An unpublished jeux d'esprit on the well-known poem by Isaac Watts also parodied by Lewis Carroll the poem consists of twenty-four lines arranged in six four-line stanzas followed by: 'written in the shortest minute of the longest day by Thomas Haynes Bayly June 22nd. 1835.' The first two stanzas read: 'As "doth the little busy Bee "Improve each shining hour "And gather honey all the day "From every opening flower." So doth the busy T. H. B. From bud to blossom hop In search of sweets incessantly And seldom finds a drop!' Of the woman or girl to whom he is addressing the poem he writes in the fourth stanza: 'And oh most happy T. H. B. He reminds Macqueen-Pope that two years previously he was 'kind enough to receive me at your Office and after a long and most interesting chat on things theatrical over an hour as I recall! you wrote into my copies of your "Drury Lane" and "Carriages at Eleven" two very greatly appreciated inscriptions by way of friendship'. He now has his 'delightful "Gaiety" and splendid 'Haymarket" and asks for 'another pow-wow' at 359 Strand. The recipient's 'Gaiety' has sent him 'rummaging through my old programmes to stick inside the covers - and to my horror I discovered that my acquaintance with theh Old Gaiety commenced 50 years ago next July with Teddy Payne & dear old Connie Ediss bless her memory in "The Messenger Boy". Ye gods! I feel almost a centenarian thanks to that programme!!' He also discusses the 'Haymarket' book Samuel Foote and his own activities: 'I have an immense collection of Historic Singers' Records from which I sometimes broadcast over the air - & I write Articles on these great Artists for sundry little magazines here & in America on occasion.' ‎J. G. Wilson proprietor of London booksellers J. & E. Bumpus Ltd. Autograph notebook containing draft of talk to trainee booksellers on 'Modern Fine & First Editions' proposals for 'Anecdotal History of Bookselling' and for trade 'social club'.‎

‎Without date or place. J. & E. Bumpus Ltd. 477 Oxford Street. It is Sir Basil Blackwell in his DNB entry on Wilson who described him as 'the most famous English sic bookseller of his time'. The freshness and enthusiasm conveyed by this small volume supports Blackwell's view that Wilson viewed 'bookselling not so much as a matter of retail trade as a service in which bookseller and customer met and shared the experience of contact with the precious manifestations of the spirit of man' as well as casting light on the methods and practices which made Wilson so successful. 23pp. 12mo with a further nine pages of pencil notes on early printing and two small leaves of memoranda loosely inserted. In Wilson's neat hand with occasional corrections. Ryman 'Strand Reporters Book'. In fair condition on lightly aged and worn paper. The notebook's first item is the draft of the talk titled 'Modern Fine & First Editions' on three numbered pages. It begins: 'The first year's course presented several talks relating to Stock and how it should be displayed & kept. In the main we considered the regular level stock & what are usually called bread & butter lines. We didn't touch with much detail on remainders as a regular departmental matter although as we all know many of the remainder items are most attractive books & when stocks are small the selling is quick & easy. It is perhaps a topic that deserves an evening to itself.' This section is followed by another three pages of untitled notes on the nature of bookselling which is described as 'more than mere handling of books as commodities selling what is asked for going with the stream. It is having a knowledge & control of the material passing it on with a touch of personal flavour. Swank you say. Yes indeed I agree. But not altogether swank because the exercise of control the keeping of a feeling of detachment is the proper attitude of all good salesmanship.' This section contains a praise for the 'zest & enthusiasm' of the 'old-fashioned bookseller': 'He was not ashamed to voice his love for authors & books. He was no trimmer. Is not a part of the new style a joy in belittling what has been the popular & accepted literary forms Isn't this another kind of swank' After a few pages of miscellaneous notes comes a proposal for a book on the 'story of bookselling in the City of London' 'a most deserving study which might be attempted as a thesis arranged by the Stationers' Company or by a combined effort on the part of the Publishers' Assocn. & the Associated Booksellers.' Another page headed 'Anecdotal History of Bookselling' proposes 'a social club which could meet once a month or say six times a year. At the meetings those who know the history of the booktrade in some of its aspects would be asked to speak & members would add their memories or views.' Two pages one detached concern 'Stocktaking' beginning: 'Art of valuing our possessions: To know what we are worth in relation to sale prices. To look at everything frankly and rearrange sales. This presupposes a knowledge of what we paid for the goods = Cost a. Purchases during financial year. b. Books taken in last stock sheets. c. Detail all valuable books.' Another note discusses the 'reconditioning of bookshops in line with modern shopfitting' with reference to <> exteriors given to WHSmith establishments'. The memoranda on the two small leaves contain some interesting thoughts for example: 'Typography is not enough. The real maker is the author. Would your designer refuse to clothe with beautiful design inferior writing. Overalls - & a little more music!' and 'Steep yourself in words well spoken Surround yourself with beautiful phrases Dont be ashamed to be found reading a classic'. Wilson's view of the bookseller's high calling is also conveyed in another note: 'Impossible to maintain freshness of reception all the time. Gradually we become set. Is there any cure for this shutting down The only preservative is a habit of holding our own opinions very personally while keeping an open mind to new ideas; and to avoid infatuation by maintaining a lively detachment in our work.' ‎Cholera; Charles Greville celebrated diarist and first-class cricketer. Autograph Signature 'C Greville' to part of letter.‎

‎No place. 28 November 1831. The Greville Memoirs caused an uproar on its publication in 1874. Queen Victoria described it as a 'dreadful and really scandalous book' which should be 'severely censored and discredited'. Disraeli characterised its author as 'the vainest being—I don't limit myself to man—that ever existed; and I don't forget Cicero and Lytton Bulwer … when he was not scandalous he was prolix and prosy—a clumsy wordy writer … a more verbose indefinite unwieldy affair without a happy expression never issued from the pen of a fagged subordinate of the daily press'. On both sides of a piece of paper cut from a letter. In good condition lightly aged. The verso reads: 'Sir Your Most Obedt Servant C Greville 28 Nov. 1831 A Report to be transmitted accordingly on Monday in every Week. -' The recto reads: '… requesting by desire of Viscoun<t> Palmerston that a Weekly Repo<rt> may be made out and transmi<tted> to that Department relative to the state of health in London with reference to Cholera Morb<us> I am to desire that you will …'. Note: "The first incidence of cholera in England occurred in Sunderland in October 1831 when a ship carrying sailors who had the disease docked at the port. The ship was allowed to dock because the port authorities objected to and therefore ignored instructions from the government to quarantine all ships coming from the Baltic states. From Sunderland the disease made its way northwards into Scotland and southwards toward London. Before it had run its course the disease had claimed some 52000 lives." ‎The first letter addressed from Holywood Belfast; the other two in envelopes with Belfast postmarks. Three letters dated 25 July 1861 and 13 and 23 January 1862. The other letter undated. Totalling 16pp. 12mo. In very good condition on lightly-aged paper. With two envelopes both initaled 'G. L. C.' with Penny Red postage stamps and Belfast postmarks 13 and 25 January 1862 both addressed by Craik to 'John Hunter Esq: Craigcrook by Edinburgh' also a similar envelope with Belfast postmark dated 27 August 1861 addressed to Hunter at 'Robertson's Lodgings 24 St. Stephen's Green North Dublin'. Chatty friendly letters in a crabbed difficult hand. On 13 January 1862 Craik writes: 'I am very glad you have spoken to Dr. John Brown. I have rather a curious story to tell you about the getting up of the last edition of the Encyc. Brit. if there were time. I am so delighted thhat you agree with me about <> Price's article. I find it <> most people - but it will work its way.' The letter of 23 January 1862 begins: 'My dear Hunter Here is Dodd's most characteristic and interesting letter which I ought perhaps to have returned before. I hope the copy of my book has reached the N. B. North British Review by this time. To my surprise upon receiving a list of the copies sent out I found none for any of the quarterly Reviews. I have recommended strongly that copies should be sent at least to the Edinburgh the Quarterly and the Westminster.' The letter of 25 July 1861 largely concerns 'the Cardross Case'. One letter 'Friday p.m.' makes suggestions for a planned trip to Dublin by Hunter. Hunter was the son of Professor James Hunter 1745-1837 and nephew by marriage of the editor of the Edinburgh Review Francis Jeffrey 1773-1850. ‎Beauchamp Tower inventor describes his 'yachting cruises during the past season' in the Gwynfa to Sir Richard Harington. Nineteen-page Autograph Letter Signed to 'Dick' comprising extracts from his diary including a pair of hand-drawn diagrams.‎

‎Warley Mount Brentwood 30 October 1901. 19pp foolscap 8vo. On five bifoliums. Neatly and closely written. In good condition lightly aged and worn. Tower's letter begins: 'My dear Dick I enclose a chart not present which will show you at a glance my yachting cruises during the past season'. The rest of letter consists of extracts from Tower's diary 4 April to 12 September 1901 describing with the care one would expect from an engineer 'one of the best long vacation cruises on record' and ending with a table of 'Distances sailed by me in Gwnfa' from Brightlingsea to Harwich Antwerp 'Abortive attempt from Flushing' Flushing Dover Portsmouth Dieppe Maestrand Copenhagen Kiel Brunsbutell Hamburg Cuxhaven Lowestoft' totalling 2135 miles. Tower adds this to the total steamed in another ship 'Ingani' 'making a grand total for the seaon of 1901 of 3508 miles'. In businesslike fashion Tower notes times position weather and significant incidents. A representative entry reads: 'Tues 13th. Very fine weather Lat 54.40 N Long 6.22 E by obs. At noon Wind dropped at 4.pm. We were amongst a fleet of German steam trawlers. Sent a boat to one of them and got a bucket full of fine Plaice becalmed all night'. See Tower's obituary in Minutes of the Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers vol.162 1905 pt 4 which describes his connection with the sea his 'principal work' being 'the gyroscopic “steady platform†for guns and searchlights … The device was submitted to the Admiralty and after being thoroughly tested was fitted to two gunboats on which it answered very well; but ultimately the Admiralty rejected the apparatus on account of the extra weight involved … Mr. Tower nevertheless proceeded to adapt the platform for passenger-seats on cross-channel steamers'. The recipient Sir Richard Harington 12th Baronet 1861-1931 would not succeed to the baronetcy until the death of his father in 1911. Himself a keen yachtsman he was a Puisne Judge in the High Court of Justice at Fort William in Bengal between 1899 and 1913. From the Harington family papers. ‎Sheridan Morley author and broadcaster. Two Autograph Letters Signed two Typed Letters Signed and one telegram to theatrical bookseller Barry Duncan with carbon copy of one of his letters.‎

‎Two of the letters on letterhead of 5 Peckarmans Wood London SE26 and the other two on cancelled BBC letterheads from the same address. All six items from 1970. The six items in fair condition with light signs of age and wear. The four letters all with Morley's expansive signature 'Sheridan Morley'. The first letter 9 March 1970 begins: 'It seems a long time indeed it is since I used to buy books from your shop in St Martin's Court; but I thought I'd try to re-establish contact with you because I have started - in a very small way - to sell theatre and film books myself in the basement of James and Pauline Scudamore's secondhand bookshop in the Earl's Court Road.' In a long letter 2pp. 8vo on 16 May he writes that he would be 'delighted to take over as much of your remaining stock as I can afford and you want to dispose of' but 'with a son of 2 and another baby imminent' he can 'only afford to make the bookselling a part-time career; most of my work is done as an interviewer for BBC television and the arrangement I have with the Scudamores is an ideal one for me in that I have one room of their shop to call my own but when I am not there ie about 3 days of the week they "caretake" it for me and people buying books pay for them at their desk upstairs'. He continues with an explanation of the arrangements. Morley ends the letter with a promise to 'pass on yours to Pauline James and my godfather Sewell'. In the third letter 15 May he explains that he has been 'out of London filming for the BBC' but that he would be interested in the items Duncan offers but will have difficulty raising the £80 cost 'not that I question your valuation merely that we are under-capitalised'. He offers to visit Duncan in Southampton to discuss the matter further. The telegram 28 May attempts to change the date of the visit. The last letter 1 June regards payment through a money order. The carbon copy of Duncan's letter 2pp. 4to is dated 14 March 1970 is signed and discusses Morley's proposal in detail. He apologises for not answering her letter sooner but he has been 'buried in a film studio for the past four months'. She will know that the film he is working on is 'Green for Danger'. The film has a planned autumn release. He is glad she liked the film of Shakespeare's 'Henry V': 'It is not surprising that you haven't seen me before as it was my first picture since the beginning of the war as the Army took up most of my time.' He would prefer 'a stage appearance' to 'film making' but there is 'little hope' as he is 'tied up with pictures until sometime early next year except that I hope to do the sequel to the “Men of Property†when it is done on the air in November'. He is not sure he understands her 'distinction between strong parts and the hero type of role' but he has always 'played what I imagine you mean by strong stuff'. He discusses Charles's dress in the picture in some detail adding that 'The portrait 27 x 28 1/2 inches has been in my possession since 1918 when it was bought at Christie's Nov. 29 lot. 112 by order of the Executors of the late Judge Evans catalogued as "Dobson Charles II in Oxford robes holding a book." He reproduces inscriptions present on the back of the frame and concludes: 'I should so very much like to know what these robes represent. Blanchard and his wife 'very seldom go out of a Sunday but should the weather be at all favourable' they will 'make a vigorous effort to avail ourselves of the strong temptation you have so kindly thrown in our way'. They will be 'quite content with an afternoon ramble in your beautiful garden and a chat with dear Mrs. Keeley'. Addressed on the reverse of the second leaf to 'T: P: Cooke Esqre Royal Coburg Theatre' with two postmarks. The two men do not appear to have been related. TSC requests TPC's 'friendly interference to endeavour at getting from Mr. Chilvers music copyist to the Coburg Theatre a Symphony which he got from me two months since under a promise to let me have it copied in six days.' TSC states 'I have been seriously injured and am unlikely to be more so in my profession for want of it as it is a work of much labour and I have been compelled to repeatedly disappoint those to whom its perusal was to be submitted for their approval of my qualifications for a situation of considerable import to me-'. He has 'time after time allowed sufficient scope to avoid interference' with Chilvers' 'duty to the Theatre But in fact he trifles with me beyond all endurance and what is worse has made me appear to do so with others who have it in their power much to serve me.' He continues to complain of Chilvers' 'shameful neglect' and requests from TPC 'all the convenient dispatch in this affair in your power'. ‎Will Till South African photographer. Long Autograph Letter Signed to English royal photographer Marcus Adams discussing his work methods and circumstances.‎

‎On letterhead of Will Till Hon. F.R.P.S. "Bryro" 3 Grays Terrace Kensington Johannesburg South Africa. 2 July 1956. 4pp. 4to. In good condition lightly-aged and worn. Long closely-written letter friendly and informative. Topics include the breaking of his right arm the weather in Johannesburg 'I do not take my landscapes in winter - but our Transvaal summer is my time to operate with the camera to record the trees - the clouds & all the mood that goes with it' Adams's support for 'the London Salon panel of prints'. Regarding their ages he writes: 'Your fine record of eighty one wonderful years makes my own sixty two quite youngish and I hope & pray you will be long spared to continue to grace this good earth'. He plans to revisit England with his wife within three years and wishes to meet Adams and his son Gilbert in order to 'shape up to the future'. He gives news of his eldest son and expresses interest in a planned book on Adams's life 'for you have inspired hundreds to do good work'. Till has posted six prints - 'all landscapes' - for entry in the London Salon and asks Adams for his opinion. 'Some taken on our holiday travels - my wife paints and sketches we travel thousands of miles to get good shots. I've about 3000 good landscape shots & will go on making more - that urge to produce pictures goes on and on'. He discusses his own plans 'to publish a book of my landscapes - it is almost ready but I have not yet approached anyone about publishing it - in fact I really dont know just how to go about it - but one day I will get round to doing something'. He gives details of his employment explaining that it was in one of his firm's steelworks that he broke his arm: 'just tripped over a machine left by one of my Engineers put where it should not have been - and at an advanced middle age bones dont knit too quickly'. He writes that he is appending 'a shot of myself not present taken by Gordon <Waugh> FRPS - it was taken during the judging of the S H Salon some months ago'. It was the Johannesburg Photographic Society which described Till as the greatest South African pictorialist. For more information about him see his entry in the South African Who's Who. Adams's obituary in The Times 11 April 1959 titled ''Doyen of Child Photography' describes him as 'the outstanding child photographer of his day and photographer to the Royal Family for more than 30 years'. ‎5 October 1949. A. J. C. Ranch Thermal California. It is puzzling that Van Druten one of the most successful British playwrights of the early 1930s should not have an entry in the Oxford DNB. The present entertaining and informative letter is written from the A. J. C. Ranch in Coachella Valley which Van Druten purchased with his then-lover Carter Lodge and the British actress Auriol Lee it was named after the initals of their first names. Van Druten left his interest in the ranch to Lodge by then in a relationship with Dick Foote together with the rights to his work including his dramatic adaptation of his friend Christopher Isherwood's story 'I am a Camera'. See Isherwood's diaries and Peter Parker's biography of him. 2pp 8vo. Signed 'John van Druten'. A long letter closely typed. In fair condition on aged and creased paper with slight rust staining to corner of one leaf from paperclip. The letter begins: 'Dear Mr. Macqueen-Pope Your letter which came yesterday really cries for an answer to so many points.' He begins with a paragraph 'about the Kali Fizzing Towers' the song 'Old French Bonnet' and 'the bells of "Paree" not Calais'. The next paragraph concerns 'Dodie' i.e. Dodie Smith author of 'The Hundred and One Dalmations' and MP's book 'Twenty Shillings to the Pound'. He moves on to a discussion of the contents of 'the Agnes Platt book' which leads him to the critic and playwright J. T. Grein 1862-1935 who was a friend of Van Druten's father 'in his younger days: they came over from Holland more or less at the same time and shared lodgings somewhere in Shepherd's Bush. I never knew him in my childhood but his Sunday Times pieces were held up to me as models of dramatic criticism - and when I wrote my first one-act play at the age of 14 Father sent it to Grein who wrote back something nice about it.' He has for 'where it is situated' 'a fairly good theatre library' and describes some of its volumes enquiring whether one 'would be of any service to you in writing GHOSTS AND GREASEPAINT which I am very eager to read'. Another book which he offer to present to MP 'as a token of the very great pleasure your books have given me' is an American volume on Charles Frohman. The letter ends in personal reminiscence. He recalls that his 'own first theatre was ALICE IN WONDERLAND around 1906 with Marie Studholme - I think Seymour Hicks was the Mad Hatter - and Phyllis Bedells as the First Oyster. The first play I ever went to in the evening was THE BALKAN PRINCESS about which you write so much and so glowingly. And I think I remember almost everything I ever heard about the theatre from the age of four onwards.' After a reference to his 1935 autobiography he asks MP if he knows the words to the tearjerker 'Ring down the curtain I can't sing tonight' which is 'something my nurse used to sing to me'. In the penultimate paragraph he writes: 'A number of "lesser fry" from the old theatre turn up in America apart from the stars who have taken to Hollywood. Not long ago when casting a place there appeared Richard Temple who told me he was married to Evie Greene. And there are Margery Maude and Lydia Bilbrooke and Hazel formerly Kathleen Jones - and I am always able to give them their biographies when I meet them - sometimes to their slight embarrassment. Margery Maude told me when I informed her that I had seen her Titania with Tree in the production with the "real rabbits" - that the poor rabbits all died from licking the green paint of the hill-slopes. Did you know that' He feels that he 'could go on for ever' but must not 'exceed this page'. He concludes by declaring himself to be 'a very ardent awaiter of all the forthcoming books that you mention'. A postscript at the head of the first page reads: 'I do so agree with your description of London as lacking in "all standard and quality". Folded twice. Written in his usual difficult hand. He begins by stating that her note was forwarded to him from Knebworth. The letter continues: 'I had previously requested my Solicitor. to arrange some plan if possible by which the tenets of the Deed might be performed without your intervention or occasioning you any personal trouble &c.' The solicitor has informed Lytton that he has 'not quite effected that object in a mode which will you from all anxiety.' A reference to 'Mr. Greene' follows and he continues by explaining why he was 'desirous of this' with a possible and only partially-legible reference to his long-suffering wife as 'Lady L' and 'the mother'. He ends in the hope that she will visit him at Knebworth. Two attractive items suitable for display both in good condition on lightly-aged paper. LETTER: 1p. 12mo. Written in an expansive artistic hand at times difficult to decipher. In the first paragraph he appears to thank the recipient for a payment. He continues: 'I shall take the earliest Chance of coming over to Christchurch to see you if it still be agreeable. Warrington <> how often times mentioned your name unto me If I cannot fix any date as I have so many little odd things to see to all of which take time'. At head and in left-hand margin are five striking and attractive ilustrations of figures including Hermes and a man with a stick. PAGES OF DESIGNS: The two pages are 12mo on the recto of the first leaf and verso of the second and fold out to make an attractive 4to leaf for display. Both pages in landscape and the whole executed in black ink. The first page carries nine sketches of figures and the second eleven figures three heads and two leaves on a twig. ‎Malcolm Osborne painter. Two Autograph Letters Signed to Westley Manning in the first describing his wartime enlistment in the Artists Rifles and training under the artist William Lee-Hankey.‎

‎The first from 11 Edith Grove Chelsea. 24 July 1915. The second from 15 Redcliffe Square South Kensington. 25 July 1921. Both letters in very good condition neatly written out on lightly-aged paper. ONE: 2pp. 4to. He begins: 'I am just sending you a line to let you know that I have now taken the plunge & have enlisted in the "Artists Rifles." So far the change of life & exercise I am finding quite enjoyable and beneficial although everything seems such a contrast to previous habits of living no doubt I shall become accustomed to things as time passes.' He has 'worried Mr Oakley Williams with reference to Red Cross work' but was told that there was 'not much chance of my services being made use of in that direction so I abandoned the idea'. He has since 'applied at the R.A.M.C. but found they were up to full strength so I have now forsaken my intention of taking Ambulance work'. He knows several of the men in the Artists' Rifles 'quite well. in fact I find that one of the Officers is Mr Lee Hankey the Etcher. It seems very curious now having to stand & salute him after knowing so well in private life. He is our instructor for panoramic drawing & map drawing & makes it very interesting.' He ends in the hope that Manning has found 'a suitable place to spend the Summer'. TWO: 2pp. 12mo. On bifolium. He begins by acknowledging a cheque 'for the proof of "Admiralty Archway" sold in Japan' and thanks him for his efforts in what has 'certainly turned out to be quite a successful venture'. He sends his sympathies to Manning for being unable to leave London it being 'a very anxious time for Mrs Manning' and concludes with his own plans to 'spend a few days by the sea'.
