28 August no year. On letterhead of Elderfield Otterbourne Winchester. 4pp 16mo. Bifolium of grey paper with letterhead printed in red. In good condition lightly aged. Folded three times. The recipient is undoubtedly Elizabeth Missing Sewell or a member of her family and the letter begins: 'My dear Miss Sewell I wish you could have accomplished giving us a day hoping you might have found me in more lively and sensible trim than when you were here when I had a headache just enough to make me stupid.' She is going to post her Roscoe's 'William I' which she got 'from the Lending Library'. She has not yet read the book 'but a glance made me think we might get a good extract'. She will send it before 6 September 'when we go to my uncle's in Devon a place that always brightens me beyond all others'. She will write again before departing and returns in October. Changing the subject she writes: 'I was much provoked with the Saturday Review it was such a specimen of people reading and misunderstanding things never meant for them. I am vexed not to have had the book yet Hookham's Library never send above half the books one asks for - and they say it is because people will read nothing but novels'. 28 August [no year]. P. G. Wodehouse humorist. Two typewritten drafts each with autograph emendations of 'The Day I met the Master' Barrie Pitt's account of his encounter with Wodehouse in Tost internment camp. With printed version the article and other material
1992 and 1993. All items in good condition with minor signs of age. The drafts are both printed on yellow paper. Each is 4pp. 4to. The two appear the same textually but one has two slips of paper with amended text attached and the autograph emendations to the two are different from one another. Also present is a leaf from 'Lifewise' magazine November 1993 with one page carrying Pitt's memoir accompanied by a photograph of Wodehouse being interviewed at Tost by Angus Thuermer. The piece begins: 'I first saw P. G. Wodehouse from behind the barred window of a prison cell in Upper Silesia and was not at that moment particularly interested in who he might be.' The interment camp is 'Ilag VIII b Tost' and Pitt recalls his conversations with Wodehouse 'Oh Lord. Time to feed. Wonder what colour gravy they've boiled the old socks in today' and Wodehouse's advice regarding a short stoy by Pitt and its possible publication 'I wrote Latin hexameters at Dulwich: very useful when it comes to writing lyrics. Cole Porter and I always tried 'em out in Latin first. Showed up the flat spots immediately!'. Pitt is also alowed to 'look through the first chapters of Money in the Bank' which he discusses with Wodehouse. Towards the end he writes: 'I have no idea of the date but the time came when I watched him being escorted down the staircase by a somewhat sinister character and by Sonderfuhrer Heide and two German guards and the next thing I knew was that he had been released and was living in Berlin.' Together with the drafts and magazine version of the article there are also typewritten copies of two letters from Pitt. The first to Bernard Kaukas of the Savage Club 2 April 1992 enquires whether Wodehouse was a member of the Club. The second to Diana Shine of the Society of Authors 21 March 1992 offers the article for publication in the Society's magazine 'The Author'. The collection also includes a TLS to Pitt from Derek Parker editor of 'The Author' 27 March 1992 explaining the reasons for declining the piece. Both from 'Casa Mickie the second spelled 'Casa Micki' Gardone Riviera Lago di Garda Italy. 16 July 1953 and 5 August 1953. Two chatty and characteristic letters. ONE: 15 July 1953. 2pp. 4to. On aged paper with wear to edges and vertical closed tear at foot. She begins by praising his books 'Ladies First' 1952 and 'Shirtfronts and Sables' 1953 adding in an autograph note 'Yes I bought them when in London.' The first contains 'that wonderfully beautiful tribute to Ellen Terry. I don't know when I have read anything which moved me so deeply you rose to great heights when you wrote that. You are beginning to run James Agate very close on my shelves'. She next turns to her books on Henry Irving and Ellen Terry: 'Did you read the Shaw-Terrty letters - autograph note: 'Of course you did!' they sent my blood pressure mounting sky high - his at least. What a stupid wind bag of a man and how charming her letters were to him. It was the same with Mrs Patrick Campbell's letter to him and from him.' The rest of the letter contains references to 'dear Seymour Hicks' 'adorable Ella' and a trip on her birthday 'to Asolo where Duse lived': 'Oh what a sad town and the saddest of all the room in the little museum filled with her belongings - some photographs one signed one of Ibsen looking furious with the world in general some books a few bits of rather paltry jewellry and some dresses and shoes. There was the inevitable intense letter written by that cad d'Annunczio sic in his sprawling self satisfied writing'. She ends with an apology for 'this over long and - no doubt - badly spelt - letter' and with remembrances to 'Mrs "Mac.Pope"'. TWO: 5 August 1953. 1p. 4to. On aged paper creased and with fraying along one edge. She is using the abbreviation to him that she also sends 'to Yvonne Arnaud and Julia Neilson': '"T.R.N.A." - in other words this requires no answer'. She thanks him for information on 'the mirror act' which she saw 'years and years ago at the Middlesbrough Empire and the name on the bill was "The Wylie Brothers"'. She is pleased that 'Teddy Knox' remembers her: 'The last time I saw him was in Rome when I think he was bored stiff with St. Peters but full of admiration for the "Wedding Cake"'. She prefers Knox's wife Clarice Mayne to him and discusses the film that was to be made about her life. I was born within sight of the Crystal Palace and can even remember the great fire on one Sunday afternoon when part of the 'Tropical End' was burned to the ground. Those Courts with the fine casts of statues of all periods taught me how to look at their originals in many places. I wonder what has become of the two of the Venus de Milo; one with a hidden wedge of wood on her back and the other without that wedge which was only discovered when she was take to pieces & sent into the country for safety before the siege of Paris in 1869-70 It is not realised by the people who crowd orchestral concerts in these days that in the 'seventies there were very few - just the Philharmonic & the Crystal Palace until Richler Presumably Johann Baptist Isidor Richter came to London. At the Crystal Palace we heard many novelties and became familiar with much which is now old-fashioned. Sarasati played Tchaichovsky's sic Violin Concerto there during the life of the composer and we heard scraps of 'Parsifal'. How that choice murdered the Grail Music! Yours sincerely A.E.F. Horniman". A sensitive letter of condolence beginning: 'Dear Willy I was so shocked to hear on Thursday of the great loss you have sustained and I hesitated to write to you for letters of condolence are such empty useless things. But on the other hand I dont want you to suppose that I feel indifferent to anything that touches you so closely & deeply. We have been such sympathetic friends for so long that tho I did not know your father he too seemed almost like an old friend.' The letter concludes with a rumination on mortality Dredge finding sympathy 'not wholly useless but … a poor thing in the presence of death'. Note: This letter derives from a collection of letters of condolence to the Forbes family on the death of William Forbes father of Stanhope Forbes founder of the Newlyn School of Art whose brother was "William". On letterhead of 18 York Terrace Regent's Park London. 3 January 1899. 1p. 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition with light signs of age. He is enclosing a cheque for two guineas towards 'The Frederic Fund' and writes that he had 'the pleasure of often meeting Mr Harold Frederic at the Savage Club some years ago'. He was 'deeply grieved to hear of his sad & untimely end'. He hopes enough money will be collected to be an 'appreciable help to his widow & children'. The letter relates to a celebrated Victorian scandal. In 1884 Frederic had come to England with his wife and five children as the London correspondent of the New York TImes. He set up a second household with Kate Lyon with whom he had a further three children. Lyons was a Christian Scientist and when Frederic suffered a stroke in 1898 she tried to cure him by faith healing. At the instigation of Mrs Frederic Lyon was tried for manslaughter but was acquitted. Although the recipient is not named the letter is from a batch addressed to W. J. Fisher. The letter begins: 'Nothing can yield Persons in our Stations greater Satisfaction than to be entertain'd in our silent Retirement with some harmless amusements from a facetious & learned Correspondent. for without these while we were endeavouring with ye uttmost Diligence to know ye World as some People please to call it we shouldn't att last know whether wee were in it or not; But like ye People that never go beyond ye Smoak of ye Town Chimneys stare att every thing wee see & imagine ye Rest of Mankinde to be a new Creation.' He explains that he has resolved to 'preserve a Correspondence with those I knew before' and to 'form a new one with those whose extensive Character only made 'em known to me'. He hopes to pay Ellis 'in Current Coin; which I hope you will comply with & speedily lay your demands on' Murdin. Between 1740 and 1759 Murdin published his valuable 'Collection of State Papers relating to affairs in the reign of Elizabeth from 1571 to 1596: transcribed from original papers and other authentic memorials left by W. Cecill Lord Burghley and reposited in the library at Hatfield House.' Johnson stated in Boswell's Life that the 'most literary conversation' he ever enjoyed was at the table of 'Jack Ellis a money scrivener behind the Royal Exchange' at whose house he at one point dined twice a week. The main topic of the letter is Marshall's work preparing his book 'Prepare to shed them now. The Ballads of George R. Sims' London: Hutchinson 1968. A long and characteristic letter. After references to their meeting at the British Museum and to 'that excellent bookseller Mr Wallace of The Guild Hall Bookshop' 'he showed me a selection of the Dagonet Ballads – nothing like as good as the copy you saw' he turns to a 'Sims letter' which Spilstead sent him: 'I cant at the moment date it. He was living in Clarence Terrace Regents Park when he died in 1922. … He was a cagey chap personally. Acknowledged marrying Florence Wykes in 1901 but in 1886 dedicated a book to his gentle wife Bessie.' He continues: 'I think that I have all I want of G. R. S's books from the London Library. My Hutchinson book will be hung on the Dagonet Ballads. I am chiefly interested in visual material. I've located a film of Christmas Day in the Workhouse. But I think there must have been Temperance Lantern Slides of other poems. I'd like to find also engravings etc of Slum Conditions Prostitution East End music halls etc around the 1880's 1890's.' He explains that his life is 'a bit chaotic' with a cousin 'going quitely sic mad in Edinburgh while her octogenerian sic mother wont die'. He has got to go to Scotland 'to see what can unobtrusively be done. Also until I can disentangle what Sims's copyright position is I cant be sure despite Hutchinsons wish to do the book whether they can get the clearances.' Spilstead's invitation to dine at Rule's is 'delightful'; it is one of his favourite restaurants 'Ruled usually Out now that one can't charge what for a free lance sic are legitimate expenses'. He concludes: 'Lunches with daughters are special. ONE: 28 April 1948; from the Marine Hotel Hastings Barbados British West Indies. TWO: 15 October 1951; on letterhead of 11 Reddington Road Hampstead NW3 London. From the Macqueen-Pope papers. See his entry and that of Matheson Lang in the Oxford DNB. As the latter states Britton and Lang had married in 1903 she had been an actress with him in the Benson company since 1901. They toured together in Lang’s company with Britton usually as his leading lady. ‘In 1914 they helped to inaugurate Shakespeare productions at the Old Vic under Lilian Baylis for which Lang personally lent costumes and scenery.’ Britton was for many years a member of the Old Vic's governing board. Both items are signed ‘N. Matheson Lang’. ONE: ALS 28 April 1948. Air Mail letter on blue paper with Marine Hotel letterhead. In fair condition a little creased and aged but with the postage stamp torn away resulting in the loss of a few words of text. She begins by thanking him for his ‘charming little letter of sympathy’. Lang had died at Bridgetown 11 April 1948. She was greatly touched by his ‘kind remembrance’ of her husband. She is hoping ‘Joan’ has kept the ‘home papers’ for her. She describes her plans for her return in June or July: ‘I am going to the rooms we had reserved at The Hendon Hall Hotel anyway to start with till I can find myself as it was. He begins: 'Having some communication last week with Mr. Charles Heath in the course of conversation he was regretting that he could not procure any proofs of plates engaraved by Mr. Raimbach - now as your Kindness gained me what I wished of his performance with an obliging offer of something more it occurred to me to solicit fom Mr. Heath a print you wanted & I ventur'd to promise him in exchange one of Mr. Raimbachs'. He is enclosing a note not present 'by which you will perceive the terms on which Mr. Heath wishes to treat'. He is sending Balmanno Heath's print 'but whether you can in return for some invaluables which it is in his power to procure give him the extent of his wishes I know not'. Newland was an English daguerreotypist and magic lanternist who travelled from New Orleans through Central and South America to the Pacific New Zealand Australia England and finally to Calcutta between 1845 and 1857. 2pp. 12mo. In good condition lightly aged. He has submitted the recipient's letter to the Queen 'together with the Daguerrotypes that accompanied it'. He explains that while the queen 'perfectly appreciated your attention in wishing to present these Daguerrotypes to Her Majesty' there can be 'no departurte' from a 'rule laid down … that Her Majesty cannot accept any Articles offered to Her' as it would create 'a very insidious distinction'. She was one of my audience when I lectured at the R.A.D.A. but I didnt know it. But it took away her reserve and made her natural.’ He apologises for his bad typing and states that he is ‘nearly dead as a result of the Drury Lane production. but that was worth it’. Regarding the article he concludes that it is ‘a bit long I fear - there is so much to say’. THREE: Carbon of Typed Article titled ‘Dorothy Tutin - Star in Spite of Herself. / by / W. Macqueen-Pope’. 6pp 4to. Begins: ‘On the stage at Wyndhams Theatre London is a play called “The Living Room†a young girl is staring at Death. . And what makes it all the more remarkale is that the actress who plays it Dorothy Tutin aged twenty two - is not a bit like that. She is a little creature of immense vitality whose wide eyes and parted lips do indeed gaze before her - not at Death but at Life which stretches in such a long long vista before her. She is twenty two she has been on the stage about five years - and she is playing a difficult exacting role - a leading role amidst a brilliant company in a most notable play at one of London’s most successful theatres. And yet she did not want to be an actress at all.’ Concludes: ‘The writer of these words lectured for a long while to the students of the R.A.D.A. He used to look at the young people in front of him and wonder how many of them would make the grade. His half century of hard experience taught him that the percentage would be very few. . Dorothy Tutin sat there listening to words about her calling - and in Dorothy Tutin our stage has an Actress - with a capital A - who does not look nor behave like an actress at all. She had actually played Macbeth himself when at school . she remembers the chapel organ peeling out as she was dying / She didnt feel strange at all in the part despite the fact that the girl who played Lady Macbeth was much bigger than she. . Wants to play Shakespeare - afraid of her voice. . Does not look or behave the least bit like an actress. . Beneath this list at the foot of the second page is a list in what is probably Wilkins’ hand of four individual contributions totaling £3 1s 6d from the ‘Exeter Branch E. C. U. &c &c’. R. J. Burn Rodney Joseph Burn English painter. Three Autograph Letters Signed and one unsigned to ‘Mr Lawrence’ regarding his work his studio and ‘Mr Daniel’ Sir Augustus Moore Daniel the new Director of the National Gallery.
One dated 10 September 1928 the others without year but around the same time. All from 2 Hill Way Highgate N.6. London. One also with ‘Studio address / 7 Park Hill studios / Park Hill road / Hampstead’. After serving in the Great War Burn son of Sir Joseph Burn studied at the Slade between 1918 and 1922 winning six prizes. After teaching in London at the Royal College and in Boston he offered his services to the war effort. After the war he went back to the Royal College as a senior tutor. The four ot the items here are in fair condition lightly worn and discoloured. Each is folded once for postage. Although only one is dated the others appear to date from around the same time. ONE ‘Monday’: 1p 4to. Unsigned. Arranging for Lawrence to visit his studio: ‘We will show you what we have got in the way of oil sketches but I rather doubt if there is any thing very suitable however come and see.’ TWO 21 July 1928: 2pp 12mo. He has written to ‘Guthrie’ to say that Lawrence is going to visit. ‘I will keep the sketch that I am working on for you at £10. I am sure it will be a masterpiece.’ In a postscript he announces that he is ‘going away to morrow with my Father for a week and I will tell him about your nephue sic then.’ THREE 10 September 1928: 2pp 4to. He has finished working from Lawrence’s sketch and will be sending the painting. ‘You said at the N.E.A.C. when I saw you last that you would be interested to see the larger picture of the same subject’. He renews his invitation to the sudio as it would be safer for Lawrence to ‘take the sketch away’. He has ‘got quite a number of new things’ to show Lawrence and is ‘now the proud possessor of a morris Car’. Regarding the future Sir Augustus Moore Daniel 1866-1950 he writes: ‘What good news about Mr Daniel being made director of the National Gallery We must all prepare lists of pictures to be taken from the walls & lists of pictures to take their places. I wrote to him with the suggestion but he replied that he had no intention of being a new broom.’ FOUR 5 February 1929: 2pp 12mo. He begins by thanking him for the cheque for ten pounds. He did not go ‘to the sale of Marchants pictures’: ‘fortunately he had not got any of mine as I expect they would have gone for a penny or so’. He ends with news of his wife’s health. Leighton’s entry in the Oxford DNB explains that ‘In 1954 she began a long run nearly four years in London and New York as Anne Shankland and Sybil Railton-Bell in the double bill of Terence Rattigan's Separate Tables co-starring with Eric Portman and winning a Tony award as best actress.’ 2pp 4to. Addressed to ‘Dear Mr Sephton’ with good bold signature ‘Margaret Leighton.’ In good condition lightly aged folded for postage. She thanks him for the letter informing her that he ‘had enjoyed Separate Tables and the Teckman mystery!’ She hopes that he will ‘enjoy “The Constant Husband†& “Carrington V.C†as much’. ‘I want to shew you how very insecure is your foothold’: Rev. Outram Marshall Secretary of the English Church Union. Autograph Letter Signed regarding a letter in the Guardian the Synod of Arles and the teaching of the Church regarding divorce.
7 February 1896. London: 242 Portsdown Road W. 4pp 12mo. Bifolium. Aged worn and with spots of discoloration. 106 lines in a truly execrable hand. The following reading is tentative. The recipient is not named and the letter is signed ‘T. Outram Marshall’. The letter begins: ‘My dear Sir / I also read the letters in the Guardian very carefully’. There follow references to ‘the argument of a pamphlet as to the Teaching of Holy Scripture’. The third paragraph begins: ‘But to my mind the words of the Council of Arles are evidence that in 314 the Bps. there assembled believed just what our Petitioner says.’ He quotes a Latin test and discusses it. There are three long numbered objections. and three assertions are given of which ‘We are convinced’. He discusses what is the case ‘If “the High Ch. Party†is not content with the Scripture & the existing Laws of the English & whole western Ch’. He is glad that the recipient does not agree on one point ‘with the Bp. of London’ ‘But if you do not - what remains - you say the husband of this unfaithful wife - has permission to marry again - then it follows that he has permission to dissolve the bond which till he desides to do so - has not been broken. This is a wholly new theory which as yet no Bp. East or West has fulfilled. / Forgive my writing this - I want to shew you how very insecure is your foothold’. 7 February 1896. 8 December 1988. No place. Watford’s obituaries noted her sensitive acting style and ranked alongside Peggy Ashcroft. On both sides of a 14.5 x 10 cm card with no printing but for the name ‘GWEN WATFORD’ in red at the head of recto. Addressed to ‘Dear Mr Sephton’ and with good firm signature ‘Gwen Watford’. In good condition lightly aged. Twelves lines of neatly written text. She has ‘just finished another mid-week matinee’ and is writing thank him for his ‘most encouraging letter’ which she will ‘treasure’. ‘The critics are never kind to Jeffrey Archer but his actors are enormously grateful for the parts he has written & the chances he gives us to use our skills’. On unillustrated post card with printed letterhead. In fair condition a trifle worn and discoloured with one inky thumbprint not over text and a kink to one corner. Addressed by Fisher to ‘Miss Mayra sic Lynd / 5 Keats Grove / Hampstead / NW.’ Signed by Fisher with initials ‘H F’. Reads: ‘What charming verses! You might as easily have replied otherwise eg / Hola! un gant! / Bonnet rouges en avant! / A la Bourgeoisie / choisie / Aux capitalistes / Farceurs fumistes / un gant de / etc etc / H F’. The recipient writes the following lengthwise on the address side: ‘H. A. L. The letter concerns the 1969-70 Palace Theatre production of ‘Phil the Fluter’ in which she played Mrs Fitzmaurice. Addressed to ‘Dear Kenneth’ and with good firm signature ‘Evelyn Laye’. In good condition lightly aged. Folded once for postage. She thanks him for the letter and ‘the lovely Shamrock’ which she has planted ‘in a little pot as it was so very thoughtful of you to sentd it to me for Good Luck’.
