Leipsick: Gerhard Fleischer 1826. Early Leipsick printing 3 volumes in original patterned paper covers respectively 285 294 and 307pp. Vol I with "Vol III" crossed-out on pre-title and title page. Includes Cath-loda Fingal Temora and a Critical Dissertation. Pages untrimmed and a little browned. Spines cracked but intact with handwritten title labels. Conventional wisdom today brands Ossian as one of the great forgeries of history written down by MacPherson from oral traditions collected by him in Scotland. The themes characters and passages of Ossian are however based on established Celtic and Scottish folklore and the work has literary merits and historical importance.
