approval. NOT PRESENT Please see if it is correct & the music arranged as you desire to the two verses and if you return it at once I shall at once proceed. You will thus see that I have done all that can be expected to insure correctness & if I can turn out 70 pages of Band music with only the omission of one crescendo - and no mistakes surely 2 pages may be done properly.' ITEM EIGHT two pages: Wood to Robinson 10 November 1873. Sends receipt for his work of £1. 8. 6 and undertakes to forward a receipt from Stationers' Hall for five shillings. 'I am glad you are satisfied with the work as in fact I was sure you would be. But I am sorry to say theh work is cleaned off the stones. It is always so to make way for other work.' Offers to copy another hundred at £1. 4. 0. Signed receipt on verso of second leaf of bifolium. ITEM NINE one page: Margaret Bucknall 21 York Place Newport to Robinson. 'My sundays are all arranged for! Many thanks for so kindly offering to help me.' ITEM TEN four pages: F. T. Barnard 9 Cambridge Terrace Salcombe Road Sidmouth Devonshire to Robinson 19 August 1876. 'The Wedding takes place on Saturday next at Eleven o'Clock. Play some thing bright and pretty until the Bride arrives upon her arrival at Altar finish immediately. After ceremony whilst they are in Vestry similar music leading into Wedding March.' Gives further instructions and asks Robinson to discuss with the verger. 'Respecting terms of course it ought to be One Guinea ask about it and try hard for it but if any demur is made do not object as something was mentioned to me a short time since about obliging a friend for such a ceremony but I gave no decided answer; of course I being away alters the case . but take what is offered and I will arrange with you afterwards'. ITEM ELEVEN two pages: Distin of 96 Penrose Street Sutherland Square S.E. to Robinson 2 January 1877. He is pleased Robinson has 'succeeded in gaining the appointment' and hopes 'it may be only the beginning of a successful Career for you. & if my word has been the means of helping you towards it I am very pleased.' Thinks it 'rather strange' that he has 'not yet heard from Ryle who promised to send me my Fee "sharp."' ITEM TWELVE two pages: F. Jones 'per RG.' 27 Doynton Street Highgate New Town N.W. to Robinson 22 June 1878. Thanks him 'on behalf of my troupe' for sending 'Gently down the Stream' with band parts 'which we shall have the greatest pleasure in singing at our next entertainment; I with-held myself from writing before as I wished to put your letter &c before a special committee last evening they unanimously thanked you for your great kindness and agreed to have the song tried by the band this evening; they the band tried it & the Musical Director & the whole of the Troupe pronounced it a very pretty and suitable song'. Asks if Robinson would insert 'on the title page of a new edition "As sung by Mr. R. S. Austin of the original Lilian Minstrels". I have Grafton Hall Grafton Street Tottenham Ct. Road in view for our next concert'. ITEM THIRTEEN one page: Jones again 'per RG. to Robinson 9 July 1878. He 'cannot get Grafton Hall for a Saturday evening which night is most convenient for the vocal portion of my troupe the majority of which reside out of London.' Consequently he intends 'suspending all further concerts till September' but will let Robinson know if the Troupe perform before then. London; 1871-1878. unknown‎

‎Murray Adams-Acton (1886-1971), English historian of art and architecture:‎

‎Murray Adams-Acton Thirteen Typed Letters Signed to G. K. Menzies Secretary Royal Society of Arts with one Autograph Note Signed to Menzies and a printed prospectus for Adams-Acton's 'Domestic Architecture and Old Furniture'.‎

‎5 October 1927 to 14 August 1933; most on letterhead of Acton Surgey Ltd. 'London Paris & Crews Hill'. Sizes range from quarto nine items to 12mo two items. Very good. Subjects include a request for 'a photograph of the winning design for the petrol filling station' the award of a Hyde Travelling Scholarship 'Mr. Mitchell appears to have so greatly distinguished himself' 'Mr. Bossom's suggestions for the wording and particulars for the Proscenium opening for Cinema' the drafting of a reply to Morley Horder's comments 'he errs when he declares the screen is not of the period as I think only a small section of it was added by Mr. Beresford Pite a few years ago' and Sydney Bernard Burney 'I am putting up Mr. Sydney B. Burney for election . Mr. Burney has a very high clientele among the various museums in England and abroad and specialises in early and archaic sculptures'. A letter of 21 September 1931 one page 12mo on letterhead of Alderbourne Manor concerns a review in the Society's journal by John Gloag which Adams-Acton feels 'demands an answer'. 'When presumably a sane critic states that the "great designers of the twentieth century" are men like Gimson Heal etc. and no mention is made of those who have really assisted the growth of English design such as Sir Charles Allom and others I feel there is some justification for the reply'. An autograph postscript reads 'Collecting is a hobby inherent in the human race: it commences at school when a boy gathers birds eggs & butterflies. There are far more collectors of postage stamps & amateur gardeners in England than collectors of old furniture!' A letter of 28 June 1932 one page 12mo on Alderbourne Manor letterhead concerns a circular from Frederick Godfrey of 'The Renew Hair Institute of Hair Culture' received by Adams-Acton's cook two of Godfrey's printed circulars with an envelope addressed to 'Miss T. Mellor' are included. 'I see that the writer Mr. Godfrey uses the letters of the Society after his name. You will know whether he is entitled to do so and it would be interesting to find out who proposed him. In any case I feel this pilfering method of trading on the credulity of maids and persons of similar social standing together with the wording of his letter is peculiarly beastly. . I have also seen his advertisements in the daily Press. He is a fearful looking person with his hair standing up on the top of his skull like an overgrown goat!' Also included is a undated typed draft with manuscript corrections of a letter regarding Morley Horder and the removal of the 'fine Ionic screen' in which Adams-Acton is quoted as saying that 'only the upper portion of the facade had been re-designed by Mr. Beresford Pite and the whole of the screen that matters namely the piers columns and the three arches were entirely original and the work of Samuel Ware'. The 4-page prospectus handsomely printed on art paper carries four illustrations. It is accompanied by a compliment slip carrying a signed autograph note to Menzies reading 'I am hoping that with your influence I am going to sell quite a few hundred copies of my book!!' 5 October 1927 to 14 August 1933; most on letterhead of Acton Surgey Ltd., 'London, Paris & Crews Hill'. unknown‎

‎[ The English garden; gardening; ecology ]:‎

‎The English garden. Manuscript plan of unnamed garden with bloom calendar table showing the blooming patterns of more than a hundred flowers.‎

‎Place not stated England . 1928. The table or bloom calendar is in a makeshift table ruled out in pencil over 2pp. folio. It is in poor condition heavily-aged divided into two sections along central horizontal fold line and with slight loss to text from chipping. Headed '1928' the table has columns for each month from January to December with the time during which the various flowers are in bloom blocked out for a list of around 115 flowers in chronological order with the earliest blooming first from snowdrops crocuses pansies forget me nots tulips to asters sunflowers phloxes gaillardia Barr's pink japonica grey lady heather shades little boy blue little pink lady. The plan of the unnamed garden is 1p. folio in smilar aged condition to the table with chipping and a long closed tear along the central horizontal fold. Apparently incomplete it is a simple drawing of the layout in pencil with dots in ink presumably indicating places of planting. The names of a few plants are written in pencil: 'cerastium <abyssium> aubrictia arabis'. Beneath the plan in ink: '72 plants on inside edging. 6" apart 60 plants on second edging 8" apart 50 plants on third edging 8" apart 16 plants on outside border 2" apart'. Perhaps a comparison with the current blooming pattern would be constructive global warming. Place not stated [ England ]. 1928. unknown‎
